There comes a time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible to preserve everything from our past as we move towards the future. Finding and keeping the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge. Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959. A committee was established to limit damage to the Egyptian buildings and prevent the loss of cultural relics. The group asked for contributions from different departments and raised funds within the international community. Experts investigated the issue, conducted several tests, and then made a proposal for how the buildings could be saved. Finally, a document was signed, and the work began in 1960. The project brought together governments and environmentalists from around the world. Temples and other cultural sites were taken down piece by piece, and then moved and put back together again in a place where they were safe from the water. In 1961, German engineers moved the first temple. Over the next 20 years, thousands of engineers and workers rescued 22 temples and countless cultural relics. Fifty countries donated nearly $80 million to the project. When the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. Not only had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow. The spirit of the Aswan Dam project is still alive today. Perhaps the best example is shown by UNESCO, which runs a programme that prevents world cultural heritage sites around the world from disappearing. If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution. 24. Why is it difficult to keep the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites? A. The old must give way to the new because of economic development. B. The government damages the cultural sites on purpose. C. The government allows other countries to damage the cultural sites. D. The cultural sites may be damaged by natural disasters. 25. Which is NOT the reason why the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam in the 1950s? A. To benefit the area by controlling floods. B. To produce electricity. C. To supply water to more farmers in the area. D. To protect cultural relics. 26. What can be learned from the Aswan Dam project? A. UNESCO is an important organization in the world. B. The cooperation can solve difficult problems. C. The Egyptian government found a plan to build a better tomorrow. D. All the cultural relics were saved in the project. 27. Which word do you think can describe the project? A. Successful. B. Negative. C. Useless. D. Doubtful. A 25. D 26. B 27. 根据第一段中“There comes a time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible to preserve everything from our past as we move towards the future. (旧事物终将让位于新事物,在我们迈向未来的过程中,不可能保留过去的一切)”可知,在发展进步与文化遗产保护之间保持平衡很难,是因为经济发展要求旧事物让位于新事物。故选A项。 根据第二段中“In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. (20世纪50年代,埃及政府希望修建一座新的尼罗河大坝,以控制洪水、发电,并为该地区更多农民供水)”可知,埃及政府修建大坝的目的是控制洪水、发电和为农民供水,而“保护文化遗产”不是目的。故选D项。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中“Not only had the countries found a path to the future that did not run over the relics of the past, but they had also learnt that it was possible for countries to work together to build a better tomorrow. (这些国家不仅找到了一条不践踏过去遗迹的未来之路,而且他们也认识到各国携手合作、共创更美好明天是可能的)”以及第六段中“If a problem seems too difficult for a single nation, the global community can sometimes provide a solution. (如果一个难题对一个国家来说过于棘手,国际社会有时能提供解决方案)”可知,从阿斯旺大坝项目中可以了解到,合作可以解决难题。故选B项。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段中“When the project ended in 1980, it was considered a great success. (当该项目于1980年结束时,它被认为是一个巨大的成功)”可知,这个项目是“成功的”。故选A项。 C Scientists from the University of Otago’s Christchurch Medical School have discovered a direct connection between people’s vitamin C intake and their skin’s ability to produce collagen (胶原蛋白)and renew itself. The study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, clearly shows that skin health is influenced by vitamin C from daily food, not just by topical (外用的)creams applied to the skin surface. It also found that vitamin C levels in the skin are closely related to those in the blood. Therefore, eating more foods rich in vitamin C can effectively increase vitamin C levels in both the blood and the skin. The research included 24 healthy adults from New Zealand and Germany. Those eating two SunGold kiwifruits daily raised blood vitamin C levels and saw a clear increase in skin vitamin C. This made skin thicker — due to more collagen — and sped up outer skin renewal. Lead researcher Professor Margreet Vissers described the results as surprising and said the strong connection between skin thickness and vitamin C intake is fully believable. She noted the connection between blood and skin vitamin C is clearer than in other organs. “We were surprised by how closely blood vitamin C levels are connected to those in the skin,” she said. The research team also discovered that vitamin C in the blood can reach all layers of the skin and help the skin work better. Though vitamin C is often added to skincare products, it is not well taken in through the outer skin. However, skin cells can take in vitamin C from the blood very well. SunGold kiwifruits were chosen for the study because they always have a high vitamin C content. But the researchers believe other foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and berries, can bring similar benefits to the skin. It is important to keep steady vitamin C levels in the blood because the human body does not store vitamin C for a long time. Professor Vissers suggested that healthy people can reach the best blood vitamin C levels with about 250mg of vitamin C every day through their diet. 28. What affects skin health according to the study? A. Water taken in by the skin. B. Vitamin C from food intake. C. Collagen from skin products. D. Topical skincare creams alone. 29. 根据第一段中的“The study, published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, clearly shows that skin health is influenced by vitamin C from daily food, not just by topical (外用的)creams applied to the skin surface.(这项发表在《皮肤病学研究杂志》上的研究明确表明,皮肤健康受日常食物中维生素C的影响,而不仅仅是涂抹在皮肤表面的外用乳膏。)” 根据第二段中的“Lead researcher Professor Margreet Vissers described the results as surprising and said the strong connection between skin thickness and vitamin C intake is fully believable.(首席研究员Margreet Vissers教授称这些结果令人惊讶,并表示皮肤厚度与维生素C摄入之间的密切关联完全可信。)” 根据第三段中的“Though vitamin C is often added to skincare products, it is not well taken in through the outer skin.(尽管维生素C常被添加到护肤品中,但它很难通过皮肤外层被很好地吸收。)” 根据第一段中的“Scientists from the University of Otago’s Christchurch Medical School have discovered a direct connection between people’s vitamin C intake and their skin’s ability to produce collagen (胶原蛋白)and renew itself.(奥塔哥大学基督城医学院的科学家发现,人们摄入的维生素C与皮肤产生胶原蛋白和自我更新的能力之间存在直接联系。)” 故选A项。 D History, as it is studied today, begins with the earliest civilizations which left visual and literary evidence which historians can collect, analyse and interpret. Western historians begin with the Mesopotamians, the Ancient Egyptians, and especially the Ancient Greeks. These might be the first civilizations to produce complex texts, art and architecture to which we still have some access in the twenty-first century. Historians study the source evidence left by the people of these periods in order to understand who, how, why and what they were. We are then taught to form different interpretations by other historians within our own theories and research to create a balanced, informed and analytical article, book or documentary. The article must remain dispassionate and aim towards objectivity, removing any subjective prejudice (主观成见) which might emerge before and during research. However, it is too limited, and it can paint a false picture of the past to both professional and recreational readers by focusing too narrowly on certain events or individuals and completely ignoring other seemingly less important events or individuals through a lack of either evidence or interest. History as a series of events covers the lives of billions of people from every country for thousands of years. Each individual’s actions and everyday life, from their birth until their death, is history, and worthy of study in its own right. Furthermore, to be objective in an historical essay, one must be separated from one’s study, having no emotional reaction to the evidence and maintaining a tolerance and relativity to historical context, so that the evidence will not be destroyed by modern prejudice. However, absolute separation, whether through attempted objectivity or distance of time, is useless to historical study. Pure objectivity can never be realized as we are all highly subjective, emotional beings, and what we write will always reflect this: it is what makes us human, and humanity is what we study. 32. How did the earliest civilizations help historians? A. By recording analytical skills. B. By providing first-hand materials. C. By presenting high-quality works. D. By simplifying historical research. 33. What are historians expected to do in their writing? A. Express their private thoughts openly. B. Focus on recent events and modern times. C. Keep personal feelings out of their works. D. Copy others’ ideas into their own articles. 34. Why is pure objectivity criticized according to the text? A. It ignores events with no significance. B. It cuts the ties between certain events. C. It shows an unclear image of the past. D. It acts against human beings’ nature. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Subjectivity: A Threat to Old Civilizations B. Subjectivity: A Necessity for Historical Study C. History: The Story of Everyone and Everyday Life D. History: The Subject Affected by Social Environment 【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第一段“History, as it is studied today, begins with the earliest civilizations which left visual and literary evidence which historians can collect, analyse and interpret.(如今所研究的历史始于最早的文明时期,这些文明留下了可供历史学家收集、分析和解读的视觉和文字资料)”可知,最早的文明通过提供第一手资料帮助历史学家。 根据第二段“The article must remain dispassionate and aim towards objectivity, removing any subjective prejudice (主观成见) which might emerge before and during research.(这篇文章必须保持客观冷静,力求做到客观公正,要摒弃在研究之前及研究过程中可能出现的任何主观偏见)”可知,历史学家在写作时应该将个人情感排除在作品之外。 根据最后一段“Pure objectivity can never be realized as we are all highly subjective, emotional beings, and what we write will always reflect this: it is what makes us human, and humanity is what we study.(纯粹的客观性永远不可能实现,因为我们都是高度主观的、情绪化的生物,我们写的东西总是反映出这一点:它使我们成为人类,人性是我们研究的对象)”由此可见,人类的本质决定了历史研究不可能是纯粹客观的。 Academic success is very important. ____36____ To achieve your success, it’s important to develop some skills, which can guide your learning. I was looking through the attic (阁楼) for Grandma’ s old albums when my hand touched a dusty violin box hidden behind winter jackets. When I opened it, the violin brought back memories of nights when Dad used to play soft songs for me after work. Now, the violin’s strings hung loose, and its once-shiny wood looked old after years of being unused. Downstairs, Dad’s key turned in the lock right at 6:15 pm. His work boots left dirty marks on the doormat. I saw him rubbing (揉) his right hand — he’ d hurt it last winter when he was at work. He looked up at the attic stairs. “Did you find anything cool up there?” he asked, his rough fingers tapping out a tune (旋律) on the kitchen table. “Dad, it’s nothing important really, just some old stuff up there!” I said. Dad stopped going for his music scholarship when Mom got really sick. He went from playing in concerts to working in a factory. Every birthday, he’d say, “Maybe next year,” but then he’d quietly add, “after we pay the hospital bills.” It hit me that his dream wasn’t gone, but just silenced. My mind raced with a flood of thoughts. Here was this violin, once a symbol of Dad’s passion and talent, now gathering dust in the attic. And here was Dad, his own dream of music buried beneath the weight of family responsibilities, his hand still aching from the injury that had kept him away from his true passion. A wave of determination washed over me. I couldn’t change the past, but I could do something about the present. I could fix up this violin, not just as a physical restoration (修复), but as a symbol of hope and a bridge to reconnect Dad with his forgotten dreams. Paragraph 1: By summer, I decided to work as an apprentice (学徒) at Mr. Kowalski’s music store. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: On Dad’s 50th birthday, I handed him a large, shiny wooden box. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Paragraph 1: By summer, I decided to work as an apprentice (学徒) at Mr. Kowalski’s music store. It was not long before Mr. Kowalski learned about my real purpose. I explained that I was here to fix Dad’s old violin, a symbol of his abandoned music dream. Deeply moved, he patted my shoulder and said, “This is the most meaningful apprenticeship I’ve ever seen.” He then became my strict but patient teacher, patiently guiding me to select materials, use tools, and focus on details. After weeks of hard practice, I finally restored the violin to its former glory, ready to be given as a gift to Dad on his 50th birthday. Paragraph 2: On Dad’s 50th birthday, I handed him a large, shiny wooden box. He froze, staring at the familiar grain it was his old music case, the one he’d abandoned when Mom fell ill. Tears blurred his eyes as he whispered, “It’s... my violin. I thought it was gone forever.” His rough fingers gently following the violin’s shape. I held his rough hand and said softly, “Dad, your dream wasn’t forgotten. I just helped it find its way back.” With a shaking voice, he lifted the violin and played the gentle tune he’d played for me as a child. A. Successful. B. Negative. C. Useless. D. Doubtful. C Scientists from the University of Otago’s Christchurch Medical School have discovered a direct connection between people’s vitamin C intake and their skin’s ability to produce collagen (胶原蛋白)and renew itself. 29. What is Professor Vissers’ attitude towards the study results? A. Doubtful. B. Approving. C. Unconcerned. D. Objective. 30. Why are vitamin C-rich skincare products less effective? A. They lack enough collagen. B. They are not used in a proper way. C. They don’t suit all skin types. D. They are poorly taken in through skin. 31. What is the best title for the passage? A. Vitamin C Intake and Skin Health B. Blood Vitamin C and Skin Vitamin C C. Skincare Products and Vitamin C Intake D. Collagen Production and Skin Thickness D History, as it is studied today, begins with the earliest civilizations which left visual and literary evidence which historians can collect, analyse and interpret. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
