代词it/they/this/that 指代前句名词;逻辑词 but/so/however 判定关系;复现词直接呼应上下文。
3.段首空必选主题句,段中空必选过渡句,段尾空必选总结句。段首:概括全段中心;段中:衔接前后两句;段尾:总结本段或引出下一段。
4.逻辑词对号入座,按关系直接匹配选项。并列用 and/besides/also;转折用 but/however/though;因果用 so/therefore/ because;举例用 for example/such as。
代词it/they/this/that 均指代前文最近的名词或事件。如2024扬州斑海豹题 “they” 指代湿地,2023盐城数字足迹题“it”指代数字足迹。
4.疑问句按题型应答,肯否固定结构不失误。一般疑问句用 Yes/No 开头回答;特殊疑问词严格对应:when 答时间、where 答地点、why 答 because、how 答方式。2025徐州纪录片判断题遵循此规则。
5.开放题紧扣主题,用万能模板稳拿满分。环保类用 “Protect the environment + spread awareness”;励志类用 “Never give up and work hard”。

These years, many college students choose to join the army (军队) after graduation. Zhao Huan is one of them.
When Zhao Huan was 26 years old, he joined the army and became one of the soldiers (战士) on the top of Changbai Mountain in Jilin Province. The three-year life in the army made him really strong-willed (意志坚强的).
The weather on the mountain is terrible in winter. The snow can reach as deep as 2 metres. The lowest temperature can be -40℃. There are over 200 days a year when the wind speed is nearly 12 metres per second. “It is very difficult to fall asleep with the wind outside crying like a wolf,” Zhao said. Life was hard because of the weather. When the snow cut off the roads, the soldiers needed water most. They had to heat the snow to get water to drink, cook and wash with. To save water, they only took a bath once a month.
Even so, Zhao and his team did not give up. Whatever difficulties they met, they tried their best to finish their tasks. Especially when they were on duty outside in winter, snow hit their faces and they were frozen because of the low temperature. But they put their duty before anything and stood like a statue without a slight move.

People are once again impressed by a recent science fiction movie. In the movie, people on a desert planet wear special suits that turn sweat (汗水) into clean drinking water. Sounds like magic? In fact, in some water-short places on Earth, people recycle waste water in similar ways. Even astronauts in space recycle their water!
You might think, “We have plenty of water on Earth.” But actually, clean water is limited. Some countries are developing better ways to save water. In Germany, there’s an amazing waste water reuse system. This new system separates waste water into different types.
—Rainwater is collected to water the gardens.
—“Gray water” from kitchen and bathroom sinks is used to flush toilets.
—“Black water” from toilets is sent to a local factory to be turned into biogas (沼气).
The purpose of the system is not only to reduce water use but also to provide power for local people.
Perhaps more countries can follow this example. The challenge lies with old houses. Using these new systems in old buildings costs a lot. However, people once thought LED lights were expensive too. Now they’re everywhere. This time, we can make similar changes to save water.
Remember, every drop counts! By using water wisely today. We can make sure there’s enough clean water for everyone tomorrow.

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。
In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made a great invention—the telephone. For the first time in history, people could talk to someone far away just like they were in the same room. But today, phones can do much more than just make calls!
The story of mobile phones began with two-way radios. These early devices (设备) had a big problem—they only worked when people were close to each other. In the 1940s, smart scientists found a way. They built tall radio towers across the country to pass signals (信号) easily.
Everything changed in 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper made the first real mobile phone call. During the 1980s, mobile phones became smaller but were still very expensive. Only rich business people could afford them, and the phones looked like big plastic bricks.
The 1990s brought another big change. Phones became cheaper and smaller, fitting easily in pockets. Soon, almost everyone had one. Text messaging became popular. People started writing short messages instead of making phone calls. Meeting time became more flexible (灵活的) because you could just text “I’ll be 15 minutes late.”
Now we have smartphones—like powerful mini-computers in our pockets. We use them to take photos, watch videos, play games, and even help with housework! Messaging apps let us send videos and long messages easily. While phones help us stay connected, some people worry that we spend too much time on them.
Looking back, it’s amazing how phones have changed. From Bell’s simple telephone to today’s smartphones, this has truly changed our lives. What will phones be able to do next? Only time will tell!

Connected to history
Imagine meeting a craftsman (工匠) in his eighties, who is carving dragons on copper hotpots (铜火锅). You feel like you’ve traveled back two thousand years. That’s the charm of Shanxi in Sight, a six-episode (集) documentary that was on show in March 2025 on CCTV-2.
Filmed over six months, the series explores 50 historic places across Datong, Taiyuan, and Yuncheng. It follows nearly 100 local people—from craftsmen to shopkeepers. It shows a slow and thoughtful journey to the viewers.
Instead of filming old buildings as cold and empty places, the team tried to show them through the eyes of local people. “We didn’t want the buildings to feel like museums,” said director Zhou Lifen. “So we chose people living in Shanxi—shopkeepers, craftsmen, farmers—whose lives are closely connected to these old buildings. Their warmth brings history to life.” In the documentary, viewers meet an artist in Datong who is making knife-cut noodles, a sculptor who has spent thirty years recreating cave figures (人物), and a craftsman who protects swans along the Yellow River.
“In today’s cultural tourism, documentaries need to do more than just tell—they need to make people think,” said Zhou Lifen. Shanxi in Sight turns the province’s popularity into lasting cultural pride and excitement for travel. When a documentary helps understand the past through the warmth of common people, it produces a strong feeling that’s truly unforgettable. 阅读短文,回答下面5个问题,将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。(每题答案不超过10个词)
Fashion trends (趋势) are around us, and can be exciting. A trend used to happen in a 20-year cycle, but the latest development of the Internet and clothing business has increasingly cut the length of the cycle short. Now, it seems there comes a new fashion trend every couple of months, but it still follows the same stages:
●A trend is usually first brought in during a big fashion show. Reporters, writers, and some other important people collect what they have learned in the show and predict a trend in the near future.
●Then the trend is talked about online and finally worn by famous people to make it better accepted, which leads to the rise of the trend.
●Once the trend becomes popular, it will go to the public soon. Large clothing companies and shops begin following the trend so that everyone can get their hands on it. This is when the trend gets to the highest point.
●After that, the trend usually falls and becomes out of date. However, this is not always the end, as trends happen in broader cycles and most get popular again.
Trends can be a great way to try something new and test your style. A survey says some people enjoy following trends because they keep fashion exciting and provide fresh ideas. However, others may not think so, especially when a trend doesn’t agree with how they feel about themselves. Trends can be fun, but sometimes prove a waste of money because many simply see trends as brands (品牌). So, should we follow fashion trends?
Clearly, there’s no right answer whether to follow trends or not depends on how they go with your values, spending, and sense of self. It does not hurt to watch trend reports but never choose to follow them unless you really think they fit with your personal style.
1.How long does a new fashion trend last now?

5.Do you prefer brands when buying clothes? Why or why not?

4.根据“others may not think so, especially when a trend doesn’t agree with how they feel about themselves”可知,部分人因潮流与自我认知不符而不喜欢追随。故填Because the trends don’t agree with their self-feeling.

阅读下面短文,回答短文后的问题。(前3题每题答案不超过10个词)。
It was morning, and the new sun was shining gold across the gentle sea. A crowd of a thousand seagulls (海鸥) were fighting for bits of food. But far away from these birds, Jonathan Seagull was practicing flying alone.
Most seagulls don’t trouble themselves to learn more than the simplest facts of flight—how to get food and come back. For most seagulls, it is not flying that matters, but eating. For this seagull, however, flight is much more important than eating. More than anything else, Jonathan Seagull loved to fly.
This kind of thinking, he found, is not the way to make oneself popular with other birds. Even his parents were unhappy.
“See here, Jonathan,” said his father not unkindly. “Winter isn’t far away. If you don’t study how to get food, you might die of hunger in the future. Flying is all very well, but you can’t eat flight, you know.”
Jonathan understood what his father meant. For the next few days he tried to act like the other seagulls; he really tried, screaming and fighting with other seagulls for fish and bread. But he couldn’t make it work.
“It’s all so worthless,” he thought, “I could be spending all this time learning to fly. There’s so much to learn”
It wasn’t long before Jonathan Seagull was off by himself again, far out at sea, hungry, happy, learning. The subject was speed, and in a week’s practice he learned more about speed than the fastest seagull alive.
1.What did Jonathan Seagull like doing most?
2.What did Father mean by saying “you can’t eat flight”?
3.What did Jonathan think of fighting with others for food?
4.Do you think Jonathan will die of hunger finally? Why or why not?
【答案】1.He liked flying/to fly most.
2.He wished Jonathan to study how to get food/ to know the importance of food.
3.It was worthless/meaningless/not meaningful.
24.No, he won’t. He can fly fastest so he can get food faster than other seagulls./Yes, he will. Although he can fly fastest, he still doesn't know how to get food.
【导语】本文主要介绍海鸥Jonathan喜欢独自练习飞行,即使没有食物果腹,最后他学会了比其他海鸥更快的速度。
1.根据“More than anything else, Jonathan Seagull loved to fly.”可知,Jonathan最热爱飞翔,故填He liked flying/to fly most.
2.根据“If you don’t study how to get food, you might die of hunger in the future. Flying is all very well, but you can’t eat flight, you know.”可知,父亲说“you can’t eat flight”意在提醒Jonathan要先解决生存需要,即先学会如何获取食物/了解食物的重要性。故填He wished Jonathan to study how to get food/ to know the importance of food.
3.根据“It’s all so worthless”可知,他认为争抢食物毫无意义。故填It was worthless/meaningless/not meaningful.
4.本题属于开放性试题,言之有理即可。参考答案:No, he won’t. He can fly fastest so he can get food faster than other seagulls./Yes, he will. Although he can fly fastest, he still doesn’t know how to get food.

I’m Li Ming. I live in a nice neighbourhood in the countryside. There’s a school, a flower shop, a hospital, two book shops and a big supermarket in it. My neighbours are kind and helpful. Some of them are volunteers. They have many kinds of skills and often help us with all kinds of problems.
Usually there is a “helping hands” meeting at the weekend at the community centre. We can go there when we need help with our problems. Computer engineers are popular. Every day, we hear sounds all around us—some soft, some loud. But do you know that loud sounds can harm your hearing?
Sounds are measured (测量) in decibels (分贝). Look at the chart—some sounds are safe for our ears, but when a sound goes over 85 decibels, it can be harmful to our hearing. To reduce the risk of hearing loss, we shall pay attention to the loudness of the noise, the distance we are to it and how long we listen to it.
Noise levels can be measured by sound-level meters (噪声计), but you probably don’t always carry one with you. So how can you tell whether noises are too loud or not? Ask yourself: Do you have to raise your voice to be heard? Do you find it hard to hear someone about a meter away from you? Do the noises make your ears hurt or ring for some time? If your answer is YES to any of these, that probably means the noises are too loud.
Headphones are especially tricky. Many people enjoy using them, but they often listen to loud music for too long, or keep the volume (音量) so high that even other people can hear the noise from their headphones. These can lead to hearing loss.
Your hearing is a gift. You need it for learning, communicating, and enjoying the world. Once your hearing is harmed, it may never come back.
1.According to the chart, what sounds can harm your hearing?
2.How can you know if the noises are too loud? (Give 2 examples.)
3.Why is hearing important? What can you do to protect it?
【答案】1.TV, headphones, rock concerts, and fireworks.
2.When/If I have to raise my voice to be heard; When/ If I find it hard to hear someone about a meter away from me; When/ If the noises make my ears hurt or ring for some time.
3.Because we need it for learning, communicating, and enjoying the world. We should not use headphones for too long./We should keep away from the loud noises./We can turn down the music./We can use headphones less.
【导语】本文主要介绍了高分贝噪音对听力的危害、如何判断噪音是否过大以及保护听力的重要性。
1.根据“Look at the chart—some sounds are safe for our ears, but when a sound goes over 85 decibels, it can be harmful to our hearing.” TV, headphones, rock concerts, and fireworks.
2.根据“So how can you tell whether noises are too loud or not? Ask yourself: Do you have to raise your voice to be heard? Do you find it hard to hear someone about a meter away from you? Do the noises make your ears hurt or ring for some time? If your answer is YES to any of these, that probably means the noises are too loud.”可知,如果噪音太大时,我必须提高声音才能被听到,我会听不到一米远的人说话,或者这些噪音会让我的车辆受损或响一段时间。从中任选两个回答即可。故填When/If I have to raise my voice to be heard; When/If I find it hard to hear someone about a meter away from me; When/ If the noises make my ears hurt or ring for some time.
3.根据“You need it for learning, communicating, and enjoying the world.”可知,听力之所以重要是因为我们需要它来学习、交流、享受这个世界。至于如何保护听力,这部分是开放性题目,答案不唯一,言之有理即可。故填Because we need it for learning, communicating, and enjoying the world. We should not use headphones for too long./We should keep away from the loud noises./We can turn down the music./We can use headphones less.

Have you ever heard of Yu Tong Shop? It is the only place in Guangzhou where people make traditional Cantonese pastry molds(广式糕饼模具) by hand. The shop is run by 65-year-old Yu Zhaoji. He has been making molds for over 50 years, continuing a family tradition. Yu’s great-great-grandfather started the business about 160 years ago.
For centuries, handmade molds have played an important role in making Cantonese pastries. Before handmade molds started to become less commonly used around the year 2000, Yu Tong Shop was always busy with orders, especially from the 1970s to the 1990s.
Today, there are fewer traditional Cantonese pastry mold makers. Making molds by hand is slow and requires special carving(雕刻) skills. The process makes handmade molds much more expensive than machine-made ones. “Speed is everything today,” Yu explained, “but learning this skill takes years of practice.” Although machines are faster, Yu believes they can never truly take the place of human hands.
To protect traditions, Guangzhou opened its first intangible cultural heritage district(非物质文化遗产街区) in August 2020.With the support of the government, Yu moved his shop there. Now, he introduces his skills to tourists, and he also teaches them to make molds.
“Some people join me for fun, and others for a challenge,” Yu said. He believes handmade items are special and meaningful because they are made with care and carry warmth. He adds, “If you make a mold yourself, even an imperfect one, the pastries made with it will taste better.”
1.What can people do in Yu Tong Shop?
2.After the year 2000, why wasn’t Yu Tong Shop as busy as before?
3.What makes handmade molds much more expensive than machine-made ones?
4.What does Yu Zhaoji think of handmade items?
5.Do you like handmade molds? Why?
【答案】1.Learn to make molds and learn the skills 2.Handmade molds were less commonly used. 3.Being slow and needing special carving skills. 4.They are meaningful, made with care and warmth. 5.Yes, I do. Because they carry cultural value and warmth.
【导语】本文介绍了广州余同店的相关情况,讲述其作为广式糕饼模具传统手作工坊的历史、当下手工模具面临的挑战,以及店主余肇记为传承非遗文化所做的努力,体现了手工制品的独特价值。
1.根据 “Now, he introduces his skills to tourists, and he also teaches them to make molds.” 可知,人们可以在余同店学习制作模具,也能了解相关技艺。故填Learn to make molds and learn the skills.
2.根据 “Before handmade molds started to become less commonly used around the year 2000” 可知,2000年后手工模具的使用减少,因此余同店不如以前忙碌。故填Handmade molds were less commonly used.
3.根据 “Making molds by hand is slow and requires special carving skills. The process makes handmade molds much more expensive than machine-made ones.” 可知,手工制作模具耗时且需要特殊雕刻技艺,这使其比机器模具更昂贵。故填Being slow and needing special carving skills.
4.根据 “He believes handmade items are special and meaningful because they are made with care and carry warmth.” 可知,余肇记认为手工制品特别且有意义,饱含用心与温度。故填They are meaningful, made with care and warmth.
5.本题为开放性问题,答案不唯一,结合手工模具的文化、实用价值等角度合理作答即可。故填Yes, I do. Because they carry cultural value and warmth.(或No, I don’t. Because they are expensive and not as convenient as machine-made ones.)

Laura and her husband, Mike, started their gardening journey last year. It has changed their lives.
Laura has ADHD (注意缺陷障碍), and both have some health problems. Without any experience, they felt really stressed out at the start. However, with the help of their neighbour Wally, they broke their tasks down into small, easy steps. They started by growing radishes (萝卜) and salad leaves. Even though Laura faces health challenges, she finds that gardening improves both her physical and mental health. It has taught Laura to love nature’s surprises. It has also helped her focus on what’s happening right now. This used to be very hard for her because of her illness.

Wendy Chen decided to challenge herself by climbing Mount Tai, a well-known mountain in eastern China. But there was one problem: she couldn’t find a friend to join her for the five-hour trip. Rather than give up her plan, the 25-year-old hired a “climbing buddy,” a young man with rich outdoor experience, to be with her and support her to the 5,000-foot peak.
Known in Chinese as “pei pa”, the young Chinese join strangers on their journeys up mountains for a price. It’s becoming popular in 2025. Young, healthy and active, often college students, advertise themselves on social media platforms, with profiles showing their height, fitness level and hiking experience. They usually charge between 200 to 600 yuan per trip.
During the climb, these “buddies” will do anything to push the climbers to keep going: from singing, telling jokes, playing music, verbal encouragement, going so far as carrying their bags, holding their hands, and pulling them.
Chen and her climbing buddy’s journey began at around 8:00 p.m., so that she could arrive in time for the famous sunrise. After checking her fitness level, her climbing buddy planned a suitable route and carried her backpack the whole way. At the moment the sun rose, he showed Chen a national flag so that she could take a photo. Sally loved cars more than anything else. This spring she thought of building a go-kart to enter for the Go-Go Race. So she asked her dad for help.
“Well,” he said. “How about this: you do some research first and then come back to me with a design.”
A week later, Sally brought her notes and drawings to Dad. She named her go-kart “Blue Lightning”. Dad looked over her work, thinking. “Well, that’s interesting,” he said. “Have a try. Just build Blue Lightning as you’ve designed.”
Over three weekends of hard work, Sally turned her design into a real, working go-kart and painted it light blue. Dad asked her to take it for a test drive. Sally agreed.
After she did that, Sally drove back to Dad. “Well,” she said. “Now I know why you wanted me to have a test drive.”
“Oh, do you?” he said. “Please share.”
“When I drove fast, there was a lot of push-back,” she said. “I think it’s because of the lightning bolt shape.”
“Very good!” Dad said.
“So, why didn’t you tell me about that problem in the first place?” Sally asked.
Dad laughed. “Where’s the fun in that? If you give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. But if you teach a man to fish, he’ll eat for a lifetime.”
Sally said, “I see. Anyway, designing is half the fun!”
Dad smiled. “Good. Sometimes, learning happens during the process. We learn how to do something right by doing it a few times first and making mistakes along the way.”

The air is thin and we have to rest several times on the short hike from camp. To our left, snow-covered mountains disappear into clouds that seem almost close enough to touch. On the plain in front of us, we can just make out a herd of graceful animals. This is why we’re here—to observe Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊).
Tibetan antelopes live on the plains of Xizang, Xinjiang, and Qinghai. Watching them move slowly across the green grass, I’m struck by their beauty. I’m also reminded of the danger they were in. They were once hunted for their valuable fur.
My guide is Zhaxi, a villager from Changtang. He works at the Changtang National Nature Reserve. The reserve is a shelter for the animals and plants of northwestern Xizang. To Zhaxi, the land is sacred (神圣的) and protecting the wildlife is a way of life. “We’re not trying to save the animals,” he says. “Actually, we’re trying to save ourselves.”
The 1980s and 1990s were bad times for the Tibetan antelope. The population dropped by more than 50 percent. Hunters shot antelopes to make profits. Their habitats became smaller as new roads and railways were built.
In order to save this species from disappearing, the Chinese government placed it under national protection. Zhaxi and other volunteers watched over the antelopes day and night to keep them safe from attacks. Bridges and gates were added to let the antelopes move easily and keep them safe from cars and trains.
The measures were effective. The antelope population has recovered and in June 2015, the Tibetan antelope was removed from the endangered species list. The government, however, does not plan to stop the protection programmes, since the threats to the Tibetan antelope have not yet disappeared.
In the evening, I drink a cup of tea and watch the stars. I think about the antelopes and what Zhaxi told me. Much is being done to protect wildlife, but if we really want to save the planet, we must change our way of life. Only when we learn to live in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to wildlife and to our planet.
1.Where do Tibetan antelopes live?
2.How did Zhaxi and other volunteers keep Tibetan antelopes safe from attacks?
3.When was the Tibetan antelope removed from the endangered species list?

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Because the Earth looks like a ball, the Sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the Earth is having day and the other half night. At the equator (赤道), day and night are always the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The Sun rises at 6 o’clock in the morning and sets at 6 o’clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted (北极倾斜) towards the Sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator, nights are longer than days. For six months the North Pole is tilted away from the Sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sun. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator, nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of nights. Summer is the season of long days.
1.How many hours does “day” mean in “days in a year”?
2.Why does half of the Earth have night?
3.What’s the day length at the equator?
4.When the North Pole tilts towards the Sun, which part of the Earth has longer days?
5.How does Earth’s tilt affect human life?

The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar. In different cultures, horses stand for similar things, but with occasional (偶尔的) exceptions.
In China, the horse carries many positive meanings, such as smart and energetic, and we can see them in Chinese idioms. For example, a talented person is often called “qianlima”, a horse that covers a thousand li a day. And someone who is good at finding talent is referred to as “bole”, a person who could tell a good horse by its looks in ancient China. In Chinese, the phrase “daomei” is often used to describe bad luck. Where did daomei come from?
It is said that daomei comes from the dialect (方言) of the Zhejiang region during the Ming Dynasty. It has something to do with the keju testing system, or the imperial (皇家的) examinations that were given in ancient China.
At the time, there were no entrance examinations for colleges and universities like today. If someone wanted to become a civil servant (文职官员), that person would need to take the keju tests.
The keju testing system had several tests at different levels. Through the highest-level tests, called “dianshi”, the best candidates (候选人) were chosen by the emperor.
The keju tests were hard and competition was fierce (激烈的). During the Ming Dynasty, candidates in the Zhejiang region would put up a flagpole (旗杆) in front of their home gate, wishing for good luck on the tests. Local people called the flagpole “mei” at the time. If someone passed a test, the flagpole would be kept up. If they failed, the flagpole would be removed, which was called “daomei”, meaning “the flagpole falls”.
As time passed, daomei came to refer not only to “failing a test”, but to describe being unlucky in general. The Chinese character for mei was also changed from “楣” to today’s “霉”, since the two have the same pronunciation.

Lately, when looking through Chinese social media, you can’t miss the four Chinese characters “Ai Ni Lao Ji”. At first, it might look like an everyday greeting, but it’s actually a clever development. It borrows the structure of “Love you, Mom. See you tomorrow!” and simply exchanges “Mom” for “Lao Ji,” a playful word for “self.” In other words, it’s a warm reminder to love yourself.
The reason why the simple words has become popular is that it fills an emotional gap. In Chinese culture, people often find it hard to say “I love you”, even to themselves. Besides, we’re taught to care about others first. But in doing so, we sometimes forget to stop and ask ourselves, “Am I OK today?”
Think about what you may have done. You stayed up until 3:00 a.m. finishing a group project, but the teacher checked for only thirty seconds and didn’t say anything like “Good job”. Maybe you smiled through a party, tried to please everyone, only to feel empty on the way home. Now, you can actually say “Ai Ni Lao Ji” to yourself.
Psychologists call this self-compassion, and research shows it can not only lower stress but also lead to self-confidence. When we speak to ourselves with the same kindness we offer to a close friend, we go out of sadness faster and dare to try again.
So, when life is busy next time, just say “Ai Ni Lao Ji”, enjoy your favorite milk tea, or give yourself a hug. The world will still move forward, but you’ll be standing a little straighter at the center of it.
1.What does “Ai Ni Lao Ji” remind people to do?
2.Why is “Ai Ni Lao Ji” widely spread on social media?
3.What is the effect of self-compassion?
4.What will you do to practice “Ai Ni Lao Ji” in your daily life?
【答案】1.To love themselves. 2.It fills an emotional gap. 3.It can lower stress and lead to self-confidence. 4.I will say it to myself and drink my favorite milk tea.

3.第四段先点明“Ai Ni Lao Ji”背后是自我关怀这一概念,接着说明研究发现的其作用:“it can not only lower stress but also lead to self-confidence”,直接得出答案。
4.最后一段给出了践行“Ai Ni Lao Ji”的例子,如“say ‘Ai Ni Lao Ji’, enjoy your favorite milk tea, or give yourself a hug”,结合日常生活实际,围绕关爱自己的角度作答即可,答案不唯一。

Bad breath, or halitosis (口臭), can be a serious problem, especially when you’re talking to your friend.
Bad breath is caused by some germs (细菌) that grow in the mouth. When you don’t brush in a proper way, germs will live in your mouth and between your teeth and make your breath smell bad. Certain foods, especially ones like garlic and onions can cause bad breath. Smoking is also an important cause of bad breath.
Some people say that mouthwash (漱口水) will make bad breath go away, but it isn’t true. Mouthwash only stops bad breath for a short time.
Some people also say that if you brush your teeth, you will not have bad breath. The truth is that most people only brush their teeth for 30 to 45 seconds and it just doesn’t work. To clean all of your teeth, you should brush for at least 2 minutes and at least twice a day. Remember to brush your tongue, too—bacteria love to stay there.
If you do brush properly, but your bad breath still exists, visit your dentist for regular cleanings. You may have a medical problem like gum disease.
If you don’t want to have bad breath, make sure you’re taking care of your teeth and mouth well.
1.What things can cause bad breath according to the passage? (不超过10个词)
2.How long do most people brush their teeth according to the passage? (不超过10个词)

Many students have problems with grammar, speaking or writing when preparing for tests, but vocabulary (词汇) is the most common one. Maybe we can make it if we can get some new ways to memorize new words. One way you can have a try is “structured reviewing” (结构化复习).
Structured reviewing means continuous (持续的) reviewing of what we have learned in order to better understand it. We all agree that people forget information they have learned if they don’t review it in time.
Chart of Steps of “Structured Reviewing”
Memorize five sentences with new words→________→Review them once a day for 5 days→Review them once a week→Review them once a month
Learn five new words every day. We can learn five different sentences with a new word in each sentence. On the first day in the early morning, we can write them down a few times while reading them aloud so that we can memorize them.
Moreover, we need to review them six times a day, including after the first lesson, after lunch at school and after dinner.
On the second day in the early morning, we go over the first day’s sentences. Then we learn five new sentences with five new words just as we did the day before.
For each day’s sentences, after we have reviewed them for five consecutive days, we just need to review them once a week. Then once a month.
Through this method, we store them in our long-term memory and will never forget them.
Result of using this method
I used to hate new English words. I became even angry when I lost points because of the words. But there was no use—new words couldn’t be avoided. So, I changed my ways of memorizing the words. Now I review them in time. It seems to work well. —Frank
Many of us usually learn words separately and silently from the word list in our textbook, so we often write sentences with mistakes. We should make up our own sentences with new words and read them aloud. In this way, we can remember the new words better.
1.What is the most common problem when students prepare for tests?
2.What is the second step of “structured reviewing” in the Chart?
3.How does Frank remember the new words now?
4.What is this article mainly about?
【答案】1.Vocabulary. 2.Review them six times a day. 3.By reviewing them in time. 4.A method to memorize new words.
【导语】本文介绍了“结构化复习”这一词汇记忆方法,包括每天学习五个单词、多次复习、阶段性回顾等步骤,并通过Frank的亲身经历说明其有效性。
1.根据第一段“but vocabulary is the most common one”可知,学生在备考时最常见的问题是词汇。故填Vocabulary.
2.根据“Chart of Steps”及文中“we need to review them six times a day”可知,结构化复习的第二步是每天复习六次。故填Review them six times a day.
3.根据Frank的分享“Now I review them in time.”可知,他现在通过及时复习来记忆新单词。故填By reviewing them in time.
4.全文围绕“结构化复习”这一词汇记忆方法展开,介绍了其步骤、原理和应用效果。故填A method to memorize new words.

Casting a Brick to Invite Jade
Zhao Gu was a poet in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). He was very gifted at writing poems and was spoken highly of by the famous poet Du Mu.
At that time, there was another poet called Chang Jian. While he could also write good poems, he admired the works of Zhao Gu very much. One day, Zhao Gu traveled to Suzhou, and Chang Jian happened to be in Suzhou as well. Hearing the news of Zhao Gu’s arrival, Chang Jian was very excited. “I should not miss this good opportunity,” he told himself. “I must have Zhao Gu leave behind some good poems.”
However, he didn’t know how he could ask Zhao Gu to write poems for him. He thought for a while, and an idea came to him. He thought of Lingyan Temple, a wonderful place in Suzhou. “Now that Zhao Gu is in Suzhou, he will definitely visit Lingyan Temple. If I write half a poem in the temple, it may arouse his interest in finishing the poem,” Chang Jian thought to himself. Then, he secretly wrote two lines on a wall in the temple.
Sure enough, Zhao Gu paid a visit to the famous temple the following day. Seeing those two lines on the wall, he became interested. He then added another two lines to form a complete poem. Chang Jian used his two not-very-good lines to invite a wonderful poem completed by Zhao Gu. What Chang Jian had done, someone said, was just like casting a brick to invite jade (抛砖引玉).
Later, people often use this idiom to describe the act of using their own writing to invite the perfect articles of others. This idiom is usually used to express modesty.

Silk flowers, called juan hua in Chinese, are a very old craft (工艺). It has been around for a long time and is a beautiful part of Chinese art and creativity.
Silk flowers are fake flowers made by hand using silk cloth. They look so real that you might even think they are natural flowers! Long ago, these flowers were used to decorate palaces and temples, and even used as hair decorations for women. Today, people still love them for their beauty and cultural meaning.
This art started in the Tang Dynasty and became very popular during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Beijing became the centre of this craft, and skilled artists passed their skills to their children and grandchildren. In 2008, Beijing silk flower making was officially added to China’s list of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产).
Making silk flowers takes a lot of time. First, good silk cloth is chosen and coloured with pretty dyes (染料). Then, the silk is cut into shapes like petals (花瓣) and leaves using special patterns and the petals are shaped using tools like tweezers and then hot irons to make them look real. After that, the petals and leaves are glued together to make a full flower. Finally, artists add details, like painting lines, on the leaves or adding tiny drops to make them look more lifelike.
Silk flowers are not just pretty decorations, but they also show the skill and hard work of Chinese artists. Moreover, they mean good luck and beauty in Chinese culture. This craft teaches us to be patient, careful, and hard-working. It also reminds us to love and protect our cultural traditions.

While many families across China reunited to celebrate the Spring Festival, Zhao Deling and Sheng Mingfen stayed on duty at the Xiannyu Cave management station of the Dashahe Nature Reserve (大沙河自然保护区) in Guizhou province. The hard-working couple, both forest guards, are responsible for nearly 467 hectares of protected areas, ensuring the safety of wild animals and plants.
The Dashahe Nature Reserve was set up in 1984 and became a national-level nature reserve in May 2018. Covering an area of 26,990 hectares, it is home to endangered species (物种) such as the Tonkin langur.
Zhao has served as a forest guard in the reserve for many years. His wife, Sheng, joined the team in 2020. Every day, they start work early in the morning. One guards an important checkpoint to keep out anyone who’s not allowed in, while the other patrols (巡逻) the forest. Their tasks include recording wildlife activities and clearing overgrown plants around signs and infrared cameras used for monitoring and protection.
“From early morning to midnight, there’s little time to rest,” said Zhao. “Most visitors leave when they are told the area is protected, but some visitors ignore (忽视) the rules, so the patrols must continue.”
A full round-trip patrol usually takes more than three hours. Loneliness is another big challenge, as the main part of the protected area is far from other people. While on patrol, the couple face non-stop uncertainty—never knowing what wild animals might endanger their lives.
Even though the hours are long and the work is lonely, the couple find meaning in their day-to-day duties. “Watching the changes along our way makes time pass easily. You can notice many small changes day by day,” Zhao said.
Having known each other since their early teens, Zhao and Sheng have set up a family and raised two children. During the Spring Festival, their daughters visited them for a family get-together.
“Maybe the station is not as comfortable as the house in the village, but once our family is together, happiness fills every corner of the checkpoint,” Sheng said.

Zhao said, “Life is not easy on the top of Changbai Mountain. Thinking of the lights of thousands of homes, I think my efforts pay off. For me, all the difficulties can be overcome in the future. The experience of being a soldier here really means a lot to me.”
1.How old was Zhao Huan when he joined the army?
2.How is the weather on the mountain in winter?
3.What did the soldiers need most when the snow cut off the roads?
4.Did Zhao and his team give up when they met difficulties?
5.Why did Zhao say that the experience meant a lot to him?

回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过6个词。
1.What do people wear to get clean drinking water in the movie?
2.How many types of waste water are reused in the new system?
3.What is one of the purposes of the new system in Germany?

请将答案写在答题卡上。
1.When did Alexander Graham Bell invent the telephone?

3.Who made the first real mobile phone call?
4.How can smartphones help us in our lives? (请给出两个例子)

As one viewer wrote online, “This isn’t just a travel show—it’s a chance to feel history in daily life.”

2.Who usually first realizes a new fashion trend?
3.Which situation means the trend has reached the highest point?
4.Why do some people dislike following trends according to the survey?
5.Do you prefer brands when buying clothes? Why or why not?

On April 19, the world’s first half-marathon for humanoid (人形的) robots was held in Beijing. The robots waited beside human runners, starting from the same line.
“I saw many robots running. Some were surprisingly fast, others had very lovely designs, and their running styles were quite different,” said Zhang Huihui, who took part in the race.
During the 21-kilometer-long race, the robots had to run on two legs. Some even wore running shoes. Each robot was supported by a team of human guides, operators (操作员) and engineers. They could have their batteries changed during the race. Teams could even use new robots when the old ones could no longer run.
There were 20 teams in the race and six of them made it to the end. Tiangong Ultra won the first in two hours and 40 minutes. “It crossed the finish line about 30 minutes earlier than expected,” said Xiong Youjun, CEO of a robot center. “In general, all the robots today could deal with challenges such as turns and speed bumps. We made history together.”
“Robots’ completing the race isn’t the finish line. It’s the starting point for the growth of the robot industry,” said Liang Liang, from Yizhuang’s Administrative Committee.
Although the robots fell from time to time, the event proved that they could do real-life tasks. Liang added, “Their small steps today will become giant leaps for human technological progress tomorrow.”
1.What did Zhang Huihui say about robots’ running styles?
2.Who supported the robots to finish the race?
3.How many robots crossed the finish line?
4.What did the robots’ half-marathon event prove?

I’m Li Ming. I live in a nice neighbourhood in the countryside. There’s a school, a flower shop, a hospital, two book shops and a big supermarket in it. My neighbours are kind and helpful. Some of them are volunteers. They have many kinds of skills and often help us with all kinds of problems.
Usually there is a “helping hands” meeting at the weekend at the community centre. We can go there when we need help with our problems. Computer engineers are popular. They help us check our computers. We can also find someone to fix things like broken washing machines or fridges. From time to time some lawyers help us learn about laws.
Students can get help with their homework. There are some college students among the volunteers and they are always ready to help. Volunteers also help the old people. Some of them often visit the old people and do some shopping for them. Sometimes some volunteers help the old people tidy their flats.
Just as the saying goes, “Close neighbours are better than distant relatives.” In the neighbourhood we are like a big family. To us, the home is not only the house we live in, but also the neighbourhood we belong to. We all work hard to make it an even better place.
I’m very lucky to live in such a lovely neighbourhood.

Why?

Laura and her husband, Mike, started their gardening journey last year. It has changed their lives.
Laura has ADHD (注意缺陷障碍), and both have some health problems. Without any experience, they felt really stressed out at the start. However, with the help of their neighbour Wally, they broke their tasks down into small, easy steps. They started by growing radishes (萝卜) and salad leaves. Not every try was successful-and that’s okay. They learned important lessons, like how much to water each time.

Even though Laura faces health challenges, she finds that gardening improves both her physical and mental health. It has taught Laura to love nature’s surprises. It has also helped her focus on what’s happening right now. This used to be very hard for her because of her illness.
Besides, it provides her with a lot of fruits and vegetables while creating many happy family memories.

Though Chen felt his photography skills still had room to improve, she regarded her climbing buddy as “satisfactory.” Chen was supposed to pay 350 yuan, but she was so pleased that she offered 50 yuan more.

That encouraged Sally and she worked even harder. When she showed Dad her new go-kart, he nodded with pride.
Finally came the race. Sally wasn’t worried about whether she would win-in her mind, she had already won, by building something better than ever before.
1.Why did Sally want to build a go-kart?
2.How long did it take Sally to design her go-kart?
3.What did Sally’s dad do after she built her go-kart?
4.Why did Sally think she had already won the race?

4.Why did Tibetan antelopes’ habitats become smaller and smaller in the 1980s and 1990s?
5.What can we do to protect endangered wildlife like Tibetan antelopes? (请自拟一句话作答)

The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar. In different cultures, horses stand for similar things, but with occasional (偶尔的) exceptions.
In China, the horse carries many positive meanings, such as smart and energetic, and we can see them in Chinese idioms. For example, a talented person is often called “qianlima”, a horse that covers a thousand li a day. And someone who is good at finding talent is referred to as “bole”, a person who could tell a good horse by its looks in ancient China. Other horse-related phrases in Chinese include “madaochenggong”, which means instant success and “longmajingshen”, which means full of energy.
Horses are also said to have powerful brains with “excellent memories”, according to Discovery News. Maybe that’s why a Chinese idiom goes: “An old horse knows the way.”
In other cultures, horses are also important and special. In the Middle Ages, the horse was a symbol of chivalry (骑士精神) and nobility (高贵品质) in Western societies. In fact, the word “chivalry” comes from the Old French word “cheval”, which meant horse. The idea of chivalry helped to shape the 19th-century image of the “gentleman”, which was known for good manners, courage and loyalty (忠诚) to friends.
Since the horse is honored as a symbol of energy, loyalty, strong will and intelligence. people born in the Year of the Horse are also believed to have these great qualities.
1.What kind of person is often called “qianlima”?
2.Are horses also important and special in other cultures?
3.Where was the horse a symbol of chivalry and nobility?

1.What does “daomei” mean in modern Chinese?
2.Which province does the term “daomei” come from?
3.What did people have to do to become an official in the Ming Dynasty?
4.What did “mei” refer to at first according to the article?
5.What did “daomei” mean for civil servant candidates during the Ming Dynasty?

(不超过10个词)
3.What is the right way to clean all of your teeth?

2.Why did Chang Jian write two lines on the wall of the temple?
3.How did Zhao Gu deal with it when he saw the two lines on the wall?
4.What do you think of Chang Jian? Give your reasons.

1.When did the art of making silk flowers start according to the passage?
2.How many main steps are there in making silk flowers?
3.What do the silk flowers represent in Chinese culture?
4.How can we learn more information about this old craft as teenagers?

1.When was Dashahe Nature Reserve set up?
2.Why must the patrols continue?
3.How long does a full round-trip patrol usually take?
4.What do you think of the couple? Why do you think so? (Please give two reasons.)

During the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), Shang Yang, a reformer (改革家) in the State of Qin, wanted to carry out new laws. However, people didn’t trust the government’s orders (命令) at that time. To build trust, Shang Yang came up with a clever idea.
He ordered his men to put a three-zhang-long bamboo pole (竹竿) at the south gate of the capital’s market. Then he announced to the people, “Whoever can carry this pole to the north gate will get ten pieces of gold.” Everyone felt doubtful and no one was brave enough to try. They thought the reward was too good to be true.
Seeing this, Shang Yang raised the reward to 50 pieces of gold. Finally, a brave man stepped forward. He carried the pole to the north gate easily. Shang Yang gave him the 50 pieces of gold as promised right away. People were shocked (震惊的)—they realized the government kept its word.
After this, Shang Yang put his new laws into practice. People believed the laws would be carried out strictly, so they followed them closely. The reforms made Qin stronger and helped it become the ruler of all China later. In a village school in Hubei, teachers find that mobile phone addiction (瘾) has become a new problem among teenagers. Their students play games on mobile phones after returning home, and some of them don’t complete homework. When they’re in class, they still think about their games.
Pan Jiani, 11, likes watching funny short videos on the phone. Her parents are working in the city. Now she lives with her grandparents. “If she stays with us, the time of playing on her mobile phone can be limited. If we’re not around, she sometimes plays for a long time,” said her grandpa.
According to the teachers, boys prefer to play games. Pan Longye, 11, likes watching cartoons and playing games on the phone. His mother said, “Sometimes I give the mobile phone to him, and then I’m so busy that I forget it. In this situation, he plays for two or three hours.”
Research shows that when it comes to playing on mobile phones, the city children can be controlled by their parents, while the village children can hardly be controlled by their grandparents.
How can families and society help solve this problem? Since most left-behind children (留守儿童) live with their grandparents, it’s necessary for the elderly people to organize activities for children after school, like doing some housework and farm work. The Internet should also provide left-behind children with interesting learning resources, which can draw their attention and help them avoid harmful information online.
1.What bad influence does mobile phone addiction have on the students’ studies?
2.What can the elderly people do to help deal with the problem?
3.What is the main purpose of providing online learning resources to left-behind children?
4.As a teenager, how can you use mobile phones wisely?

Are you tired of feeling anxious (焦虑) when faced with challenging situations or high-pressure tasks? Do you wish you could perform at your best, even in the most stressful environments? If you practice how to remain calm under pressure, you can manage stress better and perform better in work and life.
The Yerkes-Dodson curve explains the relationship between stress and performance. The big idea of it is that people perform better at medium levels of stress. It highlights the importance of stress management techniques (技巧) and finds ways to control and manage stress levels to avoid negative effects on performance. Imagine stress on a scale of 1-10, where 1 is low and 10 is high. If stress is in the mid-range, say 5, 6, or 7, you can perform better.
That means when you feel your stress is too low, you need to turn it up. And when your stress is too high, you need to turn it down.
How can you lower your level of stress if it’s too high? Practicing mindfulness is a technique that can help lower your level of stress and build your awareness, enabling you to react more effectively to stressors. Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment. You can become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. This increased awareness allows you to choose suitable techniques to manage stress. For example, if you notice your mind starting to race or become fixed on negative thoughts, you can change your focus and calm your mind. Also, if you notice discomfort in your body, you can use physical techniques such as deep breathing or stretching to calm your body down.
If your level of stress is too low, you can learn how to raise it to perform better. You can try techniques such as goal setting and positive self-talk. For example, if you want to improve your running performance, set a goal to run a certain distance or time within a specific (特定的) period. When preparing for the running event, use positive self-talk such as“I have trained hard for this, and I can achieve my goal.”
By practicing these techniques and focusing on what you can control, you can unlock your full potential (潜能) and perform at your best, even in the most challenging situations.
1.What is the big idea of the Yerkes-Dodson curve?
2.What are the benefits of practicing mindfulness?
3.From 1-10, what stress level do you often experience? Please explain what you can do to lower, keep or raise your level.

Dreamers Dream, Doers Do
Amy was a dear little girl, but she was always wasting time getting prepared to do her tasks, instead of doing them at once as she should do.
In the village, Mr Thornton kept a store where he sold all kinds of fruits, including berries (莓子) when in season. One morning he said to Amy, “Well, Amy, I noticed some fine, ripe (成熟的) blackberries on Mr Green’s farm today. He said that anybody was welcome to them. I will pay you 13 cents a kilogram for all that you pick for me.”
Amy was excited about the thought of making some money to help her mum, so she quickly ran home to get a basket to hold the berries. Then she thought she would like to know how much money she would get if she picked five kilograms. After finding out that she would get 65 cents, she started to dream big, “If I pick a dozen kilograms, how much would I make then?”
“Dear me,” she shouted, after calculating (计算) a while. “I should make a dollar and fifty-six cents!”
It took her some time to dream bigger, and then it was so near lunchtime that she had to stay at home until the afternoon.
As soon as lunch was over, she took her basket and hurried to the farm. Some boys had been there before lunch, and all the ripe blackberries were picked. She could not find half a kilogram to fill her basket. Then she thought of what her teacher often told her, “Do your task at once; then think about it. One doer is worth 100 dreamers.”

Sixteen is a special age in the United States. There is often a special celebration for a girl’s 16th birthday—a big party called Sweet-16. It is like a wedding reception with a number of guests and gifts.
About a month before the party, the girl’s family sends out invitations to the guests. The family members must buy special presents for the birthday girl and the guests should find good clothes to wear. A Sweet-16 present usually costs $40 to $60. This is about $20 more than the cost of a usual birthday present.
The party itself is not held at someone’s house. The hostess rents a reception hall for the event. Food, cakes and a DJ are provided. At around 6 o’clock, guests arrive and meet the birthday girl. Then the girl and her father have a special father-daughter dance. After that, guests dance for 30 to 45 minutes.
Then there is the most important part of the Sweet-16 party—the candle-lighting ceremony. The Sweet-16 hostess stands behind 16 unlit candles and gives each candle to her friends, family and anyone that she feels is important to her. A lot of crying and hugging go on at this time.
Afterwards, people sit and eat. Most guests begin leaving at around 11 o’clock.
This school year, I have been to two Sweet-16 parties. I am one of the youngest students in my grade (My birthday is in December). I’ll have to wait another year before I can have my own special Sweet-16 party. I can’t wait for it!

The winter holiday has come to an end, but families are already thinking about their next trip. Now, a new proposal (提议) might make that easier by giving students spring and autumn vacation.
Last month, a national policy suggested changing student vacation times to help boost the economy (促进经济). One idea is to give students short breaks in spring and autumn. The breaks would not reduce school hours but would give families more time for travel and fun.
Some cities have already introduced these breaks. Foshan announced that students will have a three-day autumn holiday in November and a two-day spring break. “Parents can match their leave with these breaks and travel with their kids,” said one expert.
Parents have mixed feelings. Some welcome more flexible travel options, while others worry about childcare. Schools are also thinking about how to manage class schedules.
Supporters say these breaks would do more than help tourism. They could reduce academic pressure (学业压力), improve students’ physical and mental health, and give children time to enjoy seasonal culture and nature.
1.Why did the national policy suggest changing student vacation times?
2.What do parents think of the spring and autumn vacation?
3.What do you think of the spring and autumn vacation? Why?

Ode to the Flower Gods was a highlight of the 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. It connects ancient beauty with modern stage art perfectly. It presents the traditional culture of the Twelve Flower Gods in a fresh and modern way.
The show follows the 12 lunar months, each month is represented by a flower and a famous historical figure (人物). Some of the figures are also famous writers in history. For example, the first month’s plum blossom matches Lin Bu’s quiet nobility. The sixth month’s lotus stands for Zhou Dunyi’s purity. The eighth month’s Osmanthus shows Li Qingzhao’s devotion to her true self. The ninth month’s chrysanthemum goes well with Tao Yuanming’s peaceful spirit.

Xpeng’s Female Robot Sparks Heated Debate
Xpeng Motors released a female humanoid (人形机器人) robot called IRON during its November 2025 technology day, and the robot quickly triggered a fiery discussion online. With its highly human-like appearance and smooth “catwalk gait”, the robot surprised many people.
IRON has 82 degrees of freedom, equipped with advanced AI chips and all-solid-state batteries. It can perform complex movements and delicate operations, such as walking gracefully and picking up small objects. However, its ultra-realistic gait made some netizens doubt if a real person was hiding inside. They pointed out that the robot’s leg movements were too natural to be mechanical.
To answer the doubts, He Xiaopeng, Xpeng’s chairman, responded publicly within 24 hours. He posted a video showing IRON’s internal mechanical structure, including bionic muscles and flexible joints. This move helped calm the controversy (争议). Many people then praised the technological breakthrough, while others discussed the “uncanny valley effect (恐怖谷效应)”—the discomfort people feel when robots are too similar to humans.
Xpeng plans to put IRON into mass production (量产) by the end of 2026. It will first be used in service scenarios like guidance and shopping assistance. The robot’s release shows Xpeng’s step into the robotics field, bringing new ideas to the industry.
This event not only displays technological progress but also makes people think about the future of human-robot interaction. As technology develops, such debates may become more common.
1.What did Xpeng Motors release during its 2025 technology day?
2.How did He Xiaopeng answer the netizens’ doubts about the robot?
3.What do you think of the robot IRON and why?

The Secret of Monarch Lake
While opening boxes in their new home, Kristy found an old photo. In the picture, a smiling girl stood beside a small lake.
“It says Mabel beside Monarch Lake, summer 1910,” Kristy read carefully.
Her mother explained that Mabel once lived in the house. Kristy felt curious and decided to keep the photo by herself. Later, their neighbor Mrs. Stevens told Kristy that Mabel loved Monarch Lake more than any other place, but no one knew where it was.
Kristy searched maps and the Internet, but she found nothing. She even went to the library with her mom, checked town maps, and typed “Monarch Lake” again and again. She asked the librarian for help, but no lake appeared anywhere.
One afternoon, she looked at the photo again and noticed a tower in the background. It looked exactly the same as the one behind their house.
“The photo was taken here,” Kristy realized.
That night, heavy rain fell. The next morning, Kristy looked outside and saw a pool of water in the garden, with monarch butterflies flying above it.
“Monarch Lake!” she cried.
At that moment, Kristy finally understood the secret. Monarch Lake was not a real lake. It was a small, living place, easy to miss but full of beauty.
1.What did Kristy find while opening boxes in her new home?
2.What did Kristy do to find Monarch Lake before she discovered the secret? Give two details.
3.What do you think Kristy learned from the discovery of Monarch Lake?

Su Shi was a famous Chinese writer, poet and painter. When he was young, he read a lot of books and wrote so many good articles that people thought he was pretty talented. Because of this, he wrote a couplet (对联) for himself:
Know all the words in the world
Read all the books on the earth
An old man saw this couplet and thought, “Su Shi is so proud. It is necessary for him to learn how to be modest.” So one day, he came to Su Shi’s house with a book. The book was shown to Su Shi and the old man said, “Though I have read the book many times, there are still some difficult words that I can’t understand. You are a person with rich knowledge so I come to you for help.”

Hearing Su Shi’s words, the old man smiled without saying anything. That day, they read the book together for several hours and both of them learned a lot from each other. After the old man left, Su Shi added some words to the couplet:
Work hard to know all the words in the world
Be determined to read all the books on the earth
From then on, Su Shi worked even harder. He spent more time reading books and he practised writing all the time. Day by day, he got better and became more successful.
