Passage 1
Snowstorms, lack of oxygen (氧气) and a freezing temperature of -20℃, Yue Kailang has experienced all these while climbing Mount Muztagata. The boy from Beijing finally reached the top of the mountain, at 7,546 meters, on July 29, 2022.
Yue was the youngest on the “Climate Action” climbing team. The goal of the team is to raise people’s awareness of global warming by climbing snow mountains.
“I loved nature when I was a kid. I often climbed mountains in Beijing. In recent years, more and more news reports have talked about the environment being polluted, and I feel quite upset about it,” said Yue.
Feeling necessary to do something, Yue took part in the “Climate Action” project. “Mount Muztagata is a good place to observe (观测) climate change because there are large areas of mountain glaciers (冰川),” saidYue. “I was shocked when I saw the snow line was rising every single day—the snow melts (融化) so fast that it can be seen with the naked eye! There is also a river formed by the melting snow. We can hear the loud sound of the flowing water.”
On the way to the top of the mountain, Yue also collected snow samples (样品), which were part of the project’s tasks. The samples will be given to scientists to study how air pollution and microbes (微生物) are causing the melting.

Passage 4
阅读下面短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Dear Wang Ling,
How are you? Last time you said you have no idea what you should do when you are under pressure and have worries. One good way that many students in my country find helpful is using a worry box. Let me explain how to make and use one.
Try using a worry box
◆ Make a special box
Use colorful things and pictures to make your worry box.
Here is a picture of my worry-eating monster (怪兽) box!
◆ Write down your worries
Take some pieces of paper and write down your worries.
◆ Rate (评价) your worries and keep them in the box
If you like, place each worry on a scale (等级) from 1 to 10. 1 means “a little worried” and 10 means “the most worried”. For example, today I put two worries into the box. I rated “losing my new bike” as a 7 and “getting bad grades in the math exam” as a 5.
◆ Talk it out
Be sure to make some time every day or week to talk about your worries with your parents together. You can find ways to deal with them.
Remember, it’s not healthy to carry worries around in your head. The worry box provides a good place to “share” your worries. By using it you’ll learn to deal with your worries.
Take care!
Yours,
Linda

When I said “me-time”, I only meant having an hour of quietness, such as listening to music, reading a book, or watching a movie, without being troubled by my kids.
Soon I had a chance to travel to a new country all by myself! My husband and kids would follow later.
Now, I am alone in an apartment. Finally, I can do whatever I want and keep the house clean and tidy. I am happy because I can read my favourite books and do what I want to do.
But gradually, I feel a little lonely (孤独的). I miss my kids and my husband. I feel something in me is missing. Now I realize that making time for myself doesn’t mean being away from those I love. I can still have “me-time” even if the kids are around.

Dan Mancina is an excellent skateboarder. He is blind (失明的), but he is famous for sharing videos of his skating online. In life, he has a lot of fans and they would like to watch his videos.
Dan started skating at the age of 7, and he had a growing love for the sport when he was 13 years old. He said it could help him show himself much better. Unluckily, Dan was ill and almost completely blind at the age of 22. He was really sad and said, “I thought my skating life came to an end.” Later he had to stop skating.
In March 2022, he started skating again. He made short videos of skating and put them online. Because of those videos, Dan met a new group of people who enjoyed skating. It gave him enough confidence to return to the sport. “I know I can be the same person and can still do the things that I love. I just have to do them in a different way,” Dan said.
Dan wants to open a special park for blind skateboarders in his city. “Some people think it is not possible for the blind to skate, but I think they can do it successfully. Don’t let other people decide what you can and can’t do. You know, it is all up to you,” Dan said.

Take care!
Yours,
Linda

About 20 minutes later, when I was walking upstairs, I heard Kevin crying in his room. I knocked on the door and asked, “Kevin, do you want to talk with me?”
There was no answer. I tried again. Still, nothing happened. I took a piece of paper and wrote, “If you don’t want to talk, we can write notes to each other.” Then I slipped (悄悄塞) it under the door.
Half an hour later, I was still sitting outside his door. Then, a note slipped out from under the door. When I read it, I couldn’t help crying. It said, “Nobody in this family loves me. I am not the youngest nor the oldest, and I am not the smartest. Tommy thinks I am too weak, and Dad wishes he had another Kevin who is better at basketball. You’re never around to even notice me.” He was right about my part. Feeling sorry for him, I wrote back, “Kevin, I do love you, and everyone in this family loves you.”
I could hear him crying softly. A few minutes later, another note with “Thanks!” slipped out.

Passage 6
After I became a mother, I couldn’t remember the last time I had time for myself. Even my simple hobby of reading books became a thing of the past. I spent all my time taking care of the family, doing chores, and of course, working to make a living. I was really tired and hoped for “me-time”.

After hours in the warm sun, he fell asleep on his small boat. When he woke up, the sky was dark. Suddenly, the wind blew strongly and strong ocean currents (洋流) pushed his boat far from the coast. Passage 11
Hi, boys and girls! I’m Peter. My mum says every happy child needs a hobby. Importantly, hobbies help us relax. As a teenage boy, my hobby is watching the night sky. It’s quiet at night. I dream of becoming an astronaut! The stars inspire me to imagine distant (遥远的) worlds. My sister plays the piano. It’s rather loud sometimes, but she loves it and she says playing it calms her down.
Some hobbies are unusual. My friend Jim collects rocks. He spends hours cleaning and organizing (整理) them. Everywhere he goes, he looks for interesting ones. It’s relaxing for him. His mum is angry because his room is full of rocks. She told him, “You must stop collecting!” But surprisingly, she now allows him to keep a few special rocks because she sees it makes him happy.
My mum’s friend has a rather strange hobby. She collects salt and pepper shakers (瓶), but only ones about bears. Some have bear pictures, others are shaped (有……形状的) like bears. They look old-fashioned, like things from long ago. She feels peaceful when she organizes them.
Jim’s rocks inspire him to learn about Earth. Watching my sister, Jim and my mum’s friend, I understand: hobbies are special ways to find joy. They help us relax while doing what we love. My mum is quite right.

How do you spend your free time? What do you like to do? Here are some of our likes.
My name is Tina. My favourite hobby is singing. I started singing at 3. Four years later, my mom sent me to the Children’s Palace to learn music. I won many competition awards. I think the best thing in life is sitting in the sun, listening to music and singing along.
One of my friends, Victor, likes collecting stamps. He has stamps from England, Canada, China and more. On his birthday, people always give him stamps. His favourite stamps are from France—he has almost all from 1954 to 2004, but needed a 1974 special edition. Victor also has a French pen friend, Phillip. Once Phillip’s mother gave Phillip an old green stamp. When Victor got Phillip’s letter, he was surprised: the stamp on the envelope was the 1974 special one! He was very happy.
Another friend, Nancy, loves reading most. When she was little, she read comic books; now she likes fiction. “Reading is fun. My favourite fiction is Pride and Prejudice—it gives knowledge and teaches the right attitude toward life. Reading makes my life complete. I’ll keep reading,” Nancy says.
