Ⅰ.阅读理解

Maybe you grew up eating food made by your grandmothers, and these mouth-watering dishes can bring back sweet, unforgettable memories.Perhaps it was Italian noodles or even Chinese dumplings. Now,at Enoteca Maria,a unique restaurant in New York City, you can eat the dishes same to your grandmother’s cooking.
When Joe Scaravella opened his restaurant,he named it after his mother. Then,in order to remember his grandmother,Joe invited local grandmothers to cook Italian dishes in his kitchen.“I wanted to try to recreate that:the grandma cooking in the kitchen,”he said.
Enoteca Maria is an Italian restaurant where half of the menu changes daily. The fixed half is Italian;the changeable half includes cuisines from all over the world. And what makes the restaurant unique is not professional chefs calling the shots in the kitchen, but grandmothers! Each night,a grandmother from a different country designs a fresh menu, honoring her native cuisine and the food she loves best.Currently, the restaurant is only open three days a week:Fridays,Saturdays and Sundays.Although it’s usually packed, the grandmothers arrange everything orderly.
When the restaurant first opened, several local Italian grandmothers from different Italian regions would cook their own special dishes on a regular schedule, sometimes launching friendly competitions of whose dish was better. When people from different cultures visited the restaurant to get a taste of original Italy,Scaravella decided to extend the competition to include women from across the globe,to make sense to celebrate every culture, and thus,in 2015,the “Grandmothers of the World” initiative was born.
Now,business is running at full speed with around 30 grandmothers from different nationalities cooking in the kitchen.

3-D printers are very hot today. They are being put to all kinds of uses, ranging from creating car models for movies to architectural models. However, none of these ideas are as shocking as the one suggested by Anjan Contractor, who believes that they will be the key to ending world hunger.
According to some experts, world population will increase to 10-12 billion by the end of this century. This means that food will become very expensive and possibly, even out of reach, for billions of people.
This is where 3-D printing may save the day.Anjan thinks that the only way to solve the problem will be to equip every kitchen with a 3-D printer and print out meals from tubes of powder and oil.He believes that these meals with a shelf life of over 30 years would result in less food wastage.
Most important of all,it would be easier to make food from things that we now do not consider edible(可食用的).A great example of that is the protein from meat. Most experts believe that as the population grows, the supply is not going to be enough to feed everyone.Anjan believes that we could easily get the same protein from insects.Though all this futuristic food may sound unappealing, the scientists believe that when faced with a terrible food crisis,it will be very welcomed.
While this may sound a little difficult to believe,Anjan seems to have convinced the scientists at NASA,who are looking for a solution to feeding astronauts when they go on really long missions, like the one being planned to Mars. They gave Anjan $125,000 to start building the first real 3-D printer that creates the food.
Anjan is not the only one with this idea.A group led by Professor Hod Lipson has been experimenting with this idea since 2011 and has even succeeded in printing out cube-shaped creations from powdered milk and cookies with limited sugar!

George Shull was born in 1874 on a farm in Clark County,Ohio, and his knowledge of plants and hybrids came at an early age.Being needed on the farm,Shull received his early formal education off and on.However,it was supplemented(增补) by intense home study so that by 1892 he was teaching in a public school, and later attending Antioch College.
In 1901,he graduated from Antioch and went to the University of Chicago to do graduate work. With his knowledge of botany and experience with farming practices,Shull passed a Civil Service exam, and was appointed as a botanical assistant at the U.S.National Herbarium. After earning his doctorate,he was appointed to be in charge of plant work at the Station for Experimental Evolution in 1904.
He began working on corn in 1905.Following Gregor Mendel’s example,Shull obtained purebred(纯种的) strains of corn through self-pollination.The purebred strains were less healthy and productive, but when he crossed the purebred strains, the hybrid yields were better than any of the parents or those pollinated in the open fields. He immediately recognized the potential for using this strategy to improve crop yields.
In 1915,Shull accepted a professorship at Princeton University. With his encouragement,Princeton University Press began the publication of a new journal,Genetics.Shull was the managing editor for ten years.Genetics is still one of the top international science journals.
Shull retired in 1942.He and his wife spent most of their later years with their children and grandchildren.

For all of human history, eating meat has meant killing animals. 1 They produce meat by growing cells obtained from an animal’s body.
Lab-grown meat, also called “cell-cultivated” or “cultured” meat,is made by feeding a mix of nutrients to animal cells in steel tanks in labs. The idea is to create an alternative to agriculturally raised meat. And unlike other meat substitutes which are made from plant proteins and other ingredients,lab-grown meat is real meat. 2
Recently, the U.S.Department of Agriculture (USDA) has given two companies approval to sell lab-grown chicken. 3 It’s aimed at eliminating(消除) harm to animals, and reducing the environmental impacts of grazing(放牧) and growing feed for animals.
“Everything we know about how meat can be made is going to change. But don’t expect to see cultivated meat in grocery stores just yet,” said Uma Vaieti,CEO of UPSIDE Foods. 4 That’s because it cannot yet be produced on the scale of traditional meat.
“To make cultivated meat,we need much more energy,” said Bruce Friedrich, president and founder of the Good Food Institute. However, those high-energy needs will be offset(补偿) by the reduction in land and water use and other benefits. It’s thought that cultured meat will be probably produced on a large scale. 5
A.Lab-grown meat is much more expensive now.
B.When ready,lab-grown meat is formed into shapes.
C.The approval launches a new era of meat production.
D.It looks, smells and tastes like any other grocery store version.
E.But scientists behind lab-grown meat say that’s no longer necessary.
F.That could also offer a solution to feeding the world’s growing population.
G.The typical way meat is produced now is a risk factor for the emergence of diseases.
