(25-26九年级上·湖北孝感·期末)阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
Hanchuan, located in Hubei Province, is known for its lakes, where lotus roots are fresh and white. When Li Ming was a little boy here, his grandmother would often cook a special dish for the family—Lotus Root and Pork Rib Soup. To Li Ming, the soft, sweet taste of the soup was like the special taste of home. It is the warmest feeling he will never forget.
Years later, Li Ming went to live in London. One snowy afternoon, missing his hometown deeply, he decided to make the soup himself. He bought pork ribs, lotus roots, some ginger (姜) and green onions. First, he washed one big lotus root, cut it into thick pieces, and got some ginger ready. Next, he boiled the ribs to clean them. Then, he placed them in a pot with fresh water, added lotus root and ginger, and let it cook slowly for a long time. At last, he put a little salt and some cut green onions on the top. When he took the first sip (啜), his grandmother’s smile and the lakeside winds of his hometown all came back to him.
Now, Li Ming sometimes makes this soup for his friends in London. He is excited and proud to find that in other countries, some restaurants even serve “Hubei Lotus Root Soup”. Though it may taste a little different far from home, the dish brings a part of Hubei to people around the world. To Li Ming, this soup is more than just food—it’s a warm connection to his home, always reminding him of who he is and where he comes from.
1.On the snowy afternoon, Li Ming decided to make the soup because he was deeply. (5个词以内, 2分)

From Tradition to the Modern
During the Dragon Boat Festival, Chinese always put mugwort leaves on doors or windows to make the air fresh and keep flies and other insects away. Mugwort, a kind of plant, is highly valued for its medical use in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Chinese have been making use of herbs (草药) like mugwort to help people improve health or treat illness for thousands of years.
Nowadays, we are seeing more interest in TCM especially among the young. Influenced by TCM ideas, some young people stop having icy drinks. They accept hot Chinese herbal tea, instead. When people feel ill, some choose to go to TCM hospitals and clinics for treatment. With the spread of TCM, some schools start courses about it. For example, students learn to make joss sticks (线香) with herbs in class. More TCM programs appear on TV and the Internet, which can help people form better living habits.
In fact, the ideas of Traditional Chinese Medicine are everywhere around us. Following the natural rules can make us healthier. As an old saying goes, “Early to bed, early to rise.” TCM also pays more attention to the balance of diet. Different coloured foods are friendly to different parts of the body. White food is good for lungs, red for heart... If a body is like a tree, TCM focuses on its root (根). It aims at keeping the body and mind in harmony (和谐).

Filial piety (孝), or “xiào” in Chinese, is one of the most important traditional values. It means respecting, loving, and taking care of our parents and older family members. For thousands of years, Chinese people have believed that family is of great importance.
The Chinese character “xiào” is made up of two parts. The top part is the character “lao”, which means old. It stands for our parents or grandparents, the elders in our family. The lower part is the character “zi”, which means “son” or “child”. When we put these two parts together, it shows a picture of a child supporting an elder.
In old stories, people showed filial piety in many ways. For example, there’s a story about a boy. During cold winter nights, he warmed his father’s bed with his own body before his father went to sleep. In summer, he fanned his father’s pillow (枕头) to make it cool. These stories teach us that showing love doesn’t need big actions—small acts matter a lot.
Filial piety helps us become better people. When we care for our parents, we understand how much they’ve done for us. It makes our families happier and stronger. As middle school students, we can show our filial piety by starting small. A smile, a kind word, or a helping hand—these simple actions can show our love and keep this beautiful tradition alive.

These days, cultural and creative dolls (文创玩偶) are very popular. They carry special meanings and show the culture of the places they come from.
In Wuhan, Hubei, there is a lovely cultural and creative doll—a little bird with garlic (蒜) on its head. Its name is “Suan Niao”, sounding like “Suan Liao” in the Wuhan dialect (方言). It means “Don’t worry about it and let it go.” It tells everyone to get along well with each other. On bus No.603 in Wuhan, there are “Suan Niao” dolls hanging on the glass door of the driver’s room. When passengers quarrel (争吵), the driver will take down the doll and press (按) it. It will make a funny “Suan Liao, Suan Liao” sound. The passengers will smile when they hear it.

A well-known 75-year Harvard study shows that children who do chores (家务) can become more independent and successful when they grow up.
When children do chores in their spare time, they can get a sense of achievement because they can see the results soon after finishing the chores. Especially when their parents thank them and tell them they’ve made the day easier, they will know they are useful and helpful. This experience can also encourage children to be more active outside of the family.
What’s more, they will learn that everyone should do chores. It helps to stop them from being spoiled (惯坏的). Life doesn’t simply offer everything on a plate. You need to work hard to get what you want.
Besides, chores teach kids to manage their time well. Doing chores from a young age helps children to get used to them. Children learn to include them in their day with all other activities such as studies and play. Time management is a useful skill, too. When they grow up, they need to balance (平衡) different parts of their life like work and family.
Chores also teach important life skills. Chores are usually related to household (家务的) tasks—washing dishes, cleaning the floor, making the bed, etc. These are all life skills that children need to develop. The only way to learn is by doing.
Chores aren’t just about keeping the house clean. They are life lessons.

(2026·湖北十堰·一模)Last Saturday, I joined the city park volunteer team with my classmates. The sun was shining brightly, and we arrived at Green Lake Park early in the morning, excited to help. A park worker welcomed us and gave us tasks: some would clean the paths, some guide visitors, and my group was asked to collect litter near the lake.
Wearing red volunteer hats, we started working. At first, I saw a plastic bottle stuck in the plants. It was hard to reach, but I carefully pulled it out. My friend Li Hua found a bag of snacks left on a bench and threw it into the correct trash bin. After working for several hours, we were tired but happy.
Besides, preventing bad behaviors is also one of our activities. As we worked, we noticed some kids trying to feed the ducks with bread. We walked over gently and told them, “Ducks can get sick from too much bread. Let’s protect them together!” The kids nodded and said sorry, which made us feel proud.
By noon, the park looked cleaner, and the sky seemed bluer. We sat on the grass, smiling happily. I realized small actions can make a big difference. Being a volunteer isn’t just about working, it’s about caring for others and our environment. When we left, the park felt like a place where everyone shared responsibility.
This experience taught me that giving is also a form of harvest. I hope more people will join us, making our city parks not only beautiful but also full of love and warmth.

There are many different ways that people can take part in World Cleanup Day. For example, some people might take part in local cleanup events organized by community groups. Some may organize the cleanup events and invite friends and family members to join them.
In my opinion, no matter how people choose to join in, the most important thing is that they are taking action to help protect the environment. By cleaning up litter and pollution, they can make a real difference in the health of their local communities and even the planet as a whole.

Winters are cold in northern British Columbia, Canada. That’s one reason why two girls worried about a number of homeless cats in their town.
“My dad first saw this big cat problem…and he knew a man who was troubled by cats,” said Vivienne Thompson. Vivienne and her friend Catrina Vanderwolf learnt that the man wasn’t happy about all the cats living around his home. They offered to help.
Each day after school all winter long, the girls walked two miles to feed the cats. “We could see all their footprints in the snow and at first couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t let us get close to them,” explained the girls.
They contacted (联系) Valerie Ingram at the Lakes Animal Friendship Society. She told them that the cats are “feral”. They belong to no one. Feral cats have little or no contact with humans their whole lives. The large group of homeless cats probably started with two stray (走失的) cats who gave birth to some baby cats. Those baby cats grew up and had their babies, and before long, there were a number of homeless cats.
To get this group of cats under control, the cats would need neuter operations (绝育手术) so that they could no longer have babies. Vivienne and Catrina shared what they learnt with their teachers and other students—and a project (项目) began! Grassy Plains School started raising money to pay for the cats’ operations. Before long, local organizations agreed to help. Volunteers spent months catching the cats. Finally, they neutered all the cats and returned them to the group.
“We were so happy to be a part of helping, to get to know the cats, to see only happy cats and a happy man who feeds them,” said Vivienne and Catrina.

Last Saturday, I joined the city park volunteer team with my classmates.
Being a volunteer isn’t just about working; it’s about caring for others and our environment. When we left, the park felt like a place where everyone shared responsibility.
This experience taught me that giving is also a form of harvest. I hope more people will join us, making our city parks not only beautiful but also full of love and warmth.

Do you know that plants can “talk” to each other? Scientists have found that plants have their own ways of communicating, especially when they are in danger.
For example, when insects start eating a plant’s leaves, the plant can send out special chemicals (化学物质) into the air. These chemicals act like a warning signal (信号). Other plants nearby can “smell” this signal. Once they get the message, they begin to produce chemicals that make their leaves taste bad or are even harmful to insects. This helps them prepare for the coming danger before it arrives.
Besides sending warnings, plants can also communicate through their roots (根). They use an underground network of fungi (真菌). This network connects the roots of different plants. Scientists call this “wood wide web.” Through it, plants can share water, food, and information. For example, a big tree might send food through the network to a small baby plant that doesn’t get enough sunlight.
These discoveries change the way we think about plants. They are not as quiet as we once believed. They are active, social, and always ready to help each other out.

It’s hard to imagine a world without trees because trees are very important to life on Earth.
Trees play an important role on our planet. They make oxygen (氧气) for us to breathe and help clear the air. They provide homes and food for animals.
Trees also give us places to relax and make us feel better. It feels great to have a picnic under trees or take a walk in the woods. Artists often find inspiration (灵感) in trees. US poet Joyce Kilmer wrote, “I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree.” Dutch artist Piet Mondrian painted many trees because he loved their patterns.
Old trees are special landmarks (地标) and help people remember their past, CGTN noted. Many people might remember a tree from their childhood which makes them miss their hometown.
Ancient trees are also part of our culture. They have lived for hundreds or even thousands of years and have seen much of history. Ma Yuanxin, who works at a research institute in Beijing, said old trees can tell us stories about the past. In Beijing, there are many ancient cypress trees, each with its own story.
Since trees are so wonderful, British writer Matt Haig gives the advice in his book Reasons to Stay Alive: “Look at trees. Be near trees. Plant trees.”

Cinder the Store Cat
The most loved “worker” at a local store isn’t a girl or a boy—it’s a cute cat named Cinder! Let’s hear her story.
A while ago, the store had a mouse problem. Mice came in with the birdseed, so a shop clerk brought his cat Lewis to help. Lewis was great at catching mice. What’s more, he made everyone happy—clerks smiled more, and customers loved seeing him. Soon, Lewis became a part of the store.
But when his owner retired (退休), Lewis left too. The store team knew they needed another cat friend, so they saved Cinder from an animal shelter. Sometimes, they called her Cinderella.
Cinder isn’t a shy house cat. The store gives her just the right mix of safety and freedom. She walks around to greet customers, lies on the counter to take naps, and even plays under shopping carts. But if she wants to be alone, she’ll quietly walk away. To keep her safe, the team put a tracker in her collar (项圈). They also hung signs to tell visitors there’s a cat around.
Cinder has many fans. For them, looking for Cinder is the first thing to do when they enter the store. They hope she’ll say “hi” before they start shopping. Some people even stop by just to pet her—they don’t need to buy anything at all!

Chinese traditions are making a difference to our modern life.

What do you usually do to relax after a busy week’s work? Do you want to go swimming or play computer games? Learning something about calligraphy (书法) may be a fantastic idea. Nowadays, a growing number of people are taking up calligraphy—a traditional art form with a long history.
Ma Huiyan works in Shanghai. She became interested in calligraphy in 2020 as a way to kill time. “I am not a calligrapher, so I don’t care much about the skills. I spend one or two hours writing Chinese calligraphy after work every day. It brings me great joy,” said Ma. “Every time I finish a piece of work, I have a strong sense of achievement.”

Fang Jiangxun is a university teacher and he has been teaching calligraphy courses for about six years. Some of his students posted his course videos online and they are popular among millions of people in China. “We can learn calligraphy at any age. Writing calligraphy can make us feel good by using both our hands and brains.”

World Cleanup Day is a special day when people come together to clean up the environment. It started in 2018 and fell on the third Saturday in September. But since 2024, it has been changed to be held on September 20th every year.
By cleaning up litter and pollution, they can make a difference to our local communities and the planet. What’s more, it’s free and fun.
There are many different kinds of activities that people can do on World Cleanup Day. Some people might pick up litter in their local parks or neighborhoods. Some work on cleaning up rivers or beaches. Others might organize cleanup activities in the communities, like giving speeches, and even help to protect wildlife, prevent water pollution, and keep communities safe and healthy.

Do you think you are a happy child? What makes a boy or a girl happy? As the saying goes, a happy child always has a hobby. We know sayings are wise and true.
Do you have a hobby? Many people have hobbies. Albert Einstein had a hobby. He played the violin very well. This hobby made the great scientist happy and helped him work better. Some great players have hobbies too. One of them likes collecting cute little dolls and they make her very happy. As for me, collecting stamps is my hobby. It makes me very happy.
Hobbies bring people together and help them become friends. I have a friend called Jenny and she’s from the UK. She likes collecting stamps too. Because of stamps, we got to know each other on the Internet. We like to talk about stamps. Jenny says she is interested in the stories behind each stamp. She often asks me about Chinese stamps and shows some of them to me. Now we are very good friends.
Today, people send emails to each other. They don’t use stamps often. But Jenny and I still use stamps. This hobby helps us learn many things. This hobby helps us learn about history, culture and important events through these small, colorful pieces of paper. It may take the buddies time to do many reading activities, but it’s a wonderful experience. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also helps you have a better understanding of the books.
It is all right to have students take part in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates, but schools usually pair up (配对) older students with younger ones. Yucai School started such a program in 2022 and has achieved great success.
Thanks to the two-year program, many students from younger to older readers have learned a lot. For example, they learned to be kind and patient when they listened to each other. This experience also makes students get a chance to practice lifelong skills such as communicating with others. A student called Davis said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful.

Perhaps one of the trees with “funny” leaves you first learned about in primary school is the ginkgo tree (银杏树). As one of the oldest kinds of trees still alive, the ginkgo is unique (独特的) in many ways.
The ginkgo tree, also known as the maidenhair tree, has a history of 345 million years in China. That is why it is also called “the panda of the plant world”. The ginkgo tree can keep alive in different kinds of environments, so it is a kind of long-lived tree. According to Guinness World Records, an over 5,000-year-old ginkgo tree in Fuquan, Guizhou Province, is the oldest one on the earth.
The tree is also well-known for the shape of its leaves. They're like fans. In spring, the green leaves make sounds when blown by the wind. In autumn, the ginkgo leaves turn beautiful golden yellow. When late autumn comes, the leaves fall from the tree, like butterflies dancing in the sun.
Besides its beauty, the ginkgo tree has important value. It is good for the environment keeping the air clean. Also, the leaves and seeds (种子) of the ginkgo tree have medicinal value and have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. What's more, the ginkgo tree provides cool living areas for different kinds of wildlife.
Sadly, the ginkgo tree is in danger for several reasons. As cities develop, many ginkgo trees are cut down or losing their living land. And pollution increases and leaves a bad influence on the growth of these trees.

Helping Animals in Our Community
Many young people are doing great things to help animals in their community. Here’s an interview with two teens, Emma and Jake, who joined a local animal protection project.
◆ Can you introduce your project?
Emma: I created a plan to help lost pets. I made pictures of the missing animals and shared them with local shops and on the Internet. When someone found a lost pet, they could tell us so we could help return it to the owner.
Jake: I built a small home for street animals.
I built a small home for street animals. It’s in my backyard, and I take care of the animals there. I also found families who wanted to take them, so the animals could have a better life.
◆ What inspired you to start your project?
Emma: I saw many pets that were lost, and I wanted to help them. I knew they needed to find their way back home. I could help by sharing pictures.
Jake: I saw that many street animals were living outside and didn’t have a safe place. I wanted to help them by building a small home where they could stay until they found a family.
◆ What was the hardest part of the project?
Emma: The hardest part was showing enough people the pictures. I had to visit many shops and spend time on the Internet to let people know.
Jake: The hardest part was building the home. It took a lot of time and work to make sure it was safe and nice for the animals.
◆ Any advice for beginners?
Emma: If you want to help lost pets, start by showing their pictures. It may take time, but you can help a lot.
Jake: If you want to help street animals, think about how you can give them a safe and warm place. Small things can help a lot.
