From an early age, I began to like Chinese culture a lot. When there was a chance to study in Beijing as an exchange student, I took it at once. In my first 24 hours in Beijing, I felt very nervous. I didn’t see one foreigner. But on my first day of school, I was greeted by many foreign faces. The students came from all over the world. I would be in a class with Chelsea from Norway and Charlie from my motherland — the UK.
None of us had studied Chinese before, but our language skills improved quickly. By the end of the first month, we could all make simple sentences. Some of these sentences, though, were quite funny. We often sent our language teacher Sophie into wild laughter. We had a happy time together.
The first month was very tiring. There were so many new things to learn. Thankfully, our school organized many events for students. We talked a lot about cultural differences and our future plans. It was a great chance for us to practice speaking Chinese.
In October, my Chinese friend Zhen Hua showed me around the city. He took me to some of his favorite restaurants. Chinese table manners were very different from those in the West. Eating Chinese food was like an adventure, and it became my favorite part about living in Beijing.
My six-month stay in China made me excited. I want to visit China again to look for more adventures.

Scientists from China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University are developing a robot “guide dog” to help blind people. The robot dog is about the size of an English bulldog but a little wider. It has six legs instead of four. The extra legs make it more stable and help it move faster.
The robot is being tested in Shanghai. With the help of cameras and AI, the robot dog can see, listen and speak with blind people. It can help them during daily trips outside and be a “friend” at home. Blind people can also use a cane (手杖) to control the robot’s walking and running speed. The robot can even recognize the traffic lights—real guide dogs are unable to do that.
Li Fei and Zhu Sibin are helping test the robot. Li is totally blind and Zhu can only see a little. Zhu often uses a cane to move around. “The robot dog will make it easier to get into public places than with real guide dogs. I am happy to join in the test. It could change our lives in the near future,” Li said.
In China, there are about 17.31 million blind people, but there are only about 400 guide dogs. The new robot is trying to solve this problem. “We believe our robot will act as ‘a pair of eyes’ for blind people,” said Professor Gao Peng, one of the scientists. He thinks there could be a large market for these robot dogs.
( )14. Why do scientists develop the robot dog?
A. To help blind people. B. To improve AI technology.
C. To beat the British bulldog. D. To create a six-legged machine.
( )15. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

C. He brings it into public places. D. He controls it with a cane.

A. It can treat blindness. B. It costs a lot of money.
C. It has taken the place of real guide dogs.
D. It will have a large number of customers.

A new study warns that millions of Europeans could die from heat-related causes by the end of the century. The study was based on predicted climate activities in 854 different European cities. It found that hot weather could kill as many as 2.3 million people in Europe by 2100.
Presently, cold weather kills far more people in Europe than hot weather. But the study found that as temperatures continue to rise, deaths from cold weather will reduce over time. However, heat-related deaths are predicted to rise greatly.
The researchers said the number of predicted deaths could be reduced if nations are able to find better ways of cutting down carbon (碳) pollution levels. They called for increased efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and develop air-cooling systems in parts of Europe. Without such efforts, places in Italy, southern Spain and Greece are likely to see large increases in heat deaths related to climate change.
On the other hand, much of Scandinavia and Britain are predicted to see fewer cold-related deaths, largely because low temperatures are expected to be moderate.
Pierre Masselot helped lead the research of the environmental effects on human health. “The Mediterranean (地中海) is a so-called climate hotspot,” he said. “It’s an area that is warming much quicker than the rest of the world. And Malta is right in the middle of it.” The study predicts Malta’s temperature-related deaths will increase by 269 in every 100,000 people by the end of the century.
European officials reported several heat waves have killed thousands of people in recent years. The highest number was in 2003 when about 70,000 deaths were recorded. Among the areas predicted to see the most deaths from future temperature rises is Barcelona, Spain. The study found almost 250,000 people could die from temperature-related causes in that city by 2100.
( )18. What can we infer (推断) from the article?
A. Temperatures in Europe are keeping on going up now.
B. The whole of Europe will face the danger of hot weather.
C. The study has researched enough actual climate activities.
D. About 854 European cities are suffering from hot weather.
( )19. Which paragraph talks about how to reduce the heat-related deaths?
A. Paragraph 3. B. Paragraph 4.
C. Paragraph 5. D. Paragraph 6.
( )20. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “moderate”?
A. Freezing. B. Heated.
C. Changeable. D. Comfortable.
( )21. What can be the best title (标题) for the article?
A. Dangers will come at the end of the century
B. Barcelona will be hit by heat-related deaths
C. Millions of Europeans face deadly heat risks
D. Actions are needed to reduce carbon pollution

57. 例文:
Let’s get moving
Recently, all primary and middle schools in Yantai have been required to carry out the “Double Long Breaks” activity. This new rule introduces two 30-minute exercise breaks every school day, one after the second class in the morning and another in the afternoon. It aims to improve our health through more physical activity.
I really enjoy these breaks. I usually play basketball with my classmates or do some running. After moving around, I feel more energized and my mind feels fresh for the next class. It’s a great way to relax and have fun.
So, let’s all join in! Make the most of these breaks to get moving. Exercise is good for our bodies and minds. Let’s build a healthy habit together!
