Passage 2
Xia Boyu: A Fearless Mountaineer
Xia Boyu is a well-known Chinese mountain climber. His story passes on the spirit of courage and perseverance, touching the hearts of many people.
In 1975, at the age of 26, Xia attempted to climb Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest mountain. Unfortunately, terrible weather prevented him from reaching the top. During the climb, a teammate suddenly fell into a dangerous situation due to the cold. Xia selflessly gave his sleeping bag to the teammate. As a consequence, his own legs were severely frozen after hours of exposure to the extreme cold. Later, doctors had to remove both of his legs to save his life.
Though Xia was deeply sad after the operation (手术), he didn’t give up his hope of climbing Mount Qomolangma. He still wanted to conquer (征服) the high mountain. With the help of artificial legs, he began to train seriously. Every day, he got up early to go running, spent hours cycling, and did a lot of exercises to build up his body. The artificial legs often caused pain, making each step difficult, yet he persisted for many years.
Over the years, Xia made four more attempts. Each time, he faced not only strong winds and heavy snow but also low oxygen levels that made breathing hard. But he never quit, always encouraging himself with the dream in mind. Finally, in 2018, when he was 69, he succeeded in standing on the summit of Mount Qomolangma. Looking at the beautiful view below, he burst into tears of joy.

Passage 3
Dear Sun Meng,
In your last e-mail, you asked me how to deal with stress and worries. One good way that many students in my country find helpful is using a worry box. Let me explain how to make and use one.
Try using a worry box
Make a special box
Use colourful things and pictures to make your worry box. Here is a picture of my worry-eating monster (怪兽) box!
Write down your worries
Take some pieces of paper and write down your worries.
Rate (评价) your worries and store them in the box
If you like, place each worry on a scale (等级) from 1 to 10. 1 means “a little worried” and 10 means “the most worried”. For example, today I put two worries into the box. I rated “losing my new bike” 7 and “worrying about the math exam” 4.
Talk it out
Make sure to make some time every day or every week to talk about your worries with your parents. Together, you can find ways to deal with them.
Remember, it’s not healthy to carry worries around in your head. The worry box provides a safe place to “share” your worries. By using it, you’ll learn to deal with your worries.
Take care!
Yours,
Anna

Passage 4
Dear Sue,
I’ve been acting strangely and one of my friends started to get really worried about it, so she asked me to take a depression quiz (抑郁测试) online. All six of the quizzes said I had depression. I’m really scared and I don’t know what to do. I can’t tell anyone because she/he won’t really care. I am scared and lonely. What should I do? Thanks for helping.
Kate
Dear Kate,
There are a number of reasons for your depression and the most important thing you can do now is to see a doctor. If you cannot do that through your family, go to the school doctor and ask for help.
Before you go, make a list of your symptoms (症状). If you understand the reasons for your feelings and behaviour, you can begin to find out good solutions. And you should not do that again.
Your friend is worried about you, and that friend can help you make a full list of symptoms and questions for the doctor. I’m sure you can find an adult. The adult should care about your problem. I hope my suggestions will help you a lot.

1. 根据文章第二段“Xia selflessly gave his sleeping bag to the teammate. As a consequence, his own legs were severely frozen after hours of exposure to the extreme cold. Later, doctors had to remove both of his legs to save his life.”
2. 根据第三段“The artificial legs often caused pain, making each step difficult, yet he persisted for many years.”
3. 根据第三段“Every day, he got up early to go running, spent hours cycling, and did a lot of exercises to build up his body. The artificial legs often caused pain, making each step difficult, yet he persisted for many years.”
4. 根据文章最后一段“Xia Boyu’s story shows us that no matter how difficult life gets, we should keep pursuing our dreams. He is a true hero, and we can all take valuable lessons from him.”
Take care!
Yours,
Anna

One cold winter night last week, when John and his parents used charcoal (木炭) to keep warm, they closed all the doors and windows of the room. However, before going to bed, John suddenly felt unwell. He felt dizzy (头晕) and had difficulty breathing. When he tried to talk with his parents, he found that they couldn’t answer him. At that time, John thought they might suffer from carbon monoxide poisoning (一氧化碳中毒), and he became nervous. But then he knew he had to keep calm. At first, he opened the windows and doors to let the fresh air in. Then he picked up his father’s phone to call 120. While he was waiting for the doctors, he shouted to neighbors aloud for help. The neighbors ran over at once and moved his parents outside the house together. Finally, John and his parents were sent to the hospital and saved in time.
“Were you afraid at that moment?” a reporter asked. “In fact, I was. But our school has lessons about safety every week, and our teachers often teach us what to do when we are in danger. Conquering Nature: The Story of the Trans-Siberian Railway
Building the Trans-Siberian Railway was one of the greatest challenges in history. It is the longest railway in the world, stretching about 9,289 kilometres from Moscow to Vladivostok. The project began in 1891 and took over 25 years to complete.
Workers faced terrible conditions along the way. They had to build tracks through frozen ground, deep forests, and high mountains. In winter, temperatures dropped to -50°C, making it almost impossible to work outside. Many workers fell ill or died from cold and hard labour.
However, the Russian people were determined to complete the railway. They built bridges across huge rivers like the Ob and the Yenisei. They dug tunnels through the Ural Mountains. Bit by bit, they pushed forward despite all the difficulties.
