We often record the sound of morning reading in the classroom, the soft wind in the school trees, and the happy sound of students playing basketball on the playground. After collecting all these sounds, we work together to make a special sound show for all the teachers and students in our school. Last month, we carefully recorded the sound of rain on the classroom windows. It was soft and very relaxing. Our teacher told us that such gentle sounds could help us relax when we are stressed from heavy study. This project is really fun and means a lot. It teaches us to slow down and enjoy the simple beauty in our daily school life. I love taking part in it, and I hope more students will join us in the future.

The compass is one of the most useful tools ever invented. It helps people find directions when they travel. Without it, getting from one place to another would be much harder.
How does a compass work? The Earth is like a very big magnet (磁铁). It has a North Pole and a South Pole. The needle(指针) of a compass is also a small magnet. It can turn around freely. The Earth’s magnetic pull makes the needle always point to the north. Once you know where north is, you can find south, east, and west too.
The first compasses were made in China more than 2,000 years ago. People used a special rock called lodestone(天然磁石) to make them. Lodestone is a natural magnet. These early compasses were very simple. They were not used for travel at first. People used them for feng shui. They believed it helped them build houses in the right way.
Everything changed about 1,000 years ago. Chinese sailors started to use compasses on their ships. This was very important. Before that, sailors had to look at the sun or stars to find their way. But on cloudy days, they could not see the sun or stars. They could easily get lost. With a compass, they could sail anywhere, even when the sky was grey. They could travel far across the ocean and find their way home again.
Today, compasses are everywhere. Many smartphones have small compasses inside. Cars and planes use GPS to find directions. GPS is like a very smart compass that uses satellites in space. But even with all these new technologies, the idea is still the same. We still need to know which way we are going.
19. What makes the compass needle point north?
A. The sun. B. The wind. C. The stars in the sky. D. The Earth’s magnetic pull.
20. Why was the compass so important for Chinese sailors 1,000 years ago?
A. Because they could sail faster. B. Because they could carry more things.
C. Because they could see the stars better. D. Because they could find their way on cloudy days.
21. According to the passage, what do many smartphones have inside?
A. A small star. B. A small ship.
C. A small magnet. D. A small compass.
22. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain how to use a compass.
B. To explain why the Earth is like a magnet.
C. To introduce different kinds of modern compasses.
D. To introduce the history and importance of the compass.

Do you often laugh with friends? Do you giggle at jokes? If you do, that is great, because just as the saying goes: Laughter is the best medicine!
People start laughing from a young age. At around three months old, babies learn to laugh. Even babies that cannot see or hear can laugh. Laughter is a natural part of life! But why is it so important?
First of all, laughter is good for our body. When we laugh, our body takes in more oxygen (氧气). Every part of our body needs it to work well. Laughter also makes our body work out. Our heart, stomach, and even our shoulders work hard when we laugh! But after we laugh, our muscles feel more relaxed. A good laugh can help you feel relaxed for up to 45 minutes. Over time, laughter helps our body to get stronger, fight off more diseases, and even create special chemicals to help us feel less pain!
Laughter also has many benefits for our mood. When we laugh, it makes us feel less stressed or anxious, and things will not seem so bad. Laughing also causes our brain to release chemicals that make us feel calm and happy. Scientists even think that smiling often is enough to increase these chemicals in our brain.
But it is not always easy to laugh on our own. We are 30 times more likely to laugh when we are around others. According to some scientists, laughter can show others that we want to be close to them. Monkeys clean one another’s fur to show friendship. But people laugh so that others will know that they are being friendly.
Some people even join laughing groups. Although they force themselves to laugh at first, after hearing other people laugh, their laughter becomes real! Before long, the whole group of people is laughing hard.
The next time you feel unhappy, try thinking about something funny. Although you might not want to laugh when you are sad, doing so can make you feel better!
23. When do people start laughing according to the passage?
A. At about one year old. B. At about three years old.
C. At about one month old. D. At about three months old.
24. Why does the writer ask “Why is it so important?” at the end of Paragraph 2?
A. To end the paragraph with a question.
B. To explain why babies start laughing early.
C. To show that laughter is difficult to understand.
D. To introduce the reasons and examples that follow.
25. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Laughter. B. Our body. C. Oxygen. D. Medicine.
26. What is the writer’s attitude (态度) toward laughter?
A. Positive—the writer believes laughter is helpful.
B. Negative—the writer thinks laughter is not good.
C. Doubtful—the writer is not sure if laughter helps.
D. Unclear—the writer does not show his or her feelings.
【答案】23. D 24. D 25. C 26. A

【26题详解】
第1段、第3段、第4段、第7段“Laughter is the best medicine!”“laughter is good for our body”“many benefits for our mood”“try thinking about something funny...can make you feel better”,作者多次使用“good”“benefits”“feel better”等积极词汇,明确表达相信笑声有益的正面态度。

①Venice is a city like no other. Built on more than 100 small islands in northeastern Italy, it has canals instead of streets. People travel by boat or on foot across hundreds of bridges. This uniqueness (独特性) makes Venice a very special city. The most famous boats are gondolas—long, narrow boats that have been used in Venice for centuries.
②The city’s history goes back more than 1,500 years. In the Middle Ages, Venice was a powerful trading center. Its rich traders brought goods from Asia and the Middle East. The city became famous for its art, music, and glass-making. Many beautiful palaces and churches were built along the canals during this time.
③Today, Venice faces serious problems. The city has been slowly going down for centuries. The ground under it is soft, and the weight of buildings presses it down. In recent years, rising sea levels caused by climate change have made the situation worse. High water, called “acqua alta”, often floods the city’s famous squares and ancient buildings. Sometimes people have to walk on raised wooden walkways to get around.
④Another problem is tourism. Before 2020, about 20 million visitors came to Venice each year. Crowds fill the narrow streets, and big ships cause waves that harm the old buildings. Many local people have left because the city has become too expensive and crowded. Today, only about 50,000 people live in the historic center—far fewer than in the past.
⑤People are trying to save Venice. They use barriers (屏障) to stop high water from hurting the city. When the sea gets too high, the barriers go up to stop the water. The government is also letting fewer big ships in and thinking about how to make fewer tourists come. We still don’t know if these ways will work.
27. Which of the following correctly matches each time period with what happened?

28. What is one reason why many local people have left Venice?
A. There are no job opportunities. B. The city is too dangerous to live in.
C. The government asked them to leave. D. There is a high cost of living.
29. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The efforts to save Venice. B. The ways to make barriers.
C. The problems caused by tourists. D. The history of Venice’s buildings.
30. What is the structure of the text?
A. B.
C. D.

C
D
Time Period Description
i. Middle Ages a. Venice was a powerful trading center.
ii. Before 2020 b. Rising sea levels made flooding worse.
iii. Recent years c. About 20 million tourists came each year.
A. i-b, ii-c, iii-a B. i-a, ii-c, iii-b C. i-a, ii-b, iii-c D. i-b, ii-a, iii-c
A. B.
C. D.
