Hopefully, in the near future, humans can enjoy the clear and beautiful sky again. 34.What is the sky like in the countryside now? A.2,500 stars can be seen B.There are no stars at all. Rich Romans visited friends and family who were working in another part of the Roman Empire. But when the empire broke down, this kind of tourism stopped. In the early 17th century, the idea of the “Grand Tour” was born. Rich young English people sailed across the English Channel (英吉利海峡). They visited the most beautiful and important European cities of the time, including Paris in France, and Rome and Venice (威尼斯) in Italy. Their tours lasted for two to four years, and the tourists stayed a few weeks or months in each city. The “Grand Tour” was an important part of young people’s education—but only for the rich. In the 18th century, tourism began to change. For example, people in the UK started to visit some towns, such as Bath to “take the waters”. They believed that the water there was good for their health. So large and expensive hotels were built in these towns. In the 19th century, travel became much more popular and faster. When the first railways were built in the 1820s, it was easier for people to travel between towns, so they started to go for holidays by the sea. And some started to have holidays in the countryside as cities became larger, noisier and dirtier. Traveling by sea also became faster and safer when the first steamships were built. People began to travel more too far away countries. The 20th century saw cars become more and more popular among ordinary people. Planes were made larger, so ticket prices dropped and more people used them. Thus tourism grew. In 1949, Russian journalist Vladimir Raitz started a company called Horizon Holidays. The company organizes everything — plane tickets, hotel rooms, even food — and tourists pay for it all before they leave home. The package tour and modern tourist industry was born. The first travel agency in China was set up as early as 1949. But tourism did not take off until 1978. In 2002, the industry was worth 500 billion yuan and became an important part of China’s social development. 42.In the early times, the travelers ________. A.all came from Roman B.were very young and strong C.had lots of money D.traveled by boat 43.________ played the most important role in the tourism development. It is one of the first countries to develop new energy vehicles in order to cut down on emissions (排放) and build a greener car industry. New energy vehicles are vehicles enabled with an electric power system instead of oil. These vehicles are driven by using electricity and can bring emissions down to nearly zero. Hence, China is pushing for the adoption of more new energy vehicles to limit the dependence on fossil fuels, reduce emissions, and put low-cost, safer vehicles on the road. With various measures, the sales of e-cars in China have increased year by year. China’s new energy vehicle market has become the largest in the world since 2015, ahead of the United States, Europe and Japan. These new energy vehicles show the developmental possibilities of energy-efficient cars, which are new innovations that are both high in quantity and quality. Future automobiles will be electric, intelligent and connected to the Internet. 30.What powers the new energy vehicles? Normally, 2,500 stars can be seen by human eyes. But due to light pollution, you can only see 200 to 300 stars from today’s countryside, and no more than ten stars from a city. Light pollution influences more than that. When birds fly to another place over cities, they sometimes get lost by the brightness. Sea turtles (海龟) need dark beaches for laying eggs, but they can’t find their ideal places because of those bright lights. Too much light at night may even influences human health, too. In order to stop things from going worse, governments and organizations are working to reduce light pollution. Lights are used only when and where they are truly needed. They also shine lights down at the ground instead of up into the sky and use less bright lights. Hopefully, in the near future, humans can enjoy the clear and beautiful sky again. 34.What is the sky like in the countryside now? A.2,500 stars can be seen B.There are no stars at all. C.200 to 300 stars can be seen. D.Less than 10 stars can be seen. 35.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.Light pollution has no harm. B.We can see many stars with light. C.More lights make our life better. D.Humans have paid attention to light pollution. 36.What’s the writer’s hope for the future? A.People can pick the stars in the sky. B.People won’t use lights anymore. C.People will shine lights down. D.People can enjoy a clear sky again. 37.What is the best title for the passage? A.Light Pollution B.Colourful Lights C.Stop Using Light D.Bright Lights D We want to complete our work in a serious manner, so that we serve others better. Therefore, having a spirit of craftsmanship is necessary. The most important goal of this spirit is to cherish, value and be responsible towards our society and people. We should develop this spirit of craftsmanship so that we may forget our past, when products lacked quality and could only be used for a short period of time. Meanwhile, we should continue to improve our products’ quality so that we may use a pen or a watch for a lifetime. Besides improving the quality of our products, we should also further develop the inner qualities of our people. That is, because in the long run only a serious attitude towards our work will ensure a high level of product quality. So, we students also need to have this attitude of learning, by which we will do our part to promote the spirit of craftsmanship and thereby make our country and this world a better place. 38.Which is not mentioned of having a spirit of craftsmanship? A.Cherish. B.Value. C.Be responsible. D.Be smart. 39.Why should we also develop the inner qualities of our people? A.Because it will ensure a high level of product quality. B.Because our people have no education. C.Because our people are very lazy. D.Because our people have no craftsmanship. 40.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.The inner qualities of our people. B.The high level of our product quality. C.The spirit of craftsmanship. D.The students’ attitude of learning. 41.This passage is most likely from a ______. A.magazine B.speech C.report D.story E Tourism probably started in Roman times. A.Education B.Money C.Transportation D.People’s ideas 44.Modern tourism was born ________. A.in 1949 B.in Roman times C.in the early 17th century D.in the 19th century 45.The underlined phrase “take off” means ________. A.a plane rising into the air B.develop very fast C.remove hats and clothes D.bring down the prices W: David’s birthday is coming.
