Ⅰ.主题语篇阅读
(2025·山东淄博高一上期末)
For generations of children, going to the circus(马戏团) has been one of the greatest experiences of their young lives.Amazing performers and impressive animal shows used to be the standards of what makes a good circus show. But with the rise of animal rights groups and growing awareness of the bitter lives that circus animals lead, more countries around the world have passed laws to ban(禁止) the use of animals in recent years. So far,a total of 26 countries have gone with the times by introducing bans on using animals in shows.
One German circus has found the next reasonable step and introduced a breathtaking holographic(全息图的) show that combines modern technology with the traditional circus atmosphere.Circus Roncalli, which has been touring since 1976,banned the use of wild animals in its shows in the 1990s,long before others began to take similar steps.Since then,Roncalli has used only household horses, but recently decided to stop using any live animals altogether.
“We decided to stop using animals for their benefit,” said Markus Strobl, the media director of Circus Roncalli,in a 2017 interview with RP Online.“Most of the performances in the show would already be done by the artists today. The focus of the Circus Roncalli is on poetic performances. The holographic projections are large enough to fill the entire circus field, measuring 105 feet wide and 16 feet deep, offering 360° visibility for the entire audience.”
Thanks to modern technology,it’s never been a better time for circuses around the world to end the use of live animals and embrace the future.Circus Roncalli is undoubtedly a big step ahead of the game.In fact, their use of 3D holograms of animals—such as elephants, horses, and even goldfish—has already attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers, making it clear that the future of the circus is here.
1.What led to stopping animal shows?
A.Absence of wild animals.
B.Concerns about the animals.
C.Disagreements from performers.
D.Views on good circus shows.
2.From Markus Strobl’s words, what do we know about the holographic show?
A.It presents images from all directions.
B.It focuses on animal performances.
C.It covers part of the circus field.
D.It replaces actors completely.
3.What’s the author’s attitude to the future circus with holographic shows?
A.Doubtful. B.Favorable.
C.Indifferent. D.Opposed.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A New Age of Animal Care
B.The Fall of Traditional Circuses
C.The Rise of Live Animal Shows
D.Animal-free Circuses with Holograms

As technology continues to affect every aspect of our lives,it’s no surprise that artificial intelligence (AI) is making its way into our gardens. For busy modern gardeners,AI offers a way to manage a thriving(茂盛) garden with minimal effort, ensuring that plants receive exactly what they need, when they need it.
One of the most exciting aspects of AI in gardening is its ability to personalize care for each plant.By analyzing data from various sensors placed in the garden,AI systems can determine the specific needs of each plant, such as light, water, and nutrients. The exactness not only leads to healthier plants but also makes better use of resources.
AI is also helping gardeners with plant selection.Based on your location, garden conditions, and personal preferences,AI-driven apps can suggest plants that are most likely to succeed in your garden.A good example is the Plant app, which not only determines plant issues but also suggests the best plants to grow in specific environmental conditions, helping gardeners make informed decisions on plant selection.
As AI continues to advance,we can expect even more innovative applications in gardening.Future AI systems could cover real-time data from satellite imagery and advanced climate models to predict and prepare for extreme weather events, helping gardeners protect their plants from unforeseen threats.Additionally,AI could assist in breeding new plant varieties that are better suited to changing climates.
While AI offers numerous benefits to home gardeners,it’s important to approach this technology with caution. One concern is the over-reliance on AI systems, which could lead to a reduced understanding of natural gardening practices.Additionally, privacy issues may arise,as many AI-powered devices and apps collect data about your garden, which could be shared or sold without your permission. So it is crucial for gardeners to maintain a balance between embracing these innovations and preserving traditional knowledge.
1.What is the AI system’s personalized care to each plant based on?
A.Apps installed on phones.
B.Data collected from sensors.
C.Experiences offered by gardeners.
D.Diseases diagnosed by plant doctors.
2.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

About 12% of the total global energy demand comes from heating and cooling homes and businesses.A new study suggests that using underground water to maintain comfortable temperatures could reduce consumption of natural gas and electricity in this section by 40% in the US.The approach is called ATES,short for aquifer thermal energy storage(含水层热能储存).
“We need storage to absorb energy from the sun and wind. It’s crucial to creating affordable, reliable, and deeply environmental-friendly electricity systems. Most people are interested in batteries and other kinds of electrical storage. But we were wondering whether there was any opportunity to use geothermal(地热的) energy storage,” said first author A.T.D Perera.“With ATES,energy can be stored for a long period of time, without adding an additional burden to the grid(输电网).”
ATES is a pleasantly simple concept that takes advantage of the heat-absorbing property of water and the natural geological features of the planet. You simply pull existing underground water up and heat it at the surface in the summer with environmental heat or energy. Then you send it back down.It stays fairly hot because the Earth is a good insulator(绝热体).
“Unlike above-ground tank-based water or ice storage systems,ATES will not need space. It’s also more efficient and can support larger communities in cooling or heating than traditional geothermal heat pump systems that rely on heat moving with the underground soil,” added co-author Hong Tianzhen.
A major benefit of ATES is that it will become more efficient as weather becomes more extreme in the coming years due to climate change. The hotter summers and severer winters could increase the amount of free thermal energy that can be stored with ATES.“It’s very much a realistic thing to do and this work is really about showing its value,” said Perera.“This technology is ready to go,so to speak. We just need to do it.”
5. What do we know about ATES?
A.It is aimed at replacing natural energy.
B.It mainly depends on batteries to function.
C.It is technologically demanding.
D.It helps achieve an environmental-friendly society.
6.How does Hong Tianzhen explain ATES’s advantages?
A.By giving examples. B.By discussing results.
C.By making comparisons. D.By analyzing principles.
7.Which will affect ATES’s efficiency most?
A.Extreme weather. B.Insulated materials.
C.The time of storage. D.The type of energy.
8.What can be the best title for the text?
A.A Turning Point in Energy Usage
B.A Solution to Green Cooling and Heating
C.A Transformation in the US Electricity System
D.A Discovery About Geothermal Energy Storage

Whale communication has long been a puzzle for scientists, with their underwater sound—“click...click...click”—remaining largely unexplained. However, thanks to the surprising abilities of artificial intelligence(AI),researchers from a program can interpret the sounds of these amazing sea animals.
The program is called the Whale Translation Project(WTP),whose meaning is to know what whales are saying. Its goal is clear but very difficult to achieve.Understanding the communication of whales and other animals could inspire conservation efforts. For example, the discovery that humpback whales sing to each other in the 1960s led to successful conservation activities and laws.
The WTP started when Gruber,a biologist at Harvard University, turned to a computer scientist for help about dealing with a large amount of data on whale sounds. They thought of applying machine learning, used for improving human language translations,to whales. The sound of click, similar to a binary code(二进制),is easy for AI to analyze.
Scientists once presented the sounds of a whale using a series of lines to show the number of clicks per second. Now,with the help of AI,Gruber can quickly turn the thousands of whale sounds from hours of recordings into a new kind of pictures that look like musical notes. This method helps to find tiny differences in the sounds.Gruber can use AI to analyze the differences and the specific context, like the behavior of moving to the surface and hunting for food, and thus understand the meaning of the whale sound easily. He can also discover how whales interact, getting 99% right in predicting(预测) the next click.
This kind of work isn’t limited to whales.Suresh Neethirajan,a computer science and agriculture professor, studies how farmers can use real-time observation to explain animal behaviors. He collects data, such as body temperature, paired with recorded sounds and videos,to understand whether animals are comfortable or not. With AI,he can recognise sick animals quickly, improving their well-being.
1.What is the purpose of mentioning the discovery in the 1960s?
A.To show the success of protecting the environment.
B.To explain the difficulty of saving humpback whales.
C.To stress the value of studying animal communication.
D.To introduce the challenge of understanding whale language.
2.How can AI help according to paragraph 4?
A.It records whale sound quickly.
B.It processes sound data effectively.
C.It reads musical notes correctly.
D.It promotes whale interactions directly.
3.What can we learn about AI according to the last paragraph?
A.It cures diseases of animals.
B.It improves farmers’ well-being.
C.It aims to change animal behavior.
D.It helps to understand animals’ needs.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Scientists develop machine learning.

From the “Sultan of Swat” to the “Colossus of Clout,” no baseball players has been given more eye-catching names than Babe Ruth. But there’s one name for the heroic Babe you might not know: cancer (癌症) pioneer.
Ruth, born in February 1895, was the widely known king of baseball by his 30th birthday. By 1925, he had won four World Series and established himself as the sport’s most fearsome hitter.
But he was also famous as a heavy eater when he wasn’t on the field. On April 7, 1925, on the way to a game, Ruth told teammates he felt unwell and passed out. He was rushed to the hospital and timely treated—having one part of his intestine (肠道) removed.
Several years later, Ruth found himself back at the hospital in an even more terrible situation and was told he had cancer. Later that year, doctors suggested that Ruth take part in a medical test for an experimental drug (药物), which had only been tested on mice. Ruth, who didn’t want to know what drug he was receiving or why, agreed, making him one of the first patients anywhere to receive the special treatment.
Even though Ruth only lived another year, the method did lengthen his life, which was regarded a milestone in medicine. By 1998, 40 percent of patients with the same kind of cancer that Ruth developed had a survival rate of five or more years.
Thanks to Ruth and other patients in the study, treatments are much more effective and specific today. “I realized that if anything was learned about that type of treatment, whether good or bad,” Ruth wrote in his book, “it would be of use in the future to the medical profession and maybe to a lot of people with my same trouble.”
24. What do Ruth’s many titles show?
A. His professional struggles. B. His personal experience.
C. His widespread popularity. D. His medical contributions.
25. What does the author suggest about Ruth’s health problem in 1925?
A. He failed the game. B. It was related to his eating habits.
C. He was given some trial medicine. D. It resulted from the game stress.
26. What can be inferred about the cancer treatment Ruth got?
A. It was given against his will.
B. It was widely used on humans.
C. It lengthened his life by over five years.
D. It made a difference to later cancer patients.
27. Which of the following can best describe Babe Ruth?
A. Selfless and brave. B. Patient and helpful.
C. Gifted and organized. D. Hopeful and confident.

Mosquitoes (蚊子) are found almost everywhere in the world, with the exception of Antarctica and Iceland, due to their extreme cold. But that may be changing. This week, three mosquitoes were discovered in Iceland whose extreme cold winters have long protected it from mosquitoes— marking the country’s first documented finding of these insects in the wild.
A single mosquito from a different species was discovered many years ago on an airplane at the country’s Keflavk International Airport. But this is the first record of mosquitoes appearing in the natural environment in Iceland. These three insects are native to a huge part of the Eastern Hemisphere, varying from North Africa to northern Siberia. It appears well adapted to colder climates (气候), mainly because adults can ride out the cold in sheltered places, which allows them to stand long, cold winters when temperatures drop below freezing.
It’s unclear how the mosquitoes arrived in Iceland, but guesses include the possibility that it came through shipments. Further observation will be needed in the spring to see whether the species can survive the winter and truly become established in Iceland. Mosquitoes, which tend to thrive (繁盛) in warmth and wetness, are likely to be one of the few real winners as the planet heats up. As climate change advances, bringing more heat, storms and floods, the habitat of these illness-carrying insects is increasing. Rising temperatures also allow mosquitoes to grow faster and live longer.
Iceland is no stranger to the effects of climate change and has experienced record-breaking heat. In May, temperatures in parts of the country were more than 18°F higher than usual. This extreme heat was made 40 times more likely by climate change.
But there are still a lot of unknowns about how mosquitoes are acting as the world warms and experts advise against directly connecting Iceland’s discovery with global warming.
28. How does the writer develop paragraph 1?
A. By providing a fact. B. By giving an example.
C. By making a contrast. D.By presenting a discovery.
29. What can be learned about the mosquitoes in Iceland?
A. They were found in the wild. B. They were the first in Iceland.
C. They were from North Africa. D. They were of different species.
30. After the mosquitoes appeared in Iceland, researchers will next focus on their________.
A. arrival reason B. habitat preference
C. survival outcome D. population control
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Mosquitoes’ Journey to Iceland

Most adults cannot remember events from early childhood, a phenomenon (现象) known as infantile amnesia. This is true whether you ask a college student or a grandparent, suggesting adults’ shortage of infant (婴儿) memories is not just the result of general forgetting that happens with the passage of time.
There are two possible explanations for this. One is that the hippocampus, a brain area important for memory, is too underdeveloped in infants to store long-term memories. Another is that the infant brain can store memories, but we finally cannot reach them. Recent studies in mice show that the hippocampus not only can store memories early in life but may keep them into adulthood. But what about humans? A research team conducted fMRI studies with infants who were wide awake— a method not tried before because it is hard to study babies who move a lot and are hard to stay focused. Since memory formation depends on wakeful experiences, through over 400 tries and a lot of help from families, the team developed new ways to keep infants calm and interested.
In one key test, infants were shown photographs of faces, objects and settings one at a time during fMRI scanning. Soon after, their memory was checked by showing each of these known photographs next to a new image of the same kind. When infants looked longer at the earlier seen photograph, researchers labeled (标记) it as remembered; or it was considered forgotten. Results showed greater hippocampal activity when infants saw images they remembered, especially in those over 12 months old. These results suggest that the infant hippocampus can form memories from short experiences.
These findings support that early memories are stored but become hard to reach. Important questions remain: How long do these memories stay? Could earlier memories be found again? Answering these could solve a long-standing scientific problem and help understand language learning, developmental disorders, and memory loss. What’s your earliest memory? Earlier ones may stay hidden in your brain.
32. What do the underlined words in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Memory change with age. B. Lack of infant memories.
C. General forgetting over time. D. Unwillingness to remember events.
33. What is the challenge in using fMRI to study infants’ memory?
A. Getting enough family help.
B. Applying a new technology.
C. Keeping the attention of wakeful babies.
D. Understanding memory formation.
34. What did the key test find about infants’ memory?
A. Memory improves greatly after age two.
B. Memories from babyhood can last for years.
C. Infants look longer at what they’ve forgotten.
D. Infants store memories they later fail to get back.
35. Why are the important questions mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To guide further studies. B. To raise public concerns.
C. To doubt research methods. D.To provide possible solutions.

My Views on Internet Memes
Internet memes have become a meaningful part of teenage life. They serve as
both a source of fun and a tool for social connection, yet they may also encourage
simple thinking or spread unsuitable messages.
To make the most of memes,I suggest schools organize workshops to help
students tell the positive from the harmful.Meanwhile,we young users should ty to
create and share memes that are creative and inspiring.By using memes wisely,we
14
can enjoy their humor while also growing into responsible digital citizens.
Let's shape a healthier online culture together.(94 words)

【TEXT10原文】W:Good morning, everyone.Today I'd like to share the story of Leo,a
young local artist known for his wonderful drawings of city life.Unlike many artists who find
ideas in quiet rooms,Leo loves creating in busy places. He often draws in cafes or public parks,
where people's activities help him think of new ideas. And besides these busy places, traveling
gives him most of his ideas.Leo has visited over twenty cities, and each journey gives him new
faces and stories to draw.Recently,he started a new project:drawing on old maps he has collected.
He says the lines of the maps go well with his drawings, creating a special feeling of place and
memory.A big plan for Leo is to have a big show in the city museum next year.He believes art
should be shared with everyone, not just kept in those places. His love for meeting and talking to
the public is truly what makes his work special.
