When I was six, a new family moved into the house next door. There was a girl, Frances, who was about my age. We became best friends soon. I was too young to notice what was really going on in her life, but my mother did.
Mom noticed that Frances never invited anyone into the rooms they lived in. Her mother went off to work very early in the morning and came back looking very tired. And her two older brothers wore dirty clothes and were never at home. Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small.
Mom never mentioned anything to me. But she once asked, “Would you mind if I give Frances some of your clothes?” I agreed. Frances seemed very thrilled.
Mom began to spend more time with Frances and me. She and I had always done kitchen jobs together, but now the three of us were making biscuits and washing up together. Frances was always willing to help, as long as Mom was there. Sometimes they would just sit together and talk while I was off doing something else.
That routine (常规事务) continued until we were both teenagers. But then her mother decided they were moving back to Ireland. We promised to write to each other.
One day, my mom called to say that a letter from Frances had arrived. “When I was four, my father died. My mother tried to make money. She ignored me. Your mom saved me. Without her love and attention, I would never have survived my childhood. I have used your mother’s example as my guide to care for people around me.”
My mother taught me many things, but this was her most valuable lesson. Watching her example and seeing the life-changing results were powerful. We will never know how or when our acts of kindness will influence others, but it’s always better to try.
4. What do we know about Frances’ family from Paragraph 2?
A. They were unhappy to come to a new place. B. They tried hard to avoid their neighbors.
C. They cared little about each other. D. They lived a very difficult life.
5. What does the underlined word “thrilled” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Proud. B. Annoyed. C. Excited. D. Confident.
6. What does the author try to show through the fourth paragraph?
A. Frances was a good helper. B. Frances was used to the routine.
C. Frances got on well with the author’s mom. D. Frances was good at doing kitchen jobs.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Teaching by example B. Lifelong friends
C. My mom’s life D. Being brave to try
D 5. C 6. C 7. A

根据第二段“Mom noticed that Frances never invited anyone into the rooms they lived in. Her mother went off to work very early in the morning and came back looking very tired. And her two older brothers wore dirty clothes and were never at home. Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small.(妈妈注意到弗朗西斯从不邀请任何人到他们住的房间。她妈妈一大早就去上班,回来时看起来很累。她的两个哥哥穿着脏衣服,从不在家。弗朗西斯总是饿,她的衣服常常太小。)”可知,弗朗西斯家生活艰难。故选D。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“Frances was always hungry, and her clothes were often too small.(弗朗西斯总是饿,她的衣服常常太小。)”和第三段“But she once asked, “Would you mind if I give Frances some of your clothes?” I agreed. Frances seemed very thrilled.(“但她有一次问:“你介意我给弗朗西斯一些你的衣服吗?”我同意了。弗朗西斯似乎非常_____。)”可知,弗朗西斯家生活艰难,衣服常常太小,作者的妈妈提出给她一些衣服,弗朗西斯应该很“兴奋”。由此可知,thrilled意为“兴奋的”。故选C。
【6题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“Mom began to spend more time with Frances and me. She and I had always done kitchen jobs together, but now the three of us were making biscuits and washing up together. A dragonfly barely an inch and a half long appears to be animal world’s most productive long distance traveler - flying thousands of miles over oceans as it migrates from continent to continent - according to a newly published research.
Biologists who led the study say the evidence is in the genes. They found that populations of this dragonfly, called Pantala flavescens, in Texas, eastern Canada, Japan, Korea, India, and South America, have genes so similar that there is only one likely explanation. Apparently — somehow — these insects are traveling distances that are extraordinarily long for their small size, breeding (繁殖) with each other, and creating a common worldwide gene pool.
But how do insects from different continents manage to meet and hook up? Ware says it appears to be the way their bodies have evolved. “These dragonflies have adaptations such as increased surface areas on their wings that enable them to use the wind to carry them.”
Dragonflies, in fact, have already been observed crossing the Indian Ocean from Asia to Africa. “They are following the weather,” says Daniel Troast, who analyzed the DNA samples in Ware’s lab. “They’re going from India where it’s dry season to Africa where it’s wet season, and apparently they do it once a year.”
Wetness is a must for Pantala to reproduce, and that, says Ware, is why these insects would be driven to even attempt such a dangerous trip, which she calls a “kind of suicide.” The species depends on it. While many will die on the route, as long as enough make it, the species survives.
For the moment, the details of this extraordinary insect travel are an educated best guess. Much more work is needed to bring many loose ends together. Ware and Troast hope that scientists can work on plotting those routes.
8. What proves Pantala flavescens are the world’s longest-distance flyers?
A. Scientists have tracked the dragonfly across the world.
B. There are many Pantala flavescens in various continents.
C. The same dragonfly was found both in Asia and America.
D. Pantala flavescens in different continents have similar genes.
9. What helps Pantala flavescens fly over so long distance?
A. Their special body shape.
B. Their ability to use wind.
C. Their small and light body.
D. Their large and strong wings.
10. What is necessary for Pantala flavescens to reproduce?
A. Damp weather. B. Enough sunshine.
C. Dry environment. D. Warm nests.
11. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. The weather. B. The insect.
C. The wind. D. The trip.
D 9. B 10. A 11. D

根据第二段内容“Biologists who led the study say the evidence is in the genes. They found that populations of this dragonfly, called Pantala flavescens, in Texas, eastern Canada, Japan, Korea, India, and South America, have genes so similar that there is only one likely explanation. Apparently — somehow — these insects are traveling distances that are extraordinarily long for their small size, breeding (繁殖) with each other, and creating a common worldwide gene pool.(领导这项研究的生物学家说基因就是证据。
根据第三段的“These dragonflies have adaptations such as increased surface areas on their wings that enable them to use the wind to carry them.(这些蜻蜓适应性强,比如翅膀上的表面积增加,使它们能够利用风来飞行。)可知,Pantala flavescens蜻蜓运用风的能力飞行有助于他们长距离飞行。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段首句“Wetness is a must for Pantala to reproduce,(潮湿是Pantala繁殖所必须条件)”可知这种蜻蜓的繁殖必须要湿润的气候。故选A。
根据第五段的“Wetness is a must for Pantala to reproduce, and that, says Ware, is why these insects would be driven to even attempt such a dangerous trip, which she calls a ‘’kind of suicide.’The species depends on it. While many will die on the route, as long as enough make it, the species survives.(潮湿是Pantala繁殖的必要条件,韦尔说,这就是为什么这些昆虫会被迫尝试如此危险的旅行,她称之为“一种自杀”。这个物种依赖于它。虽然许多人会在途中死亡,但只要足够多,该物种就能存活下来。 )”可知。对于这种昆虫来说这种危险的旅行,是自杀式的。虽然许多昆虫会死在途中,但这种物种依靠这种旅行来生存下来。分析内容可知,it指的是上文的长途旅行。故选D。
D
For all the talk of helicopter parents and their snowflake children, most parents I know are more concerned with whether their children’s development would be considered normal by experts than whether they are raising a prodigy (天才).
When the teen years arrive, the “Is it normal?” instinct can go into overdrive. Adolescence is marked by many changes, including ones that manifest(显示)physically and, their more challenging counterpart, ones that manifest emotionally. The moods and deep feelings are intense, and make many helicopter parents in a state of extreme panic.
But difficult feelings are often not a cause for concern, according to psychologist Lisa Damour in her new book, The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Raising Connected, Capable, and Compassionate Adolescents. Not only are sadness and worrying healthy and natural parts of being a teenager, but the ability to experience these feelings(without a parent panicking)and to learn how to cope with them is developmentally necessary.
There is a lot of commercial marketing around wellness that can give people the impression that they are only mentally healthy or their kids are mentally healthy if they are feeling good, calm or relaxed. This is not an accurate definition of mental health. Mental distress is not only inevitable—it is part of mental health and experiencing it is part of how kids grow and mature.
There are many other healthy ways kids regulate emotions besides talking. Listening to mood-matching music is a very adaptive way to regulate as the experience of listening to the music catalyzes the emotion out of them. Teenagers also discharge emotions physically—by going through a run, jumping on a trampoline or banging on drums. Sometimes they will discharge them through creative channels like drawing or making music.
As adults, we should not diminish the value of emotional expression that brings relief, even if it doesn’t come in the verbal form to which we are most accustomed. Don’t join in because what we ultimately want is for our teens to become autonomous in dealing with their hard feelings.
12. Why do many helicopter parents feel alarmed in their children’s adolescence?
A. They are eager to raise a genius.
B. They are concerned about their children’s safety.
C. They can’t accept children’s physical changes.
D. They are anxious about their children’s mental development.
13. What is a common misunderstanding of mental health?
A. It is all about good feelings.
B. It means having the ability to handle hardships.
C. It contributes to kids’ growing up.
D. It refers to a person’s positive qualities.
14. Why does the author discuss kids’ ways to manage emotions in Paragraph 5?
A. To confirm bad feelings are sure to be gone.
B. To encourage parents to give a helping hand.
C. To show kids can tackle hard feelings themselves.
D. To clarify the definition of mental health.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Helicopter Parents: You Can Be More Self- reliant.
B. Commercial Marketing: A Magical Trick
C. Snowflake Children: You Are Promising
D. Hard Feelings: A Sign of Teenagers Mental Health
D 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第二段中的“When the teen years arrive, the ‘Is it normal?’ instinct can go into overdrive. Adolescence is marked by many changes, including ones that manifest (显示) physically and, their more challenging counterpart, ones that manifest emotionally. The moods and deep feelings are intense, and make many helicopter parents in a state of extreme panic. (当青少年到来时,‘这正常吗?’的本能可能会超速。青春期的特点是许多变化,包括身体上的变化,以及更具挑战性的情感变化。这种情绪和深刻的感受是强烈的,使许多直升机父母处于极度恐慌的状态)”可推知,“直升机父母”会过分担心青春期的孩子是不是在健康发展,对于孩子身心的变化,父母产生焦虑、恐慌,其根本原因是担心孩子们的心理健康。故选D项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“There is a lot of commercial marketing around wellness that can give people the impression that they are only mentally healthy or their kids are mentally healthy if they are feeling good, calm or relaxed. This is not an accurate definition of mental health. (有很多关于健康的商业营销,可以给人们留下这样的印象:只有当他们感觉良好、平静或放松时,他们或他们的孩子才会精神健康。这不是对心理健康的准确定义)”可知,人们受商业营销的影响误以为只有孩子心情愉悦才是心理健康的标志。由此可知,对于心理健康的误解是,健康的心理都是关于心情愉悦的。故选A项。
根据第五段“There are many other healthy ways kids regulate emotions besides talking. Listening to mood-matching music is a very adaptive way to regulate as the experience of listening to the music catalyzes the emotion out of them. Teenagers also discharge emotions physically—by going through a run, jumping on a trampoline or banging on drums. Sometimes they will discharge them through creative channels like drawing or making music.(除了谈话,孩子们还有很多其他健康的方式来调节情绪。听符合情绪的音乐是一种适应性很强的调节方式,因为听音乐的经历会催化他们的情绪。青少年还会通过跑步、跳蹦床或敲鼓等方式来发泄情绪。有时他们会通过绘画或制作音乐等创造性渠道来释放这些情绪)”可知,孩子们有很多健康的方式来调节情绪,最后一段中的“As adults, we should not diminish the value of emotional expression that brings relief, even if it doesn’t come in the verbal form to which we are most accustomed. Don’t join in because what we ultimately want is for our teens to become autonomous in dealing with their hard feelings.
通读全文可知,尤其第三段“But difficult feelings are often not a cause for concern, according to psychologist Lisa Damour in her new book. The Emotional Lives of Teenagers: Raising Connected, Capable, and Compassionate Adolescents. Not only are sadness and worrying healthy and natural parts of being a teenager, but the ability to experience these feelings(without a parent panicking)and to learn how to cope with them is developmentally necessary. (但心理学家丽莎·达穆尔在她的新书《青少年的情感生活:培养有联系、有能力、有同情心的青少年》中说,困难的感觉通常不是担心的原因。悲伤和担忧不仅是青少年健康和自然的一部分,而且体验这些感觉(没有父母的恐慌)并学习如何应对它们的能力是发展所必需的)”可知,文章主要介绍了青少年身心健康的标志,以及“直升机父母”对孩子青春期焦虑的关注。故D项“Hard Feelings: A Sign of Teenagers Mental Health (艰难的感受:青少年心理健康的标志)”适合作本文标题。
Never Over-Study
When you spend too much time studying, you will quickly lose focus and the time spent in studying will become “junk time”. You think you’re studying but you’re just sitting there re-reading the same sentence about 100 times and you’re not getting anywhere. ___16___ Taking breaks will make you energetic again and refresh your mind. Besides, it will give your mind sometime to take in what you have been doing.
● Plan your plan.
___17___ They actually plan what they are going to do. They actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. If you want to be successful, do as successful people do. Set a plan, a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit. ___18___
● Front up to the toughest work first.
Many of us like to do the easy things first to build our confidence. That’s fair enough. The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and so if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy, your batteries will be low when it comes the time to deal with the hard part. So what happens then? ___19___ We all do it. We really shouldn’t, though. So develop the habit of giving your primary energy to the hard tasks and completing the easy stuff last.
● ___20___.
Do we really have to explain this? Just turn them off for an hour. We promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don’t text your friends, don’t chat while doing memory activities, don’t make phone calls, just focus on what you’re doing. Even if you focus on work for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting! You get that right?
A. Instead, take regular breaks.
B. You get tired and impatient and just give up.
C. Get off social networking sites and turn off the phone.
D. Top students don’t just randomly sit down and complete work.
E. Positive habits decide future success.
F. They make plans ahead.
G. Taking breaks can make you get everywhere.
A 17. D 18. E 19. B 20. C

,下文“They actually plan what they are going to do. They actually plan the time they will study and they set goals for what will be achieved. (他们确实会规划自己要做的事情。他们切实会规划学习时间,还会为要达成的目标设定计划。)”中they指代上文的群体,D选项“Top students don’t just randomly sit down and complete work.(优等生不会随意坐下来完成学习任务。)”
上文“Set a plan, a goal and stick to it, which will create a routine and a routine is the first step towards developing a habit.(制定计划与目标并坚持执行,这会形成固定规律,而规律是养成习惯的第一步。)”
上文“The only challenge with this approach is that you use up your primary energy at the start of any study period and so if you are dealing with the easy parts with your primary energy, your batteries will be low when it comes the time to deal with the hard part. So what happens then?(但这种方法唯一的问题是,在任何一段学习时间的开始,你都会耗尽自己的主要精力。因此,如果你用最佳精力去处理简单的部分,等到需要应对困难部分时,你的精力就会不足。那么接下来会发生什么呢?)”提出先做简单任务会导致精力耗尽,面对难题时陷入困境,询问后果,B选项“You get tired and impatient and just give up.(你会疲惫、不耐烦,最终放弃。)”
根据下文“Just turn them off for an hour. We promise the world will still be there when you log back in! Don’t text your friends, don’t chat while doing memory activities, don’t make phone calls, just focus on what you’re doing. Even if you focus on work for 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes of chatting, it’s better than 30 minutes of work while also chatting!(把它们关闭一小时就好。我们保证,当你重新登录时,一切都不会改变。不要给朋友发信息,不要在进行记忆类学习时聊天,不要打电话,专注于手头的事情。即便专注学习15分钟后再聊天5分钟,也比边聊天边学习 30 分钟效果更好!)”可知,本段核心建议是关闭社交工具、专注学习,提到关掉设备、不发短信聊天。C选项“Get off social networking sites and turn off the phone.(远离社交网站,关掉手机)”精准概括本段主旨,适合作为段落小标题。

故填is。

My family moved from Taiwan to a smalltown in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends. Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn’t help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.
And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to holdback my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn’t know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.
How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door.
(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box. Wearing a radiant smile, the man reached out his hands, passed the box to me and grinned “Christmas gift for you”. Shocked at the unexpected guest and gift, I was at a loss what to say. The moment he blended into the darkness, I untied the ribbon with heart thumping wildly. Inside the box lay a teddy bear I had longed for with an attached card. Once again, I couldn’t contain my tears.
Through tear-blurred eyes, I recognized the handwriting on the card. It was a friend of mine and I later discovered that the man was her father. She was one of the audience of my sad story. The card read: “Sorry, I’m late. Merry Christmas.” I wiped away tears, held the box tightly and felt a surge of warmth. Christmas memories of this year wouldn’t be a bitter joke. Instead, it was a miracle which witnessed a healed heart. So now I believe Santa is real. This Santa doesn’t come down our chimneys, but lives inside good and thoughtful people who really listen to friends, and then plan deliberate acts of kindness.

C

(1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Outside the door stood an old man with a white beard and a red cap, holding a well-packed box.
