Diarra Boubacar,a traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)practitioner()from Mali,Africa,is
the first foreign doctor in China to earn a doctoral degree in TCM.His journey began in the 1980s when he
chose to study in China, impressed by Chinese doctors using acupuncture(针灸)to treat polio(小儿庥痹
in Mali. After experiencing TCM's effectiveness during a severe cold,he switched from Western med-
icine to TCM,earning his doctorate in 1997 from Chengdu University of TCM.
Boubacar faced challenges early in his career. On his first day,a patient questioned his qualifications
due to his foreign appearance. To build trust,he reassured patients in the waiting area, eventually win-
ning them over with his expertise.Over three decades,he has treated thousands and trained over 3,000
rural doctors in China. He dreams of promoting TCM globally, especially in Africa, aiming to establish
TCM centers combining research, teaching and medical care.
The World Health Organization included TCM in its International Classification of Diseases, and Chi-
na has developed over 90 international TCM standards. However, experts like Jia Yunfeng note that mis-
interpretations of TCM's benefits and a lack of communication talent prevent its global reach.
Tim Vukan,a German TCM practitioner, shares Boubacar's mission. After studying martial arts,
Vukan became crazy about TCM's holistic approach().He overcame language barriers by turn-
ing herbal medicine and acupuncture points into songs and writing them on cards. Now,he teaches medi-
cal English at Zhejiang Chinese Medical University and runs Wushan TCM,a platform sharing TCM
knowledge globally.Vukan believes TCM's focus on prevention and self-care can improve lives world-
wide.
Iranian Motahareh Asgari and her husband Meghdad Abdi are also TCM advocates.Asgari, the first
English-taught TCM PhD graduate from Shanghai University of TCM,promotes cultural exchanges be
tween China and Iran.Abdi,a tai chi enthusiast, has won competitions in Iran and Shanghai.Together,
they represent over 1,000 international students at SHUTCM,contributing to TCM's global expansion.

Independent will is what really makes effective self-management possible. It is the ability to make de-
cisions and choices and to act in accordance with them.It is the ability to act rather than to be acted upon.
The human will is an amazing thing.Time after time,it has won against unbelievable difficulties. The
Helen Kellers of this world give dramatic evidence to the value, the power of the independent will. But as
we examine it in the context of effective self-management,we realize it's usually not the dramatic, the vis-
ible, the once-in-a-lifetime effort that brings enduring success.Empowerment comes from learning how to
use independent will in the decisions we make every day.
The degree to which we have developed our independent will in our everyday lives is measured by our
personal integrity.Integrity is,fundamentally, the value we place on ourselves. It's our ability to make and
keep commitments to ourselves-to "walk our talk".It's honor with self,a fundamental part of the char-
acter ethic, the essence of active growth.
Effective management is putting first things first. While leadership decides what "first things"are,it
is management that puts them first,day-by-day,moment-by-moment.Management is discipline, carrying
it out.
Discipline stems from disciple()-disciple to a philosophy,disciple to a set of principles,dis-
ciple to a set of values, and disciple to an ultimate purpose. In other words,if you are an effective manager
of yourself, your discipline comes from within;it is a function of your independent will. You are a disci-
ple,a follower,of your own deep values and their source. And you have the will, the integrity,to place
your feelings, your urges, your moods after those values.
That placement requires a purpose,a mission. It also requires independent will, the power to do
something when you don't want to do it,to be a function of your values rather than a function of the urge
or desire of any given moment. It's the power to act with integrity to your first creation.
28.What is the author's purpose in mentioning "the Helen Kellers"in Paragraph 2?
A.To explain a reason.
B.To highlight a point.
C.To make a prediction.
D.To give a definition.
29.What do the underlined words "walk our talk"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Put words into deeds.
B.Display confidence.
C.Stop talking big
D.Strike a balance.
30.To achieve effective self-management,what will the author probably recommend?
A.Seeking external support.
B.Undertaking more missions.
C.Sticking to one's own values.
D.Following one's desires.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Secret Behind Self-discipline
B.The Magic of Personal Integrity
C.The Power of Independent Will
D.The Road to Effective Management
英语试题(四)第4页(共8页)
D
Does it often feel as if the world is getting stupider?Data released by the OECD suggests that a fifth
of adults do no better in maths and reading than a primary school child. In maths, average scores have ris-
en in a few places over the past ten years, but fallen in almost as many..In literacy(读写能力),a lot more
countries have seen scores decline than advance, despite the fact that adults hold more and higher educa-
tional qualifications than ever before.
Demographic change offers some explanation-new immigrants often struggle with a new language
while the native-born have ageing brains.Basic numeracy()and literacy are oddly unfashionable
compared with fashionable"soft skills",like generative Al:Overstating the importance of times-tables(
seems even more boring when talking robots promise to do all the hard work.
Yet a century of technological development has not cut demand for people who are good with numbers
or words.Adults who do badly in the OECD's tests earn much less than those who top them. They are al-
so in poorer health, less satisfied with their life, less trusting of others and more likely to feel that they
have no voice in politics.
What to do?Improving lessons for children is the surest way of creating more capable grown-ups.
England's adults have gradually improved their position in the OECD's rankings, mostly because the
youngest ones are scoring better than before. The second task is to modernize outdated systems for educa-
ting adults. These give dropouts a second chance;they also serve people who change careers and help im-
migrants integrate.
In too many places,a craze for universities has cut back on funding and focus on the kinds of lessons
that people aged 18 and above could be offered.Degrees are becoming less meaningful:the OECD has
found that even some university graduates post numeracy and literacy scores that might embarass a child.
Meanwhile, those adults who want to return to class without beginning with long, expensive university
courses often find good alternatives are lacking.Faster actions to fix all these problems seem like a bright
idea.
32.What does the data released by the OECD show?
A.Adults may be less literate than before.
B.The majority of adults are well-educated.
C.Children can have easier access to education.
D.Adults find numeracy and literacy less useful.
33.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The effectiveness of education.
B.The role of advanced technology.
C.The value of literacy and numeracy.
D.The decline in political engagement.
34.Why is England mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.To criticize its outdated education system
B.To reveal the decrease in its dropout rate.
C.To demonstrate its high ranking in the OECD.
D.To highlight the significance of children's education.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.University students are financially supported.
B.Children are embarrassingly worse in numeracy.
C.Degrees and abilities are not necessarily matched.
D.Expensive university courses have good alternatives.

The last day of summer vacation arrived with intense heat,as the sun blazed fiercely overhead.Six-

Suddenly,a violent wind tore through the field, bending the cornstalks. Her mother rushed over,
