Teaching and learning important points: 1) Reading comprehension of the text and knowing about the amazing animals in Australia; 2) Learning about the usage of the new language items in the text. Teaching and learning difficult points: 1) Reading comprehension of the text and knowing about the amazing animals in Australia; 2) Learning about the usage of the new language items in the text. Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Leading in Activity 1 Leading in 1. Introduce the learning objectives of this period. 2. Watch a short video about the amazing animals in Australia to arouse the students’ interest. Step 2 Reading comprehension Activity 2 Reading comprehension 1. Read the subheadings and the first sentence to find out what is special about each animal/ what makes each animal special? And then talk about why the writer uses questions in the subheadings and predict the main content of each part. Answers: Kangaroo: a symbol of the country. Koala: cute but sensitive. Tasmanian devil: a little cute creature. Duck-billed platypus: It lays eggs like a bird and few people know about the animal. 2. Read the text and then answer the questions. 1) When do baby kangaroos begin to spend less time with their mothers? After they are about seven or eight months old and when they begin to jump. 2) Why shouldn’t you try to pet a wild kangaroo? They can hit and kick very hard. 3) What do koalas spend most of their time doing? They spend quite a lot of time eating, sleeping, and hanging onto tree trunks. 4) Why has the government made it against the law to handle koalas? Interaction with humans can cause them a lot of stress. 5) What two things about Tasmanian devils can bother people most? The noise they make could wake the dead and they have a terrible smell. 6) What do Tasmanian devils like to eat? Their diet is mostly dead animals. 7) What makes the way duck-billed platypuses give birth so different from the other mammals? It lays eggs in a nest like a bird. 8) What is the unique way used by duck-billed platypuses to find food? It finds food in the water by using electrical sensors in its bill. Step 3 Language Focus Activity 3 Learning about the new language items Learn about the following new language items. 1.
