Yasmeen Lari looked out of the car window across Pakistan’s Siran Valley, saddened by the loss of its once-green landscape. A massive earthquake just one week prior had killed up to 79,000 people and turned the valley into mud and flattened buildings. The 65-year-old architect was there to lead settlement reconstruction, but she had never done disaster-relief work before. She was filled with anticipation after a two-hour flight and this five-hour drive.
Darkness had fallen before her driver pulled into the rescue base. At 1,500 meters, it was safer from aftershocks and rock slides than lower ground. When she stepped out of the car and was briefed on the villages needing immediate help, the enormity of the task ahead hit her full force.
Lari, Pakistan’s first female architect since 1964, was famous for designing modern glass and concrete towers in Karachi. Here, though, she’d design earthquake-resistant homes with stone and wood. In a simple cottage near the camp, she would spend the next four months working with volunteer architects and engineers to help displaced families build new homes, even as temperatures dropped and snow fell.
“You can’t imagine the desolation (荒凉),” Lari recalls of those days in the mountains. Her team, often the first to arrive on the scene, were greeted with unexpected hospitality (热情款待), given the circumstances. On one visit, villagers pulled out their best chairs and table rescued from the earthquake. “They’d lost everything,” she says. “But they put this damaged table in front of us and covered it with a beautiful patterned cloth. And then they served us their World Food Programme food: biscuits, tea and eggs.”
With each passing day, Lari was re-engineering her identity — from “starchitect” to humanitarian. The profession had been good to her, but she had grown disappointed with projects for the rich. And doing disaster-relief work felt deeply right. So she made it her new mission.
24.Why was Lari in Siran Valley?
A.To help with the rebuilding. B.To study local housing styles.
C.To develop a travel project. D.To survey earthquake damage.
25.How did Lari feel after learning about the villages in need?
A.Calm. B.Eager. C.Beaten. D.Challenged.
26.What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A.The cottage was too cold for work.
B.The cottage was designed for campers.
C.Lari adjusted her strategy to the situation.
D.Lari preferred traditional building materials.
27.What effect did Lari’s days in the mountains have on her?
A.She was inspired to value generosity.
B.She was motivated to refocus her career.
C.She was shocked by the villagers’ optimism.
D.She was troubled by the lack of relief supplies.

When I was about to start my Ph.D.studies, I was full of excitement, nursing a firm belief: I would become a scientist.
On the first day, I immediately felt out of place. The laboratory was full of shiny instruments I had only ever seen in textbooks. My teacher handed me a tube and asked me to set up a reaction I had never done before. I stayed in the lab until midnight, afraid of being left behind.
Most of all, I was hit hard by the language barrier. I was used to classes taught in my mother tongue, but here, everyone spoke English. After the presentation that left me red in the face, just as I was considering leaving science, a senior lab member pulled me aside. “You are not here because of your English,” he reminded me. “You came here because you can think.” His simple words gave me the courage to continue. I carried a tape recorder to every class, replaying presentations to fill gaps. My English progress was slow but steady. By the time I defended my Ph.D., I could express my ideas clearly, and I had come to see my accent not as a barrier, but as a part of my identity that I was proud of. My confidence had skyrocketed.
After continuing training in Canada and the US, I returned to my homeland to run my own lab. I assumed my students wouldn’t suffer from the language barrier as I had. But gradually I saw they faced with the same doubts — anxiety about career, confusion about identity. I realized my job was to teach them to think critically and, most of all, give them confidence to succeed in science and in life.
One afternoon, I saw a student wrestling with various samples, her gloved hands carefully labeling tube after tube, just like mine used to. Remembering my frustration and what my lab partner once told me, I said, “ You are not here because 38 . You are here because you can think.” Her smile told me she was inspired by these words.
Today, what I value most in my job is the transformation I see in the students who arrive nervous but leave confident enough to challenge me, their professor. Every time I walk into the classroom, I see a younger version of myself, and remember the bridge I had to cross to get where I am today. For me, helping others cross that bridge is the true reward of scientific life.

D.She accepted more help from her teacher than from her lab mates.
30.Which of the following sentences best fits the blank 38 in Para. 5?
A.your English is perfect B.you use shiny instruments
C.you wash tubes carefully D.your experiments always work
31.What moral does the author want to convey through the story?
A.Language barriers are the biggest challenge in scientific research.

When spring arrives, keeping warm becomes less of an issue. However, scientists remind us it is not just a seasonal necessity — heat is also a valuable energy resource that can be stored. Researchers at Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) have discovered an innovative solution beneath our feet: using soil as an efficient thermal energy(热能) storage system.
KTU professor Dr Tadas Ždankus and his team have been investigating how the ground can serve as a medium for heat storage. At the core of their research is a ground-based heat accumulator that would store left energy underground and make it available when demand peaks.
Initially, the team explored how to use wind energy to produce heat via a hydraulic system (液压系统). They found that so-called hydraulic losses, typically seen as inefficiencies, were actually generating usable heat. However, part of heat was lost before reaching buildings. The question became how to not only decrease heat loss but also store it.
To test this idea, the researchers conducted experiments using an artificial heat source placed in surface soil layers. They measured how heat spreads and persists in the ground. In one test, when the soil was heated to the boiling point, it caused a phase change (相变), in which liquid water becomes vapor.“Phase change can be an efficient way. We noticed a sharp temperature rise wherever the vapour flow reached. This means the energy is moving and can be controlled.” says Prof. Ždankus.
Once the possibility of underground heat storage was confirmed, researchers began exploring its practical applications. They developed a pilot model ground energy cell to study how heat spread through soil. The year-long measurements revealed the soil beneath buildings could passively store heat, making use of the natural downward flow of heat from buildings into the ground.
To put these ground-based storage systems into widespread use, researchers are now developing scaled-down pilot models and refining heat distribution control methods.“Our immediate goal is to integrate existing solutions into a system that can benefit both industry and residential sectors.” Ždankus concludes.
32.What is the main goal of the KTU research project?
A.To reduce winter heating costs. B.To capture thermal energy from soil.
C.To store underground heat for later use. D.To promote hydraulic system efficiency.
33.What can be inferred from paragraphs 3-4?
A.Phase change makes heat control possible. B.Hydraulic losses can be avoided by heat transfer.
C.Vapour flow contributes to big temperature drops. D.Heat production poses a great challenge to experts.
34.What are researchers doing for the practical use of the systems?
A.Building large-scale industrial heating systems. B.Developing test models with improved control.
C.Applying the technology to residential sectors. D.Reducing the energy consumption of buildings.
35.Which of the following would be the suitable title for the text?
A.From Wind to Warmth: an Unexpected Path
B.Future System: Uniting Industry and Home Heating
C.A New Discovery: Turning Hydraulic Loss into Gain
D.The Ground Beneath: A New Frontier in Heat Storage

I am Ava, a positive girl who always focus on the bright side. For example, being the tallest in the class may bother some but I can easily reach the top shelves in the library.
But this got challenged this February when a new student named Ava Zafra came. Ms. Wu called me “Ava J.” and her “Ava Z.,” But others quickly found a new way to tell us apart: “Little Ava” (who barely reached Ms. Wu’s waist) and “Big Ava.” Often, someone yelled “Ava!” then shook his head when I looked up: “Not you-Big Ava. I want Little Ava.” Each mistake was a tiny scratch on my heart, and I could feel my confidence being carved away.
We hardly had anything in common. I loved soft pinks and bright yellows. She wore all black. In art classes, I drew cute kittens on rainbows; she painted her face black, stomping and growling, “A fierce monster! Fear me!” I’d avoid her with my ears covered. I hated loud yelling.
Ms. Wu announced a play, Clever Jack. I hoped for the fairy(精灵), picturing how pretty I would be in the fairy costume with glowing wings. I just got a fairy costume as a birthday gift. I perched, twisting my shirt, as she called roles. “The fairy: Ava Z.” My heart sank. Then, the teacher turned to me. “Ava J., the giant.” My throat tightened. The giant was ugly, scary, with only one line, an angry shout “ARRGH!” I stared at my desk, too sad to notice Little Ava’s frown. We practiced two weeks, and I remembered all the moves and lines perfectly, even the fairy’s. Classmates said our height “fit the roles perfectly,” but we never smiled.
Costume day (试装日) came. Little Ava’s fairy dress looked adorable, but she frowned as if she’d rather wear mud. Then Ms. Wu held out my costume: a dark coat, as rough as sandpaper, which scratched my fingers the second I hesitantly took it. My last hope for a beautiful costume was dashed. I hid the coat behind, turning to run away, too embarrassed to let anyone see my tears?
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I rushed into the bathroom, only to find Little Ava already there, crying too.

W: No, I’m okay with my meal plan. I am actually here about the food in the student cafeteria.
M: Oh, I see. What seems to be the problem?
W: I am a little concerned that a lot of the food you serve isn’t really that healthy, like there are so many deep-fried foods.
M: As a matter of fact, we recently changed the type of oil we use in our fryer. It is the healthiest available. And would you believe that at least 10 students have already complained that the French fries don’t taste as good since we switched.

【答案】24.A 25.D 26.C 27.B

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】One possible version:
I rushed into the bathroom, only to find Little Ava already there, crying too. Shocked, I stood still for a moment, then gently handed her a tissue. She wiped her eyes and whispered that she hated being the fairy — she disliked cute dresses and speaking soft lines, and had always wanted to play the bold giant instead. I stared at her in surprise, then admitted I’d dreamed of being the graceful fairy and hated the giant’s rough costume and single loud line. For the first time, we stopped seeing each other as Little Ava and Big Ava. We talked quietly, sharing our unhappiness, and a strange warmth grew between us.
The next day, it was finally time for the play to begin. Nervous but determined, we stepped onto the stage. I delivered my only line with full confidence, making the audience laugh. Little Ava performed the fairy gently and vividly, winning quiet admiration. After the play, classmates cheered for both of us. Ms. Wu praised our excellent performance. Looking at each other, we smiled sincerely. From that day on, I no longer minded being Big Ava, and we became good friends, learning to accept and appreciate our differences.

A.She had to give up due to language and academic pressure.
B.She eventually gained confidence to express herself clearly.
C.She was the only non-native English speaker in her laboratory.
B.Returning to one’s homeland is the fundamental goal for scientists.

D.Hard work and determination are essential for a successful scientific career.
