Football, known as soccer in some countries, is widely regarded as the world’s most popular sport. Let’s explore its amazing journey through time!
Over 3,000 years ago, people in Mesoamerica played a ball game called Tchatali. They used a bouncing ball made of rubber (橡胶) —no other culture had back then! In China, around 200 BC, a kicking game called cuju became popular. Players used a leather (皮革) ball filled with feathers (羽毛). Aboriginal Australians also had their own ball game, Marn Gook, where they kicked a ball made of leaves or roots to keep it in the air.
Modern football began in England during the 1800s. Early forms were wild—the whole town played, causing harm and even hurting people! Later, schools like Rugby and Eton created their own rules. Rugby allowed using hands, while Eton used only feet. In 1863, the Football Association (FA) was formed in London. It was decided that carrying the ball with hands wasn’t allowed. And the game was divided into two types: association football and rugby.
Football clubs have existed since the 15th century, but were unorganized. Notts County, formed in 1862, is the oldest professional club. Factories and railways helped teams grow. By 1888, the Football League was set up. During the first season,12 clubs joined the league. The first international match ended in a 0:0 draw, watched by about 4,000 fans!
British workers spread football worldwide. In 1904, FIFA was founded to manage international games. The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. Today, over 200 countries play, and the Women’s World Cup began in 1991. Football’s biggest event, watched by billions, brings the world together!
From ancient traditions to cheering fields, football’s history is an amazing tale of teamwork, rules, and global love. Whether you kick a ball in a park or cheer for your team, you’re part of this wonderful story!

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation. I suggested that they should stay at “bed and breakfast” houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
“We didn’t stay at ‘bed and breakfast’ houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.” I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to houses where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to houses where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We also laughed about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
This amusing experience made us realize how language differences can sometimes lead to unexpected misunderstandings. Although my friends ran into a few challenges during their trip, these moments turned into unforgettable memories. Through this, they not only experienced British culture but also gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of learning languages. Perhaps next time they visit England, they’ll face signs and directions with more confidence and have a true “DIVERSION”!
43. What does the underlined word “accommodation” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. restaurants B. gift shops C. places to stay D. views to see
44. What made the writer’s friends stay at hotels at last?
A. The writer told them to do so. B. They misunderstood the signs outside the door.
C. They would be able to practice their English. D. People there were away on holiday.
45. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. A road sign that says “DIVERSION” in England means you will have fun there.
B. The writer’s friends were stuck in a big hole because of the road sign “DIVERSION”.
C. When British people are away on holiday, they put up a sign saying “NO VACANCIES”.
D. Spanish friends thought “VACANCIES” meant the house was not available to stay.
46. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph2 refer to?
A. His friends didn’t stay at “bed and breakfast” houses.
B. Most families were away on holiday.
C. His friends came back with funny stories.
D. He gave advice to his friends before the trip.
47. Which of the following is the best title for this article?
A. The Challenges of Travelling in England B. The Importance of Understanding Road Signs
C. How to Find Accommodation in England D. Funny Language Mistakes While Traveling

Fish babies in space? In a space study on zebrafish (斑马鱼), Chinese scientists have set a new record. They successfully managed to get four zebrafish to live and grow in a closed water world.
The zebrafish were sent to China’s space station aboard the ShenzhouⅩⅧ spaceship on April 25th, 2024. The astronauts brought a fish tank (鱼缸) filled with water to the space station. Four zebrafish and algae (藻类) lived inside it. In the special closed environment, the algae produced oxygen for the fish, keeping them alive. The fish’s waste gave the plants food. The scientists provided the fish food through a special needle. The tank can also feed the fish, control the temperature and lighting, and collect fish eggs by itself. The fish grew up and had babies in 43 days.
Such a closed-loop ecosystem (封闭生态系统) is important for future studies in space. It means that plants and animals can live in space more simply and easily. The study is very special because it is China’s first space research on water ecosystems. The scientists also found that the zebrafish acted differently from how they did on Earth. For example, they often swam on their backs. The low gravity (低重力) in space is a big reason. On Earth, gravity pulls everything to Earth’s center, and animals can find their way easily. Gravity also makes their bodies work harder and become stronger.
Humans and zebrafish share more than 70 percent of the same genes (基因). So the new finding will help scientists better understand human health.
48. What can the fish tank do by itself?
A. Produce oxygen for the fish. B. Change the water in the tank.
C. Feed the fish and collect fish eggs. D. Send the fish back to Earth.
49. What can we know from Paragraph 3?
A. The ecosystem in space works the same as on Earth.
B. Low gravity made the zebrafish swim differently from how they did on Earth.
C. The zebrafish grew faster in space than on Earth.
D. China has done many water studies in space before.
50. What is special about this study?
A. It’s the first space trip for zebrafish.
B. It is China’s first research on fish in space
C. It is China’s first research on algae growing in space.
D. It is China’s first research on water ecosystems in space.
51. What might be discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Why China’s space station developed quickly.
B. What the closed-loop ecosystems will be on Earth.
C. Why zebrafish were chosen in the space experiment.
D. How the study of zebrafish can be used for human health research.
52. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Zebrafish are good animals for space research.
B. Chinese scientists successfully kept zebrafish in space and got valuable findings.
C. The fish tank on the space station can do many things by itself.
D. Humans and zebrafish share most of the same genes.

First, it works your whole body. When you jump, you use your legs, arms, back, and even your chest muscles (肌肉). ____54____That’s why many athletes include it in their training.
____55____ It makes you focus on your breathing and movement. This helps you clear your mind and reduce stress. It can also help improve your memory and thinking skills by using both sides of your brain.
Third, it helps keep your heart and lungs (肺) healthy. Jumping raises your heart rate and makes blood move faster through your body. ____56____ Although you may feel breathless after a short time, it means your lungs are getting stronger.
Finally, it is good for your bones. When you jump, your bones bear more weight than usual. This stress helps them become stronger. ____57____ For older people, it can even help prevent bones from breaking easily.
In a word, jumping the rope is a simple activity with big health advantages. Why not give it a try?

C项“Here are four important reasons why you should add it to your daily life.”
A项“It works many different muscles at the same time.”
E项“Second, it is great for your brain.”
前文提到“Jumping raises your heart rate and makes blood move faster through your body.”,后文补充“Although you may feel breathless... lungs are getting stronger.”,中间需要衔接心率和血液流动对心脏的具体好处,与后文肺部的益处形成并列。D项“This helps your heart become stronger over time.”
F项“That’s especially important for young people whose bones are still growing.”

China started the “Green School” program to help protect the environment. Around my school, I often see wasted paper, leftover food, and lights left on in empty classrooms. These may seem small, but they harm our planet.
Creating a green school is necessary because it teaches us to care for the Earth. A clean and beautiful school also makes us feel better and learn more happily.
As students, we can do many things. For example, we should turn off lights and fans when not in use. We can also collect waste paper for recycling and plant trees around the school. Moreover, reminding classmates not to waste food is helpful.
