Dancing helps people a lot, from improving brain health to creating community.
Dance Helps Your Brain
Helen, a scientist, did a study. She asked two groups of people in poor health to take part in programs for over six months. One group practiced dancing, and the other group did a traditional exercise like cycling. Both groups improved their level of physical health, but the dancers improved their “brain power”. This means they had a better memory, could pay more attention, and could think better. So, dancing can really help our brains work better.
Dance Helps You Accept Your Body
Jenny is a young girl. She can’t feel anything from her knees down. She joined a dance program not long ago. This changed her life. The dance program made her better at moving in a coordinated (协调的) way. It also helped her not be afraid of people judging (评价) her for how she moves. Jenny says, “I see a lot of people moving like me. I don’t need to be perfect in my dancing or worry about how I lift my leg. I feel good about how I am now.” Through dancing, Jenny learned to accept her body and feel more confident when she moves.
Dance Builds Community
Becky is a dance teacher. She has helped 300 communities in 28 countries learn to dance. In places like India and South Korea, people put their own special dance styles into the classes. Becky wants to make these groups of people feel like a family and part of a community. “Thank you for your email. I have left to run after my dream of knitting (钩编) sweaters for penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office...until my penguin friends are happy.” This is part of an email received by a Chinese student studying in the UK from her tutor (助教), which has recently gone viral (走红) online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The idea was started by the Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia.
The project began due to a serious oil spill (泄漏) near Phillip Island in the late 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins dropped greatly. When little penguins became covered in oil, they tried to clean themselves with their beaks (喙), but eating the oil could be deadly. The oil also damaged their feathers, making it difficult for them to swim or hunt for food.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked knitters worldwide to make sweaters for influenced penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process (过程) and stop them from eating the oil. The method has proven useful. In 2001, another oil spill happened near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the affected penguins were successfully saved.
However, some people have questioned the idea of animals wearing human-made clothing. Certain bird protection groups have raised concern that these sweaters may put more stress on the penguins’ bodies and it may be harmful to their health. In response, the foundation explained that the sweaters are only a short-term solution and will not be used once the penguins recover (康复).
To make sure the penguins are protected and wearing suitable clothes, the foundation has provided knitting instructions for knitters. For example, the total length of the finished sweater should be no more than 18 cm, the width across the body no more than 12 cm and the width of the bottom opening no more than 11 cm.
29. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By telling a joke. B. By describing an email.
C. By introducing a tutor. D. By using a famous saying.
30. Which of the blanks in the sentences below can the underlined “concern” in Paragraph 5 be put in?
A. They felt a sense of ________ after knowing the snacks and drinks were tested to be safe for kids.
B. The ________ of achieving her dream made all the hard work worth it and happiness filled her heart.
C. Villagers expressed ________ about the safety of local traffic and the terrible results it may cause.
D. The teacher has given the students ________ that the coming test will not be too difficult to pass.
31. Why was the project of knitting sweaters for penguins started?
A. To make penguins look cute.
B. To protect penguins from the cold.
C. To help penguins influenced by oil spills.
D. To raise understanding of climate change.
32. What does the Penguin Foundation say about the knitting project?
A. It will be a long-term solution.
B. It brings unexpected benefits.
C. It leads to a worldwide love of knitting.
D. It requires strict size guidelines.

①Today, we find ourselves in a digital (数字的) world of words, and the more we depend on technology, the less we use traditional writing devices (设备). Sometimes, when we pick up a pen, we perhaps stop a while trying to remember how to write a word. Then, it might remind us just how much we should value the charm (魅力) of Chinese handwriting. China has a rich history of handwriting art, especially Chinese calligraphy.
②For many Chinese, it won’t come as a surprise to learn that these Four Treasures of the Study, the brush, xuan paper, ink stick and ink stone, are included in the list of national intangible cultural heritage items (国家级非物质文化遗产) of China. Brushes are traditionally made from animal hair. With a history of over one thousand years, xuan paper plays a key role in Chinese calligraphy and painting. To use the ink, the ink stick is rubbed with water on an ink stone. This traditional way of producing liquid ink gives the calligrapher more control over his or her writing.
③The earliest known examples are called jiaguwen that dates back to the Shang Dynasty (1600-1046 BC). These picture-like characters slowly developed, and during the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC), people began to write xiaozhuan. During the Han Dynasty (202BC-220 AD), lishu began to be widely used. This started a new age and led to more popular forms, such as kaishu, caoshu and xingshu.
④There is an old saying that learning kaishu is like a baby learning to stand, with xingshu similar to walking, and caoshu to running. This means that one should first learn the basic skills well before starting the next level or like the English saying, “Learn to walk before you run.”
⑤Stories about the masters of calligraphy have been passed down from generation to generation. Known as the “Sage of Calligraphy”, Wang Xizhi (303-361 AD) could be said to be the heart and soul of Chinese calligraphy. Wang Xizhi started calligraphy at an early age. It is said that he practised calligraphy so much that the water in the pond near his house turned black with him washing his brushes in it day after day.
33. Why does the writer mention the digital world of words in the first paragraph?
A. To discuss a problem B. To give a solution
C. To explain a subject D. To tell a story
34. Which of the following words can best describe Wang Xizhi according to the passage?
A. Clever. B. Patient. C. Hard-working. D. Mysterious
35. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Xingshu learners should learn kaishu first.
B. People who cannot write correctly now are becoming stupid.
C. Kaishu, caoshu and xingshu are more popular than lishu in ancient times.
D. Nowadays the Four Treasures of the Study are of little value.
36. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Diana Nyad was a professional (职业的) swimmer in the USA who was once on the cover page of New York Times. She was young when she decided to swim around Manhattan. The first time she tried, she didn’t succeed. She tried again and swam twenty-eight miles (英里) in less than eight hours. In her twenties, she had another goal: to swim from Cuba to Florida, a distance of 110 miles. She even didn’t stop to sleep. But she didn’t finish because jellyfish attacked her, and the weather threw her off course. Did she try to swim from Cuba to Florida again? Yes, but not until thirty-three years later.
Diana retired (退役) from competitive swimming in her twenties. For the next thirty years, she didn’t swim at all. She became a sportscaster (体育比赛解说员) and a journalist. But she didn’t stop all physical activities. She always kept in shape. Every Friday she took a one-hundred-mile bike ride.
In 2011, when Diana was sixty years old, her mother died. She started to think about the meaning of her own life. In the thirty years when she didn’t swim, she always thought about the possibility of trying again. She didn’t want to die without achieving her goal. She started to train again. In the summer of 2013, she tried again—and failed again—after twenty-nine hours in the water. What kinds of problems did she face? There were attacks by jellyfish, bad weather, and breathing problems from asthma (哮喘). How did she solve the problem of jellyfish? For her fifth attempt, she wore a bodysuit and mask to protect against jellyfish stings. On August 31, 2013, after fifty-three hours of swimming, she reached the Florida shore, thirty-five years after her first try in her twenties.

“Green Travel in Our City”
Dear fellow students,
Have you noticed cleaner air in our city recently? With Chongqing’s new subway lines and bike lanes, green
travel is becoming easier than ever.
Many people still choose to drive private cars every day, which leads to heavy traffic jams and serious air
pollution. In contrast, green travel like taking subways or riding shared bikes is environmentally friendly and
helps us move faster. Last weekend, instead of asking my parents for a ride, I rode a shared bike to the bookstore
along the new bike lanes. It was so relaxing to enjoy the fresh air and avoid crowded roads.
I suggest we have a weekly “Car-Free Day”. On that day, we can choose public transport or bikes instead of
driving. Let’s start small to make our city greener!
