Pair work. Discuss with your partner some examples of people and nature living in harmony with each other. Step 1 Work in groups. Search for information about examples of humans living in harmony with nature in China. They can be in your hometown or community or other places in China. Then take a group vote to decide on the example. • What is the example? What are the benefits to humans? • How does it respect nature? What are the benefits to nature? Step 1 What is the example? What are the benefits to humans? Our example is the restoration of Xiamen's wetland parks in Fujian. Once a polluted tidal flat, it has been turned into a thriving "sea forest" ecosystem through ecological protection efforts, benefiting both humans and wildlife. The wetland acts as a natural barrier against typhoons and storm surges, protecting local communities. It also offers a green public space for recreation and eco-tourism, improving people's quality of life while supporting the local economy. Step 1 How does it respect nature? What are the benefits to nature? The project respects nature by using only native mangrove species and keeping most areas undisturbed as wildlife reserves. Human activities are limited to wooden boardwalks, so visitors can enjoy the wetland without harming its habitats. The restored wetland now provides a safe home for over 148 bird species, including rare black-faced spoonbills, as well as fish and crabs. Mangroves also filter pollutants, improve water quality, and stabilize the shoreline to protect the coastal ecosystem. Step 2 Create your presentation. Sample Xiamen's wetland parks Hi everyone! Today, I'll share an example of humans living in harmony with nature—Xiamen's wetland parks. Xiamen is a nice coastal city in Fujian, China. It has good weather and is called a "garden city". Xiamen built wetland parks to protect local wetland homes. These parks have natural wetlands, man-made lakes, and green areas. First, the city made strict rules to stop too much building in wetlands. Then, we planted local plants to bring back natural greenery (绿植物). In this way, we give local animals a good place to live. Sample For nature, these parks protect Xiamen's biodiversity Many birds, fish, and insects live here. They help keep nature balanced. For us, the parks are great for relaxing. They let us get close to nature, enjoy nice views, and breathe fresh air. Thanks to the parks, people also learn why wetlands matter and how to protect the environment. I think we can learn from this. By respecting nature and making more such nice spaces, we can enjoy nature and protect it too. In the future, more cities should do like Xiamen. This way, humans and nature both get a better home. Step 3 Practise and show your presentation to the class. Step 4 Vote on the best three presentations. 03 Reflection After completing this unit, I understand more about the relationship between nature and us. natural resources change To express my understanding, I can ... use words and expressions in the unit to talk about our relationship with nature: use object clauses with what, where, how, why and when to talk about living by the laws of nature. describe how we can live in harmony with nature. * 1=excellent 2=good 3=not yet I still need to improve: _____________________________________ _____________________________________________________ 04 Homework Review the key words and phrases of this lesson. Based on the given sample, revise your presentation again. Review the knowledge learned this semester to prepare for the final exam. See you in the next class! $
