If you're reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s.The oh-ohs.The 21st century.
That would make you young, creative, connected, giobal, and no doubt smart.Maybe
good-looking,too.Right?But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you're more interested in the screen in front of you than the world
around you. They think of you as the "face-down generation"because you use your phone so
much and they wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family. Are today's tcenagers
too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life-or"IRL",as you would say?
Other adults worry that today's youth are spoilt and don't want to face the
challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by "helicopter
parents"who were always there to guide and help them with a busy schedule filled with
homework and extra-curricular activities such as dancing, drawing,or sports. With parents who do
everything for them, today's youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their
20s0r30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up?Well,probably not.The fact is that many of
today's teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to
be enthusiastic and willing to become leaders.More young people than ever volunteer to
help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager
who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls'rights to go to school.
So if you're one of the oh-ohs,there's reason to be hopeful about the future.Things are
looking up for the face-down generation.Chances are that you will do GR8 (great)and LOL
(laugh out loud).
28.According to the passage, what is a common concern among some adults about the
"face-down generation"?
A.They lack creativity and intelligence.
B.They are too focused on their phones rather than the real world.
C.They have no interest in extra-curricular activities.
D.They are unwilling to use modern technology.
29.The underlined phrase"helicopter parents"in Paragraph 3 most probably means parents who

A.work as a helicopter pilot
B.often travel around by helicopter
C.are overly involved in their child's life
D.encourage their child to be independent
30.What can we infer about the writer's attitude towards the younger generation?
A.Worried and critical.
B.Hopeful and positive.
C.Indifferent and neutral.
D.Doubtful but curious.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The Rise of Helicopter Parents
B.Challenges Facing Today's Youth

Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They
absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon
absorption is that the COz trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural
process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2
into calcium oxalate()Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it
further into calcium carbonate(碳酸钙),a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique
process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree's life ends.
This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt
Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain.
The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform
throughout their lifetime.Without this accurate data,it is challenging to assess the full impact of
this method globally.Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of
biodiversity are crucial before worldwide planting of these trees.Cooperative research efforts are
needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a
natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in
addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital,
integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees
presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding
natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees,we must ask ourselves:How can we make the best of
the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
32.What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A.They help turn CO2 into solids.
B.They can absorb more COz.
C.They can release oxygen quickly.
D.They live in harmony with bacteria.
33.Why is the accurate data on CO2 transformation of the trees important?
A.To grow more trees in Kenya quickly.
B.To carry out more cooperative researches.
C.To keep the ecological balance and increase biodiversity.
D.To evaluate the global impact of the CO2 transformation.
34.What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
第3页
A.The method of green development.B.The role of nature in climate solutions.
C.The prospect of scientific approaches.D.The seriousness of global climate change.
55.What does the passage tell us?
A.Kenyan trees are a natural carbon lock.B.A defensive strategy in nature is found.
C.Tree planting is a key to ecological balance.D.A recent advance in COz research is achieved.

Milo was a third-grade student. One momning, with the school bell due to ring in just minutes,
he was running desperately through the grocery store parking lot.His teacher Mrs.Grant had
wamned him the day before that if he was late one more time, she would call his parents.
Halfway across the lot,Milo froze.Sun beat down on a silver car.Inside the car,a little boy
was tied in a seat. His small hands waved weakly. His face was red,and his cheeks had lines of
tears. The window was closed tight.Sweat shone on the boy's head.Miio was terrified, but when
he looked around, there was no one else.Milo's stomach turned.Heat could kill faster than anyone
imagined. He dropped his backpack, ran to the car,and desperately pulled at every handle-all
locked. He hit the window again and again in panic, but the parking lot was still empty. No one
came.
Milo looked around wildly, and then he remembered the security guard's booth (near
the store entrance.Without another thought,Milo took off running, shouting as he went.He burst
into the small booth, breathless, and poured out his story to the surprised guard.
Within minutes, the guard was on the radio, and a store manager came rushing out with a
special tool to unlock the door of the car.As the door opened,a blast of hot air escaped. The boy's
cries, now loud and clear, filled the quiet lot.Milo watched, his own fear fading,as the manager
gently lifted the sweating boy and held him close.
A few minutes later,a young woman came hurrying out of the store, her arms full of bags.
Her face went pale when she saw the crowd around her car.She dropped the bags and ran forward,
tears springing to her eyes as the manager placed her son safely in her arms. She had only run in
for medicine quickly, she explained, her voice trembling with regret. She never meant to be more
than a minute.
