Task 8 Read and choose (Reading comprehension) (2×20 Total: 40)
A
Once upon a time, an artist painted a very beautiful picture. She hung it on the wall across from a mirror so she could see it in the mirror. This made the picture look lovelier. The animals in the woods heard about this from the artist’s cat. The cat was smart and polite, so the animals trusted him. They were excited and asked him questions. The bear asked what made the picture beautiful, and he said it was the way it looked. The cow asked what a mirror was, and he said, “It’s like a hole in the wall. When you look into it, you can see the picture and feel happy.”
The donkey didn’t believe it. He said nothing could be that beautiful, and if it took many words to describe, it might not be true. The animals seemed to believe the donkey, and the cat left angrily.
For a few days, they didn’t talk about it. But soon their interest returned. They started to hate the donkey because they thought the picture could have brought them joy, yet the donkey doubted it without any facts.

One day, I felt something heavy on my shoulders and noticed something moving on my arms. It was a snake! My body shook, and my heart beat so loudly it felt like it would jump out of my chest.
This made me remember a trip to the zoo as a kid. A zookeeper was holding a big snake for photos but suddenly dropped it on me. The snake felt cold yet like burning fire, and I was so afraid that every hair on my arm stood up.
People are often afraid of snakes, even though most eat mice, birds, or fish, and few hurt humans. Scientists think this feeling is something we’re born with. For me, it started years before the zoo trip. In India, I saw a big snake near our car. It looked at me, and I ran to my parents, crying. Even though I’d never seen a snake before, I knew it was dangerous.
In many cultures, snakes are seen as bad, like in the Bible or Hindu stories. But not all snakes are dangerous. Over time, we learn that some things we are afraid of aren’t as bad as they seem. After calming down, I let the snake stay on my arms and even smiled for a photo.
25. How did the writer feel when the zookeeper dropped the snake on him?
A. Afraid. B. Excited. C. Worried. D. Interested.
26. Where did the author first see a snake in India?

A. They are helpful animals. B. They are good pets.
C. They are bad animals. D. They are easy-to-train animals.

As China got ready for the traditional Chinese New Year, a Chinese AI app, DeepSeek, became famous around the world. It became the most popular free app on the Apple App Store, beating apps like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Llama 2.
In January 2025, DeepSeek showed its new open model, DeepSeek R1. This model made a big step forward. It used special learning ways to let the AI learn to think by itself. As a result, in work such as math and language reasoning, the model works as well as the top models from other countries like OpenAI, and in some parts, it even outperforms the world’s best.
What surprises the world most is that the developers used fewer things than those used by others. What’s more, both the number of things and the number of developers on the team are lower than others’. This means that the cost for users will be lower as well.
The app quickly got noticed all over the world. People in Silicon Valley started wondering how its developers almost caught up with Americans. Marc Andreessen, a famous expert, said, “DeepSeek R1 is one of the most wonderful apps I’ve ever seen.” DeepSeek means a lot to China and its AI apps. It marks the rise of Chinese large models in the world. ▲ Other countries are speaking ill of it. The company also faced unfriendly actions.
29. What is special about DeepSeek R1’s learning?

31. Which sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A. So, everyone in the world loved using the app.
B. Because of this, DeepSeek became the best app.
C. However, with this success comes new problems.
D. At the same time, the team decided to save money.
32. In which part of a newspaper can you probably read this passage?
A. Science. B. Sports. C. Business. D. Education.
【答案】29. D 30. B 31. C 32. A

①Teenagers often find pimples (青春痘) pop up on their faces. These unwelcome trouble-makers seem to appear out of nowhere, especially before important events, like taking class photos or speaking on stage. Why are teenagers likely to have pimples?
②One of the main reasons is the big change in their hormone levels (荷尔蒙水平). A study in 2024 by Professor Yao Xu’s team in “Cell Host & Microbe” showed that the change in hormone levels makes sebaceous glands produce too much oil. Some bacteria (细菌) use the extra oil to multiply, causing skin problems. And then pimples appear.
③Bad habits are also a cause of pimples. One of these habits is staying up late, which will hurt skin metabolism (新陈代谢). An experiment (实验) found teens who go to bed late for a week had more oil and 30% more pimples.
④What’s more, eating too much high-sugar and high-fat food is another bad habit. For example, a boy eating fried chicken over five times a week has a 40% higher risk (风险) of pimples than those who eat healthily.
⑤Pimples bring a lot of problems to teens’ minds and social life. They may feel less confident as they care about their looks. In class, some of them can’t listen to the teachers carefully. These teenagers might be shy and afraid to talk in public.
⑥Here is some advice for students with pimple problems.
⑦First, take care of your skin. Use gentle cleaners in the morning and at night.
⑧Next, sleep 7 to 8 hours every night. Eat more fruit, vegetables and grains. Eat less junk food to control oil.
⑨Finally, don’t worry too much. Pimples are normal for teens. Be happy and do some sports like running, rope skipping and so on. You can surely “live in peace” with pimples.
37. How does the writer support (支持) the idea that bad habits cause (导致) pimples?
A. By showing a study in 2024. B. By giving advice to the teenagers.
C. By using examples and experiment results. D. By explaining why they worry the teenagers.
38. Which of the following is NOT good for a teenager to reduce (减少) pimple risk?
A. Playing basketball twice a week. B. Sleeping for 7 to 8 hours a night.
C. Eating more apples and carrots. D. Eating fried chicken every day.
39. What’s the writing purpose (目的) of this passage?
A. To introduce some important studies on pimples.
B. To introduce some skin cleaners.

At just 14 years old, Ryan Hickman from San Juan Hills High School, US, attracts a lot of eyes with a beach clean-up activity. On April 20th, 2024, he and many volunteers started a five-week activity to pick up trash from five beaches along the Southern California coast and even some beaches in Mexico.
“The trash ends up in the ocean, and animals are eating it,” Ryan told The Orange County Register. “Picking up a piece of trash may save a turtle’s life.” He has collected about 2 million bottles from beaches, lakes and rivers since 2012.
Ryan first learned about the influence of pollution at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC,太平洋海洋哺乳动物中心) in Laguna Beach, which has been saving and protecting sea animals for more than 40 years. Watching sea animals improve inspired him to think about what he could do to help to save them.
From a young age, he has developed a love for recycling. He kept collecting trash and bottles for a long time. One day, Ryan knew from the workers in PMMC that saving sea animals needed money. “Why not sell them?” he thought. In 2017, Ryan handed a $10,000 check (支票) to the PMMC after picking up 50,000 pounds of trash and more than 200,000 recyclable bottles.
Ryan has also traveled worldwide, speaking to kids about caring for our planet and oceans. He hopes every kid can do something.
He said, “It’s meaningful. __________________________________________________________________.”

What is the happiest race in the world? Some might say it is The Color Run. This is a 5-km run where everyone throws colored dust (粉末) at each other. The race is very popular in the US and it’s getting more popular in China.
The run is similar to an Indian holiday called Holi. The holiday comes from stories about the triumph (伟大胜利) of good over evil (邪恶), but today it’s about having fun. Everyone throws colored dust at each other and shouts “Happy Holi”.
Runners in The Color Run are not timed, and there are no winners or prizes. The only rule is that runners have to start the race wearing all white. Every runner is expected to forget about competition and just enjoy the experience.
During the race, after every kilometer, there are people holding colored dust who will splash (泼) you with it. By the end of the race, the runners will be covered with different colors including yellow, green, red, blue, purple, etc. There’s even a party at the end!
You might think the dust could be dangerous for people. Well, it is actually made of the same cornstarch (玉米淀粉) as is in your food, so it is safe and easy to clean off. But it is best to wear a pair of goggles (护目镜) to keep it out of your eyes.

A. They are helpful animals. B. They are good pets.
C. They are bad animals. D. They are easy-to-train animals.
28. What is the best title for the passage?
A. My Unforgettable Trip to the Zoo B. Snakes: From Scary to Friendly
C. The Dangerous Snakes in My Life D. Snakes: Helpful or Dangerous?
