Finally I got so tired of practising that I didn’t care about doing it right. “Are you giving up on playing, Steve?” Angie asked. “Yes, I am,” I shouted. Angie sent me inside the music room where I cried out. Then she came in and told me never to give up. She left me alone and I realised Angie was right—by giving up, I was also giving up on the team and myself. With her comfort, I decided to go on practising. However, I still couldn’t play well. Knowing my difficulties, my teammates gave me a hand. Thanks to their support and help, I began to keep pace with them. Later, we performed wonderfully in an important show. Thanks to his teacher’s guidance, he learnt a lot. He often made tea for his teacher. He also took care of his fellow students’ health using his knowledge of tea and herbs. Lu Yu often went to the countryside to gather tea leaves and herbs. On one of those trips, Lu Yu found a spring (泉). The water was quite clear and clean. When Lu made tea with this spring water, he found the tea tasted better than usual. From then on, he realised the importance of water quality in making tea. In 752 AD, Lu Yu finished his studies and returned to Jingling, where he met Cui Guofu. Both men shared the same interests in tea, literature and poetry. They soon became good friends. Since then, the two spent much time travelling, drinking tea and writing poems together. This period was important to Lu Yu as a man of literature. D Imagine this: when you sit down and begin to eat a tasty tomato, suddenly it starts to cry! While this thing will never really happen, a new study shows that plants can make sounds when they are stressed. Researchers did a study, using ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes. Three groups of plants were listened to: One group wasn’t watered for five days, the second group had the stems (茎) cut off, and the third group was untouched. It turned out that the first two groups made sounds 30 to 50 times per hour, while the untouched group only made the sound once per hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Hadany from the team said. The researchers don’t know how the sounds are made, but they believe the noise comes from the breaking of air bubbles in the plants. This means the noise produced by the plants is not on purpose. Animals and insects may benefit from the sound. For example, the sound can tell a butterfly that the plant is under stress and not a good place to lay eggs. An animal that wants to eat a plant could also use the sounds to make decisions, according to Science Focus. After the experiment, the researchers listened to other plants such as rice, corn and grapes, and found they also made more sounds when stressed. Researchers said the study can help farmers in the future, as they can better take care of farms by “hearing” how plants feel. 1. Researchers found that__________ according to the text. A. plants often felt stressed B. some plants could cry C. plants could make sounds when stressed D. plants could communicate with each other 1. How can animals and insects benefit from the sound of plants? A. To find enough food. B. To break the air bubbles. C. To listen to other plants. D. To make right decisions. 1. What may the study help farmers do in the future? A. Improve the growth of plants. B. Protect the environment. C. Tell the weather. D. Decide what to plant. 1. What’s the main idea of the text? A. Tasty plants cry when stressed. B. Plants can make sounds under stress. C. Researchers listen to plants. D. Animals benefit from sounds. 第二节 阅读短文,从选项内所给的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余的选项。 Nature is full of great ideas. 17.__________ Many blind people use canes (拐杖) to move around. It happens because there is movement in the earth’s crust (地壳). Earthquakes usually come without warning. What should you do if this happens to you? Though the earthquake is dangerous, there are things you can do to protect yourself. If you are inside when the earthquake starts, stay calm and get under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect yourself from falling objects. Do not stand near walls or windows and stay out of the kitchen. The kitchen is dangerous because there are so many glass objects. Also, never get into a lift during an earthquake. If you are outside, stay calm and get to an open area as fast as you can. Stay away from buildings and trees. If you are in a car, drive to a place without trees or tall buildings. If you are close to the sea, try to get as far away from the sea as possible. Earthquakes can cause huge waves that can really hurt the people nearby. When the earthquake is over, there is still plenty of danger. If you see a fire, quickly move outdoors to an open area. If you have a phone, use it only once to call your family or a friend. Too many calls will bring down the phone system. Your chances of survival in an earthquake go up if you stay calm. Staying calm is difficult, but it can save your life. 1.
