Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travel. A 2. D 3. 根据Journeys of a Lifetime部分中“Adapted from the favorite trips of National Geographic Society’s travel writers, Journeys of a Lifetime crosses the globe to show the world’s most famous as well as little-known destinations.(改编自国家地理学会旅行作家最喜欢的旅行,《一生的旅程》穿越全球,展示了世界上最著名和鲜为人知的目的地)”可知,从《一生的旅程》中你可以了解到一些不太出名的目的地。故选A。 根据Destinations of a Lifetime部分中“Hundreds of the most amazing places — both natural and man-made — are decorated with vivid photos taken by the world-class photographers.(数百个最令人惊叹的地方——无论是自然的还是人造的——都装饰着世界级摄影师拍摄的生动照片)”可知,《一生的目的地》的特别之处在于它有许多精彩的照片。 根据内容可知,Journeys of a Lifetime的读者是1083;Destinations of a Lifetime的读者是917;World’s Best Travel Experiences的读者是1295;Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travel的读者是1023。 C。 B I first met Paul Newman in 1968, when George Roy Hill, the director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, introduced us in New York City. When the studio didn’t want me for the film - it wanted somebody as well known as Paul — he stood up for me. I don’t know how many people would have done that; they would have listened to their agents or the studio powers. The friendship that grew out of the experience of making that film and The Sting four years later had its root in the fact that although there was an age difference, we both came from a tradition of theater and live TV. We were respectful of craft(技艺) and focused on digging into the characters we were going to play. Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other — but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core(核心) of our relationship off the screen. We shared the belief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back — he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival. Paul and I didn’t see each other all that regularly, but sharing that brought us together. We supported each other financially and by showing up at events. I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was, and we didn’t talk about it. Ours was a relationship that didn’t need a lot of words. 4. Why was the studio unwilling to give the role to author at first? A. Paul Newman wanted it. B. The studio powers didn’t like his agent. C. He wasn’t famous enough. D. The director recommended someone else. 5. Why did Paul and the author have a lasting friendship? A. They were of the same age. B. They worked in the same theater. C. They were both good actors. D. They han similar charactertics. 6. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Their belief. B. Their care for children. C. Their success. D. Their support for each other. 7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To show his love of films. B. To remember a friend. C. To introduce a new movie. D. To share his acting experience. C 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第一段的“When the studio didn’t want me for the film— it wanted somebody as well known as Paul”制片人不想要我,他想要当时比较出名的演员Paul,因此,可知作者当时还不是很有名。 根据第二段的“Both of us had the qualities and virtues that are typical of American actors: humorous, aggressive, and making fun of each other— but always with an underlying affection. Those were also at the core (核心)of our relationship off the screen”可知,作者与Paul之间有着相似的性格特征,这让他们的友谊天长地久。 根据“We shared the brief that if you’re fortunate enough to have success, you should put something back”,我们都有这个信仰:如果你有幸获得成功,你应该有所回馈。下文“he with his Newman’s Own food and his Hole in the Wall camps for kids who are seriously ill, and me with Sundance and the institute and the festival”是作者举的例子,因此“sharing that brought us together.”that指代前面提到的信仰。故选A。 根据最后一段“I last saw him a few months ago. He’d been in and out of the hospital. He and I both knew what the deal was,and we didn’t talk about it”可知Paul已经去世了,再结合前文“I first met Paul Newman in 1968”,可推断作者写文章是为了怀念这位朋友。 如小题1中的A项“Paul Newman wanted it.”属于“颠倒黑白”类干扰项,根据“When the studio didn’t want me for the film— it wanted somebody as well known as Paul”可知制片人不想要我,他想要当时比较出名的演员Paul,说明A项明显错误。 C Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely leading to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem. Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times. It’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, however, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass. Like running, race walking is physically tough, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is about twice as many as they would burn walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about1,000 or more calories per hour. However, race walking does not beat on the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. According to her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step. As a result, she says, some of the injuries related to running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first turn to a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice. 8. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes? A. They must run long distances. B. They are qualified for the marathon. C. They have to follow specific rules. D. They are good at swinging their legs. 9. What advantage does race walking have over running? A. It’s more popular at the Olympics. B. It’s less challenging physically. C. It’s more effective in body building. D. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries. 10. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking? A. Getting experts’ opinions. B. Having a medical checkup. C. Hiring an experienced coach. D. Doing regular exercises. 11. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to race walking? A. Doubtful B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Concerned. C 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第二段中的“But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact with the ground at all times.(但是这项运动的规则要求竞走者在摆腿的大部分过程中膝盖保持伸直,并且一只脚始终与地面保持接触。)” 根据第五段中的“As a result, she says, some of the injuries related to running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers.(因此,她说,一些与跑步相关的损伤,比如跑步膝,在竞走者中并不常见。)” 根据第五段中的“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first turn to a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says.(她说,事实上,任何想尝试竞走的人都应该先向教练或有经验的选手学习正确的技术。)” 故选A项。 通读全文,尤其第一段“Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely leading to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.(研究表明,竞走和跑步一样有许多健身益处,同时造成的损伤可能更少。然而,它也有自己的问题。)”以及下文介绍的竞走的运动规则和与跑步相比的优劣可知,文章既客观介绍了竞走的优势,也如实指出了它存在的问题,全文只是陈述事实,不带有偏向性的赞扬或批评,因此作者对竞走的态度是客观的。故选B项。 D The search for beauty spans centuries. Paintings of Egyptians dating back to 4,000 years show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup. In 18th-century France, wealthy noblemen wore large wigs (假发) of long, white hair to make themselves attractive. Today, people continue to devote a lot of time and money to their appearance. There is at least one good reason for the desire (渴望) to be attractive: beauty is power. Studies suggest that good-looking people make more money, get called on more often in class, and are regarded as friendlier. But what exactly is beauty? It’s difficult to describe it clearly, and yet we know it when we see it. And our awareness of it may start at a very early age. In one set of studies, six-month-old babies were shown a series of photographs. The faces on the pictures had been rated for attractiveness by a group of college students. In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones. The idea that even babies can judge appearance makes perfect sense to many researchers. In studies by psychologists (心理学家) , men show a preference for women with larger eyes, fuller lips, and a smaller nose and chin while women prefer men with large shoulders and a narrow waist. According to scientists, the mind unconsciously (无意识地) tells men and women that these features — the full lips, clear skin, strong shoulders — equal health and genetic well-being. Not everyone thinks the same way. What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another. Look at most Western fashion magazines: the women on the pages are thin, but is this “perfect” body type for women worldwide? Scientists’ answer is no; what is considered beautiful is subjective and changes around the world. They found native peoples in southeast Peru preferred shapes regarded overweight in Western cultures. For better or worse, beauty plays a role in our lives. But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical features considered universally attractive, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard. Beauty really is, as the saying goes, in the eye of the beholder (观看者). 12. People’s ideas about beauty ________. A. can be easily described B. are based upon strict standard C. have existed since ancient times D. have little influence on a person’s success 13. In Paragraph 3, the babies in the study ________. A. were rated for their appearance B. showed a preference for women with larger eyes C. were shown photos of a group of college students D. were able to tell attractive faces from unattractive ones 14. We can learn from the passage that ________. A. the ideas of beauty change as people grow up B. the standards for beauty are based on scientific researches C. the search for beauty is the power to inspire the beholder D. the understanding of beauty is rooted in cultural backgrounds 15. What can probably be the best title for this passage? A. The History of Beauty B. The Mystery of Beauty C. The Standards for Beauty D. The Attitudes toward Beauty 【答案】12. C 13. D 14. D 15. 根据第一段中的“The search for beauty spans centuries. Paintings of Egyptians dating back to 4,000 years show both men and women painting their nails and wearing makeup.(对美的追求跨越了数个世纪。追溯到4000年前的埃及画作显示,男女都会涂指甲、化妆。)”可知,人类对美的看法从古时候就已经存在了。故选C项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“In the studies, the babies spent more time looking at the attractive faces than the unattractive ones.(在研究中,婴儿注视有吸引力面孔的时间比没有吸引力的面孔更长。)” 根据第五段中的“What is considered attractive in one culture might not be in another.(在一种文化中被认为有吸引力的事物,在另一种文化中可能并非如此。)” 通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“But it is extremely difficult to describe exactly what makes one person attractive to another. Although there do seem to be certain physical features considered universally attractive, it is also true that beauty does not always keep to a single, uniform standard.(但很难准确描述是什么让一个人对另一个人有吸引力。尽管某些身体特征似乎被普遍认为有吸引力,但美并不总是遵循单一统一的标准。)”可知,文章围绕“美”展开,探讨了美的起源、本能判断、文化差异与标准不一,揭示了美的神秘之处,因此“美的奥秘”最能概括全文核心,适合作为最佳标题。故选B项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Study for a Test or Final The end of the term is drawing near, and that means final exams are on the way. ____16____ The most important thing you can do is give yourself plenty of time to prepare. Extremely politely, he said, “Good evening. I’m wondering if you have a room for just one night. I came for treatment from the eastern shore (海岸), and there’s no bus till the morning.” 可知这位老人正在找住的地方,所以空1考查ask for,描述过去的事情,ask用一般过去时; 空2表明老人很礼貌,修饰动词spoke,用副词politely;根据第三段“For a moment, I hesitated (犹豫), not only because there was no room left. But his following words convinced (说服了) me: “I could sleep on the floor. I’ll leave early in the morning.” 可知空3为接受,接在want后,用不定式作宾语,所以是to accept,空4为改变,为动词change,描述过去的事情,用一般过去时,所以是changed,空5为动词同意,为动词agree,描述过去的事情,用一般过去时,所以是agreed;根据第四段“By chatting with him, I knew he fished for a living to support a big family. But what touched me most was that instead of complaining, he was grateful that his disease didn’t bring him terrible pain. 可知空6为困难的,用形容词hard,空7为抱怨,应用动词complain,描述过去的事情,用一般过去时,所以是complained,空8为感动,应用动词move,应用一般过去时,并且主语和谓语是被动关系,用被动语态,所以是was moved;根据最后一段“At bedtime, we put a bed in the children’s room for him. The next morning, he got up early and asked if he could come again. I told him he would be welcome. 根据第二段“Extremely politely, he said, “Good evening. I’m wondering if you have a room for just one night. I came for treatment from the eastern shore (海岸), and there’s no bus till the morning.” 和第四段“By chatting with him, I knew he fished for a living to support a big family. But what touched me most was that instead of complaining, he was grateful that his disease didn’t bring him terrible pain. He is responsible /hardworking, positive and grateful/thankful. 根据最后一段“The next morning, he got up early and asked if he could come again. I told him he would be welcome. Yes, he will. Because he thinks the writer is very kind and will sincerely welcome him./No, he won’t. Because he thinks the writer is so kind that he can’t bother the writer anymore. She may feel lucky/happy/inspired to know him, because she learned how to be thankful/grateful and positive from him. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 This term, I’m studying in a new high school with the most beautiful campus in our city. C Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely leading to fewer injuries. A. Doubtful B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Concerned. D The search for beauty spans centuries. I came for treatment from the eastern shore (海岸), and there’s no bus till the morning.” He told me he’d been searching for a room since noon, but failed because of his face. For a moment, I hesitated (犹豫), not only because there was no room left. But his following words convinced (说服了) me: “I could sleep on the floor. I’ll leave early in the morning.” By chatting with him, I knew he fished for a living to support a big family.
