During the break times between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often rushed to the toilet then back to class with no time for anything else. But now that has changed. “I can have more time to rest and share interesting things with my classmates,” said Xiao.
In Beijing, students at primary and middle schools have longer breaks between classes. It has been changed from 10 minutes to 15 minutes so that students can spend more time outdoors for their physical and mental health.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, some schools have mixed break times with labour education by opening planting and animal feeding areas.
“We have welcomed new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” said Zhang Boren, a student from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. We get closer to nature, which is refreshing and relaxing.”
As the break time is longer, making sure everyone is safe is also important. Many PE teachers keep an eye on students playing on the ground.
“Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises to avoid running and slipping (滑倒),” said one PE teacher.
5. Xiao Jingsheng often ________ during the break times in the past.
A. hurried to the toilet B. had enough time to play
C. stayed in the classroom D. shared things with others

A. Students in Beijing have a 10-minute break now.
B. Students in Beijing do more outdoor activities now.

D. Students in Beijing spend more time in the classroom now.
7. Many PE teachers keep an eye on students playing on the ground to ________.
A. keep students safe B. help students do upper body exercises
C. make students enjoy the activities D. ask students to do more exercise
8. What’s the best title for the text?

Lei Diansheng is a famous Chinese explorer and environmental protector. Born in 1963 in a small village near Harbin, he is called “the modern Xu Xiake” for his great journey. Before his trip, he spent 10 years preparing—he did daily long runs to build up his body and read many books on living in the wild.
From 1998 to 2008, Lei spent 10 years walking across China. He walked about 81,000 kilometers almost twice around the equator (赤道) ! In 2008, he made history by walking alone through the Lop Nur Desert (罗布泊沙漠) —a dry, dangerous place. He walked 1,100 kilometers in 31 days and became the first person to do that alone.
Lei didn’t just walk for fun. He visited all 56 peoples in China, took 40,000 photos and wrote 3.2 million words in his notes. These notes became a “living record” of Chinese culture and nature. He also helped others during his trip—he gave money to poor students and helped people in floods in Hunan Province.
Now, Lei still works for nature and education. He leads teams to study the environment, like protecting the Yangtze River. Last year, he took a group of scientists to collect water samples (样本) there. He also works with traditional artists to turn his travel notes into art, so more people can learn about environmental protection.
Lei’s story tells us: true adventure is not just about walking far, but about loving our land and protecting it.
9. Why is Lei called “the modern Xu Xiake”?
A. Because he was born near Harbin.
B. Because he made a great walking journey.
C. Because he likes reading Xu Xiake’s books.
D. Because he traveled to every place Xu Xiake visited.
10. What did Lei do during his 10-year trip?
①He took many photos. ②He wrote long notes.
③He helped poor students. ④He built schools for kids.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
11. What does the underlined word “that” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. taking 40,000 photos B. collecting water samples of rivers
C. traveling all over China D. walking alone through the Lop Nur Desert
12. What can we infer (推断) from Lei’s work now?
A. He has given up his journey completely.
B. He expects more people to protect nature.
C. He focuses more on traveling than environmental work.
D. He has already finished the task of protecting the Yangtze River.
D
If you put two bottles of water—one hot and the other cold in a fridge, which will freeze quicker? The cold water, right? But in fact, the hot water most probably freezes first. Strange, isn’t it? Scientists call it the Mpemba effect.
Once Erasto Mpemba, a school boy, was making ice cream in a cooking class. He was surprised to find that a heated mix froze more quickly than a cold one. He wondered why this happened. When Osborne, a university scientist, came to the school, he asked him about it. Osborne took it seriously. He suggested that they work together to find out why. They tested many times by using water with temperatures from 25℃ to 90℃, and found that the higher the water temperature was, the less time it took the water to freeze. It means water at 25℃ takes the longest time to freeze and water at 90℃ takes the shortest.
What causes this effect? Some scientists think that the gas leaves water as water heats up, which makes it freeze quicker. Other scientists think differently. They say water in a bottle keeps moving, with hot water rising and cold water going down. This convection is stronger in the hotter bottle, which makes hot water lose heat faster than cold water.
Last winter, the Mpemba effect became popular online. Many people went to Harbin and threw hot water into the freezing air. The hot water would turn to ice at once, allowing people to enjoy the beautiful ice mist (薄雾) in the air. People took videos of this process and put them on the Internet.
13. What is the Mpemba effect?
A. A study plan. B. A test result. C. A scientific finding. D. A natural guess.
14. Which of the following can show Mpemba and Osborne’s discovery?
A. B.
C. D.
15. What does the underlined word “convection” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. The wind in the fridge. B. The force from the outside.
C. The movement of heat in water. D. The weight of the water bottle.
16. What’s the purpose of writing the last paragraph?
A. It leads to the main idea of the whole text.
B. It calls on teenagers to have a try in winter.
C. It offers a solution to Mpemba’s question at school.
D. It provides an example of the Mpemba effect in real life.

Not many little girls have grown up to be rocket engineers. Even fewer have got the chances to go into space. But Wang Haoze has managed to do both.
As a student, Wang worked hard in school. In 2008, she entered Southeast University. It’s one of China’s top universities. But Wang not only did well in learning, but also in running.
As a top student, Wang was able to explore new research fields. These programmes were exciting but difficult. Wang once complained about the challenges. In just a few months, she designed a great new product. It won high praise from a famous expert. Over time, Wang became a key member of her team.
In May 2018, China began training a new class of astronauts. Wang jumped at the chance and signed up. After passing three rounds of tests, Wang, along with 17 men, stood out from 2,500 other people. At the Astronaut Centre, Wang set out on another journey into the unknown.
On October 30, 2024, Wang flew into space aboard the Shenzhou-19 spaceship. She might run into many challenges at the Tiangong Space Station. But without doubt, she would put her best foot forward.
