When a theatre puts on a show, someone has to make the stage look like a castle, or a forest, or a school. That person is the set designer. But before building the real set, they create a small model.
Lizzie Bracken designed the set for a play called “You Think It’s Easy Being The Tooth Fairy (牙仙子)” at Lifeline Theater in Chicago.
Ophelia: __▲__
Lizzie: I think almost every set designer in the world starts with a model. It’s a fast way to see what the set will look like. You can take apart (拆解) a model and put it back together and play with it and make sure everything works before you build the real one. I start with a lot of drawings. Once I can see what it looks like, I make a white model, no color, so we can see if all the pieces work. Then I add colors and decoration.
Ophelia: What’s the model made of?
Lizzie: Mainly foamcore (泡沫板). If I’m working on a set with lots of furniture, I’ll just buy models online from a dollhouse or model train company. I love model train stores. You can find some really great things there: trees, furniture and cool lighting. Then I slightly change them the way I want.
Ophelia: The play is about a three-inch-tall tooth fairy. How did you make a grown-up actor look that tiny?
Lizzie: Oh, we have lots of tricks! For example, the prop (道具) designer, Jenny Pinson, made some huge coins for the tooth fairy to collect. That made her look small. We also made a giant kid’s hand, about four feet long and a giant cat. Then the rest is left to audience’s (观众的) imaginations.
Ophelia: What would you like to do next?
Lizzie: Maybe Frankenstein…that would be so fun to work on.
Ophelia: Thanks for talking with me!
16. What does Lizzie do?
A. A set designer. B. A prop designer. C. An actor. D. A model.
17. How did Lizzie make the actor look so small?
A. By playing tricks on the audience. B. By making stage props larger.
C. By finding some shorter actors. D. By asking the audience to imagine.
18. Which of the following is the most suitable for __▲__?
A. Why do you make models? B. Why do you become a set designer?
C. How do you learn to make models? D. How do you take apart your models?
19. What is the right order of Lizzie’s making a model?
①make a white model ②color and decorate it ③draw a picture ④check all the pieces
A. ①②③④ B. ③①④② C. ①③②④ D. ③①②④
20. What can we learn from Lizzie’s words?
A. She shows little interest in her work.
B. She feels hopeful about her future.
C. She wants to give up her job in the future.
D. She feels tired about her present job.

【18题详解】
后文Lizzie的回答围绕模型展开,先说明“I think almost every set designer in the world starts with a model. It’s a fast way to see what the set will look like. You can take apart (拆解) a model and put it back together and play with it and make sure everything works before you build the real one.”,解释了制作模型的原因,随后介绍了模型的制作流程,因此最适合填入▲处的问题是“Why do you make models?”。
【19题详解】
第四段指出“I start with a lot of drawings. Once I can see what it looks like, I make a white model, no color, so we can see if all the pieces work. Then I add colors and decoration.”,按照制作顺序:先draw a picture,再make a white model,接着check all the pieces,最后color and decorate it,对应顺序③①④②。

The mystery (神秘的事) began as the twins looked around their new home—an old house with apple trees.
What interested the twins most was the attic (阁楼). There they found a dirty old bottle. After cleaning it, a surprising note inside caught their attention.
*By stones where shadows lie, close to where old leaves die.*
*Not far below, under the earth, lies a treasure of secret worth.*
*If you search and do not fear, the past will soon be clear.*
*Near the bed where dragonflies fly, dig by the wettest place nearby.*
“A treasure!” Anna said excitedly.
“And these clues (线索)! Where old leaves die,” Sam read aloud. “It’s near those apple trees.”
“Let’s get a shovel (铲子) and borrow a metal detector (金属探测器) to find the treasure.”
With their parents’ help, Sam used the detector under the apple trees and found an old bottle cap.
They also checked the stone wall but there was only a nail. All their early leads turned out to be wrong.
That night, Anna kept thinking about “bed” in the note. She looked it up in the dictionary and suddenly, an idea clicked.
The next morning, she led everyone into the woods where a stone wall ran by a stream.
“Where’s the bed?” Sam asked.
“Bed also means the bottom of a stream and that's where dragonflies lay their eggs.” Anna explained, sweeping the detector.
Beeeeee. They dug carefully and found a lunch box.
“Look at all these things.” They pulled out the treasures: a postcard, a music record, a silver half-dollar, and a baseball card.
“It's a box from the past!” Sam shouted. “Look,1964 on the baseball card!”
“But who buried (埋) it?” Anna wondered, holding up the postcard. On the back was another note:
*The past is a mystery, the present a race, to find who I am, just find the place.*
*Look where stories and words stay, or behind the doors where secrets hide away.*
Anna laughed. “Here we go again-another mystery to solve!”
21. Why did someone leave the first note?
A. To ask someone to help solve the mystery.
B. To introduce the history of the old house.
C. To lead people to find something valuable.
D. To describe where dragonflies like to live.
22. How did Anna probably feel when “an idea clicked”?
A. Hopeful and certain. B. Surprised but a little scared.
C. Curious and interested. D. Excited but a little worried.
23. What does the “bed” in the note refer to (指)?
A. The place where the twins sleep. B. The bottom of the stream.
C. The apple tree roots. D. The attic floor.
24. What can we infer (推断) from the story?
A. The twins knew there was a note in the attic.
B. It was very easy for the twins to find the hidden treasure.
C. It was certain that the twins knew who buried the box.
D. There was no doubt that the twins would continue with the mystery.
25. What is the best title for this story?
A. New Home B. Hidden Treasure C. Lovely Twins D. Mystery Bottle
【答案】21. C 22. A 23. B 24. D 25. B

【23题详解】
由“Bed also means the bottom of a stream and that‘s where dragonflies lay their eggs”可知,诗中的“bed”指的是溪流的底部。
【24题详解】

【详解】句意:这位领导和他的团队成员此刻正在努力研究这个研究项目。work“工作”是动词。由时间状语“at the moment”可知,句子时态为现在进行时,其谓语结构为“is/am/are+doing”。主语是The leader together with his group members, together with连接主语遵循“就远原则”,所以be动词用is,work的现在分词是在词尾加ing。
六、阅读表达(本大题共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题,每个题目的答案不超过10个单词。
Do you laugh every day? Most people do. Scientists say that people laugh about 17 times a day on average. That is lots of laughter (笑).
In India, there are hundreds of laughter clubs. They aren’t a place for people to watch interesting shows. They’re a place for people to practice laughing. People get together every morning. First, they put their hands on their heads. Then they pretend (假装) to laugh. But after a short time, everyone is laughing naturally. They say they feel good after laughing together.
Scientists believe that laughter is good for us. Why do they think so? For one thing, laughter is good exercise. When we laugh, we exercise many muscles (肌肉) in our body. Scientists say that one hundred laughs is the same as ten minutes of running. For another, when we laugh, we also breathe deeply. This helps us relax. That’s good for us, too.
Why do we laugh? That’s a hard question to answer. We know that people laugh more often in a group. They don’t laugh very often when there is no one with them. Many scientists believe that we use laughter to connect with other people. Laughter helps us feel part of a group.
Some people even say that laughter is the best medicine. If a man is ill, laughter can help him get well. What do you think?

Reading and travelling: paths to growth
Just as the saying goes, “Read ten thousand books and travel ten thousand miles.” I enjoy reading before sleep. Storybooks and science books are my favorites. They open my eyes to different worlds and ideas.
Last summer, I travelled to Beijing with my family. We visited the Great Wall. Climbing it was tiring but amazing. Seeing it in real life made the history I read in books come alive. It was an unforgettable experience.
