Amy and Simon are talking about international charities. Listen to their conversation and answer the following questions.
1. What charity are Amy and Simon talking about?
Operation Smile.
2. When was it founded?
In 1982.
3. What does it do?
It provides free operations and medical care for children born
with lip problems.
Operation Smile is an international medical charity that helps children with facial differences.
It was founded in 1982 by Dr. Bill Magee (a plastic surgeon) and his wife Kathy Magee (a nurse).
What they do: They provide free, safe surgery to repair cleft lips, cleft palates, and other facial deformities in children and young adults.
Where they work: They operate in over 60 countries around the world.
Who helps: A global team of 6,000+ volunteer doctors, nurses, and medical professionals.
Impact: Since 1982, they have helped hundreds of thousands of children by giving them a new smile and a better life.
Let's read
Amy: Do you know any important charities?
Simon: Yes. For example, I’ve heard of Operation Smile. It was founded in 1982. There are about 6,000 medical volunteers in this organization.
Amy: So what do they do?
Simon: Millons of children were born with lip problems. It’s difficult for them to breathe, eat and speak. Operation Smile provides them with free operations and medical care.
Amy: That’s great!
Simon: It is. Thanks to Operation Smile, every year, lots of children are helped and given a new life.
Read in different roles.
Let's talk
Work in groups and talk about the charity,
using the conversation in Part B on page 93 as a model.

B: Yes. For example, I’ve heard of ... It was founded in ... There are ...
A: So what do they do?
B: ...
A: That’s great!
B: It is. Thanks to ..., many people ...
WWF protect the environment and wild animals…
