A.too; that B.so; that C.such; that D.enough; to
【答案】B
【详解】句意:这个房间太吵了,以至于我什么都听不见。
“too; that”本身不存在该搭配,排除;“so…that…”意为“如此……以至于……”,结构为“so +形容词/副词+ that从句”,that引导结果状语从句,本题中noisy是形容词,后半句为结果状语从句,符合;“such…that…”同样表示“如此……以至于……”,但结构为“such +(a/an+形容词)+名词+ that从句”,空格后为形容词,排除;“enough…to…”中to是不定式符号,后需接动词原形,不能接从句。

I work as a waiter in a cafe. I spend the morning hours with coffee and seeing the friendly customers (顾客) every day. But there are always those mornings when a few unwanted customers come in. They often ask for coffee without looking at me directly. Some customers are discourteous and they think that customers are always right.
Just like me, Austin Simms of Cups Coffee and Tea has had enough of this. To help some customers with their manners, he puts a sign outside, showing his new way of setting prices.
His new sign shows the cost of a coffee is $5. If a customer walks up to the waiter and simply says, “Small coffee”, he or she will need to pay $5 for that small coffee. The price of “Small coffee, please” goes down to $3. In other words, a nice word “please” with a request for a small coffee will cut the price by $2. The coffee only costs $1.75 if the customer says, “Hello. One small coffee, please.” So you can see that customers who show the best manners get the largest discounts (折扣).
This new way has made some customers rethink their manners. We can be sure that at least some customers have become polite even though they do it just to get discounted coffee. The more you do something, the more you will get used to it. This way can actually (实际上) help some customers be polite.
29.What does the underlined word “discourteous” mean?
A.Worried. B.Impolite. C.Rich. D.Busy.
30.Which of the following decides the price of coffee according to Austin’s way?
A.Customers’ hope for the waiter.
B.The size of coffee customers ask for.
C.Customers’ ideas of the waiter’s work.
D.The ways that customers talk to the waiter.
31.What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A.The writer supports Austin’s way.
B.Some customers are more polite than others.
C.It’s impossible for impolite customers to learn manners.
D.The new way is the best way to help customers be polite.
【答案】29.B 30.D 31.A
【导语】本文讲述了咖啡馆老板Austin通过“根据顾客的礼貌程度定价”的方式,引导顾客注意礼仪,礼貌用语的顾客能享受咖啡折扣,这一做法让部分顾客变得更礼貌。
29.词句猜测题。根据前文“they often ask for coffee without looking at me directly”及后文“they think that customers are always right”,可推知“discourteous”意为“无礼的”,对应“Impolite”。故选B。

In the 13th century, a famous traveler named Marco Polo wrote a book called The Travels of Marco Polo. In this book, he talked about his adventures in China and the things he saw there. One interesting thing Marco Polo mentioned was how he translated (翻译) the Chinese word “long”. He thought it meant “dragon”. But was that a good translation?
The Chinese dragon and the Western dragon are both animals in mythology (神话). They are similar in some ways. For example, they both have scales and big claws. But they also have lots of differences.
The Chinese dragon is made up of parts of some animals, such as a rabbit’s eyes and an ox’s ears. The dragon is often painted gold. In Chinese mythology, the dragon can fly. It can also spray water from its mouth to create rain.
The Western dragon, on the other hand, has the body of a snake and the big wings of a bat. The dragon stands for evil (邪恶) and is always beaten by heroes. It breathes fire and is mostly painted in dark colors.
Does “dragon” match the cultural meaning of “long” in China? I don’t think so. This has to do with the cultural differences between China and the West. In Chinese Confucian ideas, kindness and harmony are very important. Western culture, however, prefers individual heroism (个人英雄主义). Whoever beats the bad dragon is called a hero.
In recent years, Chinese people have tried to translate “long” in other ways. Zhejiang’s Loong Air, for example, writes “long” as “Loong”. No matter how “long” is translated, one thing is for sure: The Chinese dragon is a positive symbol. Wish you the best of luck in the Year of the Dragon!
32.How does the writer lead into the topic (引入话题)?
A.By listing numbers. B.By using an old saying.
C.By asking a question. D.By giving an example.
33.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The Chinese dragon is a real animal but the Western dragon is not.
B.The Chinese dragon and the Western dragon are different in looks.
C.The Chinese dragon and the Western dragon can do the same things.
D.The Chinese people and the Western people have the same ideas about their dragon.
34.What does the underlined word “positive” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Good. B.Interesting. C.Useful. D.Easy.
35.Why does the writer write this passage?
A.To help people know better about the Chinese dragon.
B.To celebrate the Year of the Dragon in Chinese culture.
C.To show the differences between the Chinese dragon and the Western dragon.
D.To discuss cultural differences in translating the Chinese character “long” as “dragon”.

He thought it meant ‘dragon’.”可知,文章开头通过马可·波罗翻译“long”为“dragon”的故事(具体事例),引出了全文对中国“龙”与西方“dragon”差异的讨论,因此是“通过举例”引入话题。故选D。
33.细节理解题。根据“This has to do with the cultural differences between China and the West. In Chinese Confucian ideas, kindness and harmony are very important. Western culture, however, prefers individual heroism (个人英雄主义). Whoever beats the bad dragon is called a hero.”可知,文中明确提到中西方龙在外形和文化意义上都有所不同。故选B。
34.词句猜测题。根据“No matter how ‘long’ is translated, one thing is for sure: The Chinese dragon is a positive symbol. Wish you the best of luck in the Year of the Dragon!”可猜知,positive与good“好的”意思相同。故选A。

How quickly can you count from one to ten? Do you use ten different words to do it? Can you do it in English, or do you have to use your first language? Do you count on your fingers? Many people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true.
People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people begin counting with their first finger. They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten. In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way, a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand.
Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. Some languages have only a few words for numbers, and others have no words for numbers. For example, the aboriginal (土著居民), people in Australia don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even have words for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers. Similarly, people of the Piraha tribe (部落) in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as “one” or “three”. They are not able to say “five trees” or “ten trees” but can say “some trees”, “more trees” or “many trees”. Professor Edward Gibson from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said that most people believe that everyone knows how to count. “But here is a group that does not count. They could learn, but it’s not useful in their culture, so they’ve never picked it up.”
36.Why does the writer list the four questions at the beginning of the passage?
A.To make a survey. B.To interest the readers. C.To give examples. D.To interview the readers.
37.What can we learn according to paragraph 2?
A.People from China can make use of different finger positions to do the counting.

A.people all over the world know how to count
B.people of the tribe have words for number
C.some groups of people are not smart enough to count

Hand gestures mean different things in different countries. Some gestures may even get you in trouble in foreign countries if you don’t know them well. So maybe it is best to keep your hands in your pockets when travelling.
People in most countries such as Canada and the USA use a thumbs-up (翘拇指) to agree about something. But it may be unfriendly in some countries and shouldn’t be used at all in Iran, Iraq and Thailand.
What does making a circle with your thumb and index finger (食指) mean? In many countries, it means OK. That is not the only meaning, it usually means “zero” rather than OK in Australia. And in Japan, it usually means money.
Don’t try to call someone to you by using this gesture of your index finger. It may mean “come here” in the USA.But it is an unfriendly hand gesture in most parts of the world. There are places where this could even get you in trouble!
You have to worry about the “V” for winning sign. If you use it, you should keep your palm (手掌) facing away from you. If you turn your palm towards you.

C

B.People from the US usually begin counting with their thumb.
C.People from China count much faster than people from the US.
D.People from the US use only one hand to count from one to ten.
38.Which of the following is TRUE about aboriginal Australians?
A.There are ideas of numbers in their life.
B.There is no “some trees” in their language.
C.They have only a few words for numbers.
D.They have hand movements to stand for numbers.
39.The study of the Piranha tribe shows that ________.
A.people all over the world know how to count
B.people of the tribe have words for number
C.some groups of people are not smart enough to count
D.counting is not useful in the culture of the tribe
40.What is the main idea of the passage?
