Shawn Triplett knew there was a desperate need to help the children of Mayfield,
Kentucky, after a deadly storm struck the town.
Mayfield was one of the towns hardest hit after a line of storms crossed the
central US on Friday night and Saturday morning.Triplett-a Mayfield resident and a
former soldier-was in Chicago that Friday night.Alarmed by the weather reports,
his wife and two young children went to stay in a hotel of the nearby town,Paducah,
without suffering the storms and eventually out of the path of the tornadoes ()
Able to return home the next morning,Triplett was shocked by how the town
was destroyed and wanted to help however he could. He arrived at the volunteer
center, where he was asked to guide a photo-journalist through streets filled with
remains. That night, the two returned to shelters where they saw many suffered
families including one woman comforting her son over their lost Christmas.
"It was very.heartbreaking, too much for me to handle,"he said. Therefore,he
decided that more needed to be done for the children affected by the storm.Noticing
that supplies available were necessities such as generators ()and bottled water,
he turned to his friends on social media for donations so that he could go to Walmart
and get toys and gifts for the kids.Around $2,000 were raised, and the store gave
Triplett a discount upon learning of his efforts. As word spread on websites, more
donations poured in.He was able to return the following day and another $6,000 was
spent on toys and board games,he said.Forty pairs of shoes were also picked up at a
local Shoe Sensation.Triplett and other volunteers will wrap and give out the toys to
any child or family in need.He credits the kindness of everyone who tried to help and
get families back on their feet right before the holidays.

"When AI videos are just as good as normal videos,I wonder what that will do
to short video platforms and how that will impact the millions of creators currently
making content for a living. There must be scary times,"an influential content creator,
Jimmy Donaldson, said.Donaldson's concerns follow the release of a social media
platform able to produce short-form AI videos, including videos of individuals who
"upload"themselves onto the app.Other content creators have also spoken out about
the consequences of platforms where every video is from AI.
Still,Donaldson hasn't shied away from having a go at the technology. In July,
Donaldson made an online tool producing AI-made thumbnails (for the
public, but removed the feature about a week later after heavy criticism()from
other creators. He said he would replace the tool with links to human artists accepting
commissions(委托创作).I care more than any of you could ever imagine about the
community,"he said in a video."It makes me deeply sad when I do something that
people in the community are angry at."
Online content creators are torn between using AI-generated video content and
keeping away from AI creation. While more than 80%of content creators said they
used AI tools for their content, including generating images and videos,one-third said
they had concerns about the quality of the AI-generated content, and 45%said the
technology would make it harder for human creators to stand out, according to a
survey of 620 influencers.
Not everyone sees AI as a bad thing for content creators.Amjad Hanif,a head of
creator payments and products, said that the technology could help balance the
playing field among creators who may not have the same resources as Donaldson."A
lot of the effects-一the visual quality, the visual imagery一are tricky(难办的).Up
until now it's taken an expert team to be able to produce them,"Hanif said."AI is
going to make that available to a much broader group of creators."
28.What phenomenon does the author point out in paragraph 1?
A.AI downloads information of users.
B.AI boosts the spread of short videos.
C.AI will bring challenges to creators.
D.AI has replaced human creators online.
29.Why was Donaldson criticized?
A.He created an AI tool.
B.He promoted AI videos
C.He shared his videos.
D.He disrespected human artists.

A.To support Donaldson's concern.
B.To show public support for AI.
C.To stress the negative impact of AI.
D.To show creators'mixed feelings.
31.What is the advantage of AI according to Amjad Hanif?
A.It helps create equal opportunity.
B.It helps creators attract more viewers.
C.It increases the payments for creators.
D.It improves the special visual effects.

Once, our growing population was seen as central to wildlife extinction, resource
exhaustion,pollution,and environmental destruction.But today,our concerns shift to
decreasing birth rates due to increased reproductive choice for women.
This is a positive development, but is often described as a "crisis"in the media,
highlighting economic and senior care challenges.Lost in the conversation are the
many positive aspects of an aging society, which is the result of people living
healthier and longer lives, and common-sense realities like reduced needs for
infrastructure(基础设施)and lower ecological impacts. Also lost is the fact that our
population still grows by 80 million people each year.
And the consequences of high birth rates are severe.Among them is global
warming. In fact, increased emissions (from population growth have canceled
more than three quarters of the emissions saved through energy efficiency and
renewables over the past three decades.
Yet,no matter how clear the link between population and climate, lowering our
population is notably absent from the conversation on solutions.Instead, the focus is
on technology that will supposedly allow our entire growing population to enjoy the
energy-intensive lifestyles now enjoyed by the rich, and with no climate impacts.
But "green"technology is not the solution it is advertised to be.Its expansion(
)to the degree needed to power a growing population at a proper standard of living
would itself require a shocking investment in fossil fuels. It also requires massive
mining operations, many of which take place on the backs of low-wage workers in
Africa where it is causing destruction of rainforests critical to the survival of great
apes.Besides,it requires 10 times the land area as fossil fuel plants for the same
amount of energy produced.
When global warming threatens to push billions into unsafe temperatures,it is
no time to panic that we are adding fewer to those billions. In fact, decreasing birth
rates should be cause for celebration as they signify advances in gender equality and a
reduced burden on Earth.

Have you ever been asked a question that you know the answer to,but found
yourself incapable of thinking of the correct vocabulary? It's called the
"tip-of-the-tongue"phenomenon or lethologica.When we think of something,the
brain selects words to represent these abstract ideas, and we then speak what is on our
minds. But because this process is so complex, all kinds of things can go wrong,
including the tip-of-the-tongue moments.
This phenomenon can be frustrating.People globally report experiencing
moments where certain words seem momentarily forgotten. In fact, there are quite
some factors behind it.While young adults might experience tip-of-the-tongue
moments once a week, older adults generally experience these moments almost daily.
Additionally,tip-of-the-tongue events are more likely to happen when people are tired.
Other features of memory, like how well the information was stored and the presence
of disturbing memories, can also have an impact.
Metacognitive(元认知的)explanations for the phenomenon suggest that
tip-of-the-tongue states serve as a sort of alarm.Like a warning signal in a car,they
can remind us of a potential problem that needs to be addressed.According to such
explanations,tip-of-the-tongue moments are not a problem in themselves.Rather,
they serve to tell us that there is something going wrong with the retrieval (
system and allow us to correct the issue.

The most common solution for the failure to think of the proper vocabulary is to
not think about it,so that the word can suddenly appear out of nowhere. If
tip-of-the-tongue moments happen frequently or are bothersome,it's important to talk
to a care provider such as a physician or mental health professional. They can do
testing to determine whether a cognitive issue may exist or if it's just a matter of
having one of these common moments.
36.What happens to people experiencing lethologica?
A.They become slightly absent-minded.
B.They make some grammatical errors.
C.They fail to grasp speakers'directions.
D.They struggle to locate specific words.
37.Which group of people is most likely to experience lethologica?
A.An elder with little education.
B.A worker without much sleep.
C.A senior tired from a long trip.
D.A young lady doing physical labor.
38.What can be inferred from explanations in Paragraph 3?
A.The retrieval systen is reparable
B Lethologica leads to mental disorder.
C Lethologica shows no negative effects.
D.The retrieval system is unreliable.
39.What can be the best title for this passage?
A.When Words Fail:Understanding Lethologica
B.Aging and Memory:How Brain Function Declines.
C.Metacognition:The Key to Repairing Your Memory.
D.The Dangers of Lethologica:A Guide to Mental Health.

Sustainable packaging has become a hit in recent years. From paper-based
materials to biodegradable(可生物降解的)alternatives, the shift away from
traditional plastics appears to be a step in the right direction.40
One of the most popular alternatives to plastics is paper-based packaging. The
logic appears sound.41 However, the environmental cost of paper
production is often overlooked().Compared to plastic, producing paper
packaging requires significantly more energy and water.A study highlighted that
paper bags require at least four times more energy to produce than plastic bags.
42 While many brands claim to use responsibly sourced or
recycled paper, the global demand for paper packaging still places great pressure on
forests. This pressure will cause too much tree cutting and habitat loss, harming
wildlife. And the loss of trees will reduce the planet's ability to absorb carbon
dioxide

Moreover,paper-based packaging is usually heavier than plastic packaging.
43
For instance, trucks carrying paper packages use more fuel,
increasing emissions. This extra weight also makes logistics ()more challenging.
Therefore, the full life cycle of parer packaging shows its eco-benefits aren't as
clear as they seem.44This means focusing on reducing waste first, making
better waste management systems.and using sustainable materials in the best way.
Only by doing all these things together can we cut down on environmental harm.
A.This can make transportation less efficient.
B.Therefore, many brands now use paper-based packaging.
3.However,beneath the surface lies a more complex reality.
D.Its production requires four times the energy of plastic bags.
E.The destruction of forests linked to the paper industry is another concern.
F.To achieve sustainable packaging completely,we need a well-rounded approach.
3.Paper is biodegradable, recyclable, and can be obtained from renewable resources.

Are touchscreens in cars dangerous?
It might not have been the first to have a touchscreen but it was Tesla's Model S,
with its minimalist cabin 70 (build)around a huge full-colour display,that
set the trend. For years almost every new car sold comes71.
(come)with a
high-tech,futuristic screen, which controls everything from the air conditioning and
satnav(卫星导航)to the music.Even safety features like automatic lane-keeping are
sometimes screen-controlled.
But are touchscreens safe?Drivers can learn the location of physical controls,
and press buttons
taking their eyes off the road(not least because a lot
of the most useful ones are often on the steering wheel).A touchscreen offers no
physical feedback,
(make)that much harder.And because a screen
must do dozens of jobs, tinding a particular setting often means4(tap)
through several sub-menus.The result, say critics,is a dangerous distraction built into
the car 75 (it).
Research supported that.In 2022 Vi Bilagare,a Swedish motoring magazine,
measured how long it took drivers to do things like changing the temperature
when 76 driving at 110 kilometres per hour.It compared 11 cars with
touchscreens to an older model with real buttons. In the old car, drivers were able to
do all their tasks within ten seconds, during which time the car travelled around 300
metres.In the worst-performing modern car,the same tasks took 45 seconds,during
which the car travelled 1.4km.Even in the best-performing models, testers still took
several seconds277 (long)than in the old car.
Safety organizations are beginning to notice. From January, new rules from
Euro NCAP,an organization that provides safety ratings for carstbe
(sell)
in Europe, will mean no car can get a full five-star score79
certain
crucial functions-for instance, the windscreen wipers -are controlled by real
switches.Euro NCAP's safety guidelines have no legal force. But carmakers use its
ratings as a selling-point.
