Normally, when the bean is gathered in, the rest of the fruit is thrown away. But researchers in switzerland have developed a coco fruit that won't be wasted. Dear teacher, Could you please say more about the meaning of "appeal?" Thank you. Let's look at the many ways we can use the word "appeal". As a verb, "appeal" means making a request, often in official situations. Generally, we do not use "appeal" for everyday requests. For example, we would not say: I appeal to you to get some milk at the store. Appealing We can change the meaning of "appeal" by making it an adjective. One way to do this is to use the -ing ending. Consider the following examples:Her dress looks really appealing. That argument is appealing to many voters. Used as a noun "appeal" describes a formal or urgent request, for example:The employees made an appeal to reduce the number of hours of work. As a noun, "appeal" also describes a quality that creates interest, sympathy, or attraction. Here are some examples:The museum's design has a lot of appeal. The appeal of that music is its simplicity. Using "appeal" in the law "Appeal" is also often used in legal matters — both as a noun or a verb. As a noun, it means a formal request to a court to review a decision by another court. If one court accepts the other's request, we can say the court "granted" the appeal. If the court rejects, we can say the court "denied" it. The following example shows "appeal" being used as a verb in legal English: The defense team will likely appeal the decision. An adjective form of "appeal" is also used in the legal system. The adjective "appellate" describes a kind of court that deals with cases that have been appealed. 21. Which content is NOT mentioned about "appeal"? A. Its initial source and history. B. Its different parts of speech. C. Its extensions and special uses. D. Its meanings and specific contexts. 22. How does the author develop the text? A. By making contrast. B. By giving examples. C. By citing references. D. By providing a definition. 23. Where is the text probably taken from? A. An English-English dictionary. B. A guidebook on English grammar. C. An English textbook on writing. D. A draft of an English lecture broadcast. B In my old life, I wasn't a "morning person". Then I had children, whose needs demanded an early start. Now they're older, but I can't shake the early-rising routine. They're the only part of the day reserved for just my own needs. I get genuine satisfaction from my early productivity. I've written more, exercised more consistently, and approached challenges clearly. But every transformation comes with a price. And mine has been paid in evening hours — those crucial moments when families reconnect, when teenagers may open up, and when marriages deepen. I have become a person who gives the best of herself to the morning and offers only the worst to the night. My husband prefers to stay up late, so he handles the evening tasks. It's an efficient arrangement, but it has created an unintended difference: I get our daughters' sleepy mornings and he gets their sharing nighttime moments. The cost feels particularly high as my girls, now 12 and 16, have moved toward a later bedtime. Teenagers are active at night by biological design. My fading evening energy has influenced all my relationships. I wonder if this is simply aging. But I suspect that in making the most of the early hours, I have changed not just my sleep schedule but my time with family. The energy I pour into morning workouts and emails has to come from somewhere. That somewhere is everywhere else. I know I'll never come alive at midnight, but I am learning to stretch the boundaries of my days. The balance isn't about becoming less of a morning person, but about leaving space for connection even when it doesn't match my body's clock. 24. Why does the author keep rising early? A. To do morning chores. B. To satisfy personal needs. C. To transform a bad habit. D. To match her husband's schedule. 25. What influence does the family arrangement have? A. The father is worn out at night. B. The children are willing to share. C. The family members grow closer. D. The author fails to bond with her kids. 26. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The author's reflection on the routine. B. The author's complaint about aging. C. The author's concern about the marriage. D. The author's praise for morning workouts. 27. What message does the text convey? A. Sticking to personal routine brings joy. B. Rising early promises a productive life. C. Adjusting for family is deep wisdom. D. Refusing to change causes lifelong regret. C The bald eagle is a symbol of the US. An image of the bird is on the flag and seal (印章) of the US president, the seal of the US Supreme Court, military insignia, as well as the dollar bill. Even so, the bird has had its ups and downs. At one time, it was at risk of permanent (永久的) extinction. Later, however, its numbers recovered. In the early 2000s, the bird was removed from its endangered species list. Culturally, too, the birds are doing well again. In December 2024 before leaving office, Joe Biden signed legislation (法规) officially making it the national bird. An insect-killing chemical called DDT played a major part in the long complex story of species weakness and recovery. Used to kill insects, DDT also proved harmful to eagle eggs. American officials banned DDT in 1972. But the use of the chemical had already caused severe damage to eagle populations. For example, in the 1980s there was only one nesting pair of eagles in New Jersey. Now, there are about 300 pairs. To rebuild the number of eagles across the US, researchers wanting to save them imported the birds from places where their population numbers were secure, including Canada. Early on, they also removed eggs from their nests so they could safely hatch (孵化) with scientists before being returned to their parents to raise. A lack of eagle habitat and prey (猎物) also threatens the species. Bald eagles feed heavily on fish, so they require clean, open water in which to hunt. Disease outbreaks are another serious threat to the birds. The birds are highly respected by several Native American cultures as symbols of strength, especially in the Pacific Northwest. The position of eagles as symbols of the US adds to their protection. Dan Day is a birder. He has seen bald eagles about 50 times in recent years both on nature walks and while driving around. He said, "It really elevates (提升) your day to see a bald eagle." 28. What is Paragraph 3 mainly focused on? A. Specific measures to protect bald eagles. B. Hatching techniques of bald eagles. C. Protecting bald eagles through cooperation. D. Early protection and growth of bald eagles. 29. Which is the threat bald eagles are currently facing in the US? A. The widespread use of DDT. B. Illegal hunting by Native American. C. Lack of prey and outbreak of diseases. D. Severe environmental pollution in habitats. 30. What does the author convey in the last paragraph? A. Observing bald eagles is stressful. B. Encountering a bald eagle is unexpected. C. More people are paying attention to bald eagles. D. The protection of bald eagles has shown results. 31. What is the best title for the text? A. The Bald Eagle Is a Much More Respectable Bird B. The Past and Future of Bald Eagles in America C. The Complex Process of Successfully Rescuing Eagles D. Bald Eagles: Recovered, Officially US National Bird D Artificial intelligence (AI) tools that permit people to produce online reviews have put sellers, service providers and buyers in unfamiliar territory, public protection groups and researchers say. False reviews have long appeared on many popular websites. The reviews are often traded on private social media groups between fake (假的) review dealers and businesses willing to pay. Sometimes, businesses get good reviews in exchange for offering rewards such as gift cards. The Transparency Company is a technology company and public protection group that uses software to detect fake reviews. The company said it started to see AI-generated reviews appear in large numbers in mid-2023. The reviews have increased quickly ever since. Major companies are developing policies for how AI-generated content fits into their systems for removing fake reviews. Some companies already employ special programmes and investigative teams to find and remove fake reviews. Still, the companies are giving users some ability to use AI. The Coalition for Trusted Reviews, which Amazon, Trustpilot, Glassdoor, Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com launched last year, said that even though people may put AI to illegal use, the technology also presents "an opportunity to push back against those who seek to use reviews to mislead others". Tech companies, including Amazon, Yelp and Google, say their technology has blocked or removed a large number of suspect reviews and suspicious accounts. However, some experts say they could be doing more. Consumers can try to find fake reviews by watching out for a few possible warning signs, researchers say. Overly good or bad reviews are suspect. Highly specialized terms that repeat a product's full name or model number are another possible clue. When it comes to AI, research done by Balázs Kovács, a Yale professor, has shown that people cannot tell the difference between AI-created and human-written reviews. Some AI detectors may also be fooled by shorter texts, which are common in online reviews, the study said. However, there are some AI clues that online shoppers and service seekers should keep in mind. Reviews written with AI are often longer, highly structured and include "empty descriptors". Empty descriptors include general phrases and characteristics. The writing also includes overused phrases or opinions like "the first thing that struck me" and "game-changer". 32. How does The Transparency Company find fake reviews? A. By appointing experts to the job. B. By calling on volunteers to check them. C. By offering users rewards. D. By making the use of software. 33. What can be learned about major companies? A. People will not see fake reviews in their websites. B. They think AI is useless to seek suspicious accounts. C. Experts are satisfied with their reaction to suspect reviews. D. They allowed users to take advantage of AI to some extent. 34. Which review could possibly be written using AI? A. Got it today, works fine for my needs. B. Not bad, but the price is a bit high. C. It's an excellent product with great quality. D. Stopped working after 3 days, don't buy. 35. What is the main idea of the text? A. There is growing concern about false reviews. B. AI tools are often used for faking product reviews. C. We are living in a world that depends more on AI. D. AI's recent developments have got a lot of social attention. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In the age of constant digital exposure, there is a widespread problem — sleep could be challenging to get. 36 They are struggling with nonstop information, unfinished text message exchanges, strong desires to check social media, work worries, and self-reflections. To prevent overthinking stealing your sleep, here are three easy-to-apply ways. Give your thoughts a place to land When your mind believes it must hold on to every thought, these thoughts can feel like planes circling to touch down. 37 A good old-fashioned paper and pen next to your bed is far better than picking up your phone to write on your notes app. Phone in hand, you will likely start checking social media or news. Writing down your thoughts on paper tells your brain they are not ignored but safely stored, relaxing your mind. 38 Any gathering of mindfulness experts would provide enough evidence of how overthinking lives in imagined futures and in replayed (often mistakenly) pasts. Healthy sleep lives only in the here and now. So, feel the warmth of your blanket, the comfort of your body on your bed, and that super pleasant feeling of letting yourself go before falling asleep. 39 Realize sleep isn't from removing all thoughts Your goal for a good night's sleep is not to push all your thoughts away. 40 Gently reminding yourself how far you have come in life will help you stop worrying about what you have to do. Sleep is not about clearing your thoughts, but instead about how you hold on to them when you pull the blanket over you at night. A. So, land them on a paper runway. B. Clarify your thoughts to the fullest C. Secure your thoughts to the present D. This helps win your sleep back instantly. E. Overthinking in bed is difficult to address. F. Rather, the best way is to respond to them properly. G. Ed Coleman, a truck driver from Sapp Brothers Petroleum, was driving along his usual route in Papillion, Nebraska. He planned to finish his delivery tasks as usual, never thinking he would become a hero that day. Suddenly, something unusual caught his eye on the road. Even though the rain blurred (使变模糊) his vision, he seemed to see a small figure standing on the median (隔离带). As a father of his own children, Ed felt a strong urge to check it out. He made a quick U-turn and drove back, only to find a 3-year-old boy standing there alone, looking scared and helpless. It turned out that earlier, the boy's grandfather had a sudden illness. The couple rushed him to the hospital in a hurry and accidentally forgot to lock the door properly. The little boy had woken up in the early morning and couldn't find his parents. He quietly walked out of the house, hoping to look for them. Unfamiliar with the neighbourhood, he wandered along the road and accidentally walked onto the median. He was too frightened to move, so he just stood there in the cold rain. Ed got out of his truck at once. At the same time, another witness who passed by also stopped to help. They called 911 immediately. To keep the boy warm, Ed carried him into his truck and wrapped him in a blanket given by the other witness. While waiting for the police, Ed played cartoon videos on his phone to calm the little boy down. Ed said he had slightly diverted (改道) from his usual path that day.
