On a Friday morning in April, Dan Stein, the founder of Giving Green, a climate charity organization, found some big news in a surprising email. An anonymous (匿名) donor had given his fund $10 million.
“I didn’t quite expect so many zeroes and thought of it to be a mistake,” Stein said, adding he was “delighted and shocked” by the gift.
Giving Green collects donations and gives them away to a handful of nonprofits that it believes have the potential to make a significant difference in preventing climate change and reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases. The $10 million donation is by far the largest single gift the nonprofit has ever received and it essentially fell out of the sky without warning.
Stein and his team think the same donor may actually have given as much as $17 million more directly to those organizations in the last two years. Because the gifts are anonymous, it’s impossible to confirm, but Stein says the timing of the gifts suggests they could have come from the same person or organization.
In general, giving anonymously is often regarded as the highest form of giving. Stein said, adding the donor thinks “I’m doing this out of a sense of creating a better community and simply believing that this money should go towards other uses rather than sitting in my pocket or my bank account.”
Stein sees the donations as evidence that there are donors who want to give to climate change but don’t know where to donate. “The climate problem is an incredible generational problem and we think that we, as a society, should be doing things to stop it,” Stein said. “And that one thing that people can do is making donations.”
Stein said Giving Green intends to distribute the majority of the $10 million gift as soon as possible, with much of it going to the organizations they recommend. They’ll also direct smaller amounts to new organizations or programs within organizations that they support.
4. What was Dan Stein’s reaction to the anonymous donation?
A. He was indifferent.
B. He suspected it was a cheat.
C. He was overjoyed and couldn’t believe it.
D. He immediately identify the donor through the email trace.
5. What is the main purpose of Giving Green?
A. To carry out climate change researches.
B. To launch public awareness campaigns on climate change.
C. To set up nonprofit organizations to deal with climate change.
D. To help address climate problems by collecting and distributing.
6. According to the text, why is anonymous giving considered the highest form of giving?
A. It makes the donation process simpler.
B. It prioritizes the public welfare over personal benefits.
C. It ensures the donor gains public recognition.
D. It helps keep the donor’s bank account a secret.
7. What does Stein plan to do with the donation?
A. Set aside the majority of it for future needs.
B. Invest smaller amounts in marketing and promoting.
C. Distribute a substantial part of it to recommended organizations.
D. Give most of it away to newly-established organizations or programs.
C
If someone asked whether you like the arts, you’d probably say you do—at least in theory. According to a survey, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults say the arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences.” However, only 30 percent attended a concert of any type in 2017; 23 percent went to an art museum. Fewer than half actively created art of any kind.
The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed. Maybe you like to play a little background music while you work or do the chores, but even before the pandemic, most of us rarely, if ever, saw a live performance, let alone visited a gallery or watched a play.
Too often, we let the dull reality of life get in the way of the arts. But this is a mistake. The arts are the opposite of an escape from reality; they might just be the most realistic glimpse we ever get into the nature and meaning of life. If you make time for consuming and producing art—the same way you make time for work and exercise and family commitments—I assure you that you’ll find your life getting fuller and happier. Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry. Or maybe your dizziness as you emerged from a narrow side street in an unfamiliar city and found yourself in a beautiful town square as if in a fantasy. They probably stimulated a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.
If you are among the people who feel that art is pure pleasure to experience and participate in, you might see it as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat art less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity. Then draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave art into your everyday life.
8. What prevents people from enjoying the arts?
A. Shortage of time. B. Avoidance of duty.
C. Lack of interest. D. Art space inaccessibility.
9. What can we learn about the role of art according to the passage?
A. It explores mysteries of life. B. It sparks emotional responses.
C. It enhances physical well-being. D. It offers a getaway from daily life.
10. What will be talked about next in the passage?
A. Ways to integrate art into routine. B. Barriers to combine art and life.
C. Forms of distracting pleasures. D. Benefits of engaging with art.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Art Journey: Refreshing Soul
B. Art Pursuit: Transforming Dull into Full
C. Embracing Art: From Luxury to Necessity
D. Connecting with Art: From Reality to Fantasy
D
Despite medical progress, treating bone breaks with many small pieces remains a big challenge. It is time-consuming and often leads to poor healing, greatly affecting patients’ quality of life. For over 40 years, Professor Fan Shunwu dreamed of a bone-gluing material and passed the task to post-90s doctor Lin Xianfeng. His inspiration came during a visit to his hometown, where the ancient Luoyang Bridge has stood firm for centuries despite the wearing effect of seawater.
The secret lies in oysters raised under the bridge by ancient craftsmen. These shellfish produce adhesive (粘合的) threads and natural glue to attach tightly to granite piers (花岗岩桥墩). Their calcium-rich shells pile up layer by layer, filling gaps between stones and forming a strong barrier that defends the bridge against seawater. Instead of fighting the ocean, the craftsmen use the power of nature, which reflects the wisdom of learning from nature.
Drawing on this bionic principle, the team overcame key technical difficulties. After years of testing, they created “Bone 02” with three core breakthroughs: strong, instant adhesion in blood-rich environments, easy application, and gradual biodegradability.
In over 150 clinical cases, it proved safe and effective. A young worker once suffered a terrible break in his wrist. The traditional treatment would require a large cut to implant a plate and some screws (螺丝) — risky and requiring a second operation for removal. With “Bone 02”, doctors made a 2-3cm small cut, injected the adhesive, and fixed the bone in just 3 minutes. A three-month follow-up confirmed full healing — no complications and complete wrist function recovery.
From laboratories to operating rooms, scientists continually push the boundaries of life and health. This original Chinese achievement, born from multidisciplinary cooperation, marks a major breakthrough. It applies to most bone breaks and holds broad prospects, contributing Chinese wisdom to global health.
12. What motivated Lin Xianfeng to develop the new adhesive?
A. The ancient craftsman’s exceptional skills. B. The durable quality of granite.
C. The clever design of Luoyang Bridge. D. The natural ability of the shellfish.
13. Which of the following is a feature of “Bone 02”?
A. Natural absorption. B. Gentle muscle healing.
C. Increasing blood flow. D. Wound-free treatment.
14. Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “complications” in paragraph 4?
A. Complex techniques. B. Severe breaks.
C. Secondary problems. D. Positive changes.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To explain the wisdom of ancient craftspeople.
B. To introduce a bionic medical invention from China.
C. To compare traditional and modern bone treatments.
D. To describe the application of bionic technology in public health worldwide.

Sharing New Year with Strangers
I come from a large multicultural family, spread out across the globe. Despite being found in distant corners of the world, we’re a tight-knit family that makes an effort to stay close and keep in touch. New Year has always been a special time for us and a chance for us all to come together, no matter where in the world we might be.
My aunt Samantha, known affectionately by everyone in the family as Mantha, loved New Year and always went out of her way to make it cosy and magical for everyone around her. Mantha was kind, fun and full of energy so it wasn’t hard to get into the New Year spirit when she was around.
This year was no exception. Mantha drove three hours from her house in Bournemouth to visit everyone two weeks before New Year and to drop off presents to her friends still in the area. We chatted merrily about our plans, laughed at how organized Mantha was — presents already bought and wrapped and the freezer full ahead of the big day — and kissed goodbye when it was time to leave. So just several days before New Year, when Mantha’s son called us saying Samantha had passed away suddenly at home, none of us could quite believe it. I’d only been messaging her the day before, sharing voice notes like we always liked to do.
Mantha had had a blood clot (血块) that had unfortunately travelled to her lung and despite the paramedic’s best efforts, they were unable to save my beloved, fun, wonderful aunt.
So close to New Year, none of us felt like celebrating and we decided we’d have a quiet day at home, surrounded by family. The silence lasted until my sister-in-law, Vera, told us about some colleagues of hers who’d just arrived in the UK far away from friends and family. And they were eager to experience a proper English New Year.

C 5. D 6. B 7.

A 9. B 10. A 11. C

根据文章第二段内容“The mismatch can boil down to the fact that we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities, leaving our schedule packed.(这种不匹配可以归结为这样一个事实:我们被日常的责任压得喘不过气来,把我们的日程安排得满满的。)” 故选A项。
根据文章第三段内容“They probably stimulated a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.(它们可能刺激了一种突然的觉醒,很像吸入烟雾弥漫的空气后,一大口纯氧引起的震惊。)”
根据文章末尾段末尾句内容“Then draw up a schedule of your art exposure journey, and gradually weave art into your everyday life.(然后制定一个你的艺术接触之旅的时间表,并逐渐将艺术融入你的日常生活。)” 故选A项。
通过阅读文章内容可知,文章最后一段内容“If you are among the people who feel that art is pure pleasure to experience and participate in, you might see it as a luxury item, while a preferable attitude is to treat art less like a distracting pleasure, and more like exercise or sleep, a necessity.(如果你认为艺术是一种纯粹的体验和参与的乐趣,你可能会将其视为奢侈品,而更可取的态度是将艺术视为一种分散注意力的乐趣,而更像是一种锻炼或睡眠,一种必需品。)” C“Embracing Art: From Luxury to Necessity(拥抱艺术:从奢侈品到必需品)”贴合主旨,可作最佳标题。故选C项。

故填which。
此处为固定搭配in the company of,意为“在……的陪伴下”,所以用介词in。故填in。
故填the。
故填as/though。
故填have picked。
故填to explain。

Li Hua
One possible version:
Dear David,
I’m writing to share my view on the theme of our school’s weekly English Art Podcast. I strongly recommend choosing “Traditional Chinese Art & Its Inheritance” as our column theme.
This topic not only helps international students understand the charm of Chinese culture but also boosts our own appreciation of traditional art. For the podcast content, we can introduce classic art forms like paper-cutting, calligraphy and Peking Opera in each episode. We can also invite art teachers to share stories behind these art forms and encourage students to share their own experiences of learning traditional crafts.
I believe this theme will make our podcast both educational and engaging.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Hearing this, we were in a dilemma.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
When the day finally came, we welcomed them into our house.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing this, we were in a dilemma. We were still immersed in enormous grief of aunt Mantha’s passing away. However, it was cruel to decline the burning anticipation of Vera’s colleagues. Just when we didn’t know what to do, Mantha’s kind smile popped into my head. I realized Mantha would have wanted us to open our doors and give them a cosy and magical New Year to remember, just like she did to everyone before. At the last minute, we dashed around shops, adding to the trolly presents, extra bottles of drinks and snacks.
When the day finally came, we welcomed them into our house. To give our new guests the full New Year experience, we tried hard to put our pain aside. We opened presents together, ate a fancy dinner and played wonderful games. All these didn’t ease the pain of Mantha’s absence but connecting with strangers and sharing our culture helped us get through the day. The first New Year without Mantha was difficult but it took on a deeper, more special meaning. It came from being together, putting aside our differences and showing one another love.
