I came out of my room this morning and found Mom and Dad standing in front of the TV. On the screen, Tony Verrazo, the weatherman said, “Calvin has turned west and is headed for land.”
I didn’t understand what was happening, but suddenly Mom and Dad started rushing around.
“You pick up coconuts, Jason.” Dad said.
“Coconuts?” I was confused. We had coconut trees in the yard, but why pick up coconuts now?
I wanted to ask, but Dad had no time for me.
I had no idea what was going on but I wanted to see Calvin, and I went to the beach. It was empty except for two men. One had a camera and the other was talking into a microphone. I recognized him—Tony Verrazo!
“Hi, kid. What’s up?” said Tony, smiling
“Oh, I’m taking a break from picking up coconuts,” I lied.
“Coconuts,” he said thoughtfully. “I forgot all about them. Stand over here and tell the camera who you are and what you’re doing.”
“Hi,” I took the microphone. “I’m Jason and I’m picking up coconuts because Calvin is coming.”
“Thanks, kid.” Tony said, “You’d better head home and finish your job!”
I had to do the silly job because Tony made me tell everyone what I was doing.
After hours of working in the yard, I filled up all the bags I could find. When I got inside, history was repeating itself. Mom and Dad were standing in front of the TV, and Tony was talking.
“Hurricane-force (飓风级的) winds can make flying coconuts really dangerous! Don’t forget to pick them up! And we want to give credit to (表扬) the person who came up with the idea,” he said.
There on TV, I was holding the microphone, saying, “Hi, I’m Jason, and I’m picking up coconuts.”

As I looked out of the school bus window, I saw the Galaxy Drive-In (银河汽车影院). One sign said “CLOSED,” and the girl next to me whispered, “It’s haunted (闹鬼的). Sometimes movies play there by themselves!” Later, I told my mom about it, but she doubted it. That night, however, I saw lights shining on the screen. Was it really haunted?
The next morning, Mom and I went to check it. The place looked like an empty car park. While we were looking at an old movie poster, an old man appeared. “This is a private place,” he said. Mom apologized, explaining we had just moved nearby and that she used to visit it as a kid. The man’s expression softened. I blurted out, “They say ghosts play movies here!” Mom gave me a look, but the man smiled. “I’m the one playing those movies,” he said, introducing himself as Nick. “My dad opened this place in 1957.”
Nick explained that he couldn’t afford a digital projector (数字投影机), so he had to close it. Before leaving, he invited us to watch a movie that night. We returned, and as I sat with Mom in our car, I imagined how lively the drive-in must have been years ago. After the movie, Mom asked Nick if he’d reopen with a new projector. “Sure,” he said. That night, I kept thinking about the excitement of seeing that big screen light up. Nick had looked so happy talking about the old days.
That’s when my big idea came to me.
The next day, Mom and I talked to Nick. With his OK, I wrote a letter to our newspaper.
Help save the Galaxy! To reopen, the Galaxy Drive-In needs your help to upgrade its projection system. With your help, this historical theatre can once again become a good place for families in our town.
I ended by asking people for contributions. If even half the families in the town donated a dollar each, Nick would have enough.
We were hopeful, but after two weeks, only a few hundred dollars was raised.
I felt glum, but soon things brightened.
Nick called our house. “An organization that protects old theatres saw your letter and started an online fundraiser,” Nick said excitedly. “See what you started, Jared? I can’t thank you enough.”
That was a year ago. Today, the Galaxy is back in business. I’ve never seen Nick happier. On a good night, he gets 300 cars.
31.Why does the writer include the detail about Nick’s father opening the drive-in in 1957?
A.To show the drive-in’s historical value. B.To explain why it needed a digital projector.
C.To show Nick’s deep love for his father. D.To explain why no one came to watch movies.

A new study in Nature shows sea otters (海獭) returning to their home ground in Central California has helped slow down erosion (侵蚀) of the area’s stream banks and marsh (沼泽) edges by up to 90%.
Findings show that areas with large otter populations have less erosion, mainly because the sea otters like eating crabs so much. “It would cost tens of millions of dollars for humans to rebuild these stream banks and restore these marshes. The otters are stabilizing (稳定) them for free, in exchange for a big all-you-can-eat crab meal,” said biology professor Brian Silliman, at Duke University. “Remodeling a coastline is usually something only strong physical forces, like powerful storms or huge tidal flow change, can do,” he continued, “so it begs a question: Could similar results be achieved in other environments around the world?”
Like many California river mouths, Elkhorn once was home ground for otters, which need to eat around 20 to 25 pounds of food every day, with crabs being one of their favourite meals. But after fur traders hunted the local otter population nearly to extinction (灭绝), the number of crabs increased rapidly over the next century.
“Crabs eat salt marsh roots, dig into salt marsh soil, and over time can cause a salt marsh to wear away and disappear. This had been happening at Elkhorn for years until sea otters returned in the mid-1980s,” said the lead author of the study, Brent Hughes. “Today, years after the otters returned, marshes and stream banks became more stable.”
① To discover what role sea otters were playing in all this, the researchers carried on surveys across 13 tidal streams and small field experiments at five locations around the river mouth. ②They lasted over a six-year period. ③The information, collected on the ground, confirmed that the places with large populations of otters, erosion had slowed by the study’s end. ④ “The return of the sea otters didn’t completely fix the losses, but it did slow them down so that these places could become stable again, even with all the other problems,” Huges said.
Angelini, another member of the research team, saw hope in this new method. “All these challenges, like sea level rise and storms, seem difficult to deal with,” she said. “But this study shows us that if we really understand the ecosystem and know what tools to use, we can help make these systems healthier and more stable. And after all these years, we now see these amazing results. It’s a great story.”
34.What does Brent Hughes think of bringing back sea otters to the landscape like Elkhorn?
A.Resultful. B.Expensive. C.Creative. D.Harmful.
35.The following sentence would best be placed at ________.
Sea otters were not included in some test places but allowed to be used in others.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
36.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Long-term research can help us protect nature.
B.A lot of unlawful hunting once happened in California.
C.Large populations of crabs are the main cause of the erosion.
D.Nature protection depends on the reintroduction of the sea otters.
37.The passage mainly wants to __________.
A.explain the purpose of the study B.describe the difficulty of the study
C.discuss the limitation of the study D.introduce the discovery of the study

34.推理判断题。根据“‘Today, years after the otters returned, marshes and stream banks became more stable.’ ”可知,Brent Hughes认为海獭回归多年后,沼泽和河岸变得更加稳定。因此这种做法应是有效果的。故选A。
35.推理判断题。根据“Sea otters were not included in some test places but allowed to be used in others.”可知,海獭不包括在一些测试地点,但允许在其他地方使用。与“③The information, collected on the ground, confirmed that the places with large populations of otters, erosion had slowed by the study’s end.”(从地面收集到的信息证实,在研究结束时,那些有大量水獭的地方,侵蚀速度有所减缓合)相符合。故选C。
36.推理判断题。根据“Findings show that areas with large otter populations have less erosion, mainly because the sea otters like eating crabs so much.”与“‘Crabs eat salt marsh roots, dig into salt marsh soil, and over time can cause a salt marsh to wear away and disappear. This had been happening at Elkhorn for years until sea otters returned in the mid-1980s,’ said the lead author of the study, Brent Hughes.”可知,有大量水獭的地区侵蚀较少,主要是因为海獭非常喜欢吃螃蟹。因此大量的螃蟹是造成侵蚀的主要原因。故选C。
37.主旨大意题。根据“A new study in Nature shows sea otters (海獭) returning to their home ground in Central California has helped slow down erosion (侵蚀) of the area’s stream banks and marsh (沼泽) edges by up to 90%.”与“‘But this study shows us that if we really understand the ecosystem and know what tools to use, we can help make these systems healthier and more stable. And after all these years, we now see these amazing results. It’s a great story.’”以及通读全文可知,本文主要介绍了研究的发现。故选D。

32.What does “my big idea” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Buying a new projector. B.Organizing a movie night.
C.Talking to Nick with Mom. D.Writing to ask for donations.
33.What is the best title for the story?
A.Saving the Galaxy B.Opening a Drive-In
