In school, we are told to drink water between classes. Our parents ask us to bring our water bottles to school and we’re reminded by experts that water is good for our skin and helps control our weight. But how much should we actually be drinking?
For many years, people have followed the advice of drinking eight glasses of water, eight times a day, known as the“8×8 rule”. According to Jessica Brown, this seems to have partly come from a misunderstanding of old advice that was published almost 80 years ago. In 1945, a study advised drinking one millilitre (毫升) of liquid for each calorie (卡路里) of food. This is about two litres of water a day, or eight glasses per person. But, Jessica says, the reality is that different people have different needs. Weight, age and activity level all play a role in how much water someone should drink.
Then do we need to control how much water we drink? It’s not that important, according to Dr. Stanley Goldfarb from the University of Pennsylvania. He says our bodies are good at telling us when we need water. When we are thirsty, it means our bodies need more water. Our kidneys (肾脏) help us keep the water we have, even before we feel thirsty.
There are, of course, benefits to drinking water. It helps our bodies stay at the right temperature. It helps us keep away bad things in our bodies. It helps us digest (消化) food. It protects our joints (关节).
So, next time you feel thirsty, reach for a glass of water. But don’t worry if you don’t drink exactly eight glasses a day. Your body knows what it needs.

In our daily life, time is a precious resource. However, many students don’t manage their time well.
Some students often procrastinate. They put off doing their homework until the last minute. This not only causes stress but also affects the quality of their work. For example, if a student has a week to finish a project but only starts working on it the night before the deadline, the result may not be as good as it could be.
Time management is crucial for achieving our goals. By making a proper schedule, we can balance our study, hobbies, and rest. We can set aside specific time for each task. For instance, we can allocate two hours for studying math, one hour for reading, and some time for physical activities.
The word “prioritize” is key in time management. It means deciding which tasks are more important and dealing with them first. If we have a test coming up and a non-urgent club activity at the same time, we should prioritize the test preparation.
In conclusion, learning to manage time effectively can lead to a more productive and less stressful life. Teachers and parents should guide students to develop good time-management skills. It is a skill that will benefit them throughout their lives.
43. What does the word “procrastinate” mean in the passage?
A. Do things in time. B. Put off doing things. C. Do things quickly. D. Do things randomly.

45. Why is time management important?
A. Because it can make us less stressed. B. Because it can make us more popular.
C. Because it can make us have more hobbies. D. Because it can make us sleep better.
46. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Students can manage time well without any guidance.
B. Time management is only important for students.
C. Good time-management skills can help in different aspects of life.
D. Only teachers need to care about time management.
47. What is the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To tell students how to make a schedule. B. To stress the importance of time management.
C. To introduce different ways of time management. D. To criticize students for not managing time well.
D
On November 8, a large new airship called Pathfinder 1 made its first test flights (飞行) in California. The airship was built by LTA Research, a company that’s hoping to make an old method of transportation new again.
The new airship is at 400 feet long, it’s far longer than a football field. It’s the largest airship of its kind since the 1930s. But the Pathfinder 1 is built using many new ideas, and new materials.
Unlike planes, airships fly because they are full of gas that is lighter than air. Airships were especially popular in the early 1900s. They were used for transportation, for spying, and were even used in war. But most of that ended in 1937, after an airship called the Hindenburg caught fire and burned as it was landing. Hydrogen gas, which does burn, was responsible for this accident. The accident scared people away from airships. By that time, planes were improving quickly. From then on, most air travel focused on (关注于) airplanes.
Now, a company called LTA (Lighter Than Air) Research is hoping to change that. The money for LTA comes from Sergey Brin, one of the two people who started Google. He hired (聘用) Alan Weston to run LTA. Both men have always liked airships. And they believe airships can be used to move people and materials quickly and without polluting.
From the outside, Pathfinder 1 looks similar to the airships of the 1930s. But Pathfinder 1 is completely new. For one thing, the ship gets its lift from Helium—a gas that does not burn. The Pathfinder 1 has 12 electric motors (电动机). The motors make it possible for the airship to take off and land without a runway. The Pathfinder 1 can fly at speeds of up to 75 mph.
Pathfinder 1 can carry about 4 tons of people and things. LTA hopes to show that airships can provide a low-pollution way to move cargo (货物) over a long way. Mr. Brin is especially interested in using airships to help people out in emergency situations, such as after an earthquake or a hurricane, when roads are closed and there’s no place for planes to land.
48. What’s the theme of the passage?
A. Culture. B. Biology. C. Environment. D. Science.
49. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. LTA and Sergey Brin. B. Two men from Google.
C. Sergey and Alan Weston. D. Alan Weston and Google.
50. Why did the airships become less popular than planes after 1937?
A. The materials to build the airships were not easy to find.
B. A terrible accident was caused by an airship called the Hindenburg.
C. The airships in the early 1900s were smaller and lighter than planes.
D. No companies would spend money and energy improving the airships.
51. What advantages of Pathfinder 1 may have among the airships according to the passage? Choose the right answer.
①Being safer ②Carrying more things ③Being smarter
④Being cheaper ⑤Landing more easily
A. ①②⑤ B. ①③⑤ C. ②③④ D. ②③⑤
52. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Many people always like airships and hope to bring airships back.
B. It’s possible to use airships in emergency situations instead of planes.
C. The Pathfinder 1 has the same looks and motors as the airships in the 1900s.
D. The Pathfinder 1 has been put into use in many fields because of less pollution.
B)
Chinese scientists have discovered a new water reservoir (蓄水池) on the moon in the form of glass beads (玻璃珠). The glass beads might help with astronauts’ work in the future.
China’s Chang’e-5 lunar probe (月球探测器) collected something from the moon. Scientists found glass beads were hiding in it and that they held water. ____53____ They are created when small things moving in space hit the moon’s surface. Even though each glass bead only holds a little water, there are so many of them on the moon that scientists think there might be 270 billion metric tons of water on the moon!
This is a very important discovery. Scientists thought the moon was completely dry. ____54____ This finding helps scientists understand more about how water is stored in space.
Do you know what is even more exciting? This discovery could help people in the future. Scientists think it might be useful for planning to build homes for humans on other planets. ____55____
However, some problems have to be solved. The first problem is where exactly the water on the moon comes from. ____56____ Others believe it might have gotten trapped (困住) when the moon was hot. Another idea is that other objects or planets brought the water to the moon.
Using these special glass beads to support future tasks about the moon sounds like a great idea, right? ____57____ — we need to find out how to turn these glass beads into water in space.
Isn’t it fascinating to learn about all these discoveries? There’s still so much to find out in space!
A. Isn’t that amazing?
B. When did scientists discover the water reservoir on the moon?
C. But there’s also another problem.
D. But now they know it’s not!
E. What will the moon be like in the future?
F. Why are there glass beads?
G. Some scientists think it could be from the solar wind.

1. The teacher praised the student for being ________ about making a mistake in the exam.
A. shy B. brave C. honest D. outgoing
2. —What a beautiful vase!
—The artist used clay to ________ it with special patterns.
A. clean B. heat C. plant D. shape
3. I won’t go for a walk ________ I finish my homework on time.
A. as B. unless C. since D. if
as当……
4. Computers have played an important part in our life since they ________.
A. are invented B. were invented
C. have been invented D. invented
5. The housing price in my hometown has increased by two percent the past two
months.
A. during B. till C. at D. on
【答案】A
A. during介词,在...期间; B. till介词或连词,直到;C. at介词,在;D. on介词,在。 the past two month表示一段时间,只有介词during能与一段时间连用,其它介词表示时间点,则不能与一段时间连用。而且during the past two months能与现在完成时态连用。故选A。
6. —There were already five people in the car but they managed to take me as well.
—It _______ a comfortable journey.
A. can’t be B. shouldn’t be
C. mustn’t have been D. couldn’t have been
【答案】D
【详解】句意:--车里已经有五个人了,但是他们还设法带着我。--它不可能是一次舒适的旅行。A. can’t be不可能是,是对现在的推测; B. shouldn’t be不应该是,是对现在的推测。根据第一句可知,这里的旅行发生在过去,所以对现在的推测的选项是不正确的,故排除AB;
C;D. couldn’t have been表示对过去的推测“过去不可能是”。故选D。

Once, I felt very upset and failed an important exam. My deskmate gave me a big, warm smile. It cheered me up and gave me lots of courage.
