“No print, no year” is an old saying that many people in Suzhou know well. The “print” here means Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints, a special kind of nianhua, or New Year pictures.
In 2006, Taohuawu Woodblock New Year Prints was named a national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) for its bright colours, clear patterns and many different themes. One of its inheritors is Sun Yibo. He’s 44 years old and has worked on Taohuawu prints for over 20 years.
“Although Taohuawu prints are a form of nianhua, they are not limited to traditional images like door gods, flowers, birds, and court ladies,” Sun explained. “To keep the craft alive, artists now also choose themes from popular culture, such as video games, movies, and even memes (表情包).”
Such rich themes also mean difficult processes. Sun said that to make a woodblock New Year picture, artists need to draw the draft (草稿), carve it on different blocks (印版), and then make the prints one by one on paper. “Each woodblock New Year picture follows the ‘one colour on one carved block’ rule and is made with the colours printed on top of each other.” explained Sun. “One picture comes from at least two blocks, and some even from six blocks. It depends on how many colours are in the picture. Machines can’t do this job at all.”
However, getting the right colour on the block is never easy. Sun said that when he made a woodblock New Year picture showing a scene from the game Paper Bride, he printed and adjusted each colour block more than 100 times to get the right look.
Even so, Sun and other inheritors in Suzhou are finding ways to pass down the traditional technique originating (起源) in the Song Dynasty. “Now we have courses at Suzhou Art &Design Technology School. Students who are interested in this tradition can learn the skill step by step in class,” said Sun.
34. How does the passage bring in the topic?
A. By using an old saying. B. By asking a simple question.
C. By sharing an interesting story. D. By introducing a famous person.
35. Which of the following shows the second step to make a woodblock New Year picture?
A. B. C. D.
36. Why does the writer give the example of the game Paper Bride?
A. To describe how organized Sun is.
B. To show how valuable this picture is.
C. To explain how difficult it’s to get proper colours.
D. To prove how important this picture is in Sun’s works.
37. What do we know about Taohuawu prints according to the passage?
A. They aren’t regular school courses yet.
B. They have a history of more than 20 years.
C. They mix traditional beauty with new themes.
D. They can be produced more quickly by machines.

Mr. Dunsmuir, the English teacher, gave the class a writing task. “Write something in some way connected to summer holiday,” he said. “Be as creative as you can. Let your imagination run wild. But,” the teacher added, “make sure you use proper spelling and grammar.”
That night Jennie sat at her desk at home and looked at a blank sheet of paper. She didn’t want to write about her summer holiday as usual. What could she write about, except a cat, a water park, and two weeks of camp? Boring... She’d actually been happy to get back to school.
So she decided to write what she wanted. Not an article at all but a short story. It was about a faraway planet that didn’t have summer — it was spring all the time. And it didn’t have holidays either. The aliens on the planet worked 24 hours a day. They wished they had holidays.
The next morning, Jennie handed in the story, but later that night she lay awake until 3 a.m., thinking, “Why did I do that? Will Mr. Dunsmuir think I ignored (忽视) the task?” English was her favourite class. Maybe she would beg Mr. Dunsmuir for a chance to write another one, the kind he wanted.
But when she got to class the following day, it turned out that Mr. Dunsmuir had already read and graded the articles.
The teacher said, “I’m going to pass back your summer holiday writing in a minute. I’m afraid I’ve got some rather harsh words to say. Almost everyone in class simply wrote an article about his or her summer holiday... Almost everyone.” “This is bad,” Jennie thought, “I’m getting an F, I know it.”
“But,” the teacher continued, “one of you had the courage to be as imaginative as I asked you to be. Jennie Anderson was the only one who got an A on the task.”
Jennie couldn’t believe her ears.
38. Why did Jennie get an A on her writing?
A. Because she wrote one more article.
B. Because she followed her heart bravely.
C. Because she asked the teacher for some advice.
D. Because she introduced a wonderful summer holiday.
39. In the mind map below, which of the following can be put in ▲ ?
Jennie’s experience
A. Writing a story; Afraid B. Returning to school; Glad
C. Begging a chance; Worried D. Making a decision; Surprised
40. In what tone (语气) was the teacher saying the underlined sentence?
A. Angry. B. Satisfied. C. Patient. D. Cheerful.
41. Which can be the best title of the passage?
A. A Boring Story B. A Different Writing Task C. A Strange Planet D. A Strict English Teacher
D
Nowadays, many people are choosing to refill (再填充) their old bottles instead of throwing them away. At special stores, customers bring their own clean containers (容器) to fill with soap, shampoo or cleaning liquids. They only pay for the weight of the product they add. This way, no new plastic packaging is created. Some customers have used the same bottle for six years, which saves much money and stops a lot of waste.
▲ Years ago, people returned glass bottles for milk, soda and beer. This allowed the bottles to be reused. However, companies later started to use plastic and paper packages because they were cheaper and easier to handle. Today, the idea of reusing is coming back. More companies sell some products without any packaging. Meanwhile (与此同时), there are more and more kinds of cool, strong, and useful reusable bottles and containers in the market now. These products are made to be used again and again.
However, refill systems still face challenges. Cleaning and collecting the bottles takes time, work, and money. It can make the products more expensive. Experts say that reusing is better than recycling, but only if people use the container many times. For example, a heavy ceramic (陶瓷的) coffee cup must be used over 20 times to be truly better for the environment than a paper cup. Also, if you drive about 30 miles just to refill a bottle, the car pollution might cancel out the environmental benefit.
Even though refilling is not perfect, it has become a popular lifestyle. On social media, many people share photos and videos of how they refill their bottles. Bringing your own bottle is more than just a useful habit — it shows that you care about the environment. When more people are doing the same, that really can make a difference.
42. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell people how to save money and time by refilling.
B. To teach us how to clean and collect old bottles for refilling.
C. To explain the differences between refilling, recycling and reusing.
D. To introduce the refilling lifestyle to spread an environmental idea.
43. Which of the following can be put in ▲ in paragraph 2?
A. This idea is not new. B. It’s a wonderful idea.
C. The idea helps a lot. D. The idea doesn’t work.
44. What methods does the writer use to explain the problems refill systems face?
① Giving examples ② Listing numbers
③ Explaining meanings ④ Comparing things
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
45. Based on this passage, which project is proper for Jim, a student, to carry out as a social practice?
A. Open a Bottle Return Shop.
B. DIY a Paper Cup for Your Friend.
C. Bring Your Own Bottles to School.
D. Collect Bottles for Kindness and Future.

After meeting the Old Gentleman, the children’s days at the railway station became full of life.
One afternoon, when they were down at the station, they saw a truck standing on the roadside. It was full of something in sacks (麻布袋). The sacks were marked with a word “Guano”.
“I have seen them!” Peter said. “They are the same sacks on the barge (驳船) that upset (侧翻) by the river.”
“Yes,” said Bobbie. “And I do believe this. Look at the name — ‘Guano’. That’s what was on the barge.”
“So the sacks must go to Oswestry,” said Phyllis. “That’s where the barge was going.”
Just then, they saw the Old Gentleman coming along the platform.
“Look, it’s guano,” Peter went up. “It came off a barge that upset.”
The Old Gentleman looked at the truck seriously.
“Children,” then he said, “I need your help. I want you to go to the river and see if there is any more guano there. Can I trust you?”
“Yes,” said Peter. “Come on.”
They ran all the way to the river. There, they saw the barge, with some sacks on it, and the unlucky barge man was sitting on the bank, sadly.
“You need help?” Peter asked him.
“Yes. But it’s hard work.”
“We don’t mind hard work,” said Bobbie.
The three children got on the barge and began to lift the sacks in the hot July sun. An hour later, they had got all the sacks off the barge and on to the bank.
They went back to the station and told the Old Gentleman what they had done.
“Thank you,” he said. “And now I need your help again. I want you to go with the truck to Oswestry, will you?”
“Yes,” said Phyllis. “But why?”
“Because I believe you can take charge of (负责) it. I want you to see that it gets there safely.”
They all smiled and got into the truck.

When most cities shine brightly at night, Shenzhen has chosen to turn off its lights for migratory birds (候鸟). This d 61 is widely praised.
Recently, some visitors noticed that Shenzhen Bay Park was dark at night. Shenzhen Bay lies on an important bird migration route (路线). Every winter, thousands of migratory birds s 62 here during their long journeys. Too much light can disrupt (扰乱) their natural habits or even scare them away. To care for these lovely g 63 from the north, the park turns off lights.
This does not mean the park is c 64 dark. To keep people safe, basic lighting remains in key areas such as main entrances, crossroads, and important walkways. This balanced action shows a wise and t 65 way to run a city.
As early as 2023, Shenzhen introduced rules to c 66 light pollution. For example, in the area around the mangroves (红树林), cold blue-white lights have been replaced (替换) with w 67 yellow ones that disturb birds less. Thanks to these efforts, the number of bird species in Shenzhen’s mangrove parks has r 68 from 83 to 220 over the past few years.
What makes this story special is the voice of the public. Many people agree that making space for nature is the right c 69 . This shows a growing awareness (意识) that a truly livable city is not just bright and busy, but also peaceful and balanced.
Shenzhen is not a 70 . Other cities like Beijing and Chengdu have also taken steps to cut down light pollution during migration seasons.
