Leaves will soon make their gradual change to vivid colors of yellow, orange and red as we head through the fall months, but when you can usually expect peak color to arrive depends on where you live.
When Will Fall Leaves Peak For You?
— Late September or Early October: The Rockies, the northern parts of Minnesota through Michigan and a stretch from upstate New York to northern New England see peak color first.
— Mid to Late October: Potential for peak fall color advances through the Midwest into the Appalachians and much of the Northeast in mid to late October. Most other areas in the western region, including valleys, see fall’s brightest color by this time of year as well.
— November: Much of the mid-Atlantic coast and the South are the last holdouts to see peak color in November.
Why Do Leaves Change Color?
A shorter amount of daylight is the primary factor for the color of the leaves to begin to change. As nights grow longer and cooler, production of the green pigment (色素) slows and eventually stops. This allows the yellow and orange pigments to shine through, revealing the many beautiful colors of fall.
What Makes A Good Colorful Season?
Location matters:
Higher altitudes and northern latitudes cool first, causing earlier color changes.
Weather’s role:
The perfect recipe includes warm, sunny days paired with cool nighttime temperatures.
Soil moisture (湿度):
Sufficient soil moisture through spring and summer can help increase the chances of the colorful leaves.
Wind warning:
If a strong windstorm affects an area that’s near peak color, then it can tear off leaves from trees to some extent, reducing the display of peak color.
So grab your camera, plan your trip, and get ready for nature’s colorful delight!
21. When can you enjoy peak fall color in valleys of the western region?
A. Late September. B. Early October. C. Late October. D. Mid November.
22. What mainly causes the change of leaf colors?
A. Rainy nights in autumn. B. Reduced daylight hours.
C. Uncovered pigments. D. Rising temperature.
23. What may ruin the full display of peak color?
A. The wet soil. B. The tree species.
C. The hot summer. D. The severe storm.

Pioneering eye doctor Professor Fred Hollows had a simple vision that everyone in the world should have access to good eye care and sight-restoring surgery. Instead of building a profitable private practice, Fred chose to focus on breaking down the barriers to eye care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia and for people in poor countries worldwide.
Unfortunately, in 1989, Fred was diagnosed with cancer. Knowing his time was limited, he became a man on a mission to make sure his work would continue. Just before he passed away in 1993, he was convinced by his wife, Gabi Hollows, to establish The Fred Hollows Foundation. Gabi, the Foundation’s founding director, describes their work as “like dropping a stone in the lake and watching the ripples grow.”
Fred’s early approach was simple: treat eye problems, train local eye health workers, and make technology affordable. This “treat, train and equip” method became the blueprint for the Foundation’s work. For example, in Nepal, Fred partnered with a young doctor, Sanduk Ruit. Together, they set up training and built factories that could produce high-quality lenses (晶体) for eye surgery for less than $5, a huge reduction from the $150 they cost in industrialised countries.
Over the past 30 years, The Fred Hollows Foundation has restored sight to more than 3 million people worldwide. It has also delivered over 200 million doses of antibiotics to fight trachoma (沙眼), an infectious disease that causes blindness. The Foundation has persuaded governments to include eye health in their national health plans.
Fred was driven by a powerful sense of injustice. He believed it was “not right to let people go blind when they don’t have to.” Today, the Foundation he inspired is one of Australia’s best-known charities. Though there are still many challenges, his Foundation and his spirit live on, ensuring his crucial work continues across the globe.
24. Why was The Fred Hollows Foundation established?
A. To continue Fred’s mission.
B. To expand a private clinic.
C. To get support from government.
D. To honor Gabi Hollows.
25. How was lens cost reduced?
A. By importing cheaper ones.
B. By producing lens locally.
C. By receiving donations.
D. By reusing surgical lenses.
26. Which words can best describe Fred?
A. Selfless and responsible.
B. Ambitious and humble.
C. Reserved and ordinary.
D. Cautious and fortunate.
27. What does the passage mainly describe?
A. Advances in eye surgery.
B. A doctor’s charity mission.
C. The history of trachoma.
D. Charity management in Australia.

We all remember that first cry at the movies. Whether they are tears of joy or sadness, it’s quite astonishing that human emotion can be controlled by moving images on a screen. In fact, it all comes from a plan. But what about those heart- breaking stories... for kids? They seem not to sugarcoat the realities of the world.
Actually, many great kids’ movies filled with tragedy (悲剧) are purposefully meant to stir up kids’ strong feelings. According to Aristotle, tragedy aids us in facing life’s unsolvable issues through sensible (理智的) thinking. Therefore, the existence of tragedy in kids’ movies is to teach kids to handle, to understand and to heal. The hardest lesson for a child is how to deal with loss, especially if it’s sudden. The cartoon classic The Lion King tells the story of Simba, who experiences the loss of his father. Kids see themselves in Simba’s character. He has dreams. He has a desire to grow and be a part of a bigger world. But it is really heartbreaking to see the loss.
Why is a film like this so beloved when it makes kids cry? The lesson it teaches is to overcome hardships and to move forward. Hakuna Matata! Yes, the phrase from The Lion King is to teach kids it’s okay to move on from tragic loss and not to let it define you. It’s an important lesson we learned at a very young age. Sadness should not be ignored (忽视). It’s important to feel sad, and that is why these films are so great. In Dumbo, Charlotte’s Web and Bridge to Terabithia, we lose our beloved characters. This quite upsets kids, but it teaches them to accept sadness and makes something new out of it.
So, what is the message behind a sad kids’ movie? It’s meant to teach the audience, especially children, to gain their independence and how to free themselves from tragedy. It’s like a cushion (缓冲垫) that separates stories from reality. It helps children deal with sad feelings when they come for real, or at least find relief by saying Hakuna Matata.
28. Why does the author mention “first cry” in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To recommend a movie.
C. To support an argument. D. To explain the reason.
29. What does the underlined phrase “Hakuna Matata” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Viewing sadness as a treatment. B. Seeking knowledge to enrich life.
C. Challenging oneself with tragic losses. D. Heading forward without being caught.
30. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Children can find a way to hide sad feelings.
B. Children can learn to ignore sadness in tragedy.
C. Sad kids’ movies prepare children for tough times.
D. Sad kids’ movies help children to escape from reality.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Are Great Kids’ Movies So Sad?
B. What Is the Power of Great Kids’ Movies?
C. Life’s Hardest Lesson: How Kids’ Movies Inspire Us?
D. Moving Beyond Reality: What Sad Kids’ Movies Teach Us?
D
Everywhere I look, there are new buildings under construction. The neighborhoods that I knew as a boy, filled with beautiful old buildings, have mostly disappeared, and in their place, modern, high-rise buildings have appeared. There is good reason for this. Residents want all the conveniences of modern living. However, how can our children understand and maintain their cultural identity if we erase so much of the physical evidence of it?
The arguments for preserving historic buildings are not simply about an emotional attachment to the past. There are also good economic arguments in favour of preservation. The renovation (修缮) and preservation of historic districts can become an economic engine, drawing tourists and small businesses to the area. For example, in Dubai, the historic Al Bastikiya district draws thousands of tourists every year from all over the world. It also attracts local residents, eager to learn about their city's past.
Some have argued that historic preservation is too expensive, but many recent projects have demonstrated that this is not necessarily the case. In fact, renovation of an existing structure for adaptive reuse can cost about £40 per square metre less than even the most basic new construction, while preserving the beauty of the original building. And, although it is often claimed that old buildings have a more significant environmental footprint than new construction because they aren’t very energy efficient, architects and environmental experts maintain that the greenest building is the one that is already built. New construction almost always has a more serious environmental impact (影响) because it requires the use of all-new materials that must be transported, often over long distances, instead of recycled materials that are already on site. We recycle so many other things. We can and should recycle buildings, too.
Historic preservation is an option that opens many possibilities; demolition (拆毁), in contrast, is irreversible. Once these treasures are lost, they are lost forever, an important link in our heritage that can never be recovered.
32. What drives people to replace old buildings with new ones?
A. Their dislike of old buildings. B. Their pride in cultural identity.
C. Their concern about young generations. D. Their desire for modern comforts.
33. What does the example of Al Bastikiya show?
A. Historic renovation costs much money.
B. Local governments support small businesses.
C. Historic preservation brings economic benefits.
D. International tourism promises economic recovery.
34. What can be inferred about renovating old buildings from paragraph 3?
A. It uses green materials. B. It damages architectural beauty.
C. It reduces enviromental impact. D. It worries environmental experts.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards historic preservation?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Disapproving. D. Objective.

But let me review IT once more. So first of all, clothing, since it's still quite cold in march, you'll definitely need to wear a pair of good waterproof boots, make sure you don't come in your sports shoes as those will get wet very easily. Waterproof trousers and a good jacket are also advisable. Now i'm sure you remember that you don't need to bring protective gloves and big plastic bags as the school will provide you with those at the beach before we start cleaning during the event, there will be water and introduce available if you're thirsty. But if you think you might feel hungry while we're actually collecting the rubbish, then you'd Better bring some snacks with you, as there won't be any food at that time. After we finish, however, a light lunch will be offered, and we'll gather together and have a pleasant picnic on the beach. A
Leaves will soon make their gradual change to vivid colors of yellow, orange and red as we head through the fall months, but when you can usually expect peak color to arrive depends on where you live.
C 22. B 23. D

A 25. B 26. A 27. B

C
A 29. D 30. C 31. A
根据第一段中“We all remember that first cry at the movies. Whether they are tears of joy or sadness, it’s quite astonishing that human emotion can be controlled by moving images on a screen. In fact, it all comes from a plan. But what about those heart- breaking stories... for kids? 故选A项。
根据画线部分的上文“The lesson it teaches is to overcome hardships and to move forward. (它教给我们的是克服困难,继续前进)”和下文“Yes, the phrase from The Lion King is to teach kids it’s okay to move on from tragic loss and not to let it define you. (是的,《狮子王》里的那句话是要告诉孩子们,从悲剧中走出来是可以的,不要让它定义你)”可推知,画线部分Hakuna Matata !意为“向前走而不被困住”。故选D项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“It’s meant to teach the audience, especially children, to gain their independence and how to free themselves from tragedy. It’s like a cushion (缓冲垫) that separates stories from reality. It helps children deal with sad feelings when they come for real, or at least find relief by saying Hakuna Matata. (它的目的是教会观众,尤其是孩子,获得独立,如何从悲剧中解脱出来。它就像一个缓冲垫,把故事和现实分开。当孩子们真正来到这里时,它可以帮助他们处理悲伤的情绪,或者至少通过说“Hakuna Matata”来找到解脱)”可推知,这些电影让孩子们为艰难的时刻做好准备。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“But what about those heart-breaking stories… for kids? They seem not to sugarcoat the realities of the world. (但是那些让孩子们心碎的故事呢?他们似乎没有粉饰世界的现实)”可知,文章开篇提出了对于儿童电影中那些令人心碎的故事的疑问,然后围绕着儿童电影中存在悲剧元素展开论述,详细解释了许多儿童电影充满悲剧的原因。因此,文章是在探讨出色的儿童电影为何会有悲伤元素,A项“为什么出色的儿童电影如此悲伤”最符合文章主旨,适合作为标题。故选A项。

故填which/that。

故填and。
故填more dramatic。
根据时间状语Since its first show可知,此处强调过去的动作对现在造成的影响,应用现在完成时,其结构为“have/has +过去分词”,主语the appealing program是第三人称单数,所以用has won。故填has won。
help sb. do sth. 故填them。
