Many of us feel that we can’t think clearly or focus well after sitting for a long time. But why? And what can we do to solve this problem? Researchers from University College London have found the answer: exercise.
Their study mainly talks about how exercise influences our brain, especially for teenagers and older adults. They found that the good influence of exercise can last even into the next day. In the study, 76 people aged between 50 and 83 took part in different physical activities, such as fast walking, dancing, and climbing stairs. These activities made their hearts beat faster. The scientists found that after the activities, the participants felt sharper the next day. They not only had better focus, but also enjoyed better and more peaceful sleep.
The study also showed that too much sitting and too little exercise led to worse cognitive skills the next day. This means if you don’t move much, your brain might feel a bit cloudy and less active.
But why is exercise so good for our brains? When we exercise, our hearts beat faster, so more oxygen and nutrients reach our brains, helping them work better. Exercise also triggers the production of something special called neurotransmitters. They help us feel better and think more clearly.
The good news is that you don’t need to go to a gym to get these benefits. Simple daily activities, like riding a bike, playing sports with friends, or even dancing in your room, can help keep your mind sharp.
39.What did the study find about exercise?
A.Exercise only helps older adults think better.
B.The good influence of exercise can last for one day.

One evening, eleven-year-old Tom is fishing with his father by the lake. He ties on a small lure and throws the hook into the water. The lure makes beautiful ripples in the sunset.
Suddenly, his fishing pole doubles over heavily. Tom knows something big is on the other end. His eyes widen with excitement. After a few rounds of fighting with the fish, he finally gets the huge fish out of the water. It is the largest fish he has ever seen. Tom and his father look at the fish in surprise.
Then, Tom’s father checks his watch. It is 7 p.m. — two hours before the fishing season begins.
“You must put it back, son,” the father says calmly.
“Dad!” Tom cries loudly. His eyes are full of tears. “There will be other fish,” the father says.
“Not as big as this one,” the boy says sadly. He looks around the lake. There are no other fishermen or boats around. No one has seen them. And nobody will know what time they caught this big fish.
Tom looks again at his father’s face. He knows that nothing can change his father’s decision. Unwillingly, he puts the huge fish back into the water.
That was 34 years ago. Today, Tom is a successful businessman. He has never again caught such a big fish as the one that night. However, he does see that same fish again and again — every time he comes up against a moral question.
As his father taught him, ethics is simple: it’s about right and wrong. But doing the right thing is not easy, especially when no one is watching.

A.Two hours before the fishing season began.
B.On the first day of the fishing season.
C.In the early morning of a weekend.
D.When they were on their way home.
44.Why did Tom’s father ask him to put the fish back?
A.Because the fish was too small.
B.Because it was not the fishing season yet.
C.Because Tom broke the fishing rules.
D.Because they didn’t have a place to keep the fish.
45.What does the underlined sentence “he does see that same fish again and again” mean?
A.He often catches the same kind of big fish when he goes fishing.
B.He often remembers the experience and thinks about moral choices.
C.He often sees the same fish swimming in the lake where he fished.
D.He often meets people who have the same experience as him.
46.What does the story mainly tell us?
A.Fishing is a good hobby for both parents and children.
B.We should always do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
C.It’s easy to catch a big fish, but hard to make friends.

Paper-cutting is one of the most popular traditional Chinese folk arts. It has a long history, dating back to the 6th century. In ancient times, paper-cutting was often used for religious and ceremonial purposes. As time went by, it gradually became a form of decoration for everyday life, especially during festivals.
The art of paper-cutting mainly uses red paper as the main material, because red stands for good luck and happiness in Chinese culture. ▲ Skilled artisans use scissors or knives to cut paper into various patterns, such as flowers, birds, animals, and even stories from Chinese legends. For example, the pattern of a fish often symbolizes surplus and prosperity, because the pronunciation of “fish” in Chinese is similar to the word for “surplus”.
In different parts of China, paper-cutting has its own unique styles. The northern style is usually bold and simple, with strong lines and a focus on the general shape of the subject. On the other hand, the southern style is more delicate and intricate, with fine-detailed patterns that show the superb skills of the artisans.
Today, paper-cutting is not only still popular in Chinese homes during the Spring Festival, when people paste paper-cuttings on windows and doors to add a festive atmosphere, but it has also gained international recognition. Many art exhibitions around the world show Chinese paper-cutting works, allowing people from different cultures to enjoy the beauty of this traditional art form.
47.Which of the following sentences can be put in the ▲ in Paragraph 2?

Great Ants
Ants are everywhere! We usually feel annoyed about them. However, these little animals also teach us a lot of great lessons.
First, ants never give up. If something is in their way, they do not stop or become sad. They just keep going. One day, I watched a small ant taking a bug back to its nest. A leaf was in its way, but the ant didn’t give up. It tried very hard and finally got the bug over the leaf.
Second, ants ask for help when they need it. You will never see an ant move something too big by itself. When a load is too heavy, the ant will signal to other ants for help.
Third, ants always plan ahead. They collect food all through the summer, even when they have enough to eat. So when winter comes, they can stay in their warm nest and never worry about hunger.
How great the ants are!
