I love him, so I try to forget about the sea. But I am unhappy and can’t forget. About a year later, I see a friend in town. His father has a ship and my friend says to me. We are sailing (航行) to London tomorrow. Why don’t you come with us?”
On September 1st, 1651, I go to Hull and the next day we sail for London, But a few days later, there is a strong wind. The sea is dangerous and the ship goes up and down, up and down. I am very ill and very afraid. “Oh, I don’t want to die,” I cry. “I want to live. If I live, I’ll go home and never go to sea again!” The next day, the wind dies down and the sea is quiet and beautiful again. “Well,” my friend laughs. “How do you feel now? The wind is not too bad. Just a little wind. Forget it.”
I forget about the danger and decide not to go home. I don’t want my friends and family to laugh at me. I stay in London for some time but I still want to go to sea. So, when the captain of a ship asks me to go with him to Guinea (几内亚) in Africa, I agree.
And so, I set sail for the second time. It is a good ship and I am confident (自信的) again.

Long long ago, there was a special woman in ancient China. She was good at telling stories. She was the king’s favourite wife. The king loved her stories and loved her very much. Sadly, one day, the woman became ill and died.
Everyone thought the king would soon find another favourite among his wives. But the king was so sad that he spent more time missing the woman and less time caring about his people. Everyone in the country was worried (担心的). They were afraid that another country might start a war because the king became weak, and many people might die. They must do something, and do it soon.
One day, a priest (祭司) saw some children playing with their dolls. The dolls made dancing shadows (影子) on the city wall. Because he knew all of the woman’s stories, he had an idea to help the king. He made a puppet (木偶) out of clay and it looked like the woman. When the puppet was finished, the priest went into the king’s garden, carrying his puppet, a candle (蜡烛), and a curtain (幕布). He placed the curtain near the king’s chair. He put his candle, his puppet, and himself behind the curtain. The king did not even notice the curtain at first, but the dancing shadow quickly drew his eyes. As the priest moved the puppet behind the curtain, he told a story she used to tell, one of the king’s favourites.
The king knew the priest was there. He knew the puppet was there. But it seemed as if the shadow was telling the story, as if his wife was spending time with him.

The first time I saw August Pullman, he was sitting alone at the back of Mr. Browne’s classroom, his face half-hidden behind a tower of textbooks. Most new kids would’ve been scanning the room for friends, but he was too busy taking notes. When Mr. Browne wrote “CHOOSE KIND” on the board, he circled the words twice like they were the answer to some secret question only he knew.
I didn’t sit with August that first day because I felt sorry for him. I sat with him because he was laughing at Mr. Browne’s lesson. Most kids were rolling their eyes, but August was actually writing things down—like he truly cared about “When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.”
Later in the cafeteria, Julian kept asking those questions: “What happened to your face? Were you in a fire?” August handled it like an expert. He just said, “No, I was born this way. It’s called mandibulofacial dysostosis, if you really want to know.” Julian looked stupid then, because August knew more big words than he did.
What’s strange is how people treat me now that I’m friends with August. Some kids called me “Nice Summer” quietly like it’s an insult (侮辱). Others suddenly want to be my friend, asking all these fake-nice questions about him. The worst are the teachers—they give me these cheering looks, like I’m some kind of hero for eating lunch with him.
August doesn’t need my protection. Yesterday, some seventh-grader tripped him in the hallway. Before I could react, August got up and said, “Thanks for the floor examination. It looks clean.” The kid just walked away confused.
Sometimes I wonder why more people don’t see what I see: a funny kid who chews his pencils to death, who can name every planet’s moons, who remembers that I hate cream. Not “the kid with the face”. Just August.
But then I hear the whispers in the locker room, see the way kids suddenly change seats when he sits down…and I remember why this is so hard.
Walking home that afternoon, I remembered that Mom always says middle school is just practice for real life, but what’s the lesson here? That most people are too scared to sit next to someone different?
1.Why did Summer firstly sit with August?
A.She pitied his unusual appearance. B.She noticed his reaction to Mr. Browne’s lesson.
C.The teachers asked her to help him. D.She wanted to impress other students.
2.Summer finds others’ “Nice Summer” comments ________.
A.wise and encouraging B.hurtful but understandable
C.funny but insulting D.strange and annoying
3.August’s reaction to being tripped shows that he ________.
A.was afraid of a fight B.wanted to report bullies to teachers
C.relied on Summer for protection D.used humor wisely to solve problems
4.This passage mainly explores________.
A.the challenges August faces with his school work B.Summer’s development of true friendship
C.teachers’ unfair treatment of special needs students D.Julian’s bullying behavior and its results

The worst are the teachers—they give me these cheering looks, like I’m some kind of hero for eating lunch with him.”可知,Summer觉得人们因为她和August成为朋友后的这些表现很奇怪,那些孩子叫她“Nice Summer”像是一种侮辱,所以她觉得这些评论既奇怪又令人讨厌。故选D。
3.推理判断题。根据“August got up and said, ‘Thanks for the floor examination. It looks clean.’”

One day, Shawn told his grandfather about a class science project that he was very excited about.
Each student was going to grow a pot of bean plants. When the plants grew big and strong, they could be transplanted into the school garden. All the students wanted to grow the strongest and best bean plant.
Shawn showed his grandfather the bean seeds. He explained that his teacher had taught them how to make the seeds grow. First, they put the seeds on a wet paper towel. Then, they put them in a warm place. When the seeds sprout (发芽), they are ready to be transplanted into a pot.

Homes are important places where people live, eat, sleep, and spend time with their families. Different countries have different kinds of houses because of their weather, culture, and the materials people can get.
In cold countries like Canada and Norway, houses are often made of wood or brick with thick walls and sloped (倾斜的) roofs to stop too much snow. Some traditional houses in Switzerland even have wide roofs to protect against heavy snowfall.
In hot and dry places like parts of Africa and the Middle East, people build homes from mud (泥), clay, or stone because these materials keep the inside cool.
In big cities like Tokyo and New York, many people live in tall flat buildings to save space. These flats often have modern features like elevators (电梯) and balconies. However, homes in places like England or France may have large gardens, barns (谷仓), or even small farms.
Some cultures have special traditional homes. For example, the Mongols (蒙古族人) in Central Asia live in round tents called yurts, made of felt and wooden frames. These can be taken down and moved when needed.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just an idea from sci-fi movies. It’s now part of our everyday lives, from smartphones to how we learn and work. AI is a powerful tool that helps solve problems, make decisions, and even create art. But with great power comes responsibility (责任). We need to understand both its good sides and challenges.
One exciting area where AI shines is education. It can adjust (调节) learning to fit individual students, letting them learn at their own speed and in ways that work best for them. For example, AI tutors give quick feedback (反馈), making learning faster and work better. Some schools use AI to design lesson plans or grade schoolwork, giving teachers helpful tips to improve their teaching. Still, we must be careful about unfairness (不合理) in AI systems and make sure they don’t harm certain groups of students.
AI is also changing how we work. It helps do repeating tasks, freeing us to focus on more creative work. Businesses use AI to study data and find trends, leading to smarter decisions. In healthcare, AI helps diagnose (诊断) illnesses, create treatments, and even help in operations. However. Al’s rise brings worries about job loss. As AI improves, some roles may disappear making it important for people to learn new skills and keep adapting.
In daily life, AI adds convenience and fun. Assistants like Siri or Alexa help manage schedules, play music, or control home devices. AI also provides entertainment, suggesting movies or music based on your tastes, or building lifelike game worlds. Yet. we must stay careful to hidden problems like privacy (隐私) issues or false information spreading. Using AI responsibly and in the right way matters.
The future of AI is bright but not without challenges. We must make sure that AI helps everyone by solving problems. Encouraging teamwork between researchers, developers, and lawmakers will help shape Al’s future wisely.
In short. AI is a game-changing tool that could change many parts of life. Moving forward, we should welcome AI while keeping in mind its limits and risks. By doing so, we can be sure that AI works as a positive tool, building a better future for all.

Dragons have long held the imagination of both Chinese and Western cultures, but they have very different looks and meanings that set them apart.
In Chinese culture, the dragon, named “Long”, holds a special place. It has a special appearance, looking like a huge, long snake combined with various animal parts. For example, it has the tail of a fish, which helps it swim gracefully in water. The scales (鳞) of a fish cover its body, giving it a shiny and protective surface. Its long neck is similar to that of a snake, allowing for flexible movement. Chinese dragons are often wingless, but they have the magical ability to rocket up and fly through the sky.
They stand for many positive qualities. In the past, they are the symbols (象征) of power. Emperors and kings were considered as sons of dragons, showing their noble (尊贵的) position. Also, Chinese farmers, who depended on good weather for their crops, used to offer sacrifices (祭祀品) like sheep to dragon gods. They hoped that the dragons would bring favorable weather, and thus good harvests. Moreover, dragons are believed to bring good fortune. You can often see dragon pictures on New Year decorations or at other traditional festivals like the Dragon Boat Festival.
In Western culture. dragons are very different. They are giant creatures that can breathe fire and destroy life. Their large bat-like wings carry them to the sky. Their bodies are covered in lizard-like scales, and their tails often have a sharp tip. Western dragons are usually related to evil. In medieval times (中世纪), they were seen as symbols of the devil, and the devil was even called “the great dragon”. Knights (骑士) would be celebrated as the bravest heroes when they killed dragons.
In a word, the dragons of Chinese and Western cultures reveal the large differences between these two worlds. While Chinese dragons are seen as symbols of strength, wisdom, and good fortune, the Western dragons are often described as wicked, fire-breathing beasts. Whether as a protector of the world or a fearsome enemy, the dragon remains a timeless and fascinating fictional creature, inviting us to explore the depths of our own culture and imagination.

A.They have lizard-like scales. B.They have a long, flexible neck.

Have you ever tried Chinese chess, which is also called Xianggi in China? It is a famous two-player game with a long history of more than 2,000 years. The game is not only fun but also shows Chinese ways of thinking, each player has l6 pieces in either red or black, just like two armies fighting each other.
The chessboard (棋盘) of Chinese chess is special. It has nine lines across and ten lines up and down, with a river in the middle. The river stops some pieces, like the elephant, which cannot cross it. To play Chinese chess well, you don’t have to communicate (交流) too much with each other. Instead, you need to think carefully before each move because every piece has its own way of moving.
The horse moves in an “L” shape, but if any other piece is in its way, it can’t move forward. The chariot (车) moves straight, and the cannon (炮) can jump over one piece to take another. The soldiers (兵) can only move one step each time and can walk to the left or the right after crossing the river. The guards (士) protect the King inside the palace. To win the game, you have to carefully plan your moves, protect your pieces and try to catch the other’s pieces. If the King is caught, the game is over. The key is to catch the other player’s King, the most important piece.

People choose where to live for many reasons—the house, the location, or good schools—but almost never because of who their neighbors might be. Since we can’t choose our neighbors, fences help create comfortable boundaries (边界) between homes.
According to sociologist (社会学家) Douglas B.Currivan, most people want to know their neighbors just a little bit, but not too much. Fences mark where one property ends and another begins. They let people enjoy their private space while still being able to wave hello from a comfortable distance. Fences also prevent common neighbor problems like noisy pets or children wandering into others’ yards.
Research shows that clear boundaries actually help neighbors get along better. “When property lines are unclear, arguments between neighbors are more likely, ” explains Professor Daniel Stokols. Surprisingly, fences can even improve neighborhood safety. Studies show that burglars (入室窃贼) are less likely to target homes with fences, even small decorative ones, because they signal (示意) that the owners care about their property.
However, the type of fence matters a great deal. A very tall, solid fence might seem unfriendly, while a shorter fence or a row of bushes feels more welcoming. Some people use plants or small walls to mark property lines in a nicer way. There are even “spite fences”—unusually tall or ugly fences built just to annoy neighbors, which sometimes lead to legal problems.
While fences separate properties, they can also bring neighbors together by creating a sense of security and order. One New York resident, Karen Pace, discovered this when she removed an old fence and suddenly felt uncomfortable without her private outdoor space.
Good neighbors are careful about each other’s space when putting up fences, and good fences help neighbors maintain just the right amount of friendly distance.
1.What is the main purpose (目的) of fences in marking properties?
A.To decorate the yard beautifully.
B.To attract wildlife to the neighborhood.

D.To show where one person’s land stops and another’s starts.
2.According to the article, why do burglars avoid homes with fences?
A.Because fences are too expensive to climb over.
B.Because fences signal that owners care about their property.
C.Because fences make too much noise when they are touched.
D.Because fences are always dangerous.
3.What did Karen Pace discover when she removed her old fence?
A.Her neighbors became much friendlier.
B.She felt uncomfortable without her private outdoor space.
C.Her property value increased immediately.
D.Burglars started targeting her home.
4.What can we infer about “spite fences” from the text?
A.They are built to protect pets. B.They are designed to be beautiful.
C.They are meant to annoy neighbors. D.They help neighbors become closer.
5.Which of the following would be the BEST title for this article?
A.The History of Fences B.Why We Should Remove All Fences
C.Good Fences Make Good Neighbors D.The Most Expensive Fences in the World

The king was no longer sad. At the end of each busy day, the king went into his garden, hurried to visit his shadow wife and heard her stories once again.
That is how shadow puppets first began.

“Hometown” is a word full of warmth and beauty. How would you show your love for your hometown? At the final of a national English-speaking competition, contestants from all, over China shared their own stories.
Wang Siqi from Nanjing International School, Jiangsu, talked about her hometown Nanjing. “I used to live in the US, and my parents kept telling me everything about Nanjing. Mr Worth liked spending time with his grandson, Shawn. He enjoyed teaching him some of the things he may not be taught in school.
After listening to his grandson, Mr Worth said, “I want to show you one more thing about growing plants.”
“When I was a boy, my father showed me how to grow strong plants,” he continued. “When the plant is starting out, you put some weight on it.” Shawn looked at his grandfather in surprise.
“Doesn’t the weight prevent the bean from growing?” he asked.
“No, of course not. This way, the bean plant will be strong and healthy. If you give it everything it wants, it will grow too fast and be weak. It will fall over when a big wind blows.” Shawn listened carefully. He wanted to grow the bean in the way his grandfather suggested.

Today, Chinese chess is famous not only in China but also in many other countries. Many people enjoy playing it because it helps them think better and solve (解决) problems. You can find people playing Chinese chess in parks or online. It is a game that is both fun and meaningful for all ages.

D.Because fences are always dangerous.
3.What did Karen Pace discover when she removed her old fence?
A.Her neighbors became much friendlier.
B.She felt uncomfortable without her private outdoor space.
C.Her property value increased immediately.
D.Burglars started targeting her home.
