I have a problem recently, and I really need your help.
We had the final exam last Tuesday. And the result came out on Thursday. I got an A in English, a B in Chinese, but an F in maths. I’m very sad. You know I worked hard on maths.
My parents are worried about me, especially my mother. She hopes that I will be a doctor like my father. But my dream is to be a tennis player. I have been in the school tennis team since Grade 5. And I play tennis every Wednesday and Saturday.
My mother thinks I spend too much time on tennis, and that’s why I got an F in math this time. She asked me to stop playing tennis, but it is my favorite sport. I think I am getting stronger because of the sport. I wonder whether I should give it up. Can you help me?
Yours,
Tom

Trevor walked home from the bus stop. It was the first time his parents wouldn’t be home to greet him after school. They had a meeting at his elder brother’s high school. Trevor finally had the house to himself.
He took out his key and opened the door. Trevor was greeted by his dog, Molly. “Hey, guy. Just me!” Trevor said. He put his key on the side table and threw his schoolbag on the floor. “What should I do first?”
Trevor turned on the TV and got some snacks. After watching a few shows, he looked at the dog. “Want to go outside and play?” He picked up a tennis ball, leading to the backyard. Taking the wooden stick out of the door track (滑轨), he set it on the floor—his mother always said it added more protection.
Trevor ran out with Molly, closing the door behind him. He ran after the dog all around the house. When he got tired, he threw the tennis ball high into the air. “Go get it, Molly!” Several throws later, Trevor and the dog were tired and cold. “Time to go inside and warm up.” He led Molly to the glass door and pulled—but it didn’t move. “Huh?” Peering inside, he saw the stick was back in the track. His cat, Misha, was lying up against it.
“No! We’re locked out.” He ran to the front door and pulled hard. Locked. He tried all the windows on the first floor. Locked. Trevor sat in the backyard and waited until his parents came home.
His mom returned. “What are you doing out here?”
“Misha locked us out.” Trevor rushed inside and to the fireplace to warm up.
“Being home alone wasn’t exactly what you thought it would be, huh?” Mom asked.
“I know one thing for sure,” Trevor said. “Next time I’m home alone and go out to play with the dog, I’m bringing my house key.”

③ Trevor found he was locked out.
④ Trevor took the stick out of the track.

I have now been learning French for two years. Recently I’ve noticed that learning French is quite similar to my practice of the djembe
To be honest, I was good neither at playing musical instruments nor at learning foreign languages. But one of the great lessons of my childhood is that no one is naturally good at anything. There is a special joy in becoming good at something that I was incompetent at naturally.
As a kid, I learned to play the djembe. I had a pretty good ear for rhythm (韵律), but no physical control. For the first year, my performance was terrible. But after two years of practice, I started to make progress. When I finally decided to give up on the instrument, my teacher said my performance was “okay”.
But I didn’t just feel “okay”. I felt like a king because I knew where I came from. I knew the great distance (距离) between “terrible” and “okay”. While I believe in natural talent, I don’t think it’s worth talking about. If I want to have a skill, I just need to practice it again and again.
So, to speak French, I know I need a different mouth. My words and breath always seem to live elsewhere, even in my resting sounds between pieces of speech. For example, when an American is trying to think of something, she often goes “Uhh, Uhh.” But the French will say “Euh, Euh.” It is not enough just to remember all the words. You have to train your mouth to say them. You need a lot of practice.
My journey of learning French has continued. When I started to learn the language, my teacher told me it would take me five years to learn it well. Now, I’m thinking it could easily take me ten.
23. What does the writer find while studying French?
A. It takes less time than playing the djembe.
B. It is more difficult than learning the djembe.
C. It has a lot in common with practicing the djembe.
D. It can help improve the skills of playing the djembe.
24. What does the underlined phrase “was incompetent at” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. was bad at B. was interested in C. was bored with D. was proud of
25. Why did the writer feel like a king?
A. He had natural talent for skills. B. He became perfect in speaking French.
C. He didn’t need to practice much anymore. D. He understood how much he had improved.
26. What can be the best title of the text?
A. Why We Need Talent B. The Special Joy in Learning
C. How to Play the Djembe D. A Journey of Studying Abroad
C 24. A 25. D 26. B
第一段指出:“Recently I’ve noticed that learning French is quite similar to my practice of the djembe.”,similar to与have a lot in common同义,说明学法语和练习非洲手鼓有很多共同点。
第二段指出:“I was good neither at playing musical instruments nor at learning foreign languages... becoming good at something that I was incompetent at naturally.”,前文说明作者原本两样都不擅长,结合语境可知该短语意为“不擅长、做得不好”,与was bad at同义。
第四段指出:“I felt like a king because I knew where I came from. I knew the great distance between ‘terrible’ and ‘okay’.”,表明作者清楚自己从糟糕到合格的巨大进步,因此产生强烈成就感。
全文以学手鼓、学法语的经历,讲述从不擅长到慢慢进步的过程,第二段核心句“There is a special joy in becoming good at something...”
D
After exercising, the first thing that many of us want to do is drink up a glass of cold water. To feel the water travel down is so good. However, many people have often told me not to do so. Is drinking cold water really unhealthy? What does science have to say about it? Let’s find out.
Cold water is said to slow down a person’s digestion (消化). Most researchers believe that having cold water or a cold drink reduces our body’s temperature. Therefore, the body needs to burn energy to bring our temperature back up to normal. This energy could be spent digesting the food we have just eaten.
Think of your digestive system as a hot pot that cooks food. If someone suddenly throws cold water into this burning pot, what will happen? Doing this will be dangerous. Similarly, when you drink cold water while eating, it’s like adding water to a hot pot.
Of course, it isn’t that bad. But it is a good way to explain why drinking cold water may be a bad idea. That’s why many experts suggest that you avoid drinking water during meals. If you can’t help doing so, drinking water at room temperature is a better choice.
Some studies have found that cold water also makes headaches worse. Dr. Peter Mattson supports this idea. His study found that a lot of women experienced headaches after drinking cold water.
Another problem that often happens as a result of drinking cold water is more mucus (黏液) in your nose and throat. For thousands of years, traditional Chinese medicine has told people not to drink cold drinks. Modern studies have also pointed out that drinking cold water is harmful to your health. So, you’d better not put ice in your water!
27. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By asking questions. B. By using numbers.
C. By showing a picture. D. By telling a story.
28. What can we know from Paragraph 2 and 3?
A. Cold water causes high body temperature.
B. Drinking water while eating is a good idea.
C. A hot pot is usually used to heat cold water.
D. The body needs energy to warm up cold water.
29. What might happen if you drink cold water?
A. You might lose the sense of smell. B. You will eat more food for each meal.
C. You may have a headache more easily. D. You may need to buy Chinese medicine.
30. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To explain how young people keep healthy.
B. To teach people what to do after exercising.
C. To advise people to avoid drinking cold water.
D. To ask people to drink enough water every day.
A 28. D 29. C 30. C
原文第一段通过“Is drinking cold water really unhealthy? What does science have to say about it?”
第2段提到“having cold water... reduces our body’s temperature. Therefore, the body needs to burn energy to bring our temperature back up to normal”,说明身体需要消耗能量来提升体温,也就是为冷水升温。
第5段提到“Some studies have found that cold water also makes headaches worse... a lot of women experienced headaches after drinking cold water”,说明喝冷水可能会加重头痛,让人更容易头痛。
文章从多方面分析喝冷水的危害,并在结尾指出“you’d better not put ice in your water”,目的是建议人们避免喝冷水。

A. Who can be a smokejumper?

I didn’t even ____49____ the mess they made in our room. I couldn’t believe this, but I knew I was going to ____50____ Syd after I went back home. I would never forget this summer.
36. A. shared B. cleaned C. checked D. entered
37. A. dishonest B. untidy C. friendly D. polite

In the lake、paddle、boat,可以判断活动是boating“划船”。
because of“因为”、according to“根据”、just like“就像”因果、逻辑关系均不成立。
me“我”、us“我们”、them“他们”指代对象错误。

19. How might Trevor feel about being home alone at first?
A. Excited. B. Lonely. C. Bored. D. Calm.
20. What does the underlined “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The floor. B. The dog. C. The tennis ball. D. The wooden stick.

③ Trevor found he was locked out.
④ Trevor took the stick out of the track.
A. ①④②③ B. ①③②④ C. ②①④③ D. ②④③①
22. What can we learn about Trevor from the text?
A. He was quite angry with Misha for keeping him out.
B. He learned to solve problems by asking others for help.
C. He was sure to play outside with the house key next time.
D. He believed his parents wouldn’t leave him alone any more.

A. To explain how young people keep healthy.
B. To teach people what to do after exercising.
C. To advise people to avoid drinking cold water.
D. To ask people to drink enough water every day.
