Now, I go to the class every Saturday. It’s not just a hobby — it teaches me to be patient.

I’ve been interested in the natural world ever since I was little. Every weekend, I’d borrow as many books about animals as I could carry. I dreamed of following in Jane Goodall’s footsteps, going away for years to live in the wild and study animals. Sometimes, I’d sit in the grass for hours, iPad in hand, hoping to get the perfect shot of an insect.
Over the years, I’ve changed in many ways, but my love of nature and science has never gone away. When I entered high school last year, I joined the Science Club. Every day brings new adventures (冒险). One day, I might be exploring the birth of the universe as an astronomer; the next, I could be studying the rocks below my feet as a geologist (地质学家).
I’m lucky to have so many amazing teammates. Together, we’ve run tests to perfect the design of our model car. We studied different objects and solved cases like forensic scientists (法医学家). I used to work alone. However, working with my teammates has changed my mind. I’ve learned that teamwork isn’t just about dividing up the work — it’s about working together. As the old saying goes, “Many hands make light work.” No great achievement has ever been made alone. It always takes thousands of people who work together to make the impossible possible.
I’m thirsty for my next science adventure. But unlike before, I now know that I won’t be a lone explorer. My teammates will be by my side, learning and growing with me.

Birds are beautiful creatures. Looking at them in the wild could be good for us. That is what researchers in Toronto, Canada say. The scientists found that bird-watching could protect our brains against age-related illness. Lead researcher Dr. Erik Wing said: “ Skills from birding could be beneficial for our brains as people age.”
Dr. Wing and his coworkers compared scans (扫描) of the brain activity of 29 veteran (老手) birdwatchers and 29 beginners. The brains of the veteran birdwatchers were a lot more active. Dr. Wing said veterans had a longer attention time and a better memory than those new to the hobby. He added that the veteran birdwatchers could also manage information more quickly.
The scientists believe bird-watching benefits the brain like learning a musical instrument. This is because the brain learns new skills and this adds new ways and connections. Dr. Wing said bird-watching puts together two skills: being able to look for and find birds and being good at noticing small movements and common shapes.
Other scientists recommend the hobby. They say it is good for our mind and can lower stress. It is also good for our physical health because we are outside in the fresh air and sunlight. Other benefits include connecting with nature and becoming aware of the environment. Birdwatchers say their hobby is good for their social life because they meet many like-minded people.
32. What did the researchers find about bird-watching?
A. It is a difficult hobby. B. It is good for our brains.
C. It takes a long time to learn. D. It is popular with young people.
33. How were the veteran birdwatchers different from the beginners?
A. They had better memories. B. They felt more stressed.
C. They had shorter attention time. D. They had fewer brain activities.
34. Why is bird-watching good for physical health?
A. People walk a lot. B. People stay inside.
C. People are in fresh air and sunlight. D. People eat healthy food.

Are you a curious person? If you often want to learn more about something, then you probably are. But as American researcher Perry Zurn points out, not all “curious minds” are cut from the same cloth. There are at least three styles of curiosity: “busybodies,” “hunters” and “dancers.”
“Busybodies” like to collect bits of information on all kinds of topics. They’re not going after any certain goal. Rather, they’re just interested in the world around them. “Hunters” go after specific (确切的) answers. They follow a clear way to reach their goals. “ Dancers” jump at new ideas or mix old ones in new ways. They prefer to take the road less traveled.
Zurn and his team wanted to see how these curiosity styles work in real life. They studied online Wikipedia (维基百科) readers. Their research included 482,000 people from 50 countries. For each person, the team looked at how many different topics he or she read about and how closely those topics were connected. For example, did someone look up Pierre Perifel and then read about his new film, “The Bad Guy”? Or did he or she jump from the film director to tea art?
The results showed that all three types of curious minds exist (存在) among today’s Internet users. “Busybodies” read widely, but they especially liked sports, food and the arts. “Hunters” cared more about science and technology. Interestingly, they were more likely to feel stressed after their curious hunt. That’s probably because they had a stronger wish to enrich their knowledge.
Zurn says we are each born with a natural curiosity style. However, our style isn’t permanent. We can develop the other two styles by spending time with teachers or friends who think differently. That’s good news. After all, curiosity works best when all three styles exist in one mind.
36. What do “Dancers” like to do?
A. Go after specific answers. B. Welcome new ideas and think creatively.
C. Follow a clear way to reach goals. D. Collect different kinds of information.
37. Which question can help readers know the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. How did Zurn and his team do their research? B. How many books did Zurn read in his study?
C. Why did people like reading on Wikipedia? D. What did people think of Pierre Perifel?
38. Why were “Hunters” more likely to feel stressed?
A. Because they had no clear goals. B. Because they read widely.
C. Because they liked new ideas. D. Because they hoped to enrich their knowledge.
39. What does the underlined word “permanent” mean?
A. Different. B. Lasting. C. Changing. D. Special.

A. How to Be a Curious Person B. A Research on Wikipedia Readers

Do you feel nervous when speaking in front of the class? Many kids do. The good news is that public speaking is a skill you can learn. With practice, you can become more confident. Public speaking helps you express your ideas clearly. This skill is important because it helps you in school, with friends, and in your future job.
Many kids feel worried about public speaking. They may feel nervous or afraid that others will judge them. They talk too fast or forget what to say when scared. Even great speakers had these fears. The key is learning to deal with them.
Good preparation is important. Practice in a comfortable place with family or friends. Read your speech aloud every day to remember your main ideas. Before speaking, take deep breaths to calm yourself. When you speak, remember to use a clear and loud voice. This helps everyone hear you well.
When you speak, stand up straight. If nervous, look at a friendly face. Smiling helps the listeners feel connected to you. If you forget something, it’s okay. Just breathe and check your notes.
Practicing at home can also be fun. For example, you can record yourself with a phone and watch it back. This helps you hear your voice and see your body language. There are many other fun ways to practice, too. These activities build confidence naturally.

Last week, I walked around our school and asked students about the love they experienced. Here are their stories.
A boy told me his mother always encouraged him before exams, which gave him great courage. A girl shared that a stranger shared an umbrella with her on a rainy day, warming her heart. Another student said his teacher stayed after school to help him with his studies.

Have you ever tried something new in your free time? What did you do and how did you feel? What was it like?
Li Ming
Last summer, I joined a pottery (陶艺) class for the first time. I thought it would be easy to make a bowl, but the clay (黏土) was so soft! It kept changing shape in my hands. The teacher showed us how to center the clay and use our hands to shape it slowly. After many tries, I finally made a small cup. It wasn’t perfect, but I felt very proud. Now, I go to the class every Saturday. It’s not just a hobby — it teaches me to be patient.
Zhang Wei
I started learning to cook from my grandmother when I was ten. My first dish was scrambled (炒) eggs with tomatoes. I was so nervous about cutting the tomatoes and adding salt. My family said it was delicious, and that made me really happy. Now, I often cook for my parents when they are busy with work. Cooking for others is a great way to show my love.
Wang Fang
This winter vacation, I decided to learn paper-cutting from an online video. It looked so beautiful and full of traditional Chinese culture. I bought red paper and special scissors. At first, my cuts were not clean, and I even cut my finger a little. But I didn’t give up. After practicing for weeks, I could cut out a nice “Fu” character. I put it on my window to welcome the New Year. I learned that if you keep trying, you can learn anything.

29. What did the writer dream of doing when he was little?
A. Becoming an astronomer. B. Studying animals in the wild.
C. Taking photos of insects. D. Joining the Science Club.
30. How has the writer changed after joining the Science Club?
A. He no longer loves science. B. He prefers to work alone.
C. He learns the value of teamwork. D. He becomes interested in rocks.
31. What does the writer mean by “Many hands make light work”?
A. Working together makes tasks easier. B. Science is full of adventures.
C. It’s important to work quickly. D. Many people enjoy doing science.
C
35. In which part of a magazine can we find the passage?
A. Art. B. Space. C. Education. D. Science.
D
A. Different. B. Lasting. C. Changing. D. Special.
40. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Be a Curious Person B. A Research on Wikipedia Readers
C. Three Different Styles of Curiosity D. The Most Useful Curiosity Style

阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
With these tips and lots of practice, you will become a more confident speaker. So take a deep breath, smile, and share your ideas with the world.
