Cultural fairs offer a firsthand experience of traditions, art forms, and culinary(
delights from various communities.I remember attending a cultural fair last year.As I
walked through the fair,I was enveloped by the smell of spices from food stalls. One
particular stand caught my attention, where a woman was preparing paella,a traditional
Spanish dish.As she cooked, she shared with me how this recipe had been passed down
through generations, and that her grandmother would make it for family celebrations.
Watching her prepare the paella,I realized how food can tell the story of a culture.
At the same fair,I found myself drawn to a booth displaying colorful paintings. One of
the artists,a local woman named Elena, had created a series of landscapes describing the
rolling hills of our region. As we spoke,Elena recalled,as a young girl, how she would go
on weekend hikes with her family,so she would make a quick drawing of what she saw.It

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 found that as many as 41%0 of
employers were planning on downsizing their workforce due to Al.While that statistic may
be concerning,it doesn't necessarily mean that there's an approaching employment crisis,
according to Till Leopold, the lead author of the report.
Rather,Leopold thinks that it's an issue of skill upgrading. The report found that 77%
of employers were looking at teaching their current workforce to better work alongside AI,
while 47%were looking at transitioning employees from declining roles into other roles in
the organization.
"The key point is not that we might not have enough jobs,"Leopold says."The issue is
that jobs may look much different."The jobs most likely to be affected are largely white-
collar jobs like clerical(work that involves using various processes, such as typing
and voice recording, for inputting data into computers, which is in line with what has been
found in previous editions of the report.New additions include accounting and graphic design
jobs,as generative AI models have improved capabilities for both.
Other recent reports support the World Economic Forum's findings.A survey of chief
financial officers conducted by Duke University found 37%of respondents had used AI to
complete tasks previously done by employees.54%were planning on doing so over the next
year, including 76%of large firms."However,in the short run, this will be more about
plugging some holes and possibly not hiring someone they would have planned to hirebut
not dismissing someone"said John Graham, the academic director of the survey.
A new study paints a more sobering picture. It said banks could cut up to 200,000 jobsin
the next five years due to Al.But despite the findings of the study, author Tomasz Noetzel
agreed with Leopold and Graham.Job nvoing routine, repetitive tasks are at risk, but
AI won't remove them fully.Rather,it'll lead to workplace transformation,"he said.

A.They will undergo a massive wave of firings.
B.They will hire people with advanced AI skills.
C.They may rely on AI instead of adding new staff.
D.They may gradually change their business model.
30.What does "sobering"underlined in the last paragraph mean?
A.Encouraging.B.Alarming.
C.Confusing.
D.Relaxing.
31.What is this text mainly about?

B.Why companies are struggling to fire employees.

A new study has found that hedgehogs (have incredibly sensitive hearing. The
animals can hear high-pitched sounds that humans, cats and dogs can't detect, according to
scientists.Experts now hope that special noise-making devices could be built to help keep
hedgehogs away from roads.
Hedgehog numbers are in decline and cars are a big factor.A 2022 report revealed that
hedgehog numbers in the British countryside had dropped by up to 75%in just over 20 years.
It is thought that up to a third of hedgehogs are killed by cars when crossing roads.Sophie
Lund Rasmussen, from the University of Oxford,England, had the idea to build a sound
device that could scare hedgehogs away from roads. However, she needed to know how good
their hearing was first.
Researchers worked with 20 hedgehogs from Danish wildlife rescue centres, studying
how their brains responded to short bursts of sound. They found there was brain activity
when hedgehogs heard frequencies between four and 85 kilohertz(kHz).
Frequency measures how much a sound wave vibrates in one second.Anything over 20
kHz,which is the limit that humans can hear,is in the "ultrasonic"range.Dogs can hear up
to 45kHz and cats up to 65kHz.In other words, hedgehogs can hear super high-pitched
noises that humans, dogs and cats can't pick up.
Rasmussen said more research is needed to work out exactly which sounds put off
hedgehogs, but once they know they could design a device that gives off an ultrasound noise.
This could be attached to cars and lawnmowers to scare hedgehogs away from danger, but
not be annoying to humans or most pets.
The test results also raise the possibility that hedgehogs are talking to each other in a
high-pitched chatter that is hidden from humans."Imagine that they're actually chattering all
the time and we just couldn't hear it,"said Rasmussen.
32.What is special about hedgehogs'hearing?
A.It is sensitive to the noise.
B.It is worse than other animals'.
C.It detects high-frequency sounds.
D.It helps them to get delicious food.
33.Why is a sound device needed according to the text?
A.To reduce hedgehogs'deaths.
B.To distract hedgehogs'attention.
C.To improve hedgehogs'hearing.
D.To increase hedgehogs'communication.
34.What can be inferred from the hearing comparison?
A.Cats are the same as dogs.
B.Humans have the best hearing.
C.Hedgehogs have the widest hearing.
D.Hedgehogs are limited to special sounds
35.Where could the ultrasound device be used?
高一英语试卷第5页(共8页)
A.To decrease traffic jams.
B.To scare away other animals.
C.To promote humans'hearing.
D.To prevent hedgehogs from danger.

As a substitute teacher,my daily routine involves driving to a new school almost every
day so I'm usually unable to anticipate the day's events, good or bad!
On one particular day,I was teaching in a very difficult classroom. Some of the schoolboys
didn't finish their homework on time and that really annoyed me.I was managing behavior all
morning and by lunch time,I knew I needed coffee to even consider surviving the afternoon. So at
my lunch break,I drove to a nearby plaza to get a cup of coffee. There I had a wonderful time and
forgot the unpleasant experience in the morning.Upon returning to the car I realized I had locked
my keys and my phone inside!I had about 15 minutes to get back to the school which was a good
4-or-5 minutes drive away.I contemplated rushing back,but it was winter,and I thought a nasty
fall on ice would only make the situation much worse.
So I ran into a restaurant which was in the same plaza and asked the man at the counter
to call me a cab.The man happened to be the manager of the restaurant.I briefly explained
my situation to him,and I could tell by the look in his eyes that he empathized. He hurried
to the back to use the phone while I paced in the restaurant.I had less than 10 minutes to get
back to my school at this point.
The manager returned only to tell me that the cab company had put him on hold and
then the line got disconnected. My expression,I assume, began to resemble some
combination of hopelessness and fear.
Without a second thought, the manager grabbed his coat and offered to drive me to
the school.
The manager's calm behavior and kind nature made me lose in thought.
