For nearly four decades, Rich Ruohonen had been trying to get to the Olympics. At 54, he finally made it — not as a star player, but as an alternate for Team Casper, the Gen-Z curlers (冰壶选手) representing the United States at the 2026 Winter Games.
But the road to Italy was never smooth. Ruohonen's Olympic dream dates back to 1988, when curling was still a trial sport at the Calgary Winter Games. In the decades since, he came close more than once — most heartbreakingly four years ago, when his team finished third. Yet he kept going.
On Thursday, Ruohonen finally got his moment on Olympic ice. The U.S. team fell behind Switzerland's Team Schwaller by six points after the seventh end, with little chance of winning. At the start of the eighth end, Ruohonen subbed (替补) in, throwing two rocks and sweeping a path for other rocks thrown by his teammates. “Yeah, good shot, Rich,” shouted Danny Casper, as his rock settled perfectly into a corner guard position.
It was only two throws, but it was enough. When Ruohonen stepped onto the ice that day, he wasn't just playing an end. He was making history. At 54, he became the oldest U.S. athlete ever to compete in the Winter Olympics, breaking a record set in 1932 by figure skater Joseph Savage, who was 52 at the Lake Placid Games.
After the match, Casper made it clear that Ruohonen's presence on the ice was not a gesture of kindness. “We're not doing him a favor by putting him in. He deserves it,” he said. “It was already on our mind, and I'm glad we got him in.”
For Ruohonen, the moment meant everything. “To get here and throw two rocks is all I wanted,” he said. “It means that perseverance pays off.”
Two rocks. Forty years. On a sheet of ice in Italy, Rich Ruohonen finally let them go.
24. What do we know about Rich Ruohonen in the 2026 Winter Olympics?
A. He played in all of the matches.
B. He won a gold medal in curling.
C. He competed as the team captain.
D. He set a new age record for U.S. athletes.
25. What can be inferred from Danny Casper's words in Paragraph 5?
A. He was unwilling to let Ruohonen play.
B. He put Ruohonen in against teammates' will.
C. He believed Ruohonen worthy of the opportunity.
D. He considered Ruohonen's replacement a mistake.
26. What does Rich Ruohonen's experience show?
A. Better to do well than to say well. B. Opportunity seldom knocks twice.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Never too late to go after your dream.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. A 40-Year Wait for Two Rocks B. The Oldest Olympian in History
C. Team Casper's Road to Victory D. The Importance of Being an Alternate
C
Climate change is a huge threat to polar bears, but scientists now believe that some of the animals are evolving to survive in a world with higher temperatures and less sea ice. Adapting to these conditions is rewriting the bears’ DNA.
Most polar bears live on sea ice in the Arctic region, including parts of Greenland. They rely on the ice as a base to hunt animals like seals, which make up most of their high-fat diet. But as global temperatures rise, sea ice is melting. If this continues, experts predict that more than 60% of the polar bear population could disappear by 2050.
Scientists compared polar bears in northern Greenland to an isolated (隔离的) group living in southern Greenland, where temperatures are warmer and there is less sea ice. Both groups of bears were once part of the same population, but some moved south about 200 years ago. To understand how the southern population is surviving, a team of researchers analyzed DNA samples from 17 bears.
All animals have pieces of DNA called “jumping genes” that can move from one location to another. When they move, they can change how other genes behave. The study found that jumping genes were more active in the southern bears compared to the northern ones. This increased activity seemed to be linked to higher temperatures.
The genes caused changes in how the bears’ bodies cope with heat and how they age. They also affected how the body processes fat, which becomes important when food is hard to get. According to the study, the southern bears have been eating more plants instead of fatty seals.
Lead researcher Alice Godden called the study’s results “hopeful” because they show that polar bears are rewriting their DNA to adapt to climate change. However, she said, this is a “desperate survival mechanism against melting sea ice” and Godden pointed out that there are limits to how much the animals can adapt. “We still need to be doing everything we can to slow temperature increases,” she told The Guardian.
28. What causes most of the polar bears to disappear by 2050?
A. The high-fat diet. B. The melting of sea ice.
C. The extinction of seals. D. The pollution of the sea.
29. What aspect of the study does Paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. Its key findings. B. Its research design.
C. Its practical significance. D. Its potential limitations.
30. How have jumping genes helped southern polar bears?
A. By changing body and diet. B. By improving hunting skills.
C. By sharpening sense of sight. D. By increasing physical exercise.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the text?
A. Polar bears’ climate change adaptation is limitless.
B. Study provides a solution to polar bears’ survival.
C. Human efforts to slow global warming still matter.
D. Polar bears have already adapted to climate change.

If you’re trying to improve your heart health, you’ve likely been recommended a low-carb (低碳水) or low-fat diet. But according to a new study in Journal of American College of Cardiology, simply limiting carbs and fats may not be the answer — what matters more is the quality of what you eat.
Harvard researchers analyzed diet data and health outcomes of nearly 200,000 health professionals over 30 years. They compared participants who followed low-carb diets and found that heart disease risk could actually increase by 14 percent if the person regularly consumed unhealthy carbs. However, if they ate healthy carbs like whole grains, the risk dropped by 15 percent.
The study also distinguished (区别) between fat sources. Unhealthy fats — like trans fats and saturated fats found in red meat and butter — were connected with higher disease risk. In contrast, healthy fats from sources like avocados and nuts were easy for the body to metabolize (代谢) and offered cardio-protective benefits. Participants who consumed more plant-based proteins and fats showed lower heart disease risk compared to those who relied on animal fats and proteins.
“Our central message is that diet quality matters more than simply cutting carbs or fats,” said Zhiyuan Wu, coauthor of the study from Harvard’s nutrition department. The findings suggest that health outcomes depend less on how much of a macronutrient you eat, and more on which kinds of diet you choose.
To strengthen their conclusions, researchers went a step further. They collected blood samples from over 11,000 participants and measured metabolomics — the small molecules produced by the body in response to diet. These biological markers confirmed their earlier findings: those who followed healthier low-carb or low-fat diets had higher levels of good cholesterol and lower triglycerides, both of which suggest better heart health.
Interestingly, both healthy low-carb and healthy low-fat dieters showed similar signs of good health. According to Wu, this offers flexibility: “I think that provides more choices with your preference, while still offering cardiovascular protection.” The takeaway is clear — whether you prefer low-carb or low-fat, the key is to focus on whole foods and high-quality sources.
32. What does the underlined word “consumed” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. took in. B. looked for. C. cut out. D. kept off.
33. What can be learned about unhealthy fats?
A. They are linked to higher disease risk.
B. They offer cardio-protective benefits.
C. They are easily broken down by the body.
D. They are mainly found in plant-based foods.
34. Why did researchers collect blood samples?
A. To measure cholesterol levels. B. To confirm their former findings.
C. To compare biological markers. D. To track changes in eating habits.
35. What is the main takeaway from the study?
A. Cutting carbs is the key to heart health.
B. Low-carb diets are better than low-fat diets.
C. Whole foods and quality outweigh diet type.
D. Plant-based diets are the only healthy option.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Being disliked is an unavoidable part of life. And as sociable creatures, we tend to seek acceptance. So finding out someone doesn’t like you can make you feel deeply unsettled. ____36____
Admit and confirm your own feelings.
It’s important to accept your feelings. “Realizing that fearing being disliked is normal — it’s just your natural response to the possibility of being left out — can help you feel less ashamed of it,” says Tina.
____37____
Often, the fear of being disliked comes from our own insecurities, like thinking we’re not good enough. Talking to a therapist can help you understand where these feelings come from and let them go. It also helps to challenge “all-or-nothing” thinking. Ask yourself: What’s the worst that could happen if someone doesn’t like me? Chances are, the fear is much bigger than the reality.
“Remember, others’ opinions are shaped by their own experiences and problems. It’s not always about you,” adds Tina.
Build your network.
“It also helps to take good care of yourself and find people who truly understand, accept, and love you,” says Ali. ____38____
Put yourself in others’ shoes.
Have you ever disliked someone just for small, unimportant reasons? If you have, you’ll find such dislike has nothing to do with their real value. ____39____
Focus on your own values.
Stick to your own values instead of others’ approval. When you stand by what you believe is right, you may be disliked by some people, but this just means you are being true to yourself.
Ultimately, overcoming the fear of being disliked starts with liking yourself. ____40____ With practice, you can embrace the freedom of being your real self.
A. Reshape your thinking.
B. Face your fear calmly.
C. The more people like you, the happier you will be in life.
D. Here are some tips on how to handle the fear of being disliked.
E. When you learn to value who you are, others’ opinions will no longer control your feelings.
F. Instead of worrying about being disliked, focus on building healthy relationships with others.
G. Similarly, if someone dislikes you, it’s often for small reasons — not because of who you are.

67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I was born in the village of Mugaja, DR Congo. The majority of the kids from my village did not go to school at all. I went to school in the mornings. In the afternoons, I followed mum to the garden to help her with family chores. After my work, I’d sit in the summer breeze, back against a tree trunk overlooking the hills. I dreamed of becoming a leader who fights for people’s rights. I wanted to change the terrible things happening to our village.
My father was a cattle keeper. But one day, just as it had happened with others in our village, all our cattle and everything we owned had been stolen by a gang of thieves from the city. My father knew we had to do something to stop this from happening. He looked at me, his tired eyes concerned, “Son, I’m sending you and your brother to school in the city. You must get educated to protect the family rights when you grow up.”
We studied hard in the city for years, growing closer to finishing high school, when suddenly, the peace was destroyed by the outbreak of war. We ran along with hundreds of others fleeing (逃离) the town to a refugee camp (难民营) established in Uganda.
Yet in the refugee camp, my dreams as a boy seemed increasingly out of reach. My father’s target had been destroyed. The study I had done, all the work to get an education, had been blown away by war. I hadn't finished high school, and to make things worse, here in Uganda, they spoke English. I had been schooled in French. That meant I had to go back to lower level primary school and restart my education. The only thing I had to look forward to was food on the table every day. Still, I kept watchful for an opportunity — the opportunity to learn English as quickly as possible. One day, I noticed a man called Mr God Given visiting the camp to look for brickmakers.

Whiteboard Needs Our Better Care
Recently, a worrying phenomenon has arisen in our school: the misuse of the Seewo whiteboard during breaks. Far from being a useful teaching tool, it is being used improperly for entertainment, such as watching videos, listening to music, playing games, and even scribbling meaningless words.
This not only may damage the expensive device but also disturbs classmates who want to rest or prepare for lessons. To solve the problem, clear rules should be made to limit its use to study only. Meanwhile, proper applications should be installed to restrict entertainment access. Most importantly, we students must value public property.
Only in this way can it better serve our study and create a quiet and orderly learning environment.

【答案】参考答案
He spoke English very well, and I saw the golden opportunity. I plucked up my courage, walked up to him and begged him to teach me English. With a kind smile, Mr God Given agreed, saying he was touched by my determination. Every day after making bricks, I spent hours learning English — memorizing words, practicing conversations and reading simple passages. I never felt tired; every word I learned brought me closer to my long-lost dream. Gradually, I could understand and speak English smoothly, and my confidence grew day by day.
Seeing the need to help young refugees, I established an English training centre. At first, only a handful of kids showed up — curious, but hesitant. Slowly, more joined — teenagers who lost their schools to the war. In the following five years, I helped hundreds of refugee kids join Ugandan secondary schools. Many won scholarships due to their excellent performance. The centre became a beacon of hope. For me, it was a way to honor my father’s wish — to use education to empower others, just as I’d been empowered. Every time I saw a student speak English confidently, I knew my childhood dream wasn’t lost — it had grown into something bigger.

You first need to make sure that you have a good diet, lots of fruits and vegetables, no junk food and no sugary foods. And I also think that exercising is very, very important. How often do you exercise? Usually I work out at the gym for around one and half hours each time and try to go at least five times a week. I do like going to the gym, but I enjoy the best when I mix IT with going to classes like yoga classes. Another thing that i'm trying to do is drink more water that helps to boost my energy levels, helps my skin be clearer and helps to control my appetite. As sometimes third can be mistaken for hunger. I like adding lemons to my water to make drinking less boring. One thing that i'm working on right now is having a very healthy sleep routine right now. I'm only sleeping for around five hours a night, and it's been making me feel very tired throughout the day. I've been really worried about my physical health lately. What should I do? I'm eleven, and I played the character of Jessie Carter. My latest movie, Jessie Carter and the angry dogs is in the cinema. Now i'm going to tell you a bit about myself winning. The part was like a dream come true when I was introduced to the film producers. They thought I was just right for Jessie. Neither of us is shy or nervous, unlike some girls of our age. And we're smart. I see my friends just as much as I did before. And to them, i'm still Kelly, which is fine. Actors often move between films and T, V. So do I. A movie can take over three months to film, while AT, V show can be finished in a few days. So they are different, not that this makes one Better than the other. Some TV work is fantastic, and I had great fun playing small parts in a couple of weekly shows. Plane Jessie has given me the chance to travel around amErica and visit some amazing historical places. My plan is to study world history at university. When i'm older, after I finish university, i'd love to go around the world seeing everything i've studied. Hello everyone, i'm Kelly parks.
