During my teenage years, my mother started a special habit of calling one neighbor every evening. When I was 16, I didn’t understand why she talked with people she hardly knew. One night, I heard her talking to an elderly neighbor about simple things like dinner and roses in the park. When I asked why she discussed such usual topics, she replied, “I might be the only person she spoke to today. Even small conversations show someone cares.”
Thirty years later, I finally understood her actions. Many elderly people feel lonely because their friends and family members pass away, leaving them with fewer social connections. Health problems often stop them from going out. The loneliness can lead to sadness, emptiness, and even depression (抑郁).
My mother’s calls did more than share news. They became important ways that kept lonely older people connected to the world. Her strong wish to keep these friendship going taught me an important lesson about kindness. I once thought her talks were unimportant, but now I realize each call helps neighbors feel important and less alone.
This story shows how simple acts of care — like a phone call can brighten someone’s day.
