For more than 20 years, my coworkers and I have taken students from the University of Texas at Austin to Europe as the highlight of half-year-long study of World War II. There’s nothing like being there to discover what happened there 77 years ago or how much it can teach us today. We board a bus and enter the American cemetery (墓地). A staff member greets us and tells us about the 9,380 graveyards here. We turn to face the cemetery as the national anthem (国歌) plays over the loudspeaker. Tears well up in my eyes at the memory of my father, who flew for 30 missions over France and Germany in the spring and summer of 1944. Each student receives a yellow rose to place at the grave of a Texan soldier. The headstones give us only the name, rank, unit, home state and date of death. We can guess how old they were, for the students are about the same age. We return to the beach and look at the peaceful scene that we know was anything but peaceful 77 years ago. “Bloody Omaha” was the deadliest beach of the landings. More than 2,400 Americans were killed or wounded, or went missing in action. No one who survived ever forgot it. Our students understand the sacrifices made that day and the cost of war, both humans and materials. They face a world different from the one their grandfathers and great-grandfathers lived in but just as complex and even more dangerous. Pandemics, pollution and the threat of climate change present challenges that no previous generation has faced. I have faith in this young generation. We can learn much from the D-Day landings and World War II about the importance of alliances (联盟), the value of cooperation and the meaning of courage. As it turns out, learning from the past is a matter of moment today. 41. What did the author do on the eve of the 77th anniversary of the D-Day landings? A. She gave a course on World War II. B. She went to Europe with old soldiers. C. She visited the American cemetery in Texas. D. She took students on a study tour to Omaha Beach. 42. What can we know about the author’s father? A. He was a Texan soldier. B. He was buried in this graveyard. C. He died when performing a mission. D. He served in the air force during World War II. 43. Pressure to learn people’s names only adds to the stress. A new facial-recognition app could come to the rescue, but privacy experts recommend proceeding with caution. The app, called SocialRecall, connects names with faces via smart phone cameras and facial recognition, potentially avoiding the need for formal introductions. “It breaks down these social barriers we all have when meeting somebody,” says Barry Sandrew, who created the app and tested it at an event attended by about 1,000 people. After receiving an invitation to download SocialRecall from an event organizer, the user is asked to take two selfies and sign in via social media. At the event, the app is active within a previously defined geographical area. When a user points his or her phone camera at an attendee’s face, the app identifies the individual, displays the person’s name, and links to his or her social media profile. To protect privacy, it recognizes only those who have agreed to participate. And the app’s creators say it automatically deletes users’ data after an event. Ann Cavoukian, a privacy expert who runs the Privacy by Design Center of Excellence praises the app’s creators for these protective measures. She cautions, however, that when people choose to share their personal information with the app, they should know that “there may be unintended consequences down the road with that information being used in another context that might come back to bite you.” The start-up has also developed a version of the app for individuals who suffer from prosopagnosia, or “face blindness”, a condition that prevents people from recognizing individuals they have met. To use this app, a person first acquires an image of someone’s face from either the smartphone’s camera or a photograph, and then tags it with a name. When the camera spots that same face in real life, the previously entered information is displayed. The collected data are stored only on a user’s phone, according to the team behind the app. 46. According to the passage, what is the main purpose of SocialRecall? A. To provide a tool for social media marketing. B. To help people remember names and faces in social settings. C. To collect and store personal information for future use. D. To assist event organizers in managing attendance. 47. Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________. A. giving names to the photos kept in their smartphones B. collecting information previously entered in the phone C. providing the information of a person when they first meet D. showing the person’s information when it spots a stored face 49. What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage? A. It may put people’s privacy at risk. B. It has caused unintended consequences. C. It can prevent some communication disorders. D. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow. The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice. You cannot be successful without first developing your self-esteem. Your level of self-esteem is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-esteem are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are the perennial (长期的) victims and martyrs. They are leaves tossed (摇摆) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather. You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible. Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence. If you associate with positive-thinking people, you are definitely going to achieve success. On the contrary, the opposite happens. We are responsible for finding, planting, and nurturing the seeds that contain future victory, born from setbacks. In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success. 51. Why are people with low self-esteem compared to leaves? A. Because they are ready to change their minds. B. Because they are easily affected by windy weather. C. Because they don’t have the power to face their fate. D. Because they can’t exercise control over themselves. 52. What would losers think? A. Success is the result of hard work. B. Working hard will lead to success. C. Their failure is only because of bad luck. D. They don’t make efforts to succeed. 53. What can be inferred from paragraph 5? A. Whether we will succeed depends on our attitudes. B. One’s expectation is the key to future success. C. Thoughts and beliefs are the result of creative mind. D. Setting our expectations is essential before taking action. 54. What’s the function of the last paragraph? A. The proof of the author’s points. B. The conclusion of the argument. C. An introduction to another topic. D. A comparison between two views. 55. Which is the best title for the text? A. The secrets of success B. Success is a choice C. Develop our confidence D. How to achieve success 【答案】51. D 52. C 53. A 54. B 55. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.(总之,在你生活的所有领域,无论是财务、身体、情感还是精神方面,你都要承担责任。 通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.(成功是一种选择,而不是偶然。你生来就是赢家。你生来就很富有。只要你做出正确的选择,你就能够成功。)”以及尾段中的“In short, in all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, emotional, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it, you are on the road to success.(简而言之,在你生活的所有领域,无论是财务、身体、情感还是精神方面,你都要承担责任。 Did you ever wonder where Legos come from? A box? A toy store? A factory? Yes. But where did they first come from? Who invented them? What was that person’s story? When you learn about the Lego story, you will be surprised! Like many great inventions, the story is not just one of the great ideas, but of a ton of hard work, perseverance (坚持) and courage. The story starts off in Denmark. Ole Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter who was struggling with his business. Then, his wife, the mother of his 4 boys, died. This was very hard for everyone. He was looking for new ways to make money and to make his kids happy. So, he started making wooden toys. They were of great quality. His 4 sons helped him with his business and, soon, word spread and big orders started coming in. But then the toys did not sell very well. He decided his toys needed a new name. He chose the name “Lego”, which in Danish means “play well”. Then, a few years later, his workshop was burned to the ground. Everything was destroyed. Ole almost gave up. But he decided it was very important to support his employees and kids. Not long after, he started to make a few plastic toys. He then got the idea to create a ‘system’ of toys that would build kids’ imagination and creativity. He built a village to test the idea. And the idea caught on quickly! Soon sales were pouring in. Then he figured out how to connect the pieces to each other. Soon he decided to stop making wooden toys and focus only on the connected plastic toys. Then they started to build more and more kinds of models. Each one had to be of the highest quality. Lego’s motto is “only the best is good enough”. B On the eve of the 77th anniversary of the D-Day landings, I found myself on Omaha Beach, leading a small band of college students into the past. 43. Why is the number of Americans mentioned in paragraph 5? A. To explain their love for traveling. B. To show their sacrifices in the mission. C. To honor them for fighting for the country. D. To praise them for bringing the beach into peace. 44. What can we learn from the passage? A. Few Americans died on Omaha Beach. B. The students are much older than the soldiers who died there. C. The author believes the young generation is promising. D. The world now is simpler and safer than before. 45. What is the main idea of the passage? A. The author introduces how D-Day landings happened 77 years ago. B. The author takes students to Omaha Beach and the American cemetery to learn from history. C. The students show great respect for the dead soldiers by placing yellow roses. D. The world today is facing more serious challenges than before. C Large gatherings such as weddings and conferences can be socially overwhelming. What can we learn about SocialRecall from the passage? A. It may put people’s privacy at risk. B. It has caused unintended consequences. C. It can prevent some communication disorders. D. It is praised by users for its protective measures. 50. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. The Future of Facial Recognition Technology B. SocialRecall: A New App for Face and Name Recognition C. Privacy Concerns in the Age of Facial Recognition D. How Technology Is Changing Social Interactions D From now on, never spend your precious time thinking of reasons for your failures and shortcomings. How to achieve success Ⅱ卷(共35分) 第四部分:(共2小节;满分35分) 第一节:阅读表达(满分10分) 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 Did you ever wonder where Legos come from?
