教学过程
Lead-in: Arousing Interest and Connecting with Prior Knowledge
The teacher starts the class with a multimedia presentation, showing pictures of Confucius, the Temple of Confucius, and scenes of Confucian thoughts applied in daily life (such as respecting elders, polite communication, and harmonious interpersonal relationships). Then the teacher asks two guiding questions: “Who is Confucius in your mind? Can you list some famous sayings of Confucius that you know?”
After students answer freely, the teacher supplements and summarizes in English: “Confucius is a great thinker, educator and the founder of Confucianism in ancient China. His thoughts have influenced Chinese society for more than 2,000 years and are still closely related to our modern life. Today, we will explore how Confucius’ thoughts affect our society through Section 4 Expanding Our Horizons.”
Design Intention: The use of multimedia materials can visually stimulate students’ senses and arouse their learning interest. Guiding questions can connect students’ prior knowledge of Confucius, narrow the distance between the text and students’ real life, and lay a foundation for the subsequent text learning. At the same time, the teacher’s English summary can imperceptibly cultivate students’ English listening ability and lead them into the English learning context.
Pre-reading: Previewing Vocabulary and Clearing Obstacles
First, the teacher presents the core vocabularies and phrases in the text on the blackboard or PPT, including “Confucianism, benevolence, propriety, righteousness, doctrine of the mean, influence, inherit, promote, moral, virtue, interpersonal, harmony” and so on. For each vocabulary, the teacher explains its pronunciation, part of speech and English meaning, and gives simple example sentences combined with Confucian thoughts, such as “Benevolence is the core of Confucius’ thoughts, which means sincere love and care for others.”
Then, the teacher organizes a small group activity: each group is given 3-4 vocabularies, and they need to make short dialogues or sentences using these vocabularies within 5 minutes, and then send a representative to present their results to the whole class. The teacher comments on the students’ performance, corrects mistakes in pronunciation and grammar, and emphasizes the key points of vocabulary use.
In addition, the teacher briefly introduces the background of the text: Section 4 Expanding Our Horizons mainly discusses the influence of Confucius’ thoughts on modern society, including family, education, interpersonal relationships and social development, helping students have a preliminary understanding of the text framework.
Design Intention: Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning. Previewing core vocabularies before reading can help students reduce difficulties in understanding the text and improve reading efficiency. Group activities can stimulate students’ enthusiasm for participation, make them master vocabulary in practice, and cultivate their cooperative learning ability. The brief introduction of the text background can help students establish a clear learning goal and lay a foundation for in-depth reading.
While-reading: In-depth Analysis and Improving Reading Ability
This link is divided into three parts: fast reading, careful reading and intensive reading, which gradually guide students to understand the text in depth.
Fast Reading
The teacher asks students to read the text quickly and answer two questions: ① What is the main topic of the text? ② Which aspects of modern society are influenced by Confucius’ thoughts?
After students finish reading, the teacher invites several students to answer the questions, and then summarizes: The main topic of the text is the influence of Confucius’ thoughts on today’s society, and it mainly involves family, education, interpersonal relationships and social harmony. At the same time, the teacher guides students to sort out the structure of the text: the first paragraph introduces the status of Confucius and Confucianism, the middle paragraphs discuss the influence of Confucian thoughts on different aspects of modern society, and the last paragraph summarizes the contemporary value of Confucian thoughts.
Design Intention: Fast reading aims to train students’ ability to obtain key information quickly, help them grasp the main idea and structure of the text, and lay a foundation for careful reading. The teacher’s summary can help students sort out their thinking and form a systematic understanding of the text.
Careful Reading
The teacher asks students to read the text carefully and complete the following tasks:
Task 1: Fill in the blanks according to the text. The blanks involve key information such as the core thoughts of Confucius, the influence on family education, and the embodiment in social life. For example: “Confucius’ core thoughts include ________, ________, ________ and ________.” “In family education, Confucius advocated ________ and ________.”
Task 2: Judge true or false according to the text. The questions are designed around the details of the text, such as “Confucian thoughts have no influence on Western society. (F)” “The doctrine of the mean helps people maintain balance in life. (T)”
After students complete the tasks independently, the teacher checks the answers, explains the key and difficult points in the text, and emphasizes the key sentences, such as “Confucius’ thoughts have not only shaped Chinese culture but also had a profound impact on the world.” “Benevolence and propriety are still important moral standards in modern society.”
Design Intention: Careful reading focuses on training students’ ability to obtain detailed information, helping them deeply understand the specific content of the text and master the key points. Independent completion of tasks can cultivate students’ independent learning ability, and the teacher’s explanation can help students solve doubts and consolidate the key knowledge of the text.
Intensive Reading
The teacher guides students to read the key paragraphs of the text intensively, focusing on analyzing the sentence structure and the use of advanced vocabularies and phrases. For example, in the sentence “As one of the most influential thinkers in history, Confucius’ ideas have been passed down from generation to generation and continue to guide people’s behavior today,” the teacher analyzes the absolute construction “As one of the most influential thinkers in history” and the phrase “pass down from generation to generation.”
At the same time, the teacher asks guiding questions to stimulate students’ thinking: “Why can Confucius’ thoughts be passed down for thousands of years? What is the practical significance of these thoughts in modern society? Do you agree with all the views in the text? Why?”
Students are organized to discuss these questions in groups. Each group selects a recorder to record the group’s views, and then sends a representative to share the discussion results with the whole class. The teacher comments on the students’ views, guides them to think critically, and helps them understand the profound connotation of Confucius’ thoughts.
Design Intention: Intensive reading aims to improve students’ ability to analyze and understand complex sentences, master advanced language expressions, and lay a foundation for writing. Guiding questions and group discussions can stimulate students’ critical thinking, let them express their views freely, and cultivate their ability to analyze and solve problems. At the same time, it can deepen students’ understanding of the contemporary value of Confucian thoughts and enhance their cultural confidence.
Post-reading: Consolidation and Application
This link is divided into two parts: language consolidation and theme expansion, to help students consolidate the knowledge learned and apply it to practice.
Theme Expansion
The teacher organizes a theme discussion activity with the topic “How to inherit and promote Confucian thoughts in modern society?” First, the teacher gives some examples, such as carrying out Confucian culture courses in schools, promoting polite communication in daily life, and applying the thought of harmony in social management.
Then, students are divided into groups of 4-5 to discuss the topic. They need to put forward specific suggestions and explain the reasons. During the discussion, the teacher walks around to guide, helps students solve language expression problems, and encourages them to put forward innovative views. After the discussion, each group sends a representative to make a speech, and the teacher makes a summary and evaluation, emphasizing that we should inherit the essence of Confucian thoughts, discard the dross, and make Confucian thoughts better serve modern society.
In addition, the teacher introduces the influence of Confucian thoughts in the world, such as the establishment of Confucius Institutes around the world, and the spread of Confucian thoughts in Western countries, helping students understand the global influence of Confucian culture and enhance their cross-cultural communication awareness.
Design Intention: Theme expansion activities can help students connect the text with real life, deepen their understanding of the contemporary value of Confucian thoughts, and cultivate their ability to put forward their own views and solve practical problems. Introducing the global influence of Confucian thoughts can broaden students’ horizons, enhance their cultural confidence, and cultivate their cross-cultural communication awareness.
Summary and Homework
Summary
The teacher invites students to summarize what they have learned in this class, including core vocabularies, key sentences, the main content of the text, and the contemporary value of Confucius’ thoughts. Then the teacher makes a supplementary summary, emphasizing the key points of this class, and guiding students to realize that learning this section is not only to master English knowledge but also to understand and inherit Chinese excellent traditional culture, and to use English to spread Chinese culture.
Design Intention: Letting students summarize independently can help them sort out the knowledge learned, strengthen memory, and cultivate their ability to summarize and induce. The teacher’s supplementary summary can help students consolidate the key knowledge and clarify the learning significance of this class.
Homework
The teacher assigns three levels of homework to meet the needs of different students:
Level 1 (Basic): Review the core vocabularies and key sentences of this class, and recite the key paragraphs of the text. This is to help students consolidate the basic knowledge and ensure that all students master the key content of this class.

Level 3 (Expansion): Search for information about the influence of Confucian thoughts in Western countries, and prepare a 3-minute English speech to be shared in the next class. This is to broaden students’ horizons, cultivate their ability to collect and process information, and improve their oral expression ability.
Design Intention: Assigning hierarchical homework can take care of the differences of different students, let each student have a sense of achievement in learning, and at the same time, guide students to continue learning after class, expand their knowledge, and improve their comprehensive English ability.
