(25-26·北京西城·期末)
For Sam, his smartphone was his lifeline, his fun, and his way to avoid socializing. His father often said, “Sam, look up! The real world is happening right in front of you!” But Sam just stayed silent, eyes glued to the 1 .
Then, an accident happened. One rainy afternoon, rushing for the bus, he lost his balance. His phone flew from his hand and 2 screen-down on the ground. The screen was a spiderweb of cracks and completely dead. Sam felt disconnected and lost.
The first evening was terrible. He picked up a book but couldn’t 3 . He thought about his phone every two minutes. The next day at school was worse. At lunch, while his friends laughed over a popular video, he just sat there, unable to join in. He had no choice but to…listen.
And an amazing thing happened. He 4 heard the conversations. He heard his friend Mark saying he was scared of failing the math test. Sam realized he felt the exact same way and, for the first time, said, “Yeah, me too. Maybe we can study together?” He heard Sarah talking softly about her sick dog, and he offered a real, heartfelt “I’m so sorry,” instead of just sending a sad emoji () later.
On the bus ride home, with no screen to hide behind, he looked out of the window. He noticed an elderly man, Mr. Jenkins from his street, having trouble with two heavy bags in the rain. Without thinking, Sam got off at the next stop and came back to 5 him. Mr. Jenkins felt very thankful and invited him in for a cup of hot chocolate. His apartment was full of model airplanes and old maps. For an hour, Sam was attracted by stories of Mr. Jenkins’ youth as a navigator (领航员). It was better than any movie.
As the week went on, Sam started doodling (涂鸦) in an old notebook, something he hadn’t done for years. He showed his drawings to his dad, who, surprised and excited, dug out his own designs of buildings from college. They spent a whole evening 6 their art, talking and laughing more than they had in years.
When his repaired phone finally arrived, Sam held it with 7 feelings. He turned it on. Many messages flooded in, but the urgency (紧迫性) was gone. “How does anyone know how to begin?” Marites wondered, 26 rising. She was afraid that she could not make it at all.
“Class, I can’t wait to see what you are going to share about yourself,” Ms. Carter said cheerfully. “You may show some of your favorite things.” She walked around, amazed at students’ work. “Ana, is that a spotlight on a stage? Do you love acting?” she asked. Then, to Daniel, “Big headphones! What music do you like?”
Marites felt a knot in her stomach as Ms. Carter stopped and looked over her shoulder. It was her blank piece of paper that seemed in a spotlight now.
“Marites, you seem 27 .”

I started working at a new company. A reorganization was happening right as I got there, and tensions (紧张) were high. I decided to do something about it.
I 49 out little paper ponds (池塘) from blue paper I found in the copy room. I made eighteen of these ponds with little paper lily pads (睡莲浮叶) and reed grass, waited for everyone to go home, and dropped them around the office.
And then I 50 180 tiny multicolored plastic ducks all over the office—in the paper ponds, in the break rooms, on the copiers. I came into work the next day like nothing had happened, and watched everyone slowly become aware that they were completely surrounded (包围) by tiny ducks. Over the next few weeks, the ducks moved from the ponds to people’s desks. Many people started 52 color sets and arranging their ducks in a pattern (图案). A few of the empty ponds were relocated to people’s desks to 53 their duck families. One coworker told me she had a duck to stand for each of her family members. Another came to me looking for a red duck because it was the only 54 they were missing from their lineup. People from other buildings started coming over to ours to see the ponds and take a duck.
