At the school writing club, Penny and I were paired up as critique (评论) partners—friends who read each other’s writing and gave helpful advice. She could write perfect sentences, while my ideas were great but my grammar was poor.
Just after we handed our stories to each other, something felt strange. Then it hit me: she had copied the idea from a story I had read! I couldn’t believe it. How could she do that? My mind was racing. After a deep breath, I forced myself to tell her the truth.
A long, silent moment passed before she finally spoke, “Jenny… I knew I shouldn’t have done this… but I never had a single idea for a story…” With that, she rushed off, a few tears falling down her face.
Suddenly, I remembered that my job as her critique partner was to help. But how?
The question stayed in my mind until I saw my mom and brother building a tall tower in the living room. Mom stacked (垒) the blocks colorfully but some fell quickly, while my brother made the base safe but not so colorful. Then they decided to work together: her eye for color and his care for strength (力量) made the tower taller, stronger, and more colorful — much better than either could do alone.
Suddenly it clicked!
The next morning, I found Penny and made a suggestion. I said, “What if we worked on a story together?” “Can we?” she asked with doubt mixed with hope. “I do have one new idea. Maybe we can write about two friends,” I said, “And one has a big problem and they share their own strengths.” “And everything ends up perfectly,” she added.
I smiled, “Just like us!”

People often call dogs “man’s best friends”. Now, a study shows why they are really our best friends. Scientists at UCLA Medical Center in California say dogs can help people feel better and stay healthy.
In the study, scientists watched 76 patients with heart problems. They put the patients into three groups. One group got visits from people who brought dogs. Another group got visits from people without dogs. The last group had no visitors at all. The scientists wrote down how the patients felt before, during, and after the visits.
The scientists found that patients who got visits from people with dogs felt better. They were 24 percent less nervous than before. The group that got only people’s visits felt 10 percent less nervous. The group without visitors felt the most nervous. After just 12 minutes with the dogs, the patients’ hearts worked better.
The scientists showed the study to the American Heart Association and the Pet Care Trust Foundation paid for the study. The dogs used in the study were therapy (治疗) dogs. Therapy dogs were trained to be calm and kind to patients. Some of the dogs were big and some were small.
Many people know that animals are helpful. Trained monkeys can carry things for disabled people. ________ Some hospitals even bring in animals, like horses, to cheer up kids who are sick.
Before the study, there wasn’t much proof (证据) that therapy animals could make people healthier. Nurse Kathie M. Cole, who worked on the study, hopes doctors will see how good animals can be for patients. “Dogs are a great comfort (安慰),” she said. “They help people feel happier and loved. That is really important when someone is nervous or not feeling well.”

【答案】Possible versions:
A Good Example Around Me
My mother is a good example around me. I have learned a lot from her.
Last year, she decided to learn English from the beginning. Though she was busy and often felt tired, she never gave up. Every evening, she spent an hour reading and reciting words. When I had difficulty with my study, she said, “It’s never about how fast you go, but about keeping moving forward.” Her patience and determination deeply moved me.
In my eyes, a good example isn’t someone perfect, but the one who keeps trying. From her, I learned that with a strong will, we can achieve anything.
