They text on the way to class and check social media while waiting for lessons. Silence is filled with screen time, and real conversations seldom happen. Seán Killingsworth, a college student, was worried about this. He thought students were like “zombies (僵尸)” and missed face-to-face talks. So in 2023, he started the Reconnect Movement (运动). Its purpose is to make a change in students’ daily life. Students leave their phones at the door and spend one hour communicating without screens. At first, the phone-free meetings make students feel uncomfortable because they cannot use phones to get over nervousness. But soon they relax and enjoy staying with each other. Members say the activity helps them reconnect with others. They find it more fun when talking to people face to face. Killingsworth calls these meetings “human connection habitats” — where people grow relationships like in nature. The group hopes students can reduce screen time and balance technology with real-life communication. Experts have different ideas about smartphones’ influence on mental health. Some believe screen breaks make people calmer, while others think social media helps students share their feelings. However, the Reconnect Movement shows that real communication — not just screen time — brings people closer. 23. What did Killingsworth do in 2023? A. He gave up using his smartphone. B. He started the Reconnect Movement. C. He made a film about student zombies. 24. What do members finally think of the phone-free meetings? A. Uncomfortable. B. Helpful. C. Harmful. 25. What does the underlined word “habitats” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. 栖息地 B. 自然观 C. 认同感 26. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Phone-Free Meeting: Students’ Worry B. The special gloves help his injured paws heal (爪子痊愈). Goldie got badly hurt in a big bushfire in Australia in 2015. In Australia, terrible fires often break out in spring and summer. There is very little rain during these seasons, so the land becomes very dry and easy to catch fire. This puts koalas in great danger. When koalas try to hold onto burning trees, their paws are easily burned. Healthy paws are very important for a koala to live in the wild. Without healthy paws, koalas cannot climb trees or look for food. That’s why people like Josey Sharrad, who works for an animal group, try their best to help injured koalas. They put special medicine on the burns and cover the paws with cloth to stop infection (感染). However, bad burns can take up to a year to get better, and the cloth bandages (绷带) must be changed every day. To solve this problem, the animal group asked people for knitted mittens. People from many countries, such as China, Russia, the United States and Kazakhstan, quickly gave a helping hand. They sent plenty of mittens to the group. Now there are enough mittens for all the injured koalas. These warm mittens are more than just things to wear for koalas. They are presents of love from people all over the world. Goldie’s story makes us understand that every small kind act can save a life. When we stand with those in need, we make the world a warmer and better place. 27. Why does Goldie wear mittens? A. To keep his paws warm. B. To help his paws get better. C. To look fashionable and cool. 28. Without healthy paws, what problems do koalas face? A. Their bad burns can never get better. B. They cannot get help from the animal group. C. They have difficulty in climbing and finding food. 29. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3? A. Making warm mittens takes a long time. B. Animals in Australia need more protection. C. People around the world helped send mittens. 30. What is the purpose of this passage? A. To show that small kindness can save lives. B.
