People always say the music from their younger years is the best compared to other times. This may be because of something that can be called the “memory bump” (记忆隆起).
According to the BBC, the memory bump means that our memories from ages 10 to 30 are very strong. This time heavily shapes our interests, such as our favorite books, films, sports stars, and especially music. This is because there is a “safe” place in our brain to store the musical memories. The place is well protected against aging problems. As a result, the music we listen to during these years usually has a lasting influence. We usually remember the music in our early years more fondly than music from other times in our lives.
More importantly, “music is episode (片段式的),” Professor Robert Cutietta at the University of Southern California told CNN. “If you look at an artwork or something, you may forget it later, but music is over time.”
Music from our younger years mixes happy and sad feelings when we listen to it. When the songs can be related to your experience, memories of those experiences will come back as you listen to the songs again.
Sometimes, with a change in experience, the sadness you felt before when listening to a song can later turn into joy. This can explain why listening to something from a difficult time in your younger life can bring a feeling of relief now.
29. What is “the memory bump”?
A. A type of music from the 1910s. B. The happiest memories in the brain.
C. An area in the brain for musical memories. D. Strong memories from our early years.

B. We can forget music from childhood very quickly.
C. Listening to music is like looking at an artwork.
D. Listening to music can make us think of our old times.
32. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Getting older changes how we remember music.
B. Our music memories have a lasting influence.
C. We can remember music better than other things.
D. Most people have beautiful musical memories.
C
Many people believe Andrea Bocelli has the most beautiful voice in the world. He is an Italian opera singer, musician, and music producer. He has performed for many people worldwide. But how did his musical journey begin?
Bocelli was born in 1958 with an eye disease. But he became interested in musical instruments at an early age. When he was six years old, he began learning to play the piano. He began to teach himself to read music in Braille (盲文) and learned to play the flute, saxophone, trumpet and more! He also began developing his singing. At age 14, he won a small singing competition near his hometown. Later, he studied law at university and sang in piano bars at night to pay for his studies. After graduating, he was a lawyer for just one year until he decided to follow his dream of music.
Bocelli got his big break in 1992 when he recorded a song for the famous singer, Luciano Pavarotti. Pavarotti was amazed by Bocelli’s voice, and they soon became friends. They recorded the song “Miserere” together, and it became a hit all over Europe!
The Music of Silence is a movie that tells Andrea Bocelli’s life story. The director wanted to show the connection between hearing and loss of eyesight. When one sense is weak, sometimes the other senses are stronger. Bocelli’s blindness is one of the reasons why he can hear more of the tiny differences in his singing voice.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22,1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied medicine and became a doctor in a small English town called Portsmouth. He started writing stories. His first published story was A Study in Scarlet in 1887. It was a detective story, and its main character was the detective Sherlock Holmes.
The first Holmes stories sold quite well. Conan Doyle got hundreds of letters for Holmes because many readers thought he was a real person. Even today, fans from all over the world send letters to “221B Baker Street”—Holmes’ fictional address.
Conan Doyle wanted to be known as a serious writer. He also wrote history books and plays. He felt that Holmes was taking too much of his time. So in 1893, in a story called The Final Problem, he “killed” Holmes. In the story, Holmes and his greatest enemy, Professor Moriarty, fell down into a deep river.
Readers were very upset. Conan Doyle received many angry letters. Because of this, he later brought Holmes back. First, he wrote The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901, but that story happened before Holmes’ “death”. Finally, in 1903, in The Empty House, he explained that Holmes did not really die but had been hiding from his enemies. Why is Holmes so popular?

30. What does the underlined word “fondly” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. 容易忘记地 B. 天真无邪地 C. 满怀深情地 D. 无忧无虑地
31. What might Professor Robert Cutietta agree about music?
A. Music from our younger years is the best.

【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“If you look at an artwork or something, you may forget it later, but music is over time.”以及第四段提到音乐会唤起与个人经历相关的记忆,可以推断出罗伯特·库蒂埃塔教授同意音乐能让我们回想起旧日时光的观点。故选D。
【32题详解】

When Arthur Conan Doyle wrote a story about a detective named Sherlock Holmes, he didn’t know he was creating one of the most popular characters in books.
A new kind of hero: He was one of the first great detectives in fiction.
Fair play: Conan Doyle believed in giving readers all the clues to solve the mystery.
Science: Holmes was one of the first detectives in stories to use scientific methods like studying fingerprints.
Great mind: People love how he can notice small details and find the truth.
37. Why did readers write to “221B Baker Street”?
A. Many readers believed Holmes was a real person.
B. Conan Doyle actually lived there.
C. Holmes answered every letter he received.
D. The post office made a mistake.
38. What did Conan Doyle think of different book types?
A. He considered being a doctor was more important than writing.
B. He believed detective stories were the most difficult to write.
C. He thought history books were more “serious” than detective stories.
D. He enjoyed writing plays more than reading letters from fans.
39. Why did Conan Doyle bring Sherlock Holmes back in 1903?
A. He needed more money from writing.
B. He found a new enemy for Holmes to fight
C. He missed writing exciting detective stories.
D. Readers’ angry actions made him change his mind.
40. What is the main purpose of the section “Why is Holmes so popular?”

If you walk into Yudong, a famous painting village in Zhejiang, you will be surprised by the colourful paintings in homes, buildings and local cultural centres. All of the paintings describe people’s daily life in the countryside. They also show the great improvement in recent years.
In the 1970s, some villagers picked up paintbrushes and took lessons from local teachers. They created their own style and developed art in the village. The local art museums are so popular that thousands of tourists visit them every month.
Painting has brought wealth to many villagers. Yu Tongde is one of them. He once found the beauty of the countryside while working in the field. But he didn’t just keep the beauty in his mind.
