The term "social phobia"seem to have become popular these days.Young people are especially
describing themselves as having"social phobia".They prefer not to go out much, saying that it's hard for them
to make new friends. But is this a "real"problem?
In fact, this is just a reaction()to certain social situations. The US researcher Ty Tashiro explains
that some people don't "read"social situations correctly and end up feeling uncomfortable.
For example, they might be afraid of breaking some kind of unspoken rule.So they start to act awkwardly
(because they don't want this to happen. This might make it hard to be social. They prefer to stay in
instead of going out to meet new people.
"Real"social phobia is much more serious.People with social phobia want to go out and communicate
with people, but they are so afraid of doing it that they cannot leave their homes.Their brains simply won't
allow them to interact with others in a normal way.People with social phobia may experience panic attacks(
恐发作)and heavy sweating(流汗).
Fortunately, social phobia can be treated. Some people simply use self-help books to help them gain more
control over their minds. Those who are more serious can take medicine.

The storytellers'secrets
Find out how writers and artists create their exciting works.
Great stories don't just happen.Sometimes they can require years of work and effort. For example,J.K.
Rowling first had the idea for the Harry Potter series while stuck on a train in 1990-and the first book didn't
come out until 1997.If you have ever wondered how great storytellers come up with their ideas, now you can
find out. From September 24 to September 26,the Stories Festival will bring together lots of interesting people
to talk about their work at Picturehouse Central,in London.
One of those will be the author and illustrator(),Rob Biddulph, who will discuss his new book
Peanut Jones and the Illustrated City.He says the key to making the most of a story idea is to jot it down."I
find that ideas leave my head almost as quickly as they enter,"says Biddulph,"so I have to make a note of
them immediately, otherwise they will be gone forever.
Some storytellers at the event-such as Holly Smale,Elle McNicoll(who won the Waterstones Children's
Book Prize)and the author and illustrator Abigail Balfe-are sharing their thoughts on why it's important that
people with disabilities are represented in fiction."Every child deserves()to see themselves reflected
positively in stories,"says McNicoll.

silly and coming up with ideas together,"he says,"so it is a complete joy to get to write them into a story that
will outlive us.”

The first emperor of China,Qin ShiHuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule.Between
221 and 210 B.C.,he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge
army of life-sized terracotta soldiers().These,he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.
Lost in Time
The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as
an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple.Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present
day. After being exposed()to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off.The paint
disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history.
Now new technology is starting to show the army's true colors.Archeologists()have recently
discovered an area with more than a hundred soldiers. Many of these still have their painted features(),
including black hair, pink faces, and black or brown eyes.Chinese and German researchers have developed a
chemical liquid (to help save the soldiers'colors. After finding a soldier or another art piece,
archeologists put the liquid on it.They then cover it in plastic.
Back to Life
Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It's important not to do anything with
the dirt,so the colors won't be lost."We are treating the dirt as an art piece,"says Rong Bo,the museum's
leading archeologist. The next challenge, says Rong Bo,is to find a way to use the colors onto the army again.
Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to its full, bright colors.
()1.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The death of Emperor Qin ShiHuang.
B.How the terracotta army was colored.
C.The true colors of the terracotta soldiers.
D.How the soldiers lived during the Qin Dynasty.
(
)2.Why are the soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum today light brown?
A.Because they are too old.
B.Because they lost their time.
C.Because their paint fell off.
D.Because they took away the history.
(
)3.Which sentence should be filled in
in the passage?
A.Painted features
B.New Technology
C.Soldiers'color
D.Art pieces
)4.What does the underlined word "They"in the passage refer to?
A.Archeologists.
B.Artists.
C.Researchers.
D.Soldiers.
初中英语阅读卷·D
()5.Which statement would Rong Bo probably agree?
A.The soldiers should stay in their present, brown color.
B.People should try to bring back the army's bright colors.
C.Archeologists can only guess at the soldiers'true colors.
D.Artists should be able to paint the soldiers in colors they want.

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandmother always took
me to the orchard()on the hill.At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill
to halfway up the hill.Even though we worked so hard, the production level of fruit was still low because it
was short of water there.
One day,two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we
faced, and later,canals()and other projects began to be built in my village."Who are they?"I asked.
"They are good men from our government,"my grandma replied.
Shortly afterwards,I moved to another city for my junior high school. The only reason I ever came back to

She told us that after the water conservation project(水利工程)was completed,a policy(政策)was made to
encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside.
