Sample 1: Frédéric François Chopin
Frédéric François Chopin was a Polish composer and pianist born in 1810. He was a child prodigy, and showed great musical skill from a young age. He faced great challenges with his health throughout his life. He suffered from tuberculosis repeatedly which gave him problems with his heart. It also made it hard for him to do things later in his life. Despite this he produced over 230 works and took music in new directions. He gained a worldwide reputation as the leading musician of his generation. Sadly, his health issues led to his early death at 39, but his work is still loved today, and he is rightly considered a musical genius.
Sample 2: Sima Qian
Sima Qian was a Chinese historian born around 145 BCE. He is famous for his work Historical Records, covering 2,000 years of Chinese history. In 99 BCE he became involved in the Li Ling affair. The general was defeated and captured along with Li Guangli, Emperor Wu's brother-in-law. Sima Qian was the only person to defend Li Ling and the Emperor took this as an attack on his brother-in-law. Sima Qian was sentenced to death but was given the option of castration instead. He was then imprisoned for three years. Despite this great challenge, he continued with his histories and developed many innovative techniques, such as interviewing, visiting actual sites, and examining documents from different regions and times. He knew his work was more important than his own personal suffering and is today considered the father of Chinese historiography.
Sample 3: Ludwig van Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist born in 1770. He was very influential and is considered one of the greatest composers of all time. He showed talent from a young age and performed widely after finding success. However, he faced many challenges in his life, perhaps most famously with the loss of his hearing. He stopped performing and appearing in public and was nearly completely deaf by 1811. Despite this he produced some of his most famous and most loved works during this period. He also faced other health issues and personal problems with his relationships, but he kept composing all his life, resulting in a body of work including nine symphonies, five piano concertos, and sixteen string quartets. He is seen as an important figure in the development of classical music, and his compositions are known throughout the world to this day.
