Last year, I tried out for the school math competition team. I had prepared for weeks, solving hundreds of problems. I was confident that I would get in. But when the results came out, my name was not there.
I felt crushed. I thought, “I’m just not smart enough.” For a whole week, I refused to look at any math problem. I even avoided talking to my math teacher.
Then one day, my best friend Chen Wei showed me his own notebook. He had also failed the tryout. But instead of giving up, he had written down every mistake he made and corrected them with different colors. “Mistakes are not the end,” he said. “They are clues to what we need to learn.”
His words woke me up. I asked my teacher to go over my test paper with me. She pointed out that I was weak in geometry and often rushed through word problems. So I made a plan: practice geometry for 20 minutes every day, and always read word problems twice.
Three months later, I tried out again. This time, I made the team. But more importantly, I learned that failure is not a reflection of who I am—it is a stepping stone to who I can become.
29.How did the writer feel after failing the first tryout?
A.He wanted to study harder immediately.
B.He felt hopeless and avoided math.
C.He asked his teacher for help right away.
D.He decided to join another club.
30.What did the writer do to improve before the second tryout?
A.He only solved easy problems.
B.He practiced geometry daily and read word problems twice.
C.He asked his friend to take the test for him.
D.He stopped doing math completely.
31.What does the writer mean by “failure is a stepping stone to who I can become”?
A.Failure means you will never succeed.
B.Failure is something to be hidden from others.
C.Only successful people never fail.
D.Failure is a necessary part of growth and improvement.

In winter, lakes and rivers in cold areas often freeze over. Thick ice forms on the surface and the water may look completely frozen. In some very cold regions, animals such as seals, penguins and many sea birds live near icy waters and feed on fish. Yet fish and many other water animals can still survive under the ice all winter long. How do they manage to live in such icy water?
One reason is that only the top layer of water freezes. When the air temperature drops below 0°C, the surface water cools first and turns into ice. The water below the ice, however, remains liquid and still contains oxygen. Because of this, fish can breathe and move normally under the frozen surface.
But why doesn’t the whole lake freeze like a giant ice cube? The answer lies in the unusual behavior of water. When the surface water cools to about 4℃, it becomes denser (密度大的) than warmer water (for example, water around 6℃) and sinks to the bottom of the lake. As this happens, warmer water from below rises to the surface and cools again. Through this continuous process, the surface water eventually freezes while the deeper water remains around 4℃.
The ice on the surface also plays an important role. It acts like a blanket and reduces the loss of heat from the water below. This helps keep the lower water from becoming too cold for fish to live in.
Some fish living in very cold seas even produce a kind of antifreeze substance (防冻物质) that prevents their body from freezing. With the help of nature and their own abilities, fish are able to survive the long winter under the ice.
36.What surprising fact is mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.Birds catch fish in winter. B.Ice forms mainly in polar seas.
C.Rivers freeze earlier than lakes. D.Fish can still live under frozen lakes.
37.Why can fish breathe under ice?
A.Ice provides fresh air for fish. B.Air can pass easily through ice.
C.Water under ice still has oxygen. D.Fish come to the surface for fresh air.
38.What happens to water when it cools to about 4℃?
A.The water becomes lighter. B.The water stays on the surface.
C.The water turns into ice quickly. D.The water moves down to the bottom.
39.How does the ice cover help fish live in winter?
A.It stops the water from moving too fast. B.It produces antifreeze substance for fish.
C.It slows down heat loss from the water below. D.It keeps the water temperature above freezing.
40.In which part of a website can we probably read this article?
A.Animal Care Tips B.Science and Nature
C.Daily Weather Report D.Travel around the World

Little by little, I became confident and even won first prize in the school English speech contest.
From her, I learned that courage comes from practice and kindness can light up others’ life. I will keep this in mind forever.

C.Only successful people never fail.
D.Failure is a necessary part of growth and improvement.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is used to help college students in Shaanxi province ease anxiety (缓解焦虑) and sadness.
At Shaanxi University of Chinese Medicine, students are encouraged to sleep before 11 p.m. and take a short nap between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. This helps their bodies rest well and stop worries from staying up late to study. In their free time, students are also being encouraged to practice qigong, eat seasonal healthy food, and take part in mindfulness activities and music therapy (治疗).
“Body and mind are interdependent and must be cared for together,” said Tong Yajing, an associate professor at the university. “Regular meals and sleep are the key to staying healthy, and strong bodies help students face stress easily.”
Two students shared their stories. One student named Xiao Si used to be in low spirits and often skipped meals. But with TCM, she learned to care more about her body and felt much better.
