B I entered a store for the first time in Seville, Spain. After searching each aisle (通道) twice, I approached the cashier and asked him in Spanish where I could find milk. He responded in Spanish, asking which type. My mind went empty, and I couldn’t find suitable Spanish words. I was embarrassed. Of course, it wasn’t the only time I felt foolish here in Spain. On our third night in Seville, my younger daughter said, “I miss Dad. I want to go home!” Perhaps I didn’t make the right decision moving to Spain with my daughters for three months. While I dealt with the girls’ schoolwork, I avoided the bigger question: What was behind my wish to do this? I was burned out after over ten years of balancing motherhood with a high-pressure law career. I felt guilty (内疚的) at work when I was away from my daughters. My life felt like a series of predictable steps: university, law school, bar exam, marriage, and kids. I feared that if I didn’t change course now, my future would be stuck in a boring life. The capital of the Andalusia region, Seville, drew me in, which has a walkable historic center. I rented an apartment and it became our new home. Each morning, after breakfast, we walked through the alleys (小巷) to school. In medieval times, Seville’s streets were laid out to protect the city against invaders (侵略者). After a few weeks, I no longer felt lost. As we got closer to school, I picked up the local newspaper from a paperboy, pretending to read more than I actually could. After two months in Seville, I was stopped on the street by an older couple. They asked me in Spanish how to get to a popular store. Without thinking twice, I told them in Spanish the right way. I was mistaken for a local! 4. Why did the author feel embarrassed when shopping in Spain? A. She mixed up different types of milk. B. She couldn’t describe the milk type. C. She didn’t have enough cash for the milk. D. She failed to understand the cashier’s words. 5. What made the author doubt her decision to move to Spain? A. Her daughter’s wish to go home. B. Her difficulty buying daily items. C. Her search for a suitable apartment. D. Her daughter’s poor performance at school. 6. What pushed the author to move to Spain? A. Her plan to start a new career there. B. Her boredom with her everyday life. C. Her interest in Spain’s long and rich history. D. Her need to support her daughters’ education. 7. What significant change did the author notice in herself in Seville? A. She learned a lot about local history. B. She started to work as a guide for tourists. C. She had no trouble reading the local newspaper. D. She grew confident in speaking Spanish daily. C Whether you go to college at Boise State University or can’t locate Boise on a map, the Boise State Broncos football team have made a name for themselves nationwide due to one special feature: the blue artificial turf The idea to build a blue football field came from Gene Bleymaier, Boise State’s athletic director from 1982 to 2011. While flying in 1986, he realized he didn’t want to spend $750,000on another boring green field. “What can I do to make Boise State stand out against other teams?” he wondered. As he flew over, he started to wonder what a blue field would look like. From then on, Bleymaier tried to find out if a blue field would be possible, and eventually, John Keiser, Boise State’s president at the time, decided to go with blue. The blue turf marked the first non-green artificial football field in the country. On Nov. 10, 2009, the blue turf got an official trademark (商标) registration, meaning that Boise State owns the rights to any colored field. Any school wanting to lay a non-green football field has to get it approved by Boise State first. “When people think of a blue field, we want them to connect that with Boise State,” said Spencer Jahn, Boise State’s trademark licensing specialist. The unique field, known as “The Blue”, quickly got national popularity. However, not all the attention was positive. Some thought that geese (鹅) would mistake the field for a lake and be injured or killed trying to jump in, and that the blue uniforms gave the Broncos an unfair advantage because they “blended in (融入).” Despite this, The Blue has become famous in the world of college football, attracting about17,000 visitors from all 50 states and 37 countries last year. The Broncos have a winning record of 108-33 in the first 20 years of its existence and The Blue has been named Best Attraction for Sports Fans in USA TODAY for the past two years in a row. 8. Why did Gene Bleymaier want a blue football field? A. To make a name for himself. B. To make the Broncos unique. C. To save money on building the field. D. To bet with the university’s president. 9. What does the underlined word “approved” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Checked. B. Designed. C. Marked. D. Permitted. 10. What was the attitude of the people mentioned in paragraph 5 towards The Blue? A. Doubtful. B. Unclear. C. Satisfied. D. Curious. 11. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Boise State has tried to attract visitors. B. The Blue has been improved over the years. C. The Broncos won many games in one year. D. The Blue brought great success to Boise State. D Contagious yawning (传染性哈欠) has long been seen in warm-blooded animals: besides us, they include chimps, lions and wolves. But Elisabetta Palagi, a scientist from the University of Pisa, says it has been proven in a cold-blooded species for the first time. Palagi and her team set out to confirm if fish yawn and if it’s contagious. They chose zebrafish, a common freshwater fish, raised at home, and observed 18 zebrafish in the lab. The fish usually breathed by quickly opening and closing their mouth, but sometimes they opened their mouth slowly. They also stretched (使变大) it wide and then closed it suddenly. This seemed to mimic what scientists usually describe in other animals as yawning. The researchers noted many differences between a fish’s normal breathing and a yawn. For example, the fish opened their mouth wider during a yawn than when simply breathing. And about half the time, a yawning fish also stretched its body. This is “very interesting,” Palagi says, and something “we did not expect to find”. The team trained an AI model to recognize these yawning features. After feeding it video screenshots (屏幕截图), the AI could tell yawns from normal breathing, just like the researchers. Next, they showed zebrafish two types of videos: one of a yawning zebrafish and the other of one breathing normally. Tested many times on many fish, the results showed fish were more than twice as likely to yawn when watching yawning videos — proving contagious yawning. Also, lab fish that yawned in response often changed swimming direction; since wild zebrafish swim in large groups, researchers think this helps them coordinate (协调) their movements. Not everyone is buying it. Cait Newport, a biologist from the University of Oxford, says that it’s still unclear why fish would yawn together. She notes the directional change doesn’t prove that fish in the wild would use yawning to coordinate their movements. Noam Miller, a psychologist at Canada’s Wilfrid Laurier University, points out that we need to know if fish yawn contagiously for the same reasons as warm-blooded animals. Palagi says why animals yawn is still an open question, but zebrafish are perfect for further study. “This study opens the floodgates for many more studies to come.” 12. What does the underlined word “mimic” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Hide. B. Speed. C. Point out. D. Look like. 13. What did the researchers need to do during the study? A. Tell zebrafish’s yawns from their normal breathing. B. Compare home-raised zebrafish to wild zebrafish. C. Let zebrafish see some videos of human yawning. D. Use an AI model to control videos of zebrafish. 14. What did the researchers find? A. Wild zebrafish changed direction after yawning. B. Zebrafish yawned more than warm-blooded species. C. Zebrafish yawned when seeing other fish yawn in videos. D. Contagious yawning helped zebrafish find food in groups. 15. What is Cait Newport’s attitude towards the research? A. Curious. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear. Keep your brain healthy and sharp If you often feel forgetful and confused, it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong with you. ____16____ Luckily, there are lots you can do to keep your brain in tip-top condition. B 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第一段“He responded in Spanish, asking which type. My mind went empty, and I couldn’t find suitable Spanish words. I was embarrassed. (他用西班牙语回应问我要哪种。我脑子一片空白,想不出合适的西班牙语单词。我很尴尬)”可知,作者因无法描述牛奶种类而尴尬。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“On our third night in Seville, my younger daughter said, “I miss Dad. I want to go home!” Perhaps I didn’t make the right decision moving to Spain with my daughters for three months. (在塞维利亚的第三个晚上,我的小女儿说:“我想念爸爸。我想回家!”也许带女儿们来西班牙住三个月的决定是错误的)”可知,女儿想回家的愿望让作者质疑自己的决定。故选A。 根据第三段“I was burned out after over ten years of balancing motherhood with a high-pressure law career. I felt guilty (内疚的) at work when I was away from my daughters. My life felt like a series of predictable steps: university, law school, bar exam, marriage, and kids. I feared that if I didn’t change course now, my future would be stuck in a boring life. (在平衡了十多年的母亲身份和高压的法律职业后,我精疲力竭。当我离开女儿们时,我在工作中感到内疚。我的生活感觉就像一系列可预测的步骤:大学、法学院、律师考试、婚姻和孩子。我担心,如果我现在不改变方向,我的未来将陷入枯燥的生活)”可知,作者对日常生活的厌倦促使作者移居西班牙。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“They asked me in Spanish how to get to a popular store. Without thinking twice, I told them in Spanish the right way. I was mistaken for a local! (他们用西班牙语问我怎么去一家热门商店,我不假思索用西班牙语告诉了他们正确路线,我被当成了当地人)”可知,作者可以不假思索地用西班牙语表达,由此可推测,作者日常说西班牙语变得自信了。故选D。 C Whether you go to college at Boise State University or can’t locate Boise on a map, the Boise State Broncos football team have made a name for themselves nationwide due to one special feature: the blue artificial turf The idea to build a blue football field came from Gene Bleymaier, Boise State’s athletic director from 1982 to 2011. B 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第二段““What can I do to make Boise State stand out against other teams?” he wondered. (“我该怎么做才能让博伊西州立大学与众不同?”他想知道)”可知,他想要一个蓝色足球场是为了让博伊西州立大学队与众不同。故选B。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段“On Nov. 10, 2009, the blue turf got an official trademark (商标) registration, meaning that Boise State owns the rights to any colored field. Any school wanting to lay a non-green football field has to get it approved by Boise State first. (2009年11月10日,蓝色草坪获得了官方商标注册,这意味着博伊西州拥有任何彩色场地的权利。任何想要铺设非绿色足球场的学校都必须先得到博伊西州立大学approved)”可知,博伊西州拥有任何彩色场地的权利,所以任何学校想要铺设非绿色足球场,都必须先得到博伊西州立大学的许可,approved意为“允许、许可”,与permitted意思相近。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“Some thought that geese (鹅) would mistake the field for a lake and be injured or killed trying to jump in, and that the blue uniforms gave the Broncos an unfair advantage because they “blended in (融入).”(有人认为鹅会把田野误认为是湖泊,在试图跳进去时会受伤或死亡,而蓝色制服给了野马队不公平的优势,因为它们“融入了湖中”)”可知,人们对蓝色球场的态度是怀疑的。故选A。 根据最后一段“The Broncos have a winning record of 108-33 in the first 20 years of its existence and The Blue has been named Best Attraction for Sports Fans in USA TODAY for the past two years in a row. (野马队在成立后的前20年里以108胜33负的战绩获胜,而“蓝色球场”连续两年被评为《今日美国》体育迷的最佳景点)”可知,蓝色球场为学校带来了巨大成功。故选D。 D Contagious yawning (传染性哈欠) has long been seen in warm-blooded animals: besides us, they include chimps, lions and wolves. A. Curious. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear. D 13. A 14. C 15. 根据第二段“The fish usually breathed by quickly opening and closing their mouth, but sometimes they opened their mouth slowly. They also stretched (使变大) it wide and then closed it suddenly. This seemed to mimic what scientists usually describe in other animals as yawning.(这些鱼通常通过快速张合嘴巴来呼吸,但有时它们会缓慢地张开嘴,还会把嘴张得很大,随后猛地闭上。这一行为似乎mimic科学家在其他动物身上所说的打哈欠。)”可知,这里描述这些鱼的动作就像打哈欠一样,所以猜测mimic的意思是“看起来像、模仿”。故选D项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“After feeding it video screenshots (屏幕截图), the AI could tell yawns from normal breathing, just like the researchers.(在输入视频截图后,人工智能能够像研究人员一样区分哈欠和正常呼吸。)” 故选A项。 根据第五段“Tested many times on many fish, the results showed fish were more than twice as likely to yawn when watching yawning videos — proving contagious yawning.(经过多次对多条鱼的测试,结果显示斑马鱼观看打哈欠视频时,打哈欠的概率高出两倍多,证明了哈欠具有传染性。)” 根据第六段“Not everyone is buying it. Cait Newport, a biologist from the University of Oxford, says that it’s still unclear why fish would yawn together. She notes the directional change doesn’t prove that fish in the wild would use yawning to coordinate their movements.(并非所有人都认同这一观点。牛津大学生物学家Cait Newport 表示,鱼类为何会集体打哈欠目前仍无定论。她指出,这种方向上的变化,并不能证明野生鱼类会借助打哈欠来协调自身的游动。)”可知,Cait Newport对该研究结论持怀疑态度。故选B项。 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Keep your brain healthy and sharp If you often feel forgetful and confused, it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong with you. ____16____ Luckily, there are lots you can do to keep your brain in tip-top condition.
