All these pieces of paper are used as if they were pure gold or silver. Marco Polo (1254-1324) wrote these words about one of the most wonderful inventions he saw in China: paper money. For 13th century Europeans, this was an amazing idea. Later, they began to print their own paper money too. Today, most money in the world is paper money. We also use plastic cards or online payment now, and virtual money is becoming more and more popular.
The idea of paper money first started in China. For a long time in Chinese history, people used small coins with holes in the middle as money. People put these coins on a string—100 coins for one bunch (串), and usually 10 bunches on the same string. These coin strings were very heavy to carry. Even 1,000 coins were not worth much, so important business deals needed many strings of coins, even whole rooms of them.
To solve this problem, around the late 8th and early 9th centuries (Tang Dynasty), merchants (商人) left their coins with someone and got a paper receipt called “feiqian” (flying money). They could use this paper to do business instead of carrying a lot of heavy coins. In 812, the Tang government began to use paper receipts for big deals. At first, it was not real modern paper money, but it finally led to the first real paper money in the early 11th century. Sometimes paper money was valuable, and sometimes it was almost useless. Once the government even stopped using it, but it was too convenient to give up. In the end, paper money replaced coins for almost all business deals except very small ones.
27. What did Marco Polo think of Chinese paper money when he saw it?
A. It was a boring idea. B. It was an amazing idea.
C. It was almost useless. D. It was as heavy as coins.
28. What did ancient Chinese people use as money for a long time?
A. Paper receipts with holes. B. Gold and silver with holes.
C. Small coins with holes in the middle. D. Plastic cards and virtual money.
29. Which is the correct order of the development of money in China?
①People used feiqian for business. ②The first real paper money appeared.
③People used coin strings as money. ④The Tang government used paper receipts for big deals.
A. ③→①→④→② B. ③→④→①→② C. ①→③→④→② D. ①→④→③→②
30. What was the “feiqian” in the Tang Dynasty?
A. A kind of modern paper money. B. A string with 100 heavy coins.
C. A paper receipt for stored coins. D. A small room to keep coin strings.
31. What can we infer from the passage about paper money?
A. It was always very valuable in history.
B. It was first used by the Tang government in 812 as real money.
C. Europeans printed paper money earlier than Chinese people.
D. It took the place of coins for most business deals at last.
32. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How Marco Polo introduced coins to Europe.
B. The history and development of Chinese paper money.
C. Why virtual money is more popular than paper money now.
D. How ancient Chinese people kept their heavy coin strings.
【答案】27. B 28. C 29. A 30. C 31. D 32. B

Who really owns the lucky money?
A 12-year-old boy recently refused to give his 20,000-yuan lucky money to his mother. It started a heated discussion online.
The mother said the lucky money was just a return gift between families. Parents usually give red envelopes to other children first, and the money their child gets is part of the exchange. So she thought ____2____.
But the boy said the money was a personal gift to him. He should have the right to control it.
I agree with the boy. Lucky money is given to me, not to my parents. It is my own money. I can save it or buy what I need, like books and stationery (文具). If parents take all the money away, we can never learn to manage money.
I don’t agree. Lucky money is not a free gift. It is part of our family culture. When my parents give red envelopes to others, the money I get is just the exchange. If I keep too much money, it will bring pressure to my parents. Also, many teenagers may waste money on games or snacks.
We should talk about financial education, not just who owns the money. We can open a bank account in the child’s name. The money can be divided into savings and daily costs. In this way, children can learn to plan money, and parents can still help and guide them.
Task 1 Answer the questions (回答下列问题)
43. What did the mother think the 20,000-yuan lucky money was?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
44. What do you think might be the mother’s opinion? Complete the sentence.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
45. According to Li Hua, how can children deal with their lucky money?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
46. Why doesn’t Jia Xing think children should keep too much money?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
47. What does Professor Li suggest doing with the lucky money?
___________________________________________________________________________________________
Task 2 Express your own ideas (表达你自己的想法)
48. Who do you agree with, Li Hua, Jia Xing or Professor Li? Share your opinion and give two reasons in about 30 words.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】43. She thought it was just a return gift between families /part of the exchange when parents give red envelopes to other children.
44. the money should belong to the family /she should have the right to take the money /the money is hers to control.
45. They can save it or buy what they need, like books and stationery.
46. Because keeping too much money will bring pressure to parents, and teenagers may waste money on games or snacks.
47. Open a bank account in the child’s name, and divide the money into savings and daily costs, so children can learn to plan money and parents can help guide them.
48. I agree with Jia Xing. Lucky money is part of our family cultural, and teenagers may easily waste the money on games or snacks without parents’ proper guidance. (答案不唯一,回答合理即可)

A. It was a boring idea. B. It was an amazing idea.

28. What did ancient Chinese people use as money for a long time?
A. Paper receipts with holes. B. Gold and silver with holes.

A. It was always very valuable in history.
B. It was first used by the Tang government in 812 as real money.
